Chapter 40: What A Girl Is
The next morning at Saint James Middle School, Eddie arrived by the drop off center where he dropped off his sister. They woke up a few minutes ago after their long nap. They've been dressed, then eating their breakfast, and they've already said goodbye to her adopted family before they left to go to school.
Eddie took a glance at Marcy that's been staring out the window. He has never seen his sister being quiet since they left the house. No dared to ask her or talk to her about the incident. She's been through a lot of pain because of how torn she has been.
He felt the same way when he felt hurt that his grandparents didn't tell him in the first place since he has last seen his sister at the park with her adopted father. He already forgives them long ago. He really wanted to help her by not going through the same pain he had.
"Hey, are you gonna be okay?" Eddie asked softly.
She looked at him before she smiles softly.
"Yeah, I'm okay." Marcy answered.
"Are you sure?"
"I'm positive."
"Alright, I'll see you later before lunch or after school."
"Okay, thanks Eddie."
"No problem."
Marcy got out from the truck before he went to the parking lot to go to his school. She sighed softly and walk towards to the school's main entrance. As Marcy pass by some students when ignore them that they've been string at her while whispering about her. She hasn't heard anything until she reaches to her locker.
She has gathered her belongings and close the door to lock it. Just then, when Anne and Sasha approach by the locker. They didn't notice that she looks very quiet rather than talking about her games or her school work.
"Hey, Marcy." Anne greeted.
"How's my favorite girl?" Sasha asked kindly.
"Oh, hi girls. It was fine actually." replied Marcy.
"You okay, Mar-Mar? You've been like... quiet from that time." said Sasha.
"Yeah, I've been texting you, but you've been busy." Anne added.
"Sorry girls, it's very complicated and I don't want to talk about it." Marcy answered.
"Are you sure? You don't sound like cheerful girl."
"I'm fine, girls. I really don't want to talk about it."
"Marcy, we're your friends. You can talk to us. We wanted to help you." said Sasha softly.
"She's right. If you can tell us, we won't tease you." Anne agrees.
Marcy really wanted to say no, but she couldn't because she trusted her best friends. They've been friends as long as they trust each other. She sighed softly.
"If I told you, will you keep it a secret?" Marcy asked quietly.
"Of course, we can. You can tell us everything." replied Anne softly.
"Okay, but let's go talk somewhere without anyone's involved before class starts."
"Good idea. Let's head to the restroom." Sasha suggested.
They nodded and went to the girls' restroom. Sasha has to make sure to keep an eye on the door in case anyone gets in.
"Alright, let's hurry before school starts."
"Okay. Last night we had dinner with Mrs. Padilla with her family at my house. We had a great time until she talks about my mother. She said that I was separated from my brother before I was dropped off at the orphanage when I was a baby." said Marcy.
"Did she?" Anne gasp softly.
"Yes. She also said that she was planning to adopt me before my dad in case no one else would adopt me and I didn't take it very well. I just... yelled at her and ran off."
"Dude. I am so sorry." Anne apologizes softly.
"How bad was it?" Sasha asked softly.
"Not so much. I already apologize for what I just said. I didn't mean this to snap at." replied Marcy.
"It's alright, Mars. You were just upset." said Anne.
"I know how that feels." Sasha recalls.
"Thanks, girls. I guess we should be going." said Marcy.
They nodded before they left the restroom. Just in time before class starts by the time when the bell rang. They were in their classroom respectfully and took their seat before their teacher comes in.
Class starts when their teacher is talking, but Marcy was writing down her notes for her schoolwork. She pauses for a moment and started to think about her late mother. She dosed off for a moment before her teacher noticed when concerned about her student.
She asked Marcy that she's doing okay before the girl shook off her thoughts and nodded with an answer. Anne took a quick glance at her before turned back to reading the history book. She was worried about her best friend, but she knew that she's smart and she can handle it.
Few hours later, gym class starts after all students have change their outfit. Marcy knew that she's not really good at gym due lack of exercise. Nobody blames her when she used to get distracted by playing her game switch, but she made an agreement with her father to leave at home so that she can stay focus.
