Alternate Scene 8:

Shelby watches from the audience as Rachel walk up to the MC to represent her team. She hopes her daughter gets to sing. She also hopes she doesn't push herself too hard. Shelby has her doubts about that, though. The MC gives the directions, then hands the hat to Blaine. The boy draws a song and shrugs. The MC holds the hat out to Rachel and she pulls a song. Rachel immediately starts laughing, but then tries to restrain it. Shelby watches as Rachel struggles to put her show face back on, but she is obviously very amused.

Blaine looks at Rachel curiously and steps closer. He takes her hand and tilts it towards him so he can read the song she pulled. The Warbler gets an odd look on his face.

Rachel turns to him. "Isn't that the song that you're supposed to—"

"Yes, yeah, uh huh, yup." Blaine cuts her off in a tight voice. "It is."

Shelby can't tell if the boy is trying not to laugh or cry. Noting their odd reactions, the MC questions them.

"Is everything okay?"

"Yeah." Rachel smiles at him. "It's a good song."

Blaine nods vigorously. "Good song."

Rachel's grin takes on an odd edge. "I really like the beat."

Blaine slaps a hand over his mouth to try to hold in his laughter. He is not successful. His shoulders shake from his repressed laughter. Rachel is doing her best to bite back her own laughter. Shelby grins, happy to see them having fun and finding herself extremely curious as to what song it is.

The MC nods slowly. "So….you'll sing it?"

Rachel nods. "I think I have to."

Blaine has tears of mirth now sliding down his cheeks. The MC still looks confused. "And what song did you select, young lady?"

Rachel answers him with a large smile. "Stayin' Alive by The Bee Gees."

Startled, Shelby lets out a laugh. Around her, other parents of the New Directions are also chuckling. Several members of the New Directions wander on stage looking torn between being amused and being upset.

"That is a good song." The MC agrees, but still seems confused. Then his face lightens. "Say, did you kids know that this song is what you're supposed to keep in mind when performing CPR? The beat of the song is the exact—"

"Yeah, we know." Santana snaps at him before glaring at a laughing Rachel.

Shelby watches her daughter whisper into Blaine's ear and the boy absolutely loses it. His laughter is contagious and so despite not knowing its source, many people join him in laughing.

"What's going on?" The MC asks.

Rachel turns to him innocently. Blaine tries to stop her but she ignores him. "I was just asking Blaine if he thought some people actually sing along while doing CPR."

Some people laugh, but most, like Shelby, cringe. Imaging the kids singing "Stayin' Alive" while performing CPR on her daughter is not amusing to her. Though it seems to be amusing her daughter. Rachel is trying very hard not to laugh while apologizing to Kurt and the others.

"Okay, I'm lost." The MC admits. "Why are you all reacting like this to this song?"

Rachel shakes her head. "Inside joke. Let's sing!"
