Whiskey Lullaby
Disclaimer: You know the drill. It never was mine. It's not mine. It will never be mine. That's just life.
He had just got home from the war. He couldn't wait to see his fiancé. He hitched a ride with old Remus. When they reached her house, he thanked Remus and hopped out. Sprinting to the door, he knocked, she didn't answer. He figured she was out and he'd wait inside for her. He pulled out his key and opened the door. Stepping inside, he heard laugher. He knew it was her laugh. He followed it up the stairs and onto the second floor. He saw her door was open. He pushed it open and there she was lying in bed with his best friend. How could they? He thought. He yelled and ran outside and to his old truck. He started it as she ran outside yelling that she was sorry and to come back. He just kept driving. He went to a bar and tried to drink away his pain.
She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette
She broke his heart he spent his whole life tryin' to forget
We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind
Until the night
He went to a hotel and took out his old pistol. He wrote a note and laid on the bed with the note on his pillow. He put the pistol against his head. He took one last swig of beer and pulled the trigger of the gun.
We found him the next day with a note that said I'll love her till I die. We buried him under his favorite willow tree. I swear to this day I heard angels singing a Whiskey Lullaby.
He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees
We found him with his face down in the pillow
With a note that said I'll love her till I die
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby
Everyone talked about her and what she'd done. Some said she cheated on him with their best friend. Other's her brother. One person swore he had seen her tell him she didn't love him and she wasn't going to marry him. She spent the years after his death drinking. She would do everything to make her life seem normal but everyone knew she drank away her pain. She tried to drown out him and his memory but she couldn't get drunk enough to get him out of her mind.
The rumors flew but nobody knew how much she blamed herself
For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath
She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind
Until the night
She went home one night. Some say she was drunk. Other's said she was on drugs. I don't think she was either. She pulled an old army rifle, which had belonged to her father, out and loaded it. Lying on the bed, she looked at his picture, hugged it close to her. She held the rifle to her head and pulled the trigger.
She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away his memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength she had to get up off her knees
We found her with her face down in the pillow
Clinging to his picture for dear life
We laid her next to him beneath the willow
While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby
We found her the next morning like this. We buried next to him under the willow. I was young only 11 at the time but I still say I saw them hug under that willow. Maybe I imagined it but I believe he forgave her. As I walked away with my parents, Bill and Fleur Weasley, I thought about what was written on the tombstone, which to this day is still ingraved in my mind.
