It had been a little over a year since Pain's attack and they were preparing for war.
The third ninja war had happened when Shanan was quite small, but she fought in it inside of the Kaitei. So to her this was her second war, the same as Kakashi. In the last war they'd lost Obito and Rin and all Shanan knew was that she had to protect everyone she loved.
Her and Kakashi had been put in charge of a division together since they tended to work best as a duo. But Shikamaru was standing in for Gaara in his own division and Neji and Hinata were in a completely different division. And then Lee and Guy had been placed in another separate division. Naruto and Sasuke weren't really part of any groups, they were to go where they were needed. So Shanan had a lot of anxiety going into this one.
Fortunately, with Naruto's Sage mode, he glowed and she could spot him from anywhere, and she could feel Sasuke's chakra no matter where he was. So even though they wouldn't be in the same area like the rest, she'd still know they were safe.
The first day saw a lot of injuries and deaths. Shanan and Sasuke spent most of the night performing Shi no Tenshi on anyone they were told wouldn't make it, and everyone else recuperated as much as they could. Kakashi and Shikamaru sat in with the other division leaders. And Naruto kept a general watch over everyone. Shanan hadn't heard from Neji and Hinata or Lee and Guy yet.
Shanan and Sasuke finally had to stop and recover their chakra as well, so they sat in an empty corner and cried silently into each other as Sasuke held her close, since they'd seen a lot of really sad goodbyes that evening. They both cried themselves to sleep, which only lasted about an hour before it was time to get back to the fight.
The second day was a difficult day. They'd seen so many loved ones and legends and even some nuisances that had been raised from the dead by Kabuto. All of the past Hokages, including Minato Sensei, Itachi and Asuma. The Hokage's, Minato and Itachi eventually broke free from being controlled by the enemy and helped the Allied Forces. But Shikamaru and the rest of Team Ten had to fight Asuma.
Sasuke had come to help Shanan and Kakashi at one point, and told them that Naruto was currently assisting Neji and Hinata. Kakashi knew that she had been really worried about everyone, so told her to go with Sasuke to check on them. She pulled Sasuke up with her Storm Cloud Jutsu and they looked down over the battlefield. Sasuke hit a few different enemies with a Chidori strike, before they landed near Naruto, Neji and Hinata.
They hadn't been over there long before the ten tails sent a volley of wooden shards towards Naruto. Everything had happened so fast, but it felt like time had slowed.
The shards flew. Hinata jumped in front of Naruto. Neji jumped in front of Hinata. Shanan jumped in front of Neji. And Sasuke jumped in front of Shanan. Sasuke was about to be hit, but a blue cloak covered Shanan and she sent out a charged water barrier around all of them that incinerated the shards as they hit.
No one was hurt.
However, they were all staring at Shanan with their mouths open until Naruto cheered and ran over to hug her.
"Five whole tails, huh?! And blue! I wondered if you'd get anything from me!" he said excitedly as he laughed and then kissed her cheek before he made his way to the ten tails.
She did feel an immense rush of power, but she also felt peaceful. Naruto had always seemed so angry and wild when his cloak appeared. Shanan didn't feel that at all. She felt like she could see more than she ever had. She felt like she knew things she couldn't know, but she still couldn't read Sasuke, though.
Shanan looked at her friends. It almost felt like she was moving in slow motion. "Neji, Hinata, please don't die," Shanan told them. "I have to go and check on the others and get back to Kakashi."
She still had her cloak as she grabbed hold of Sasuke and pulled him back up into the clouds. He sent down a few more lightning strikes on the way to Lee and Guy. Once they spotted the pair, Shanan rained them down and stopped the three enemies they were fighting almost dead in their tracks. All she had to do was tell them to sleep and they all fell to the ground instantly.
It seemed as though her nine tails cloak had made her capable of some pretty interesting things. At least against these weak minded individuals. She told Lee and Guy the same thing she had told Neji and Hinata and pulled Sasuke back up so that they could head over to Shikamaru and Team Ten.
They were still fighting Asuma and Choji seemed to be struggling the most with it. Shikamaru was staying strong, but Shanan knew it was also very difficult for him. She remembered the day of the funeral and how completely distraught he had been.
