Chapter 9: Thing about Bodal

We find ourselves in Maxxor's castle in Kiru City late at night.
There, Catra and Aivenna were giving their report to him and Intress with Tangath Toborn leaning against the window.
"We had managed to locate the battlegear but it appears to have found a new wielder." Aivenna said.
"What happened to the one the Chaotic player had?" Maxxor asks.
"This one was different. With it, a mysterious creature in a black coat was able to take on myself, Catra and the Underworlder Nievanna." Aivenna explains.
"What tribe did this creature hail from?" Intress asks.
"We don't know, I couldn't get a good look at his face." Catra said.
"When this battlegear was in the hands of a human it was much easier. But now there's a mysterious creature wandering through Perim with a weapon that gave him the strength to battle 3 creatures at once." Aivenna said.
"Incredible, imagine if you could get your hands on that battlegear." Intress said looking at Maxxor.
"Agreed, but we need to be smart about this. Send word to all Overworlders. Be on the lookout for a creature in a black coat." Maxxor orders.
As Tangath looked out the window he sees Roxas sneaking around with Tom, Kaz, and Erika making his eyes widen.
Down below, the 5 humans arrived under a window.
"Alright Erika are you sure this is it?" Tom asks.
"Yep, the Overworld Arsenal is right in there." Erika points.
"Let's just hurry up and get out of here." Kaz said nervously.
"You spend half your time in the Underworld and this place makes you nervous?" Roxas asks.
Shrugging Kaz just nods his head.
"Roxas give me a boost." Erika said.
"Uh okay." Roxas cups his hands together and lifts her up to the window to see all the battlegear.
"Jackpot." Erika grins.
"I feel like something's not right." Kaz said.
"You're overthinking it. Come on I'll boost you up." Tom said.
Little did they know on the roof of the arsenal something was making its escape.
"We'll never get in this way. Why don't we just scan through the windows?" Kaz suggests.
"No way, I want to see the selection." Tom said.
"Come on Kaz, man up." Erika said as Roxas helps her down.
"If only we had a key to this place." Tom said getting Roxas' attention.
"Well what do you say we—" Before Roxas could finish they heard a noise.
Looking up the 4 humans gasp in horror as a large orange spider-like creature was scaling the armory coming down towards them.
"It's Spyder!" Kaz gasps as they jumped out of the way.
"So, you've been following me." Spyder assumes.
"N-No, we just came to do a little window shopping." Kaz gulps in fear.
"We didn't even know you were here." Erika said nervously when Tom noticed a piece of battlegear in one of his many arms.
"Don't play innocent with me! I know you Chaotic players are only trying to—" Using this opening Tom ran out and stole the battlegear from him.
"Helping yourself to some Overworld Battlegear, huh? Well if you want to take it back to your bosses you'll have to take it from me." Tom declares.
"Tom no!" Roxas gasps.
Hissing Spyder fires a web at him, but Tom dodges and makes a run for it.
Refusing to lose his Battlegear, Spyder chases after him.
"Oh no, Tom." Kaz panics as Roxas tried running after.
In a small office, a little green creature was jotting down notes. This was Bodal.
"Hmm let's see, that's 323 Liquilizers minus the 7 that Maxxor had me send to the—" Before he could finish the little green creature could hear Kaz and Erika yelling.
"Roxas no come back!" Erika yells.
Curious the little creature made his way into the armory to see webs inside.
"Oh my, guards? Guards?" He calls out only to hear muffled screams.
Looking up he saw two figures tied up in webs.
Seeing it was only him, the creature grabbed a Cyclance and headed out to help.
In the market, Tom hides the battlegear in a booth before turning right at a fork in the road.
"Tom! Tom!" Roxas calls out before turning left. 'Something tells me I better change.'
As Roxas turns a corner, he was about to reach into his bag and pull out his coat when a pair of hands grab him and yanks him into a building.
"Don't even think about it." Tangath Toborn whispers yanking him into an empty room.
"Tangath Toborn?" Roxas said surprised to see him again. "What are you doing?"
"I should be asking you that. I heard about your little fight. You're lucky no one saw your face under that coat." Tangath warns.