Right now, it's boys against girls where Marcy participates with Anne and Sasha along with other girls while the boys including Darrel, Ivan, Ethan, and KJ during volley ball practice. Marcy was trying her best to participate, but it's hard for to focus. Luckily for Anne and Sasha, they always defend her in case she gets injured.
"You got this, Marcy?" Anne asked.
"Oh yeah, I got this. Good thing that I have to leave my game switch at home, but it doesn't seem right." replied Marcy.
"It's probably the best that you should stay focus." Sasha suggested before she blocks the ball.
When Ivan hit the ball, Sasha blocked it again as she hit the ball to them. But then, when one of the boys accidentally hit pretty hard after jump high, the ball slam at Marcy on her forehead, causing her friends to stop while their coach whistles.
"Marcy!" Anne gasps.
"Time out! Everyone, take a break!" The coach hollers.
Most of her friends including Sasha rush to her to see if she's okay while the boy who hit pretty hard as he rushes to apologize.
"Marcy! Are you okay?" Anne asked.
"I am so sorry! Are you hurt?" asked One of her classmates.
"I'm okay, Derek. I'm fine." replied Marcy.
"I didn't mean it to take it this far."
"It's fine, dude. We'll take it from here." said Anne.
He nodded before he left to take a seat. Ethan step closer to she is doing okay.
"Marcy, are you hurt?" Ethan asked when concerned.
"I'm okay, guys. I'm fine." replied Marcy.
"Here. Let's take some seats for a moment." Darrel suggested.
They nodded before they escort Marcy to take their bench to sit down for a moment. They let Marcy sitting down at the bench while Darrel is checking on her forehead to see that she's injured, but she raises her hand to let them know that she's okay.
"Guys, I'm fine. Really."
"Marcy, you weren't focus. You should be more careful." said Anne.
"Yeah, girl. You were dozed off." Sasha added.
"Do you need some water?" KJ asked.
"Guys! Please! Can you give me a moment for once!" Marcy snaps.
They flinched when she snaps at. Marcy would never snap at her friends. They couldn't believe that she was just telling them to back off. She took a glance at some students that were staring her, but she doesn't want to get them attention. She exhaled sharply before she spoke.
"Sorry, guys. I just had a really rough night." Marcy apologizes.
"It's alright, Marcy. We understand." replied Ethan.
"We wanted to help you." KJ added.
"We're really sorry." Ivan apologizes.
"It's alright, guys. It's really complicated." said Marcy.
"You seem really happy from yesterday. Is something going on last night?" Darrel asked.
"She has a rough night and I couldn't tell why." Anne answered.
"How come?"
Before Marcy could reply, they heard their coach hollering.
"Alright, breaks over! Back to soft ball practice!"
"Alright, I'll explain everything during lunch, but you have to keep a secret." said Marcy.
"Agreed." replied Darrel.
They nodded and went back to their positions. Their coach approach to check on Marcy with his soft look.
"You okay, Marcy?"
She nodded.
"Alright, you should get rest. Just to be safe."
She nodded again before her coach left. Marcy was staring at her friends resuming their soft ball practice. It's a lot easy for her to get sit this one out despite the incident. She will tell four more friends of her since they're the ones that she could trust and she'll have to wait until lunch time.
Meanwhile in Saint James Middle School, Eddie's class has already passed and then he went to the cafeteria when it's lunchtime. He may have some old friends back from his home country, but he made some new friends from middle school that his sister introduce.
He's looking for a place to spot, but everyone else has already taken their spots. He took a glance and noticed that this spot is empty. It's perfect for him to sit at the table. He sat down, took out his lunch that he brought was his leftovers from the other night, and then start to eat his leftover noodles.
Then suddenly, Bailey approach and sat down next to him with her sandwich and her milk on her tray. He looked surprise a bit as she smiles softly at him. He doesn't mind for someone to sit next to him.
"Hey. Room for one more?" Bailey asked.
"Mmm hmm." Eddie nodded when his mouth is full.
She took a bite of her sandwich before Eddie speaks.
"How's it going?"
"I'm doing okay." Bailey answered after swallowing her sandwich. "How is she?"
"She's doing alright."
"Okay. I just want to make sure that she's doing okay."
"It's fine. She's feeling better, for now. I'm really sorry that I drag you into this." Eddie apologizes.