Once they landed, Shanan stopped Asuma from moving.
"I can release the jutsu and you can join us or you can go back, Asuma. Which would you prefer?" she asked him. She didn't want to make him fight in the war if he would rather rest.
"I would prefer to help you guys out, if I'm being honest. But I can't really control my body right now."
Shanan laughed and nodded. "I can see that. You're still one of my best friends, you know?"
"Oh, I know all about the Kaitei and what happened in it since dying," he looked at her with tears in his eyes. "I'm sorry I wouldn't let you show me. But, I know you understand why I didn't," he said apologetically.
Shanan smiled softly at him and nodded again. "I know." She went up and stood in front of him. "Release."
And with that, he was able to move again and no longer tried to attack anyone. Instead, he walked over to Shanan and hugged her tight. "Thank you. And I'm sorry I won't be around to give you away again," he said before kissing her on her cheek.
She reached up and put her hand on his cheek and smiled. "It's ok, you'll still be there. Watch these guys one last time?" she asked him.
He nodded gently and the fight with Team Ten was over. Shikamaru nodded thankfully at her as Choji hugged her and thanked her. She smiled at Choji and hugged him back tight before saying goodbye to the group.
She pulled Sasuke up once more and by the time they'd made it back to Kakashi, he had been joined by Guy and Naruto and they were staring down Tobi. Kakashi had obviously been dealing with him alone for a bit as he seemed exhausted. Shanan and Sasuke landed next to him and Shanan went to see if he'd needed any healing.
Kakashi stared at her momentarily. "They both told me that you had a nine tails cloak on. I didn't picture this."
"Are you alright?" she asked him.
"I'll be fine," he told her.
Shanan grabbed his hand just as Naruto had launched an attack against Tobi that had broken his mask.
Shanan, Kakashi and Guy all looked on in horror.
"That's…" Kakashi started.
"Obito?" Shanan said as she walked forward a few steps.
Naruto looked at her confused. "Who is this?"
"He was our classmate." Guy told him.
"Obito, is it really you?" Kakashi asked him.
"If you wish to call me by that name," he said to Kakashi. "But who are you? I don't know you." he said to Shanan.
Shanan took another step as Kakashi grabbed her arm to hold her back. She immediately turned to water and rushed to stand a few feet in front of Obito with her Sharingan activated. "You know me," she said confidently.
He looked at her confused.
Sasuke ran and stood next to Shanan just in case she needed him.
"No I..." he grabbed his head as he tried to think. "What are you doing? How do I know you?"
Shanan smiled softly at him. "We were good friends."
"No, you... Kakashi... he let Rin die."
"Obito, Kakashi and I did all that we could to save her…" she said gently. "Look," she whispered to him as everything went black.
Obito was finally able to see what had happened.
"They locked something inside of me. They called me a Jin… Jinchuriki. I'm going to hurt people if I go back, I just know it. You have to kill me now!" Rin sobbed.Shanan stared at Rin completely horrified. How could she ask Kakashi to kill her?Kakashi looked at her tearfully. "What? I can't do that. Rin, you don't know what you're saying!" he cried.Shanan saw something out of the corner of her eye."Kakashi, lookout!" she said as she tackled him out of the way.One of the Mist Shinobi had sent out a volley of ice shards past Rin and aimed at Kakashi. In the blink of an eye, Shanan activated Chidori as Kakashi created a water spear that he wound through the crowd of enemies before Shanan touched it with her Chidori and Rin intercepted her Chidori as it traveled down the spear on it's way to the enemies. They didn't really have time to react as they both ran to her. Kakashi caught her as she fell and Shanan tried to use her medical ninjutsu on her.Rin managed to say Kakashi's name before dying. There was no way that Shanan could save her.
Black.
Obito blinked as he looked back up at Shanan. Sasuke was still next to her and on the other side of her now was Kakashi. Guy and Naruto had moved closer to her as well.
"So. That's the power of The Blue Sharingan of The Leaf," he said as tears ran down his face. "I don't know how, but that alternate reality is the one that feels real to me," he said, a bit confused.
