But you can't be, The man replied, Cthulhu died over 2 thousand years ago.
I was never actually killed. My body was destroyed, but my mind and soul prospered and were sealed down here. I can't see or hear, I can only…dream. Cthulhu said.
You've been alive all this time, how did you find me? How can you speak to me?
Once you were turned into this…your existence connected to my mind. It's like a web, each being who has a little piece of me in them sticks to me.
Do you know anything about my past?
I've only known you since you were mutated, which was 2 years ago, surprisingly.
2 years? But I've only woken up a few weeks ago!
You were in stasis for those years, after that, they dumped you out, thinking you'll eventually die.
The man didn't know what to say. He was talking to Cthulhu himself, one of the biggest evils in history, an ancient god who was only taught in myths and stories.
I'm not a monster, Ren. Cthulhu said. That's just what everyone thought.
You plagued the world with evil and stormed it with conflict, You wanted to conquer all life. How couldn't you be a monster?!
Because that isn't the truth. When Terraria formed, two gods were created alongside it. Xeroc and me. Xeroc was made to shower the world with life and light. I was made for a single purpose too. To spread evil and cruelty.
Why would anyone want that?
The gods above us wanted to make all life perfectly balanced. No too much and no too little. But humans only cared for what they valued. They thought of me as a vile beast, only wanting to corrupt the world with evil. I was only doing what was best for the world, but I guess it wasn't best for humans. So one day I was summoned to them and they murdered me. I was born to do this job and killed for doing it.
Oh…I was told so many variations of this story, but all of them portrayed you as the villain.
That's why I need you, Ren. You're my last hope. You got to know, that not only do I spread evil, but I also maintain it from getting out of control. Once I was killed, the forces began to lose their balance, Xeroc tried to control it with the creation of The Wall, but now it is broken. I'm the only source that can save this planet.
You want me to set YOU free? Cthulhu?
Yes.
How do I know I can trust you, and you aren't just lying to me so I'll help you take over the world?
Listen, Ren, I am not lying about this at all, I know you can't completely trust me on this, but you need to get me back. It's for the sake of the planet. Just please give me a chance.
Even if I did agree…how can I do it?
You need to collect all the fragments of my soul and power to perform a summoning ritual, I will gain my physical form again. If you agree, I will guide you through every step of the task.
The man thought for a long moment as he paced around the cave. He was making a choice that would most likely affect history. He still couldn't fully trust Cthulhu, all the fibs he recall being told before had twisted him into thinking he was a monster, But half of him still believed it.
Deal. The man said in conclusion. But I can change my mind at any time.
Thank you, Ren.
So, what do we do first?
We need a certain vessel to contain the fragments in, But first we need to find an exit for this cavern.
Do you mean there? Said the man, pointing to a large hole filled with ocean water under a ledge of rock.
You don't need to hold your breath, wyrms are genetically made with gills.
The man sank his feet into the frigid water. It was the first time he swam after he woke up, and the icy water made him feel extra relaxed after spending so much time in the winding tunnel that soon led out to the vast abyss. The only light sources were the same blue crystals. Strange clumps of foliage grew on the tenebris boulders and cliffs. Terrifying looking fish swam towards him, when they got near, quickly swam away.
He dove down closer to the seafloor. As he was swimming deeper down, something touched the edge of his hand. He quickly turned in that direction searching for what he had touched– It was a piece of a wall. He searched through the structure, finding that the whole ground was littered with them.
Remnants of the ancient city of R'lyeh.
He explored through every broken wall until he found a rusty barnacle-covered chest sitting in one of the corners. He reached out his arm to flick open the latch when a strange splitting headache crashed through his mind. He was at the exact same place, but much different. The ruins were all completely fixed and built, and the surrounding area was much brighter than before. People swam around, but all were blurry enough that he couldn't recognize them. They swam into the houses and buildings and ran shops around the town. Suddenly the vision began to fade into darkness. In a flash, all the buildings began to crack and crumble into debris. Many people were swimming frantically and others were dead, their corpses drifting through the water. Huge serpents tore out the seafloor, crashing through the buildings. Their 4 golden eyes blinded his before his vision began to turn into pure white and then he was back at the ruins.
Sorry about that, sometimes my mind gets connected with yours, making you see what I think.
Startled, the man tried to ignore the horrid vision by opening the rusty chest. Inside was filled with dirty kelp-covered books and tomes. He pulled out one and flipped through the pages; they were all empty.
Will this tome work as a vessel?
Very much so. While we're still here, you should also go collect some lumenly shards.
Not like I have anything better to do.
As the man traveled through the abyss, another thing caught his eye. On the edge of a boulder, another bright blue light sat there. It had the same color of lumenly but not exactly the shape. He swam toward the boulder and dug out the mysterious object from the gravel. It was a gun built out of voidstone and lumenly.
An ancient magic weapon, you should keep it, it suits you.
The weapon gave out an aura that felt connected to his mana, holding it made his vein flash purple. The man pulled the gun's trigger and out came a storm of lightning bolts that split the rock into several pieces. He was surprised that it delivered such a devastating blow and decided to keep it for the time being.
The rocky ledges were mildly difficult to pass through as he climbed around the dark caverns and collected all the lumenly he could find. The man had taken a dirty cloth-woven pouch he had found in the ruins and stored all the little crystals in. As he neared the seafloor again to grab all the remaining crystals under a rocky bridge a bobbit worm sprang out of the tenebris and got hold of his ankle. But once the bobbit worm realized what it had found, it quickly let go and crept back into its hole.
For some reason, every creature he had encountered in the abyss seemingly avoided the man every time he got close to them. He shrugged off the strange reactions and simply went on with his business.
Is this enough?
Yes.
Then I guess we can head back?
The man began his journey back to the cave he was spawned in. He had remembered the path all the way from here. As he swam the man heard a peculiar noise. The sound of rocks being bashed together echoed through the water. He could still see the glow of lumenly in the distance, but it was moving. Soon the noise came from 3 sources, then 5, then 6. Along with the bright blue was combined with golden yellow. Ghastly echoes of voices soon joined with the noise. They were the wyrms, the same ones from his dreams and visions. They surrounded the man swimming around him in circles.
The hell are these things doing here?
Don't try to escape. Cthulhu said. They aren't going to harm you.
The six wyrms each stopped at their place, their ghastly yellow eyes watched his every move and peered into his soul. He was completely petrified, the wyrms were huge and their rough stone shells made the same noise every time they moved. The biggest wyrm out of the six bent its head toward the man. Its pair of mandibles dripped blue liquid as its 4 eyes stared directly at him. It looked as if the wyrm was inspecting him.
Wrath…The wyrm said.
