It was Shanan's eighteenth birthday and Kakashi had big plans to take her out.
She had had a lot of nice things to wear for awhile. But Kakashi was finally buying something "date worthy". And he literally never went out in public without his mask, but today he planned to go completely without just to surprise her.
First they would eat. Then they would go home. Then they would go into the backyard where Kushina had set up lights and music and several very specific drawings that Kakashi had given her to put out.
Kakashi had gone through his entire collection and picked out some of his work to display for the occasion. Most were just drawings of Shanan throughout the years when Kakashi had thought her particularly beautiful. All starting from when they were about five and a half.
And the songs he had picked, he knew were all of her favorites.
Hopefully he wouldn't chicken out on asking her to dance with him.
When they were getting ready, Shanan got ready in her old room, since that's where she still kept most of her clothes, and Kakashi got ready in their room.
Kakashi wore black slacks, a white button up shirt, a black vest and a black bow tie.
Shanan wore a strappy, mid-length, light blue dress with white flowers on it.
Kakashi had finished getting ready before Shanan, even with having to tie his bowtie, and leaned against the doorway to wait for her.
Once she opened her door she immediately covered her face and teared up as he usually dressed casual for their dates, which she didn't mind at all as he was always handsome, but he just looked so put together. And no mask! He always wore his mask out and just pulled it down to eat, drink or kiss. Shanan couldn't take it.
"You dressed up?" she asked as she walked up to him and put her arms around his neck. "For me?"
Kakashi smiled shyly and put his hands on her waist.
"You look beautiful," he whispered as he leaned down to kiss her quickly. "You ready?" he asked as he held his arm out.
Shanan beamed as she took his arm and he led the way.
As they were walking they saw Kushina and Guy walking with a bundle of things, which made Kakashi sweat a little.
"What are those two even doing?" Shanan wondered out loud as she watched them avoid her.
"Probably helping Guy with something silly," Kakashi said casually.
Shanan laughed as he was probably right. Kushina Sensei was always helpful no matter what.
Shanan also noticed that they had walked right past the restaurant. But she didn't say anything because she decided he must've had something else planned and was delighted when she was right.
Kakashi stopped in front of the library and turned to look at Shanan.
"Well, we're here."
"At the library?" she asked curiously.
Kakashi smiled as he put an arm around her waist.
"Put your arms around my neck and hold on," he told her.
She wrapped her arms tightly around him as he picked her up and jumped their way up to the roof of the library.
There was a really pretty cherry blossom tree that Shanan adored and had labeled her favorite tree in the village since she was a kid. It was right against the library so she never could sit underneath it, but Kakashi had a table set up on the roof of the building, so they were practically in the branches.
"Aww..." she said as soon as she saw it. "We are here. At my tree..." she couldn't stop smiling. "Are we allowed to be up here?"
"I got permission," he said as he grabbed her hand and led her to the table with a basket on top of it.
"When did you do this?" she asked him.
"I had help," he admitted.
They unloaded the basket and set the table together and Shanan requested that they sit next to one another to face the tree while they ate and then for whatever reason, could barely eat, even though everything was perfect. She just had too many butterflies.
"Shall we move on to our next destination?" he asked her as he stood up.
"Yeah. I'm nervous. But yeah," she told him as she laughed a little.
"Nervous?" he asked incredulously.
"Yes! You look so cute and you're being so sweet."
"Yeah, but I'm always sweet to you," he said with a smirk. Even though it was actually very true.
"Should I bother asking where we're going?"
"You can... we're just going home now," he said as he picked her up again so that they could jump down.
Shanan laughed, but as they got closer to their house she kept looking up at Kakashi to see if he'd give anything away. But he didn't.
"We're home!" she said with a hint of surprise.
"I told you," he said as he opened the door.
As soon as she went in she could see the light from the backyard and looked at Kakashi excitedly.
Kakashi closed the door and walked past her and held his hand back for her to grab ahold of and led her into the backyard.
She walked out and looked around and there were twinkling lights hanging through the branches and some torches sticking out of the ground that had recently been lit. There was also music playing.
There were also several stands with Kakashi's drawings on display.
Shanan looked at Kakashi and teared up. "These are just pictures of me?"
Kakashi walked up to her and stood in front of her. "Only my favorite ones over the years," he said softly.
Shanan grabbed his hand as a couple of tears fell. One picture caught her eye and she walked up to it pulling him with her. "This is just me reading?"
"You kept laughing, and I thought it was cute and didn't wanna forget it," he said as his cheeks turned red.
"And this one is before mom and dad died... I'm just sleeping with my bear."
"Actually, you'd dropped it in the middle of the night, so I got up and gave it back to you and you smiled in your sleep when you hugged him. I kneeled on the floor in front of you and whispered to you that I thought you were pretty and you smiled again."
"You did that for me?" she asked as more tears fell.
Kakashi smiled. "Like I said, I'm always sweet to you," he told her as she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him deeply. He pulled her in close and caressed her cheek as he whispered. "You're gonna think I'm crazy... but do you wanna dance with me?"
Shanan beamed up at him and nodded gently.
He held her close as they danced and kissed and smiled at each other.
After a few songs Kakashi stopped and leaned his forehead on Shanan's as he looked into her eyes. "Hey..." he said as he started to tear up ever so slightly. He didn't say anything for a minute as he stared at her.
Shanan still couldn't even get over how handsome he looked. If his goal tonight was to somehow make her fall even more in love with him, then he was doing an amazing job.
Kakashi brushed her hair off of her forehead and looked down and smiled as he whispered. "Just marry me, ok?"
Shanan smiled and laughed a little as she raised her eyebrow. "Oh, that's how you ask me?" she teased.
He leaned in and kissed her quickly and then leaned back and held his finger up for her to wait a second as he reached into his pockets. But whatever he was looking for wasn't there.
"Hey, idiot, you forgot this," Guy whispered loudly to Kakashi as he tried to look inconspicuous on the roof and threw a small black box to Kakashi.
Kakashi caught it and gave him a thumbs up before looking back at Shanan who was clearly entertained.
He stood a few feet away from her and knelt down as he opened the box.
As soon as he started to kneel, Shanan knelt with him with tears pouring down her face.
Kakashi chuckled at her with tears in his eyes. "You're not supposed to do it too," he whispered softly.
Shanan nodded in disagreement. She very much thought it was the exact right thing to do.
"Shanan..." he smirked at her and laughed again as tears streamed down his face, "will you marry me?"
She smiled and nodded as she stared at him. "Yes!" she said as she threw her arms around him once again and kissed him.
He squeezed her tight as he kissed her, making sure not to drop the ring before leaning back.
"You know, you didn't even look at this," he pointed out.
"Oh yeah!" she said as she took the box. "Wait…" fresh tears filled her eyes. "You got me one with a pearl too?" she asked as she covered her mouth, still staring at it.
Kakashi smiled and took the ring from the box and grabbed her hand. "I know how much you love them." He slid the ring on and then kissed her hand.
Shanan admired her hand with her new ring.
"Even though you could've given me a pebble and I still would've said yes," she said as she kissed him again.
"Do I still have to be here?" Guy yelled from the roof as Kakashi waved him away. "Ok, congratulations!"
They both gave him a thumbs up as they continued to embrace and kiss.
"I love you so much, Kakashi. Thank you for today," she whispered.
"I love you, thank you for every day," he whispered back.
