Naruto was surprised to be asked if he'd take on the position of Hokage at such a young age. He was only twenty-eight, but he was so excited to finally be asked, of course he jumped at the chance right away.
Shanan had tried to convince him to change his mind. She didn't want Kakashi to be home and the twins to have their dad, only for Boruto and Himawari to lose theirs. She knew the toll it might take on his family. She even asked Sasuke to back her up.
"Naruto, I know that this has been your lifelong dream, but I've been the wife of a Hokage. It's not easy," she pleaded. "And Hinata is much less outspoken than I am. I still had a hard time letting Kakashi know what a struggle it was for me to be without him so much."
He looked at Shanan sympathetically. "I know it won't be easy, Shanan, but Hinata and I have talked about it. We've talked about it a lot over the years. She knows it's my dream and she's excited for me."
"That's because neither of you truly understand the time and effort it takes to run a shinobi village. And Shanan is right, Hinata has always adored you, she wouldn't speak up even if she did have a problem with it," Sasuke told him.
"Look, I know you guys are just trying to help, but you're kinda bringing me down here. I'm finally having my biggest dream come true and I hoped that you guys, especially, would support me," he said sadly.
"Naruto..." Shanan started. He was right. They should be his biggest supporters. But it was hard to be when she had lived with barely seeing Kakashi for ten years. And Kakashi was the most caring and thoughtful person she knew. If he couldn't make time, then how could anyone else? "Naruto, I just love you. I just wanted to warn you. But... I'll support you because I'm proud of you."
"Way to abandon the mission," Sasuke said sarcastically.
"Shut up..." she said as she laughed.
"I'm sorry, Naruto." She stood up and hugged him and grabbed Sasuke's shirt and pulled him in to join them. "Come and be supportive, jerk," she said affectionately.
"It's ok, I forgive you," he said as he tried to hug the both of them back. "Even the jerk."
Having Kakashi home meant everything to her and the twins. He finally got to be the dad that he had always wanted to be. His time with them had always been so limited. He finally got to have genuine conversations with them and learn about every detail of their lives. He thought he'd done well to be involved before, but was heartbroken to find out that there was so much that he didn't know because nobody wanted to bother him or stress him out.
And now that he had far fewer obligations, he made it a point to be as romantic with Shanan as he could be. They spent a lot of time in bed while the kids were at school, making up for all of their lost time together. They made love, they talked and sometimes they just sat quietly together and cuddled, which usually led to more love making. They both really had needed each other.
Kakashi hadn't picked up a sketchbook in years and he had a lot to catch up on. He wanted to leave his kids with hand drawn memories, so started on a book for each of them.
And they got to have a nightly routine together again, along with the kids. He hadn't been able to read to them much since they were quite little. So he made sure to every night, with Shanan's legs over him, until it was time for the kids to go to bed. And then they'd sit in bed together with Shanan in between his legs as she read to him or sang if he wanted her to.
It was really nice being home, just the four of them, having dinner together.
"Yuki. Hiro. Tell me about your day," Kakashi said as he was cooking. He did most of the cooking now, since he had always enjoyed it.
They were both at the table doing some writing exercises Shanan had given them.
"Oh, Yuki likes a boy in class," Hiro teased.
Kakashi sighed, she was only eight and he wasn't ready for her to be interested in boys yet. "Who is it?" he asked exasperated.
"What? I don't like anyone..." she said shyly.
"Yes you do!" Hiroshi said to her. "It's Shikadai Nara, Daddy."
Shanan had been listening from the couch and turned around quickly and looked at her daughter a bit surprised.
"Ah, well... I hear he's well on his way to being even more clever than his father," Kakashi said as he went up to her and poked her nose gently, "and he's one of the most intelligent people I know."
Yukiho blushed. "He's the smartest kid in class, Daddy, and he has really pretty eyes," she said as she smiled.
Shanan expected no less of a response from Kakashi. He was truly the best person she knew. Sometimes she'd think about him from before the Kaitei and how even then she really admired him. Even with all of his darkness, he was still incredible and so worthy of so much love. She'd always thought that if the Kaitei hadn't happened, she would probably be with Shikamaru. But who would Kakashi be with? It broke her heart to ever think that it might be no one.
Just like it broke her heart when she thought about Sasuke not having anyone. He had so much to offer and such a big heart. He pretended to be cold and unfeeling, but she knew him to be warm and soft.
Sasuke hadn't been around the house as much since Kakashi had been home. But Shanan still went on missions with him and they were still ANBU partners when they were needed for those missions as they were both always highly protective of each other. And he did still help with training the twins and Boruto. However, Shanan still really missed when he lived with them and her chakra missed his chakra.