Shanan nodded. "Kakashi and I would agree with you. I was there and that's what happened and I'll never let anyone try and convince him otherwise."Kakashi grabbed her hand and squeezed it tight.
"I believe you, Shanan. Somehow, I always knew you two would end up together."
"Come home, Obito," she pleaded. "You deserve a normal life. We still talk about you often, we miss you."
"I can't go home. But I can help you win this war," he decided.
If only things had been that easy...
Obito was taken over by Black Zetsu and forced to continue fighting against them. Kakashi tried to send him away with his Mangekyo, but was then pulled into the other dimension as well. They fought, and when Obito came back injured, he sealed the ten tails inside of himself to become its Jinchuriki. However, Madara decided that he had wanted to use the ten tails power and took over as it's Jinchuriki, killing Obito in the process, but not before Sasuke could perform Shi no Tenshi on him.
Once the headquarters was destroyed it was up to Shikamaru to be their chief strategist and up to Shanan to communicate his plans to everyone using her enhanced Sharingan abilities thanks to the nine tails cloak. They kept their distance from the fight in order to observe, but not so far that Shanan couldn't assist with ninjutsu. He wouldn't let Shanan comfort him about his father that had been killed at headquarters.
Nobody seemed to be able to defeat Madara as his strength grew. No ninjutsu seemed to affect him. All that was left was Taijutsu and nobody could do that better than Guy Sensei. He unleashed all eight gates and attacked Madara with his Night Guy technique. Afterwards, Guy was near death, but Naruto kept him alive with his Sage mode.
Madara had just enough strength to awaken an old spirit and suddenly, everything got quiet. As Shanan looked out, everyone was asleep. She looked back at Shikamaru and he, too, was out.
"Release," Shanan said to him calmly.
He blinked a few times and sat up quickly.
"What did you see?" she asked him.
"Nothing, yet. I heard voices. But I can tell you that I was about to see a completely different life. I could feel it."
Shanan searched her mind for the others and when she saw that they were all out, she went to release them.
"Stop, just do Team Seven," he said as he stood back up. "I have a strategy for them."
"Sakura, too?"
"Yeah."
She released everyone in Team Seven and felt them all wake up. "Did you guys see anything?"
"No. Just heard some voices and felt a little funny," Sasuke said.
"It hadn't started yet," Kakashi added.
"Good. Do I need to remove the voices?"
"You can do that?" Sakura asked as she made her way to the rest of the group.
"I think so."
"They weren't important," Sasuke assured her. "Kakashi, I have a message for you from Obito," he said.
"Shi no Tenshi?" Shanan asked.
"Yes, and we need to do it now."
"This'll only take a minute, Naruto and Sakura be on guard for them," Shanan instructed while Sasuke activated reverse Omoidasu and showed Kakashi Obito's message.
After a minute or two Shanan could feel Kakashi wake up again.
"We'll have help," Kakashi said as he stood up.
"Alright, then. Let's do this," Shanan said.
Now that they were all awake and ready, Shikamaru came up with a plan of attack to take the spirit out. It hadn't been easy, but Obito came through and gave Kakashi both of his eyes so that Kakashi could create a perfect Susanoo. Sasuke also made a Susanoo and with both of them, and the power Naruto had received from Sage of the Six Paths along with Sakura's immense strength, and Shikamaru observing from the outside and Shanan relaying his advice and assisting with her ninjutsu at strategic times, the spirit was destroyed. Madara had finally admitted defeat.
Shanan had tried to release everyone from the genjutsu that they were in, but the awakened Sage of Six Paths told Naruto and Sasuke that it was up to them to do it. Sasuke considered things, though, and told Naruto he wanted to take full responsibility and seal the beasts inside of him to keep any future wars from happening.
Naruto refused and they fought into the night. They fought until each of them had lost an arm.
"Why are they doing this?" Shanan asked as they all watched them.
"Well... while they may be brothers, they've also always been rivals and they'll only respect each other more after this," Kakashi explained.
"That's dumb," she said, exasperated.
AN- I had to take some creative liberties in order to condense 200 episodes into one chapter.
