Chapter 5

Anna sighed, satisfied from her and Mary's lovemaking. Ever since she found out she was pregnant, it seemed Mary couldn't keep her hands off her. Now, that her belly was starting to grow, Mary only seemed to want to touch her more.

"I can't believe we've made it to fifteen weeks," Mary said in Anna's ear. She brought her hand up and over Anna's swollen belly. "Soon we'll know that we're having a boy."

"Or a girl."

"Or a girl." Mary smiled, kissing the spot just below Anna's ear. "God I can't get enough of you." She kissed Anna, pulling her up over her. "I love you, so much. Thank you for having our child."

"I love going through this journey with you."

Their lips met, once more, and Anna ran her fingers through Mary's bob, twirling at the ends. Mary's hand moved down Anna's bare back, when a knock on the door and a clearing of a throat made them break away from one another.

"Yes?" Mary called out.

"Sorry, m'lady, but you have a visitor."

"All right, Carson thank you." Mary sat up in the bed, grabbing her robe from the chair next to her. She then walked over to her dresser, in search of something to wear. "Who is even over here at ten in the morning on a Saturday?"

"I don't know," Anna said, watching her. She brought the covers up over her naked figure. "But whoever it is, you better hurry back. I won't stay like this for long."

Mary made a low, disappointed sound. "Please do. We have no plans today, darling. Just stay, just like that until I get back."

Anna grinned. "If that's what you want."

"I do. I really do."

After Mary got dressed, she kissed Anna's forehead before leaving the room. Anna rolled onto her back, placing her hands on her growing stomach. She wondered when she would start feeling the baby's movements. Sometimes she thought she could feel some sort of moving in there, but she could never be sure.

"Don't worry little one, your mama is going to love you if you're a girl or a boy. She just has this competition with her sister, your Aunt Edith, over who will have the first boy. It's an unspoken competition, but it's there. But the moment you're here, either way, she won't care about that silly competition anymore."

Mary came downstairs to find Matthew waiting in the study for her. He was facing away from her, staring out the window at the light rain hitting the glass.

"Well this is a surprise," Mary said, closing the door behind her. "Is everything all right?"
Matthew turned. He held an envelope in his hands.

"What's this?"

"It's the paperwork about the estate limits we talked about a while back where you asked me to look it all."

"Oh, right," Mary said. She took the envelope. "Did you discover anything interesting?"

"Yes, actually. There's a small plot of land on the northeast of the estate that is owned by Downton that wasn't marked on this paperwork."

"Really?" Mary asked. She opened the folder he'd given her and pulled out the map. Matthew walked up beside her and pointed to the small area where he had drawn a blue square over the plot of land. "Interesting. Does anyone think they own it?"

"No," Matthew answered.

"Well, that's good and less stressful. You'll have to tell Papa. He will be delighted. Thank you for bringing this by."

"And how are you? Anna?" Matthew asked. At that, Mary couldn't help but smile. Just thinking about her pregnant wife made her happy.

"We're great. Truly great. We should have a baby in the spring."

"Wonderful. Lavinia and I have just gotten our positive test," Matthew told her, quietly. "Don't tell anyone, yet."

"Oh, how marvelous, Matthew! Our children will be close in age. And don't worry, I won't tell anyone."

She bid Matthew goodbye and placed the paperwork on her desk. As she walked out of her study, she was met with Carson holding a tray of tea, biscuits, and a slice of cheesecake.

"Lady Mary, I thought you and Mrs. Anna might need something to eat. You haven't been downstairs all morning."

"Thank you, Carson. I'll take this up to Anna right now."

She took the tray from Carson and went up the stairs. When she reached the bedroom, she saw Anna still lying in bed. Upon seeing Mary, Anna sat up slightly, she grinned when she saw the food.

"Oh good, I'm starved."

Mary sat the tray on the bed and climbed in next to her wife.

"Do eat up, darling. You're eating for two."

Anna grabbed the plate of cheesecake first, taking several bites. It seemed her cravings for the sweet grew more and more each day. Mary picked up a biscuit. She ate it before starting on her tea.

"You're still undressed," Mary said, pulling down the covers off her wife.

"You asked me to stay this way."

"I did. What should I do about it?"

"I don't know," Anna said, raising her brows playfully. "You tell me."

