Haunted
Prologue:
For more than 20 years, the horrific murder of local honor roll student Carol Walters has baffled authorities and has left her family and friends with no closure. The circumstances surrounding her tragic death are still shrouded in mystery. Just three hours after the 21-year-old sophomore was seen walking home from a party, her nude and badly mutilated body was found in a pool of blood on the floor of her bedroom.
Her throat had been slit, her eyes removed, her torso covered in stab wounds. The case became infamous after the gruesome crime scene photos leaked to the press. The investigation quickly ground to a halt as there was no apparent motive, suspect, or even a lead. The case remains unsolved.
Authorities released the 911 phone call Carol made prior to her death. They hoped someone from the public could identify the unknown voice in the call, suspected to be from her killer, but no one ever came forward. This is the transcript of the call:
June 25, 1996, time 12:13 am:
Carol: (Barely audible) H... hello?
911 Operator: 911, what is your emergency?
Carol: Please help... My name is... Carol Walters, I, uh...
Carol: ...M-My address is 5... 6... (unintelligible)
911 Operator: You're going to need to speak up, ma'am, I can barely understand you.
Carol: (Slightly louder) I... I can't... there is somebody in my house.
911 Operator: ...Ok, I need you to stay calm, ma'am. Are you in a safe place?
Carol: I... I think... Please help me.
911 Operator: Ok, ok, stay where you are. Everything is going to be ok.
Carol: (whimpering) ...Ok
911 Operator: Help is on the way. I just need you to do one thing for me.

911 Operator: Ma'am? Are you still able to speak?
...
Unknown voice: ...She doesn't need your help anymore.

I know in the last AN I said I would upload this Friday, but I decided to upload it today so I can focus on finishing chp. 1 Make Him Whole Again. This story set in Zootopia, was inspired by hladilnik's characters Coral Walters and Daniel. I found Carol's limited backstory fascinating, and I decided to expand upon it. I have made a couple of changes regarding the characters; Carol's murder has been moved to 1996 from 1986 to fit better with Zootopia's timeline, Daniel is not given a sur name in hladilnik's comics, so I'll make one for him. Lastly, Carol's murderer is never revealed, so I've made one as well. Chapter 1 is about 1/3 of the way done and will take a couple of weeks to finish/edit.
Zootopia belongs to Disney, Carol and Daniel belong to hladilnik. All OCs belong to me.
