Chapter 31: Old Friends, New Friends
Meanwhile back in Los Angeles, Marcy and Ethan has arrived at Thai Go with their bicycles. They got off the bikes, locked up their bikes at the bike holder with their locks so that it never gets stolen.
"Well, here are." said Marcy.
"So, this is where your friends work, huh?" Ethan asked.
"Yep, that's the one."
"Sounds cool. How often do you come here?"
"My dad and I usually come here for lunch or dinner many times."
"Ah, that make sense."
Marcy and Ethan walked through the door when the bell rang. Then it shows Mrs. Boonchuy working at the register desk wearing her green apron and red bandana on her head with her tied up. She looks up and smiles at them.
"Hi, Mrs. Boonchuy!" Marcy chimed.
"Hello, Marcy." Mrs. Boonchuy greeted. "How are you been doing?"
"I'm doing fine. Remember my friend, Ethan?"
Mrs. Boonchuy looked at Ethan waving his hand a little.
"Hello." Ethan greeted.
"Hello, Ethan. How are you?"
"I'm doing all right. Marcy helped me finishing my essay for my school work."
"That's very sweet of her. So, the usual?"
"Yep, table for two please." said Marcy.
"Alright then." She turns her head to the doorway to kitchen when hollers. "Honey! Two noodles for Marcy and Ethan!"
"Two noodles?" Mr. Boonchuy repeated offscreen.
"Yes!"
"Okay, coming right up!"
"Your usual will be ready when it's done." said Mrs. Boonchuy when looked at the teens.
"Thank you, ma'am." Marcy thanked her.
"No problem."
Anne comes out from the kitchen wearing her green apron and red bandana on top when her hair is tied up like her mother. She looks at her friends smiling.
"Hey guys." Anne greeted.
"Hi, Anne!" Marcy chimed.
"You here for lunch?" Anne asked.
"Yep, just me and Ethan." replied Marcy.
The Thai girl looked at Ethan smiling.
"You go on a date?"
Ethan blushes a bit.
"Um... we're just friends." said Ethan nervously.
"Come on, Anne. This restaurant can't work by itself." Mrs. Boonchuy teased.
"Yes, mom." Anne took a glance at her friends. "I'll see you in a bit."
"Okay." replied Marcy.
Both teens walked over to the table while Anne went back to the kitchen. Then suddenly, the bell rang when the door was open. They looked at Darrel that he is now wearing his casual clothes. He's wearing olive t-shirt with Yin & Yang symbol on it, brown shorts with belt, grey socks, and black shoes.
"Hi, Mrs. Boonchuy. Sorry, I'm late." said Darrel.
Mrs. Boonchuy notice this, but smiles warmly at him.
"It's alright, Darrel. You're five minutes early and just in nick of time."
"Thank you."
"Of course."
Marcy smiles at him. They were good friends since they were kindergarten and then they became dungeon buddies when playing D&D. Ethan was surprised that his friend works here too.
"Hi, Darrel." Marcy greeted.
"Hey, Marcy." Darrel greeted. "How's my dungeon buddy?"
"I'm doing good."
"Hey, Darrel." Ethan greeted.
"Hey, buddy. What's up?"
"Nothing much, but you work here?" Ethan asked.
"Yeah, I'm doing this because I have debt to pay." Darrel answered.
"How?"
"Sasha left without paying and I don't have my money to pay for food. Then I ended up work here instead." Darrel explained.
"Ooh, that's terrible. Isn't it illegal for kids to work here?"
"Not when I'm older."
"That's true. When my family runs for a family restaurant, my daughter can help sometimes." Mrs. Boonchuy added.
"Ah, gotcha." said Ethan.
"Well, time to get to work." said Darrel as he went to the kitchen.
Both Marcy and Ethan looked at each other.
"Do you know about this?" Ethan asked curious.
"Yeppers, Anne told me what happen last year when he didn't pay his money for food." Marcy answered.
"What about Sasha?"
"Oh, she got into a little argument with her mother and she doesn't want to talk about it. Good thing my dad and my uncle taught me to get safety smart."
"So, they're like teachers, huh?
"Yep, I did for fire safety, water safety, home safety, online safety, environmental safety, weather safety, theme park safety, and international safety."
"Whoa! Now that's a lot of safety."
Mrs. Boonchuy approach when setting down two glasses of water.
"Here are your drinks."
"Thank you." Marcy thanked her.
She nodded and return to work.
"So, Marcy, can I ask you a question?" Ethan asked kindly.
"Of course." replied Marcy.
"How long have been trusting Sasha?"
"What do you mean?"
"We've known each other since kindergarten. We go to school together from elementary school to middle school. Why's that?"
"Well, before I met you, Sasha is the only friend that Anne and I been had. She protects me from bullies whenever she's with us. I trusted her with my life."
"I really appreciated for her, but don't you think when she's being bossy?"
"Who told you?"
"Frank."
