Shanan was nineteen and Kakashi had just turned thirty a few weeks before the day that they died.
When Pain attacked, Kakashi rushed in to help Iruka Sensei, who was then able to escape.
Shanan and Sasuke had been discussing training him on a few of her Sharingan techniques. He'd already been home for about four months. And he was happy to have any excuse to be with her and to get to know her again. She was different in some ways, but her heart was still very much the same and she still made him feel exactly the same as she had when he was younger. They'd been sitting on the floor in his apartment when they heard a lot of crashing and buildings collapsing. They looked at eachother momentarily and then rushed outside and ran off together to find the source.
They'd finally come upon where Kakashi was and he was pinned down and couldn't move as he was nearly out of chakra. Pain had pulled a nail from a loose board and sent it flying directly at Kakashi's head. Shanan turned into water and hurried over to him, but it was moving so fast, Shanan didn't think water alone would stop it. So she solidified herself directly in front of Kakashi and the nail went into her head instead. Killing her instantly.
Time had nearly frozen for both Kakashi and Sasuke as soon as she fell. If either of them had screamed, neither of them could hear the other. Kakashi completely fell apart into a fine mist as he unpinned himself and grabbed Sasuke's arm pulling the both of them closer to one of the Pains. Sasuke readied his Chidori as Kakashi passed through the Pain and appeared on his other side so that they could both hit him with their Chidori. He'd been ready for them, though, as he thrust a kunai behind him just as Kakashi solidified. Kakashi didn't die, but when another Pain sent a missile after them, Kakashi told Sasuke to run and he used up the last of his life to send the missile somewhere else via his Mangekyou Sharingan.
When Shanan woke up she was in Shikamaru's arms and he was sobbing as he held her. Sasuke was squeezing her hand and crying over her, while Naruto was on the other side of Kakashi who was lying right next to Shanan as he slowly opened his eyes.
She appreciated being surrounded by people that she loved, but as soon as she saw that Kakashi was alright, she sat up and threw her arms around him. She didn't think he'd ever squeezed her so tight.
"Don't you ever sacrifice yourself for me again," he told her shakily.
"I didn't even think about it. I just didn't wanna lose you, did you die?" she asked through her tears.
Kakashi pulled away and touched the side of her face. "It's ok, my love, I saw my father. We spoke. He said to thank you for him. He could've left when I came out of the Kaitei, but he wanted to be there just in case I ever needed him. He's gone to be with my mother now," he said softly.
Shanan smiled at him. "I wish I could've seen him too. All I saw was... darkness. I was all alone." She frowned as tears filled her eyes. "I don't ever wanna die again, Kakashi," she told him as tears fell down her face. He held her tight for a few minutes while she cried and then helped her wipe her tears and kissed her softly.
Shanan looked behind her. She saw both Shikamaru and Sasuke looking sad and dejected.
"Thank you guys for staying with me," she looked at Sasuke, "and holding me," she looked at Shikamaru.
She took turns hugging the both of them and they both squeezed her so tight, neither seemed to want to let her go. Her and Sasuke had just been hanging out minutes before she'd died. She knew it must've been a shock for him. And Shikamaru, of course, loved her very much.
"I'm sorry I scared you," she told them.
Naruto ran over to her. "Is it my turn now?" he asked jokingly as he hugged her tight.
Naruto had been off training, so Shanan was a bit surprised to see him there. She definitely couldn't wait to hear about what all had happened.
It had been a few months since the attack. And after hearing about how Kakashi had been able to speak with his father once he'd died, Shanan couldn't stop thinking about how scary it was that she hadn't gotten to speak with anyone, so she wanted to create a new technique.
It wouldn't work for those that died instantly, like her, but plenty of shinobi died slowly on the battlefield or in the hospital. She thought of Obito and Minato. They'd been able to say goodbye. But they were lucky to be near loved ones.
This technique would create a genjutsu where the person dying could say goodbye to a person that they loved. They could see them, hear them and touch them. It would be as if the person were there.
It would take a bit of memory searching to replicate the person receiving the message, but that would only take a split second. And of course it would be easier to replicate them if she knew the people.
This technique would be called Shi no Tenshi.
Having already successfully trained Sasuke in the use of both Kurushimi and Omoidasu, she decided to get his help in creating this technique. It would be theirs together. The goal; help dying shinobi to say goodbye and die in peace.
The person performing the technique would observe the message, the same as in Kurushimi, and then perform reverse Omoidasu on the person that was meant to receive the message. Effectively inserting them into the genjutsu to where they could see, hear and feel the person that had passed.
But, it would also work if the recipient were already gone, like Kakashi's father. They could still say goodbye. Even if the message died with them, as long as it brought them peace.
Shanan and Sasuke had it figured out within a couple of days. The concept was easy, it was just hard to practice since Sasuke still refused to let Shanan do any kind of searching through his memories. She'd had to ask Naruto, but he was happy to help and he got to say goodbye to both of his parents who Shanan, fortunately, knew well. Had he been dying, he would've done so in peace. And that was all Shanan could hope for.
It felt like a victory, but it also made both of them incredibly sad when they considered its purpose.
To use it, would mean that someone was about to die.