"You've only picked up all blue things," Anna pointed out, as they walked down the aisle of baby clothes. "I thought we were going with gender neutral outfit choices."

"Who says a girl can't wear blue?" Mary countered. Anna took one of the bibs Mary held and turned it around for Mary to see it.

"It says 'Mommy's Little Prince' on it," Anna said. "Also, I thought you hated baby clothing with words on it."

"I do, but this is a bib, not an outfit."

Anna chuckled, placing the bib back into Mary's hand. She walked over to the display of stuffed animals. She reached out and grabbed a small, little white lamb.

"Is white a good idea with a baby?" Mary asked, coming up behind her. "Don't they drool and spit up often?"

"But it's adorable," Anna said. She hugged the small stuffed toy to her chest. Anna felt an undistinguishable kick against her belly. A laugh left her lips.

"What?"

Instead of saying anything, Anna grabbed Mary's hand and placed it on her belly. Another kick came, but it wasn't as strong. Anna glanced to Mary.

"Did you feel that?"

"Feel what, darling?"

"The baby." Anna adjusted Mary's hand, but there came no more kicks.

"You felt him kick?"

"I did," Anna said. She sighed. "Hopefully you'll feel it next time."

Mary kept her hand on Anna's stomach and gave it a rub.

"It is still early. It may be a while before our little one here is strong enough for me to feel him. I will feel him in time." She kissed Anna's cheek. "Get the lamb. Our child must love it and was letting you know. Is there anything else you want to get? The bassinets are over that way."

"I think the few outfits and lamb are good for today. Once we know what we're having, we can do some more shopping and decide a theme for the nursery." Anna kept the lamb close to her chest.

"All right."

They headed to the register to purchase the few items and then went to lunch together. Anna always enjoyed these special days they had with one another where they didn't have to worry about work or the estate. They tried to put aside one day a week that was just for them. Anna couldn't wait until it included their new little one.

That night they ate by the fire in the living room and watched a movie. Mary had sent Carson home early, so they could lounge in just their robes with one another. Anna finished her meal and curled up next to Mary, who brought her arm around her shoulder. She kissed the top of Anna's head.

"What do you think about James?" Mary asked, as Anna glanced up at her.

"James?"

"Yes, for a boy."

"Like my father?"

Mary smiled. "Yes, darling. I know you loved him, so."

"I did," Anna said with a sigh. Her father had died when she was a young girl, which led to her world being turned upside down. "You'd really be okay with naming our child after my father?"

"Of course, I would. And it's a nice strong name."

"I agree," Anna said. She kissed her wife. "What if it's a girl?"

"I don't know. Do you have a name you like?"

Anna chewed on the side of her lip. "I do. Zoey."

Mary curled up her nose. "Zoey? Where on earth did you get that name?"

"In a baby name book. I thought it was pretty."

"I mean, it's a nice name. But what about something older like Charlotte or Caroline?"

"Those are nice too, but I really like Zoey," Anna said.

"I guess it doesn't matter, we both like James, and our baby is going to be a boy." Mary nuzzled her nose against Anna's cheek. Her lips caressed along her jaw.

"But what if it is a girl?" Anna asked, finding it hard to remain focused as Mary's lips moved their way down her neck. She allowed the conversation to fade when her wife's hands undid her robe and slid it off her shoulders.

"I cannot get enough of you," Mary said.

Anna rested back against the cushions of the sofa, bringing her arms around Mary's neck to draw her closer. Mary brought her lips to Anna's, and they kissed deeply. Anna was about to begin tugging on the tie of Mary's robe when she felt a sharp pain in her abdomen.

"Ow," Anna said. She winced. Mary sat back quickly.

"Did I do something?"

Anna shook her head, as Mary climbed off the sofa. Anna sat up, placing her hand over her stomach, right as another sharp pain hit her. This one lasted longer, making her hand clasp tightly against the cushion.

"Anna?"

"Something's wrong with the baby," Anna said. "I just…" The pain came again. She bent forward.

"Now don't panic. Are you in a lot of pain?"

"Yes," Anna said between pants. "Oh I'm losing our baby, Mary!" Hot tears began to flow down her cheeks.

"We don't know that, darling. Right, we'll get to the hospital right away. Don't panic," she said once again.

"The baby." Anna pressed her hand against her stomach, hoping she'd feel a kick again.

"Shh, come on, let's go."

To be continued...