"How much do you know?" Roxas asks.
"Maxxor is putting out a warning for all creatures to bring you in should they find the creature in the black coat." Tangath Toborn warns.
"Wait what?" Roxas said not liking this.
"The only reason I'm not turning you in is because you saved Aivenna and Catra from being buried alive. Even though they attacked you first you saved them and I thank you for that." Tangath said.
"Well thanks I guess." Roxas said.
"Let this be a warning. Be careful when you don the coat Roxas. Things will get very difficult if aren't careful." Tangath warns before leaving.
"Difficult?" Roxas paused not liking the sound of that.
However, his train of thought was interrupted by the sound of screams.
"Tom." Roxas gasps remembering his friend was being chased by an Underworlder.
"Give back my Aerodrome." Spyder orders tying Tom up in a web.
"I don't have it anymore." Tom said.
"Then take me to it. Or I'll make you suffer." Spyder threatens.
"Excuse me." Turning around they saw the little green creature struggle to lift his Cyclance.
"So we meet again. I'll see to you after I deal with this snoop." Spyder said.
From around the corner, Roxas ran out and found them.
"Tom!" Roxas calls out startling the little creature making him press the trigger.
From the Cyclance a lightning attack shot out and ricocheted off multiple objects landing right near Spyder's feet startling the Underworlder and making him flee.
"Oh man that was close." Tom said as Roxas ran over.
"Tom are you okay?" Roxas asks.
"Yeah." Tom nods when the green creature walks over.
"Who are you?" He asks.
"Oh uh I'm Tom and this is my friend Roxas." Tom said.
"I don't suppose you can help me get him out of this web?" Roxas asks.
"You know I don't think we got your name." Tom realized.
"I am Bodal." He declares. "You haven't heard of me?"
"Nu uh." Tom shook his head.
"Sorry but no." Roxas said.
"Hmph." Reaching into his pocket Bodal pulls out a small laser cutter and cuts Tom free. "I happen to be a very important but extremely underappreciated servant of the Overworld Leader Maxxor. I bet you know him."
"Yeah I do." Tom grins getting up.
"Well thanks for saving my friend." Roxas said.
"I owe ya one." Tom said.
"Yes, you do Tom. And I happen to know how you can pay me back." Bodal realized.
"Uh how?" Tom asks.
Around the corner, Erika and Kaz sneak over and find them talking to Bodal.
"I want you to scan me Tom and put me on your next Chaotic Battle Team." Bodal declares.
"Wow seriously? You'll actually let him scan you?" Roxas asks.
"By all means scan me to uh Roxas was it?" Bodal asks.
"Hey free scan." Tom smiles making Kaz and Erika gasp.
Taking out their scanners both players scanned Bodal only for them to be yanked back.
"Uh excuse us please." Kaz said yanking them around the corner.
"Hey what's the big idea?" Tom asks.
"What are you both doing? That's Bodal. The Babbling Black Hole of Boring." Kaz said.
"Come on Kaz he's not that bad. He saved me. It's the least I can do." Tom said.
"He even let us scan him." Roxas said.
"Uh did you see his stats?" Erika points.
Looking at his scanner, Roxas and Tom cringe.
"Well uh, he's got pretty high wisdom." Roxas said.
"He's not exactly a powerhouse." Tom said.
"He's barely an outhouse. Tom you can't use Bodal in a battle." Kaz said.
"Is there a problem?" Bodal asks appearing next to them.
Startled they jumped backwards.
"Uh yes—I mean no. Well uh you see something is up with my scanner and I couldn't scan you. So I'll catch you next time. Gotta go bye!" Tom said as the 4 humans made a break for it.
Bodal however did not look amused.
Back in the market, Tom was at the booth he put the Aerodrone at.
"At least we can scan that battlegear Spyder wanted. If I can find where I stashed it." Tomo said rummaging around.
"Looking for this?" Turning around Bodal was behind them again but this time he was holding the battlegear.
'How did he do that?' Roxas thought.
Opening the battlegear flying drone flew at them forcing them to dodge and duck to avoid being hit by it.