Marcy dropped her smile a bit. She remembers about one of her friends, Frank. He used to be friends with her and Anne until Sasha shows up. When they grow up, she keeps her and Anne for herself, pushing them around, and end her friendship with Frank.
She remembers when he almost went to boarding school, but her adoptive dad and her uncle cleared his name with her help prove that the police picked the wrong kid. It broke her heart when most friends ended their friendships. Ethan reaches his hand to her.
"Hey, it's gonna be okay. We'll figure this out if we work together." said Ethan.
She looked up at him smiling softly. Suddenly, Anne comes out from the kitchen carrying two bowels of noodles in each hand and one bowel of dumplings on her head.
"Order up!"
Anne walks towards them and set the bowels of noodles first, then the dumplings, and now two chopsticks.
"Enjoy your meal, you two lovebirds." Anne teased.
"Anne!" Marcy embarrassed a bit.
"What? Just thought I could give you some time alone together."
"Yeah, but if my dad finds out what we've been doing, he'll totally freaked out."
"Let me guess, overprotection dad routine like my parents use to do?" Anne guessed.
"I heard that." Mrs. Boonchuy hollers when entered the kitchen.
"Yes, exactly." replied Marcy.
"Alright, I'll tone down a bit." said Anne before she went back to work.
"You have to excuse her. She's kinda like... love expert." said Marcy.
"Is that why your dad doesn't trust me?" Ethan asked.
"What? No! Of course not! He's just basically barely known you. That's all."
"Uh, huh. I see."
Ethan first picked up his chopstick to start eating his meal. Marcy picked her chopstick as well and start eating her noodles. Anne took a peek from the kitchen when staring at her friends eating. Anne knew that her childhood friend is dating, but never noticed at first.
Darrel sneak peek as well when he looked at his friends and then took a glance at Anne's staring.
"What are you doing?" Darrel asked.
"Just looking at my favorite love birds." Anne answered.
"Uh, don't you think that you're invading their personal space?"
"Well, what about you? Am I involving your personal space with Sasha?"
Darrel recalled for a moment when he used to be Sasha's boyfriend, but what has changed him when she treated him that way and then started to develop his feelings, but he couldn't denied it. He does care a lot about Anne and sees her as a friend.
"You do have your point."
Marcy took out her phone to text her dad that she's having lunch in case she left, but she didn't even know that her dad and her uncle just left without a single sound. Marcy wasn't paying attention when her chopstick picked up Ethan's noodles and slurped on her lips.
Ethan wasn't paying attention either when it took him practice to use his chopstick to pick up his noodle and start slurping. When they both reach the noodles at the end until their lips met. They both freeze with eyes wide and blushing.
Anne gasp softly when took a picture from her phone while Darrel stunned. Both Marcy and Ethan quickly release their lips and look away with embarrassing look. They swallowed their meal and took a glance with their eyes.
Instead, they started to laugh softly. Marcy giggles while Ethan chuckles nervously. Anne could not believe that her best friend has kissed a boy. Darrel crosses his arms smiling.
"Well, what do you know." said Darrel.
Mrs. Boonchuy noticed when they were standing the doorway from the kitchen.
"What are you two doing?" Mrs. Boonchuy asked.
Both Anne and Darrel quickly turn around when startled.
"Nothing!" replied Anne.
Her mother took a glance and looked at Marcy picked up a dumpling by her chopsticks and give it Ethan with his mouth when start chewing as the girl giggles. Mrs. Boonchuy smiles warmly.
"Aw, how lovely."
"It sure is." replied Anne.
"You know, one day you'll have your boyfriend sooner or later."
"Mom!" Anne whines.
"I'm just saying. Back to work, you two."
"Yes, ma'am."
Anne went back to work while Darrel follows behind. Mr. Boonchuy took a glance at his wife when he noticed.
"Is everything okay, hun?" Mr. Boonchuy asked.
"It's fine, dear. They're just eating." replied Mrs. Boonchuy.
She resumes working, but the moment when they reminded her when she used to have a date with Anne's father before they got married and then moved here. She sighs smiling at the teens having their meal.
"Young love. I hope her father is okay with this. I hope."
Meanwhile far away from Thai Go, Eddie is still driving a pickup truck throughout the city. He looked at the map from his phone to find the orphanage where his sister used to live in before her adoption.
But suddenly, he felt a bump that just jumped when the truck shook. Eddie looked at the mirror to see what's going on. He turns on the blinker to pull over at the side of the street so that he could let some drivers to pass by.
He got out from the truck to check what's going on. He first checks two tires on the left side, then he walks over to the right side from front. When he walks to back, but then he noticed that this tire was flat.
He kneeled just to see what cause has the tire flat, but couldn't figure out what has caused a flatten tire.
"(sigh) Great, how am I supposed to find the orphanage like this."
Then suddenly, a red pickup truck shows when noticed about this. Eddie turns around when the red truck pulls over until there were two teenage girls stepping out from the truck.
