Every member of the Anbu were sent to clean up after a massacre in the Uchiha quarters on the outskirts of the village.

The Hatakes, specifically, were given the task to track down the lone survivor who had run off scared from his older brother who had killed his entire clan.

Sasuke Uchiha.

Son of Fugaku and Mikoto Uchiha. And brother of Itachi Uchiha, a gifted shinobi and member of the Anbu. Shanan and Kakashi had worked with him when he was still training. And they knew Sasuke well since Mikoto and Kushina were great friends, so Sasuke spent a lot of time at Kushina's.

Of course, neither of them could go without thinking of Obito. This was his clan and Kakashi had been gifted their most distinctive feature.

Last night after the massacre, Sasuke had been seen running through the street crying and completely terrified. And when someone went to go and check on things, they saw several bodies lying around.

So they had been tasked to find the boy while the rest of the Anbu cleared out the area.

Shanan and Kakashi didn't have to look too far. They knew he'd eventually end up near his house again, so they waited in the woods nearby where they had found some scorch marks on the trees. It looked just like their own backyard when they were younger.

He was hiding in a cluster of green overgrowth that had grown between several large trees. Shanan was the first to approach him as she and Kakashi removed their masks.

Shanan kneeled in front of him. "Hi Sasuke, it's just me and Kakashi..." she said as she smiled softly at him.

Sasuke looked at her and teared up as he fell into her arms.

"We're here to help," Kakashi told him gently as he kneeled next to Shanan. "We have a bag packed for you. You'll be safe."

Sasuke continued to sob as Shanan hugged him tight. He was seven years old, which was how old she and Kakashi had been when her parents were killed and she'd lost her home.

They still had each other, though. And hopefully Sasuke would find comfort in going somewhere familiar to him as Kushina had told them to bring him straight there when they found him.

"We're gonna take you to stay with Kushina and Naruto, ok? They already have some space for you. You don't have to be scared or alone," Shanan assured him.

Sasuke pulled away and wiped his face off as he nodded.

Most of the time when a child was orphaned without family, they were left alone to fend for themselves and given money each month to get what they needed. But Sasuke wouldn't have to go through any of that.

As soon as they arrived at Kushina's she pulled Sasuke in for the longest hug. Mikoto had been her very best friend since they were children and she had thought of Sasuke as family since he was born, just a few months before Naruto.

Sasuke already seemed a little less scared than he had been as Naruto took him to show him his side of the room that they'd be sharing from now on.

"Where was he?" Kushina asked quietly.

"In the woods behind his house. He was pretty shaken up," Kakashi answered.

"I just can't believe Itachi would do such a thing," she said as she sat down. "He loved his family."

Shanan sat next to her and put her arm around her as she started crying.

"I'm so sorry, Sensei," she said.

Kushina calmed down pretty quickly though.

"At least he spared Sasuke. He's such a sweet kid and Naruto wouldn't have understood if he had lost his friend. I'm happy to take him in as my own now," she said optimistically.

"He's lucky to have you," Kakashi told her. "And Naruto. Trust me. I'm sure I'd be a lot different had I been alone through all of my losses," he said as he looked at Shanan.

"I agree. He'll be happy here," Shanan said as she smiled.

"Thank you guys. You're always so helpful and I'm so proud of you." She looked at Kakashi. "Minato would be proud of you, too!" she said as she teared up again. "Come back later for dinner. I'm sure you guys have to at least report to Lord Third."

"No. We're going to help with clean up now," Kakashi told her. "But we will be back for dinner."

They both walked in silence as they made their way back to the Uchiha quarters. Konoha had never suffered such a tragedy. So many lost lives in one clan and by one of their own.

Hopefully Sasuke would find happiness and light with Kushina and Naruto. Hopefully he could live a normal life despite his losses.