"It's called an Aerodrone. A very devastating piece of battlegear." Bodal walks over and puts it back in. "Unfortunately I removed the activator from the firing mechanism. I'd be happy to reinstall it so you can scan a working version but first Tom must put my scan on his next Chaotic Battle Team which we previously agreed to."
Pausing the 4 humans realized that was their only option.
"Okay fine but how do you keep sneaking up on us?" Tom asks.
"I know my way around, you'll see." Bodal smirks.
Meanwhile in the Underworld, Nivenna was kneeling in front of Chaor and Takinom.
"My lord. I have news on the mysterious battlegear." Nivenna declares.
"Speak." Takinom orders.
"The weapon has found a new host. A mysterious creature shrouded in a black coat is the wielder." She declares.
"A black coat? Which tribe did this creature hail from?" Chaor asks.
"I do not know Chaor, but what I do know is before I engaged this creature it had previously attacked Ulmar at his lab. Near the passage, I had managed to corner the creature but its skills were far stronger than I had expected. It was able to hold its own against myself, Aivenna and Catra." Nivenna said getting his attention.
"One creature able to fight off three others at once? So what happened?" Chaor asks.
"Unfortunately in the middle of our battle a cave in happened resulting in all of us getting separated." Nivenna said.
"It was easier when we thought a human had this battlegear but now this mysterious creature may prove to be difficult." Takinom said.
"Hardly. Send word to every Underworlder, anyone who can bring me the creature in the black coat will be rewarded. We'll find this creature and his battlegear will be mine." Chaor declares.
We soon find ourselves back in Chaotic, as Tom was setting up for his match in the Krellan drome against a guy named Tank. He was a big muscle head with blonde hair.
In the waiting area, Roxas, Erika and Kaz sat together.
"MajorTom and Aggro999 please assemble your teams."
'I'll put all the big guys up front. That way I'll never even have to use Bodal.' Tom thought putting Bodal in the way back.
"Tom your promised." Kaz reminds.
"I said I'd put him on my team, I never said I'd use him in battle." Tom said.
"Lock your decks."
On-screen they saw Tom had Maxxor, Gespedan, Ettala, Xarev, Dractyl and Bodal while his opponent had Tangath Toborn, Ulfhedinn, Blazier, Velreth, Staluk and Raimusa.
"Bodal? Ha! Nobody ever uses Bodal!" Tank mocks.
"That guy uses Tangath Toborn too?" Roxas said surprised.
"Hey he's a good card to have." Kaz said.
"Yeah and a card that spells big trouble for most of Tom's picks." Erika said narrowing her eyes.
"What do you mean?" Roxas asks.
"Look at his formation. Aside from Maxxor these creatures are pretty basic. They might be able to hold their own with the right combos but I'm not sure it'll be enough." Erika said.
"Well let's hope you're wrong for Tom's sake." Kaz said.
"Aggro999 will be the first attacker."
Spinning the location randomizer is stopped on the Forest of Life.
"Tangath Toborn attacks Maxxor!" He declares as they both turned into their creatures.
"Let's get Chaotic." Maxxor declares as a bright light engulfs them.
Appearing in the forest, Maxxor was on the lookout for Tangath Toborn.
'We're playing cat and mouse, and I might be the mouse.' Tom thought seeing no sign of him.
"Viper Lash!" From the trees, three large green snakes shot out at Maxxor.
Reacting quickly, Maxxor summons the Liquilizer and fires blocks of ice destroying the attack.
From the treetops, Tangath Toborn emerged riding a Windstrider.
"Too bad your Windstrider doesn't have an air filter. Smoke Surge!" Maxxor breathes a cloud of smoke hoping to obscure Tangath Toborn's view but when the smoke cleared he was gone.
Confused Maxxor looks around for any sign of him when Tangath drops in behind him.
"You missed." Tangath Toborn smirks.
Flying in Tangath released multiple Flame Orb attacks but thanks to his Liquilizer Maxxor was able to put out the flames with ease.
Firing a blast of water, Maxxor knocks Tangath Toborn off his Windstrider landing back first on the ground hard.