First there was an African woman that has a chocolate hair with two buns and her goggles on her head, wearing her shirt of the colors of the bisexuality flag, olive pants, greyish gloves and boots, and her light brown jacket around her wrist.
And then there was an Asian-American girl that has black hair and some pink with blue scrunchies that tied her hair, wearing her dark blue clothes, greyish gloves, tennis shoes, and her goggles on her head. She is also wearing her band aid on her cheek.
"Hey, you need a lift?" ask an Asian girl.
"Uh, yeah. My tire just got flat." replied Eddie.
They walk over where Eddie is standing. An African woman kneeled to the tire, but she noticed when she pulled something out from the tire and described something.
"Yep, that's a glass shard alright." said The black girl.
"Glass shard?" Eddie repeated.
"Yeah, someone just toss out an empty bottle rather than toss it away." replied An Asian girl.
"Ugh, littering are the worst." annoyed The African girl.
"Tell me about it. Are there any spare tires that I can use?" Eddie asked kindly.
"Of course, we got some spare tires at Palm Tree Community College."
"Really?"
"Yep, I'm Ally and this is my girlfriend, Jess." said Ally introduce herself and her friend.
"You called us IT Galz for short." said Jess.
"I'm Eddie. It's nice to meet you, girls." said Eddie shake his left hand with Ally.
"You too."
"So, where are you from?" Ally asked.
"I'm from Taipei, Taiwan."
"You're from China? My parents are from China too before I was born."
"Nice."
"Do you have your parents?" Jess asked kindly.
"(sigh) I used to have my parents, but they died in a car crash when I was young." Eddie answered softly.
Both girls dropped their smile and felt bad at him.
"Oh, we're so sorry." Jess apologizes softly.
"It's okay. I live with my grandparents until I'm 17 years old and I moved here to look for my sister."
"Oh, what's her name?"
"Marcy."
"Wait, did you say Marcy? As in Marcy Wu?" Ally raised her eyebrows."
"You know Marcy?" Eddie asked surprisingly.
"Know her?! She's the best videogame player ever!" Jess answered.
"Yeah, she beat other players and won the game expo for over 5 years!" Ally added.
"I didn't know you had a sister! Where were you all this time?"
"Well, it's a long story." replied Eddie.
"Hmm, alright. Let's hook this truck up and we'll get your tire switch in no time." said Ally.
"Thank you so much."
"No problem."
Turns off the engine and let the IT Galz hooked up the pickup truck to their truck from the back. Ally scootch over next to Jess so that Eddie can get in. When Jess start driving, pulling the pickup truck with flat tire and drove away.
Later on, they have arrived at Palm Tree Community College as Jess parked the truck. They got out from the truck and unhooked it. Jess pulls out the lifter that lifts car when set it behind the back of truck.
"So, how long have you been separated from your sister?" Ally asked.
"When I was four years old. She's only 5 months old when my parents dropped her off." replied Eddie.
"Aw, that's sad. Why would they do that to both of you?" Jess asked.
"I don't know, but what my grandfather told me that they separate us to protect us from any criminals."
"Ugh, I hate criminals. They're the worst. If only we have superheroes here like the Avengers, everyone will be safe." replied Ally when took out her tools.
"So true, but then again, they're in New York." Jess added.
Ally opens the garage door with full of tools and supplies. Jess walks over to get the spare tire and rolled out towards the truck. Eddie rewires the screws from the wheel until Ally removed the flat tires from the back of the wheel and let Jess put the new tire in.
"There we go."
"Alright, now I'm curious. How long have two been girlfriends?" Eddie curiously asked.
"Oh, we've been couples since high school." Jess answered.
"It's okay to be normal. And sometimes we are not into some kind of boys. No offense." Ally added.
"Non taken." replied Eddie when wired the screws back in.
Later on, they set the truck down gently and took the lifter off from underneath.
"Thanks for the lift, girls." Eddie thanked his new friends.
"No, problem." replied Ally.
"So where are you going next?" Jess asked.
"I'm going to the orphanage to find out how she was adopted." Eddie answered.
"Well, good luck. However, she was adopted by two dads-" Jess words were cut off.
"Don't you mean her dad and her uncle?" Ally corrected her.
"Right, sorry."
"Two dads?" Eddie confused.
"I wouldn't say two, but they were just like brothers. That's what the article says." replied Ally.
"Okay? Well, it was nice meeting you girls."
"You too."
"Whenever you find your sister, tell her we say hi." said Jess.
"I will, and thank you!" Eddie thanked the girls after got in the truck.
"You're welcome!"
"Take care of yourself!" Ally waved.
Eddie starts the engine as he drove away from college leaving both Ally and Jess waving their arms. He looked at his phone again to find the orphanage on the map as he resume his destination.
"Those girls are seems really nice. Now, onto the orphanage."
So far, so good. Now the next chapter will be up next. Stay tuned!
