Two weeks later Kate felt all hope was gone. The department had videos of Rick, alive but involved in some form of criminal activity. No-one seemed to know where he was , there seemed to be no trace of him anywhere, even after the videos had been watched and located where they were taken.

Kate had taken solace in her own apartment, not able to go back to the loft. So many memories were wrapped up in that building and home. Too many reminders of the life she should have been starting. Martha and Alexis called on a daily basis, looking for any information on Rick. Some days she answered if she had any news but most of the time she let her machine take it. In the messages they begged her to come home but it no longer felt like home without him.

She had been to the station a few times but seeing his face on the board was just too hard for her to deal with and her concentration wavered. She had asked for leave which Gates had granted but that was almost up. She still wasn't sure she could go back but she had to do something, she needed to live and for that she needed money, especially if the doctors appointment she was about to attend gave her the news she thought she knew. She was sure that she knew what was going on but needed it confirmed.

Sitting in the doctors office Kate felt like all eyes were on her. Her face had been plastered over the TV and newspapers for the last few weeks since that fateful day. She chose to ignore the stares and concentrate on the message on her phone. It was from Alexis. 'Please Kate come home, we need you- more than you'll ever know.'

She really wasn't sure how to respond, yes she knew she had practically abandoned them but she had hoped they would understand how she was feeling. She did know that after this appointment no matter how it ended she would head to see them. Going there would be hard but Martha and Alexis needed her and if she was honest with herself, she needed them too.

"Kate Beckett." A nurse called, scanning the room. Take a deep breath Kate stood and followed the nurse through the doors and down the corridor. Opening the door to the Doctor's office she directed Kate to one of the chairs. "Take a seat and let me take some vitals before Doctor comes in."

Kate let the nurse run through the basic tests temperature, pulse ox, and blood pressure, while the blood pressure was a little high, the nurse said it was only to be expected. She also asked a lot of questions which Kate tried to answer to the best of her ability.

After a few moments the door opened and Doctor Cohen walked in. "Kate what a pleasant surprise I haven't; seen you in a few years since you were shot. What can I do for you today?" The woman smiled knowingly.

"I….I….I believe I am pregnant. Two home tests have come back positive and I have few symptoms but I need confirmation." There, Kate had finally said it out loud. She hadn't told anyone of her suspicions and though she had left the positive test for Rick she never got the chance to give it to him.

"Okay, well congratulations. When did you get your positive results?" The doctor asked.

"Almost three weeks ago now." Kate stammered.

"What took you so long to come to me?" Kate knew the doctor wasn't being mean in asking but still she felt the tears build in her eyes.

"I found out just before what should have been my wedding day, but on the day my fiancé disappeared and I've spent the last two weeks trying to locate him."

"Ah". The doctor said with a look of recognition. "While I followed the story I hadn't put two and two together and realised that it was you." She wrote something down before turning back to Kate. "Your vitals all look good but I would like to get some blood work too. And if I can get a hold of the tech, how about an ultrasound?" Kate gulped but nodded her head. It would all be real after the ultrasound if she was in fact still pregnant.

After the bloods had been taken the doctor advised her to remove her jeans and climb onto the bench placing the sheet over her. Doctor Cohen opened the door letting the technician and the machine in. "I'll warn you the gel will be cold." The technician warned as she squeezed the gel onto Kate.

Kate gasped and smiled but turned her face away from the screen. She couldn't take it if the news wasn't good. "Well would you look at that, Kate I think you'll want to see this."

Kate turned and looked at the screen, there in front of her was a video of a squirming little baby. "WOW!" She exclaimed. "Is it okay?"

"Looks to be, heart beat looks good too, would you like to hear?" Kate nodded as the technician flicked a switch and a soft whooshing sound was heard. "That's babies heartbeat. Baby looks to be around 16 weeks and a really good size. I never asked at the beginning but do you have an idea as to when your last cycle was?"

Kate thought for a moment, while still staring at the screen. This was her and Rick's baby, she thought harder. "I guess it was about 4 months ago. There has been a lot going on at work and with the wedding I wasn't really keeping track. I took a test the day before the wedding as I suspected I was and was going to surprise Rick but that never happened." Her voice caught at the end of her speech. Tears built again.

"Kate, I can't begin to imagine what you are going through but what I do ask is don't loose sight of what is to come. I ask that you keep as healthy as you can. Baby looks good now and I'd like to keep it that way." Doctor Cohen said.

"I'll try my best." Kate answered wiping the few tears that had escaped. The technician helped wipe the gel from her belly before leaving her to get dressed again.

Doctor Cohen was sitting behind her desk when Kate emerged from behind the curtain. "I"ve got a few printouts for you and a few pamphlets. I'd like to see you back in 4 weeks where we will do another ultrasound. There's a possibility that we could find out gender then too, but only if baby is cooperative. Is that something you'd like to know?"

Kate wasn't sure, she had always imagined a pregnancy with Rick fully involved and doing things without him seemed wrong. "I'll think about it. Thanks Doctor Cohen." Kate shook the doctors hand before leaving the office, her smile slightly bigger than it was going in. She sent a quick text to Alexis saying she was pooping over. She couldn't help but wonder how they would take the news.