"That's funny, I thought you always landed on your feet." Maxxor mocks.
Getting back up Tangath released a sonic roar blasting Maxxor away.
"Torrent of Flame!" Maxxor releases a powerful flame attack.
Acting quickly Tangath drops to the ground making him burn a large tree behind him.
Using his battlegear Maxxor fired multiple shards of ice hitting the exact same spot.
"What was that supposed to accomplish?" Tangath asks when he suddenly heard a loud cracking noise.
Turning around he saw all of Maxxor's attacks was to weaken the tree behind him.
"Vine Snare!" Holding up his arms, Tangath Toborn ties up Maxxor preventing him from escaping.
As the tree came down, Tangath Toborn leaps out of the way making the whole thing come down on Maxxor depleting more than half his energy.
"Timber." Tangath Toborn smirks thinking the battle was his.
On the board they see a mugician being cast and a melody being played allowing Maxxor to heal most of his energy.
Bursting out of the tree, Maxxor fired his Liquilizer at close range coding Tangath Toborn.
"Yes! Tom used Mugic to get back in the game." Kaz said.
"Thanks to the Song of Resurgence he had more than enough energy to take Tangath Toborn down easy." Erika cheers.
"Please Tangath is way stronger than that." Roxas said hating that his ace was taken down so easy.
"Relax Roxas, you're better with Tangath Toborn than he'll ever be." Erika teases.
"Yeah unlike Tank you actually use your head." Kaz said making him feel better.
"Tough break Tank but with Maxxor's Song of Resurgence and the Liquilizer he's pretty much unbeatable." Tom smirks.
"I'll show you unbeatable. I don't care what it takes, Maxxor's going down." Tank declares.
As the battle progressed Tom used Maxxor to basically destroy Tank's whole team and with each win Tom was getting cockier more and more.
"Man I knew Maxxor was a strong card but I didn't know he was that strong." Roxas said.
"Good? Those two are on fire." Kaz said sipping his drink in victory.
"All that's left is Raimusa and Tom has his whole team." Erika said.
In a vast desert, Raimusa struggles to attack but Maxxor dodges.
"Long ways away from the icy Crystal Range eh Raiumusa? Not so cool huh?" Maxxor teases jumping off the edge.
Growling Raimusa leaps after him only to land in a pit of quicksand while Maxxor was still dangling from the cliffs.
"Oops I thought you knew about that quicksand." Maxxor mocks as Raimusa struggled to get out. "The more you struggle the worse it gets. Guess this battle is done. See you back in the drome." Maxxor said climbing up.
"I'm not done yet." Raimusa growls summoning a Mugician's Lyre. "Chorus of Cothica! This allows me to use the Underworld Song of Returning."
Seeing this on screen Kaz did a spit take.
"He isn't. He can't." Kaz gasps seeing him using the Underworld mugic.
"How did he do that?" Roxas gasps.
"That's what Chorus of Cothica does. It allows you to use any tribal mugic. Very handy to have on you." Erika said.
"I should use that on my teams." Roxas said both impressed and terrified.
In the arena, Maxxor heard the music but just as he looked down Raimusa was coded.
"Yes! I aced the match and I never had to use boring little Bodal." Tom said about to walk out.
"Nuh uh uh." Tank smirks.
Looking at the screen Tom saw Tangath Toborn appear.
"Hey wait a minute didn't I just win?" Tom asks.
"You won the battle but not the match." Erika said appearing on his screen.
"Tom you let your guard down and he used Mugic to bring back his Tangath Toborn." Roxas explains.
"Now it's payback time punk." Tank said spinning the wheel landing on Glacier Plains. "Tangath Toborn attacks Maxxor!"
In Glacier Plains, Maxxor was looking around with a frustrated look on his face.
"I don't believe this. I had this match won." Maxxor growls annoyed.
Sliding in across the ice, Tangath Toborn lands in front of him.
"We meet again." Tangath grins.
"Don't get cocky. Your battlegear is gone." Maxxor said summoning his battlegear.
"Yeah but it ain't over til it's over. Iron Balls!" Firing the metal balls from his eyes, they blasted the Liquilizer out of Maxxor's hands and into the frozen water leaving both creatures without any battlegear.
