Shanan was finally feeling a lot less sad than she had been. They were moved completely into their house now. They had set up their old rooms as similar to how they were as possible and had even made some upgrades to the house. Shanan was even working on fixing the garden up between missions.
She and Kakashi did most missions together. Some Anbu, some regular. And sometimes she and/or Kakashi even went with Shikamaru and a few other people. And somehow it didn't feel too awkward. Even if she did still love him.
They'd been at their house for nearly six months and it was already almost her eighteenth birthday. Kakashi had finished all of the drawings a couple of weeks ago already, but decided to wait until her birthday to reveal them to her as he had been hiding them away in his old closet.
The morning of her birthday he'd gotten up earlier than her, like always. He brought every picture in, set the big ones around the room and put the albums on the bed. Then he went and made their coffee and brought it to her like he usually did and woke her up as he waited for her to notice.
Shanan saw the albums on the bed first and looked confused as she sat up. And then she saw the bigger pictures scattered about the room.
The one he'd done of them with their parents when he was still very young. The one of him proposing. The one of them dancing after their wedding. The one he'd done of them with the twins. Even the family portrait he'd done for Kushina.
Shanan smiled as her eyes filled with happy tears. She never thought she'd see any of these again. She wasn't even sure Kakashi still wanted to draw as she knew that it was something he'd only ever done inside of the Kaitei.
"You recreated all of these?" she said as she looked at him.
"It's... why I've been so tired lately. I've gotten out of bed and stayed up drawing for months. Good thing you're still a heavy sleeper," he said as he sat in front of her.
Shanan set her coffee on the nightstand and leaned forward and kissed him. She should've expected this from him, but she really hadn't.
"Look through the albums. I tried to recreate as many as I could remember and even memories that we never had a picture of. I knew this place wouldn't ever feel like home without proof of our memories," he said softly.
Shanan smiled as she opened the first album.
"Our sexy pictures?" she asked as she beamed. They did have a lot of really good times and Kakashi was good at capturing them tastefully, if not, beautifully.
Kakashi grabbed another one.
"I even made Naruto's again. He's gonna think I'm crazy," he said as he laughed nervously.
"Just make sure you run up and hug him and throw him over your shoulder when you see him," she teased.
"I added some memories of him and Kushina," he said thoughtfully as he flipped to the page to show her.
"I remember that day. You made so much food and nobody could finish their plate except Naruto. Did you add any of Sasuke?"
"I did." He flipped to a new page. "Here's when Sasuke came to live with them."
"I still can't wait to meet them and unlock my memories with them. When did they leave again?" she asked him.
"Just about three years ago," he said regrettably.
"You don't still blame yourself, do you? That was a long, long time ago."
"No. I just worry about how things are gonna be when they get back. That's all. A lot has changed."
Shanan set her album aside and took his from him and set it next to the rest and then wrapped her arms around his neck and pushed him back as she kissed him.
"I love my presents," she said in between kisses. "I hope you never stop drawing me things."
"I hope you never stop singing me things," he said as he squeezed her tight.
She wasn't sure, but she didn't have any memories of singing outside of the Kaitei, but she also knew that she didn't remember her mom, who had taught her to sing. Though, she supposed that Naruto and Sasuke would be the best ones to know for sure.
"Oh, I have one more picture for you," he said as he sat them up and went to grab a piece of paper off of his desk. "You have to close your eyes first."
Shanan smiled and closed her eyes without protesting. She'd always really loved surprises.
Kakashi sat down in front of her. "Alright. You can open them," he told her softly.
He was holding the paper about a foot from her face so that it was all that she could see. "It's a drawing of my ring," she said, surprised as she smiled.
He lowered the paper and revealed a black box with her ring in it.
She stopped smiling as she looked up at him, teary eyed.
"How'd you get this?" she asked, completely astonished.
"I took my drawing in. I described it. I had it made. I knew I'd gotten it right the first time," he said softly as he caressed her cheek. "You deserve the ring you loved."
Shanan threw her arms around his neck and kissed him again.
"Just marry me, ok?" he whispered as he smiled.
Shanan couldn't help but laugh a bit. "Oh, that's how you ask me?" she said affectionately as she kissed him.
He took her kiss, and what happened after as a yes this time.
