A SHORT CHAPTER. BUT I DO THINK EVERYONE WILL BE INTRIGUED. ENJOY!
The phone beside him on the empty table rang.
He didn't need to look at the caller ID. Not that there would've been any.
Only one person had this phone number.
And he'd been waiting for this call.
Click. "Hello."
"Tell me your sources informed you as to why I'm calling."
He cleared his throat. "I have been informed." The dread in his stomach knew what was coming next.
Now the voice hissed. "You told me you had all of this covered. Now I'm getting information that not only is she alive, but they've figured out the tech glitch."
"We covered our tracks as much as we could." He kept his voice calm. He wasn't going to apologize. He'd done her the favor. "And as for the girl, I gave clear instructions. Just because those instructions weren't met a whole continent away doesn't mean that I didn't do my job."
He could hear from the voice on the other end that she was getting anxious. And anxious people made mistakes. "She knows things. How do we know that she won't…"
And despite protocol, he interrupted her, "She knows neither you or I. None of our involvement in this will be apparent. I had enough safeguards set…"
She snapped, "Just like you had this whole situation taken care of?"
He let that sit for a moment, twisting his ring between his fingers.
When she again spoke, this time she showed some semblance of respect. "What do we do now?"
Just where he wanted her. He knew this next step.
"You stay low. Keep your ears to the ground, but you've got a part to play."
"You've got to do something. I won't go down for this."
He chuckled, "I'm not. I'll be in contact with certain people. Close people. Once we figure out exactly what she knows or doesn't, then we can proceed."
Then he could hear the panic in her voice, "And if she does…"
Cool. Calm. "Either way, we're going to finish this job." He sneered, "Who knows. This could make little Bess McCord suffer more than we ever thought possible. Bring her daughter back from the dead only to kill her."
"I want it done."
