A/n: I was listening to "I'll Be" by Edwin McCain. Beautiful song. I was inspired. Enjoy.

Lily Evans had spent two hours getting ready for the Graduation Ball. She was wearing a long, green, strapless gown that had a slight train in the back and black three-inch heels. Her flaming red hair was up in a tidy bun with two ringlets hanging down the sides of her face. She had on subtle makeup but wore light green eye-shadow, bringing out her emerald green eyes.

She walked through the doors of the Great Hall and everyone turned around to look at her. She didn't notice a certain seventeen year old boy look at her lovingly. She walked forward and sat down with her best friend, Marie.

They played the first slow song and Marie went off with her boyfriend, Sirius. Lily sat there, looking after Marie, smiling for her friend. But, she couldn't help but feel sad that she didn't have anyone to share this night with.

She admired the beautiful decorations. The usual House tables had been removed and in their places were round tables that seated four people. The House banners were hanging proudly from the ceiling, which reflected the sky outside; black, sprinkled with silver stars and the pale moon. Candles hung, enchanted, in mid-air, casting an eerie but beautiful glow around the Hall.

She sat at that table for most of the night, looking at the other couples dancing. She didn't notice one seventeen year old boy not dancing. She didn't notice him looking at her adoringly.

She looked across the dance floor, looking for one boy. He wasn't there. She couldn't help but wonder if he was truly over her. She couldn't stop thinking about him. That year had truly been different. It had been the best year ever.

By midnight, she couldn't help but hope he was looking for her too. The last slow song came on. It was I'll Be by Edwin McCain. It was a muggle song and one of Lily's favorites.

She felt a tap on her bare shoulder and turned around to see James Potter, handsome seventeen year old, messy jet-black hair, hazel eyes looking at her behind his black wire-rimmed glasses.

"May I have this dance?" He asked sweetly.

Lily smiled. "Yes, you may."

James grinned as Lily took his hand and he led her to the dance floor. He placed his hands on her waist as she wrapped her arms around his neck. Their faces were inches apart.

They swayed gently to the music, in time with each other.

"Thank you for the last dance, Lily." James whispered.

"You're welcome, James." Lily replied, smiling.

Her emerald eyes were bright with happiness and James's hazel eyes, behind his glasses, showed his joy.

They didn't talk while they were dancing. They didn't have to. Everything was left unspoken, as if in silent agreement.

James brought lily closer to him and she rested her head on his shoulder. It fit perfectly. Just like his hand son her waist, her arms around his neck, felt perfect.

The moment was perfect. The music, the dance, the emotion, the looks, the way they danced, how close they were was so perfect.

Sirius and Marie stopped dancing, as did everyone else, to look at the couple they never thought they'd see. James Potter holding, dancing with Lily Evans. Both enjoying it. The boy that had been after the girl for seven years. The couple that everyone knew but never expected. The couple everyone hoped for. The couple that was destined to be.

The music began coming to an end and Lily and James began to slow down. They looked into each other's eyes, looks of love passing between them.

Then, without noticing or caring that the whole of their graduating class was watching, they kissed, making the moment ever more perfect.
