Friends?
Having 5 prier concussions, four of them were from my father and of course the last one was from Ricky, I know I have to stay up and not fall asleep...and it was a very long and difficult night! But my long sleepless night wasn't just because I knowingly had to stay up, not sleeping wasn't hard it was the fact that I was terrified all night...thinking those two guys would come barging in my apartment. What if they had been following me and knew where I lived? Luckily Luna gave me a lot of comfort and made it so much easier, she's such a good girl! As morning approaches I'm starting to doze off when my buzzer rings. I go to the door and click the voicebox button.
"Who is it?" I spoke a little skeptical.
"It's Steve, from last night."
"What do you want?" I asked confused.
"Well, I would tell you but I didn't think you wanted everyone outside to hear." I buzzed him in.
I already had the door open when I see him walk up, I notice right away that he went up the stairs and didn't use the elevator but I never really did either, it was so slow! As he walks closer to me it's hard to miss how attractive he is when he gives me a little grin, I keep my stern look. He looks down at Luna by my legs and pets her head, Luna licks his hand, I'm really taken back by this...she's such a traitor!
"What are you doing here?" I ask very bitterly.
"I wanted to check on you, make sure you were doing okay."
"Look I told you last night, I don't need you checking on me. I appreciate what you did for me but I'm fine now, so will you leave me alone." I start to turn away from him.
"Wait..." He starts to say.
"No, I just want to be alone! Even though you helped me I don't trust you, I don't know what your game is but I am not falling for it." I angrily blurt out.
"Game? What Game?" He asked looking confused.
"Look I know your type, no man does anything for a woman for no reason...I don't trust you and am not falling for it, so good-bye." I shut the door in his face.
After I shut the door I take a deep breath and I actually feel bad, Luna even whimpers at me, I look at her and then roll my eyes, regretting this decision and I open the door and he's already starting to walk down the stairs.
"I'm sorry. I don't mean to be a bitch and I do really appreciate what you did for me even though I still think your up to something...and if I haven't said yet, thank you." I said in one breath, "Your probably thinking why did I ever help that bitch, I should have left her alone."
He walks back up to me and folds his arms in front of him, "so your thanking me but also insulting me by saying you think I'm going to hurt or do something to you? That I have some scheme up my sleeve?" He asked with a raised eyebrow and the slightest smirk on his face.
"Yes. Your all the same, every single one of you is a piece of shit and just because you have a face like that doesn't mean your going to fool me...your a man after all." I coldly tell him with my arms folded. I'm waiting for him to cuss me out or just leave like all of them do when I tell them off or insult them.
"Your welcome."
"What?" I asked stunned.
"I said, your welcome." H repeated.
"Why are you being so nice? I have been a total bitch to you all night, I just insulted you and that's your reaction." I snarl, I'm getting really annoyed that he's still being so nice.
He softly exhales, "look, I get it. You went through a lot last night, I couldn't even imagine what that was like for you...and I bet it didn't help you waking up in a strangers home...but mostly I know what it's like when people don't turn out to be like you thought and making it hard to know who to trust...and for the record I would never regret saving you and I would do it all over again." He softly smiled, I'm speechless.
"Oh, well I gotta say that was a good speech...how'd you know I don't trust people?" I spoke after a few minutes.
"Just a hunch."
"Well for the record I do trust people, it's men that I don't trust...your all assholes." I sternly told him.
"I think that's a bit harsh, not all of us are like the guys that attacked you last night." He defended.
"It's not them that I am entirely talking about," I quietly said under my breath looking down at the ground, not wanting to make eye contact with him. It's quiet for a few minutes before I look back up and I see he's observing me somehow which again makes me uncomfortable. "What?" I asked while he leans against my door frame.
"Well I'm thinking...how about we become friends?" He suddenly proposes.
"What? Why?"
"Because...you look like you could use one and I can't let you keep believing that all men are assholes or would hurt you...and to tell you the truth...I could use a friend too." He tells me.
"Damn again with those speeches." I softly exhale. "...Trust me, you don't want to be my friend...I'm a bitch plain and simple." I warn.
"...I don't think so...I think there's more to you then even you think." He strongly proclaimed with a side grin.
"I don't know...what if..." I start to think of all these scenarios.
"What if what? You already hate men so what do you have to lose?...Can't you at least try?" He interrupts giving me puppy dog eyes.
"...Fine, we can be friends, no funny business, right?" I asked with a pointed finger.
"Of course not, we're just going to be friends." He agrees sternly. "And just so we're starting off with a clean slate...I'm Steve Rogers." He sticks his hand out.
I shake it, "...Iris Watson."
He softly smiles, "it's very nice to meet you Iris...now would you like to get some coffee down the street? I'm sure your exhausted and dying to go to sleep." He suggested after a few seconds of silence.
"Sure, why not. I'm buying my own." I confirm.
"Of course, like I said we're friends, this is not a date." He responded even though his mind was somewhere else at the moment.
We went to a little coffee shop down the street and sat outside, I took Luna with us just in case. Steve's petting her and again I'm so confused by this because Luna doesn't let anyone pet her, she gets scared and puts her head down and tries to hide behind me. It took months for her to stop being scared of Amber and Renee. It's due to her years of abuse by her bastard ex-owner but with Steve she doesn't coward at all, she lets him and licks his hand.
"She's a good dog...yeah, your good girl, aren't you?" He massages her ears which she loves, she's wagging her tail like crazy.
"I found her being abused by her owner, so I stole her." I proudly told him.
"Good for you." He replied with a smile. I thought he was going to judge me for stealing her but he didn't.
I sigh and slightly roll my eyes, it's so frustrating that everything I say doesn't get to this guy! "Nothing bothers you, does it?"
I hear him snicker, "a lot things bother me...abusing animals for instances...and she's clearly in a good home and happy now, right?" I have no choice but to nod my head.
We sat at the coffee shop for another 30 minutes making little small talk, mostly about Luna until we went back to my apartment. He stood at the front door while I brought Luna into her room so she wouldn't try to run after him...again traitor.
"Thanks for the coffee." I simply spoke trying to be nice.
"Well, I didn't do anything since you bought your own but maybe we can do coffee again tomorrow, again as friends." He offered.
"...Okay...fine. I'll see you later then." I accepted.
"Bye." He said before I closed the door and was finally able to get some sleep.
Now your probably thinking why would I agree to this after I've been so adamant about never trusting a man. Well believe me I don't trust him but no man has ever offered to just be my friend before, I mean he never even asked me out so I'm actually intrigued. Plus he did save my life last night and stayed with me the whole time so I guess I kind of owe him one, so I'll just humor him until he gives up, I mean I know he will and that this "friendship" won't last long, I give it a few days tops and even then I think that's pretty generous. But what is the scam? I don't know what he is up to but he's not going to fool me! He's no different then any other man!
...Oh boy, what am I getting myself into?
Of course Luna is going to love Steve, she can sense a good person! And Iris agreed to be friends, at least that's a start!
