Later that day, Kakashi met up with Naruto and Sakura to test their growth in a two versus one battle and they did pretty well.
Kakashi actually ended up giving up early because Naruto threatened to spoil the ending to the new Make-Out Tactics book he'd given to Kakashi from Jiraiya. Which turned out to be a bluff.
"I can't believe you fell for that," Shanan told him as they were walking through the village with Naruto and Sakura.
"I couldn't chance it," he said as he laughed.
"You're gonna read the whole thing tonight, aren't you?
"Of course I am. Do you wanna stay up with me and I'll read it out loud?" he asked as he grabbed her hand and held her back.
"Yeah, I've been waiting for him to release his new book, too!" she said as she put her arms around him. "Oh, speaking of, he's walking this way..." Shanan looked back at Kakashi with an amused expression.
Kakashi turned to look into the crowd and Jiraiya was already just a few feet away.
"Master Jiraiya. Good to see you," he said, still with his arms around Shanan's waist.
"Kakashi. Shanan. So it's true, what a powerful genjutsu that had to have been," he said to Shanan respectfully.
They both laughed nervously as they let go of eachother.
"Naruto told me all about the technique you used on him before we left. I think it helped him a lot to see his parents and to finally receive their message. Anyway, I didn't come by to catch up. Just wanted to tell you guys that we need to be ready. The Akatsuki are ready to make their move."
Shanan looked at Kakashi a bit worried as she gripped his hand. Naruto had just returned home and things were already heating up.
"It'll be alright," he told her quietly.
"I'm just worried about Naruto already having to worry about these guys," she explained.
"Oh don't worry about him," Jiraiya said. "That kid's gonna be just fine. Trust me," he said as he laughed. "Well I'll be seeing you guys soon. I have some business to attend to." And with that he disappeared.
"We should get home too," Kakashi said. "I have to put a dossier together once we finish our book."
"What? Come on. These guys are expecting us to treat them. I'll help you with everything you need when we get home," she said as she kissed him.
"Oh brother..." Naruto interrupted as he and Sakura made their way back over to them. "Part of me thinks this is so weird, but the memories you gave me, make me feel like this is normal. What is happening in here?" he said as he tapped his head.
They couldn't help but laugh at him in his confusion.
"Oh, you'll get used to it. Well, kind of." Kakashi told him.
"Naruto, have you seen Hinata yet?" Shanan asked him.
"No, I don't think so. Why? Does she have something for me?" he said hopefully.
Shanan giggled quietly and looked off to the side. "She sure does..."
"Stop it." Kakashi whispered to her as he chuckled with her.
Naruto laughed at them. "You guys are still the same- what is happening in here?!" he yelled as he walked away from them.
Shanan and Kakashi sat and ate with Naruto and Sakura and enjoyed catching up. Her and Sakura had never really been close, and she wasn't sure why. But she could tell when she saw her, that she didn't have any memories to unlock with her. However, she thought that maybe one day they'd be friends since she thought Sakura was actually really lovely and she really admired her strength and medical knowledge after working together on a few missions.
After they finished eating they walked Sakura home first and then Naruto, who suddenly realized that he wouldn't have Shanan right next to him anymore and was feeling kind of bummed about it.
"Damn. I was really looking forward to crashing on your floor and bothering you until you finally said, 'no more talking, now go to sleep,' just like you always used to," he said thoughtfully.
"Aww!" she said as she put her arm around his shoulder, which was hard as he was several inches taller than her now. "I'm sorry, I didn't even think about that." She thought hard for a minute before looking back at Kakashi. "Hold on a second, Naruto." She turned and went back to Kakashi and whispered. "Can he come stay with us? He's not used to being alone. Please?!" she begged.
Kakashi raised an eyebrow at her and patted her cheek affectionately. "You really don't have to do that, my love. Naruto, would you like to come and stay with us?" he asked him.
Naruto seemed momentarily taken aback before getting really excited. "You really mean it? Do you have room in that tiny apartment for me? Or are you back at the old house?" he asked.
"We're back at the house," Shanan said as she smiled. "Our house," she added fondly. "And we have plenty of space." She walked up to him and slid her arm behind his back this time. "Let's grab your stuff from your apartment. It's a good thing you didn't even get the chance to unpack earlier."
"Yeah, I guess it worked out, huh?" he said thoughtfully.
They stopped at Naruto's apartment and he grabbed his bag and a few other important items to bring and when they got home, they let him choose the room he wanted. He chose Kakashi's old room and they helped him unpack and explained that they would help him make it his own as soon as they all had time.
"I wonder if Sasuke would come and stay when he gets back," Shanan wondered out loud.
Kakashi rubbed the back of his head nervously, worried that Naruto would spill the beans and confuse her, but Naruto had already caught onto the fact that she didn't know much about Sasuke yet, let alone the fact that they had been in love and were really mushy together in the short amount of time since they'd expressed their feelings.
"He might," Naruto said thoughtfully. "But also, he might not. He's a pretty complicated guy," he said as he laughed softly. "You really can't be too sure with him."
Shanan laughed at that. "Uh, yes. People don't talk about him too much, but that is something I've heard." Shanan looked at him seriously. "I hope you'll tell me more soon. Even if he left the village to train with a traitor, I know that you and I still had a strong bond with him. I can feel it in my soul," she said as she put her hands to her chest and furrowed her brow at the thought. "I'd really like to hear stories about him, about all of us."
Kakashi had told her about him as his student and expressed that he was proud of his accomplishments as a shinobi, but he didn't tell her too much out of fear that he'd let the wrong thing slip. And he always felt guilty when she asked him questions that he had answers to, but couldn't bring himself to say out loud to her. He wasn't jealous, he just knew how complicated the whole thing was and since Sasuke wasn't there, it would be really hard for her.
"I have a lot of stories to tell you. He's my brother and I'm not ashamed of him or even angry at him. I once promised you that I'd bring him back and I still plan to," he assured her.
"Thanks, kiddo," she said as she smiled. Nobody else ever talked about him and she had caught on to it pretty early, but she knew by now that Konoha was good at keeping secrets and hiding things. "Alright, get some sleep. We have a lot to do, but we're gonna plan a night to stay up and chat soon. Ok?"
"Yes, goodnight, Naruto," Kakashi said as messed up his hair.
"Goodnight, you two. Thanks for letting me come here with you," he said appreciatively.
Shanan gave him a long hug and thought about the last time she'd seen him in both the real world and in the Kaitei and both parts of her were really proud of him.
