Ambiguous Dreams

Prologue

A somewhat torpid and unimaginative photo frame surrounded a dust-collecting photo of the Burton family. Luke gazed upon his ever so happy family, his eyes twitching, his knuckles cracking, his throat burning. As dire as this may have sounded, this was the best Luke had felt in a long time. On several occasions he couldn't have passed the photo without looking the other way, or turning it around. However, now he could look prominently into his mother's disturbingly hypnotic eyes and not give a damn. He didn't care anymore, no longer did he feel disgust for this woman he had to call his natural mother. He no longer had to listen to her ramblings, her lies or even hear her voice.

His mother had past away, something to do with her liver. Luke hadn't really paid attention to the hospital when they rang. They just droned on about something she had caught while in Japan. A virus? He wasn't sure. Nor did he care. All he had left to do was, go to Japan for her funeral. And why go to the funeral of the mother that beat and tortured you? It was some form of morality that Luke had in him, some kind of decency. He didn't like part of him but be that as it may if he didn't attend the funeral he thought that his mother would haunt him forever. Not in an ethereal form of course but in a mental way and Luke wanted to avoid that from now on. Luke drew his attention away from the photograph and focused upon the oblong mirror in his hallway.

There was something odd about this mirror. For one thing, Luke had never seen it before. For another, the border surrounding the mirror was coloured a rusty blood red tint. He started at his reflection. Something wasn't quite right with the person staring back at him either. His features were all the same, Short black hair, muscular build even had the same clothes. His eyes though, they were closed. Amongst all the thoughts rushing through his head, Luke could only focus on one. A dream? No. Impossible.
He stepped away from the mirror. Yes, it was unusual to have closed eyes in a mirror he had never seen before. But, he had never had a dream were he could think for himself before. He was in control, he chose to stare at the photo and he decided to look into the mirror. He wasn't under the control of his unconscious mind, he couldn't be.

Before Luke could do any more reassuring he noticed something that had to prove his theory wrong. The walls around him, they began to liquefy. His walls were melting. He fell into a state of bewilderment as all the walls surrounding him melted away to reveal a disturbing shade of rusty red. The same colour as the mirror border. Luke peered over towards the mirror once more too see the figure staring back at him had opened his eyes. A sudden pain in Luke's right temple caused him to shout out in a cry of pain. All of a sudden his vision turned dark red, he heard an eerie buzzing noise behind him. But before he could see what it was his sight left him.
