"Damn! That one hit my eye, Kairi!"
The girl started laughing as Riku put his hand to his face.
"Laugh while you can, Kai. Wait until it happens to you!"
Anyone who had been a fly on the wall would have thought they were being serious. But if you knew Riku and Kairi, you would have got it.
They had done it since they were little - thrown popcorn up in the air, and tried to catch it in their mouths. It might have seemed stupid, but it was fun to them.
'Back when Sora was here…' Kairi thought.
When they got the letter from King Mickey, Sora just left. He even told her he wasn't coming back.
"Kairi?" the silver-haired teen waved his hand.
"Oh… sorry. Just got lost in thought for a sec."
"Hey, its fin… heres a good piece."
As the popcorn soared up into the air in his bedroom, Riku moved his head to catch it. When he turned…
He found his face right next to Kairi's.
He thought about it for a second. One second too long. She pulled her head back, before Riku could even attempt to make a move.
"Riku, you might be able to fight, but you sure as hell can't catch popcorn!" She acted like nothing had happened.
"Hey! You take that back! Get over here…"
When Riku lay in bed, after Kairi went home, all he could do was sit there and think.
'There was something there…some kind of spark…'
He could still picture her face there, her eyes…
'No…she was Sora's…she'll always be Sora's…'And the smile faded from his lips.
'But nothing ever happened between them…right? Hell, I don't know. God. I've always thought about her…but not like this…just as friends…friends…more than friends…more…mmm…'And with that, Riku fell asleep.
Kairi lied down under the sheets, wondering if he was asleep yet.'Riku…why didn't he do anything? Our faces... so close…'
And she thought about him too.
'Sora…I wonder what he's doing. He barely even said goodbye…or at least what I thought he would do…'
Even though no one else was there, she fought back the tears.
'That bastard…he just left me here! Did he even realize what we could have had…I guess we were just best friends…nothing more.'And back came Riku.
'I can't like him…how could I like him? God…this isn't happening…'Her eyes slowly closed with pictures of Riku in her mind.