"It's okay. We didn't know what is going to happen. I should've known better for coming over to your house." replied Bailey.
"Hey, don't beat yourself up. None of us knew. I felt the same way, back when I was a bit upset after my grandparents told me that she was here all along."
"Really?"
"Yeah, they told me that my dad send me back with my grandparents to protect me. I know it is wrong for them, but what they told me that my parents are trying to protect me and my sister after being separated. I don't know why my family was torn apart." Eddie explained.
"Families can be rough. I used to have my parents, but my mother died of childbirth when I was a baby, and then my father got into car crash and passed away."
"What about your grandparents?" Eddie asked.
"I never met my grandparents. They died of heartbroken, but they ascended into heaven. I ended up being an orphan for at least eight years until I was adopted. I was stayed behind to look after some kids to help out my adopted mom. I'm the only girl who always looking after to one another since Marcy. She's the only family that ever I have."
Eddie reaches his hand to her hand. She looked at her hand being touched by Eddie. She looked at him with gentle expression. Eddie smiles at her softly a bit. She started blush a bit, but she has no idea how it all started.
"Looks like you and I are in common, huh?" said Eddie.
"Yeah. Me too." replied Bailey.
He was staring at her for a minute until he realizes that she was blushing. He looked at his hand, but quickly react that he removed his hand from her by releasing. He chuckled a bit like he was embarrassed. Bailey giggles a bit.
"I... I don't know what came over me."
"Me neither. So, shall we?" Bailey asked.
"Yeah, let's finish up our meal."
They resume their eating before lunch break is over. He doesn't know why he laid his hand on, but it looks like that both he and Bailey are in same common. Talked about their late parents, their life, and their feelings.
Back to middle school where all students are having their lunch. Marcy is sitting at the table with her friends when she talks about from the other night. She explains everything to the boys while both Anne and Sasha are the only ones that they've been told before class starts.
Darrel, Ivan, Ethan, and KJ were all shocked that Marcy's mother has dropped her daughter to the orphanage for protection. She also said that it was to prevent from something or someone that's been after her family. They have no idea what to say.
"And that's when my brother was here to see me after eight years of being separate." Marcy finished up her story.
"Oh, my gosh. I am so sorry." Ethan apologizes softly.
"I have no idea what have happened." KJ added.
"It's alright. I was pretty upset at first, but I've already forgive Mrs. Padilla. She's the only person that I could ever stood up with."
"I know how that feels. I know what's like when my mom is not feeling well. The doctors are doing their best to keep my mom healthy, but I'm starting to get worried about her." said Darrel.
"Hey, it's gonna be okay, Darrel." said Sasha softly.
She laid her hand on Darrel before he smiles a bit at her.
"Is there anything we can do?" Ivan asked.
"I don't know. I wish there could be a way is to solve this." replied Marcy.
"I'll tell you what, Mars. Starting today, you got a lot of things to do. The game expo is coming in three days and I will not let my best friend down with all moping and depressing. You are the best talented girl that I ever met!" said Anne when lighting up.
"Do you think so?" Marcy asked.
"Darn right, that is. What do you say, partner? Are you in?"
Marcy started to think if it's a good time to stay focus before she started to smile once again.
"You're right. I'll go!" said Marcy.
"That's the spirit!"
"I'm gonna show the world what I can do and I will not fail!"
"You go, girl!" Sasha chimes.
"Aw, yeah!" KJ cheers.
"THAT'S MY GIRL!" Ethan cheers.
They went stunned as they move their eyes at Ethan who went froze like a deer.
"(ahem) I mean, go get em'.
Few hours later, schools out when all student comes out. But Marcy, on the other hand just ran out from school as she went straight towards to her brother who was sitting in a truck waiting that he's been waiting for her.
She opens the door and got inside before closing it. Eddie was surprised of all sudden when she's a lot better now. Marcy buckled herself in and looked at him smiling.
"Hi, Eddie!" Marcy chimes.
"Marcy? You feeling okay?" Eddie asked when surprised.
"Better than ever!"
"Okay? I'm glad that you're feeling better, but what's with all that smile?"
"I have a game to play that's been coming up. And I know where to start."
Eddie bring his smile to her warmly.
"Then what are we waiting for."