"Lavalanche!" Both creatures held out their hands releasing their fierce fire attacks.
Clashing in the middle the two attacks make the ice under them crack.
While Maxxor was sent floating down the frozen river on a small chunk of ice Tangath Toborn leaped from chunk to chunk.
Nearing a snowy cliff, Tangath jumps up hoping to climb to safety but ends up slipping and falling into the water.
"Ha! Look at the cool cat!" Maxxor laughs unaware that he was going over a frozen waterfall.
Screaming Maxxor crashes at the bottom turning into code.
As Tom and Tangath appeared back in the drome, Roxas, Erika and Kaz had their jaws dropped in shock.
"What the heck was that? How could he have missed that waterfall?" Roxas asks in disbelief.
"I'll tell you how. His ego got in the way." Erika facepalms.
"And now Tom's out his best monster." Kaz said.
"He can still recover right? I mean he has the rest of his team." Roxas asks.
"Ehh I'm not so sure." Erika cringed.
"Gespiden attacks Tangath Toborn!" Tom said trying to counterattack but lost.
"Tangath Toborn attacks Ettala!" Tank said as Tangath coded that creature too.
"Xearv attacks Tangath Toborn!" Tom said but that one got coded too.
"Get it together Tom. You do not want to go Bodal." Kaz cringed.
"Roxas let this be a lesson. Always make sure you team is balanced. You can't play favorites with any creature even your best." Erika cringed.
"Noted." Roxas said hoping Tom could pull through.
The next battle had Dractyl and Tangath Toborn in the Storm Tunnel and Dractyl was flying all over trying to dodge the debris while Tangath Toborn clung to the walls.
"Whose bright idea was it to put the Storm Tunnel in his location deck?!" Dractyl yells.
"The same guy who's going to win this battle. Wall of Flame!" Tangath Toborn yells as a large fire attack rode the wind and smashed into Dractyl coding him.
"He was on fire. Now he's going down in flames." Kaz said.
Now both teams had only one creature left.
"Go on say it. Say those beautiful words." Tangath smirks.
"Bodal attacks Tangath Toborn." Tom said as both of them transformed and were transported away.
In Kiru City, we see Bodal walking through the very market where Tom first met him.
"Oh great, I'm finished where I started." Bodal sighs.
Leaping in Tangath Toborn lands across from Bodal.
"Go ahead take your best shot." Tangath challenges.
"Pebble Storm!" Bodal released the earth attack but only a few pebbles flew out but fell to the ground not even reaching him.
Bursting into laughter Tangath thought this was gonna be too easy.
Yelping Bodal turned around a corner and made a run for it.
Turning into an alley Bodal saw it was a dead end.
'I have no idea how to get out of this.' Tom thought before remembering something. 'Wait maybe Bodal might.'
Tapping into Bodal's memory, Tom looks around and noticed a small stone with a carving on it.
Putting his foot atop it, a secret hatch opens up.
'What do you know, Bodal really does know his way around.' Tom thought impressed as he leaped inside.
"I got you now Bodal!" Tangath Toborn leaps out only to see Bodal was gone.
Tapping into Bodal's memories again Tom unlocks a secret tunnel system that brings him to the exact spot in Kiru City that he clicks on.
Appearing on a rooftop, Bodal looks down to see Tangath Toborn looking all over for him.
"Vine Snare." From his fingers multiple vines came down tying up Tangath Toborn.
Roaring Tangath slashes himself free.
"Where are you? Show yourself you coward." Tangath calls out.
Looking up we see Bodal was long gone.
Behind him another tunnel opens up revealing Bodal.
"If you insist." Bodal said getting his attention. "Sludge Gush!"
Spitting a nasty sludge attack he nails Tangath in the face before disappearing again.
"You can't hide forever!" Tangath said as Bodal appears in front of him.
"Oh can't I? Flash Wrap!" Bodal blasts Tangath's feet trapping them where he stood.
Growling Tangath Toborn breaks himself free much to Bodal's horror.
Opening the hatch, Bodal jumps into it hoping to escape.
Grabbing a rock, Tangath Toborn throws it preventing the hatch from closing shut.
"Ready or not here I come." Tangath Toborn said opening up the hatch and leaping inside.
"This is fun. What can I do now?" Bodal asks when Tangath drops in.
"No more hide and seek shorty." Tangath said scaring him.
As Bodal runs through the tunnels Tangath chased after him.
"Give it up! I can get anywhere you can now!" Tangath declares.
"But can you get out?" Pressing another hidden switch two large stone doors appeared in between Tangath trapping him in the middle.
Growling Tangath tries pushing them open.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Bodal said exiting out another tunnel.
However Tangath didn't listen and continued to push with all his might, but as he did the ceiling began to crack. As a result the whole tunnel came down on Tangath Toborn coding him.
"Yes! Bodal defeats Tangath Toborn! It's the upside of the century, the millennium!" Kaz cheers.
"That was amazing." Erika cheers.
"Brains over brawns. Wins every time." Roxas said looking at his scan of Bodal. "Maybe Bodal isn't as weak as people think."
"So Roxas any ideas for Tangath Toborn after seeing that battle?" Kaz asks.
"Please, I'd never take advice from him on Tangath. He was lucky he made it that far." Roxas scoffs.
"The winner…MajorTom."
"I don't believe it. It was me and I still don't believe it." Bodal said.
"Bad enough I gotta lose, do I have to keep looking at that annoying little twerp?" Tank asks as Bodal turns back into Tom.
"Believe me, I'm not half as annoying as the real thing." Tom said.
That night at Kiru City, while Tom was going to get his Aerodrone scan from Bodal, Roxas was walking through the streets wanting to tell Tangath Toborn about the battle he saw today.
Little did he know someone had spotted him.
As he made his way through the market something raced past him.
"Who's there?" Roxas asks looking around.
"Hmm you're not what I expected." A familiar voice calls out.
Leaping over the tent Roxas sees Catra land in front of him.
"Whoa!" Roxas yelps jumping backwards.
"What's a Chaotic Player doing out here all by himself at night?" Catra asks getting down on all fours and crawling towards him.
"Uh you know, Chaotic stuff." Roxas said when Catra leans in and started sniffing him. "Uh what's happening?" Roxas stiffens up as Catra circles him.
"You smell familiar. Have we met before?" Catra asks standing up and looking him in the eye.
"Uh no I'm pretty sure I would remember meeting someone like you." Roxas said nervously.
"You think so, I see quite a few of you Chaotic Players wandering the city, sneaking around trying to scan things, and I'll admit I couldn't care less what you do." Catra said.
Slowly Roxas tried to walk away but Catra grabs him and yanks him in close.
"But you have a very unique scent. Something about you that's…different from the other humans. And I swear I've smelled this scent before." Catra said.
Gulping Roxas had to think of a way to lose this catgirl and quick.
"Well…hey is that a mouse?!" Roxas points.
"What?! Where?!" Catra said turning around.
Using this chance, Roxas pushes her off him and made a run for it.
"Oh dammit!" Catra snaps stomping her foot in anger. "Ugh I can't believe I fell for that. If dad knew about this I'd never hear the end of it."
Looking around Catra saw Roxas was long gone.
"You're hiding something human and I'm gonna find out what." Catra said narrowing her eyes.
In a small corridor, Roxas was chuckling as he held his sides.
"I can't believe that worked." Roxas said taking out his scanner. "I'll tell Tangath Toborn this story another time."
Meanwhile in the Overworld Armory, Tom was finishing the story.
"And then wham! I nailed him right between the doors. You should have seen it Bodal." Tom smiles. "Well I'm ready for my Aerodrone scan."
Pausing Bodal turns to face him. "If you're going to lie about using my scan in battle you could at least make it believable. Bodal defeats Tangath Toborn? Preposterous." Bodal said in disbelief.
"Bodal it really happened." Tom assures.
"Lies, lies, lies." Bodal said walking away.
"It's the truth. Ask anybody." Tom said.
"Are you insulting my intelligence?" Bodal asks.
"No, not yet anyway." Tom said following after him.
