Volume 1: The Pecking Order

Chapter Two

"Vijar, is it?"Momonga asked.

After swearing allegiance, the now named Vijar introduced himself as the leader of the Zoastia, one of the many demihuman tribes in the area. He also explained to Momonga where they were currently, the Abelion Hills.

"Yes my lord. What do you require of me and my tribe?" Vijar answered Momonga in a submissive tone.

"Tell about these 'Abelion Hills'"

Vijar then proceeded to explain about the other tribes and notable people present in the Abelion Hills. The species present in the Abelion Hills were the Snakemen, the Armat, the Zerns, the Bladers, the Centaurs, the Caben, the Horuners, the Spidan, the Stone Eaters, the ape like demihumans present, the Pteropus, the Orthrous, the Magelos, the Bafolk, the Spriggans, the Naga Raja, the Vah Uns, the Puri Uns, the Zoastia, Vijar's own tribe. Additionally, there were the Srush, although they were now very few in number after an attack on a 'Holy Kingdom', the Giant Biclops, the Weremen, the Pandex, the Orcs, the Hill Giants, the Goblins, and the underground dwelling Dark Dwarves.

Vijar then continued by informing Momonga about the notable demihumans of the hills. He spoke first about Rokesh, leader of the Naga Raja, and the holder of the title 'Rainbow Scales'. Secondly, he spoke of his own subordinate, Muar Praxua of the Zoastia, and wielder of the title 'Black Steel' for his fearsome assassination techniques which were a rarity among the Zoastia. The third notable leader was Nasrene Belt Cure, the female tribal leader of the Magelos and the holder of the title 'Iceflame Thunder' because of her powerful magic. The fourth notable demihuman was Hectowaizes Ah Ragara. Hectowaizes is the tribal leader of the Orthrous and the holder of the title 'Spiral Lance'. Unlike the other notable demihumans, Hectowaizes isn't famous for his personal power, rather, he is famous for his superb skills as a general. The fifth notable demihuman was Halisha Ankara, leader of the Stone Eaters and wielder of the title 'White Elder', however he is now dead. The next two Vijar didn't know much about, all he did know was their titles. The 'Beast Emperor' and the 'Ashen King'. The final notable demihuman Vijar mentioned was Buser, 'The Grand King of Destruction'. Buser is leader of the Bafolk and is said to be one of, if not the strongest demihuman. Vijar also mentioned that he is famous for his weapon-breaking martial arts.

"I wonder what kind of magic is used in this world? Is it the same as YGGDRASIL, or is it something different? Also, what are these martial arts? Some kind of warrior skills? Wait! Is that what that Hali guy used against me? Maybe. I'll have to look out for stronger abilities. Also, I'll have to be wary about meeting some of these demihumans Vijar mentioned, they could be the equivalent of level 100s maybe even stronger for all I know. Sigh. There's still so much I don't know. I'll have to gather information to protect myself in the future." Momonga halted his internal thoughts to ask a question. "Vijar. Tell me more about these 'martial arts', and, while we're at it, tell me about which one you can use."

"Of course my lord." After giving his confirmation, Viajar then proceeded to explain all he knew about martial arts to his liege.

"Physical, mental, and weapon enhancements, the possibilities seem endless! These could be really dangerous. I must know more!...Unfortunately that'll have to take a back seat for a little while. Before I get back to it I need to know about the world outside of these 'Abelion Hills'." Momonga ceased his internal musings to ask a new question. "Tell me, do you know of anything outside of the Abelion Hills?"

"Yes my lord, there are three human nations that surround the Abelion Hills. Would you like me to explain what I know about them to you?" After Momonga gave a nod as an affirmative Vijar proceeded to speak out what he knew about the Restize Kingdom, the Roble Holy Kingdom, and the Slane Theocracy.

"Humans, huh. I feel as if I should go there, after all, I once was just an average human. However, I have a sneaky suspicion that they might not take too kindly to my undead form. I guess I really lucked out didn't I? I mean I'm in the one place where as long as I'm strong enough, they don't really care about my race. Right? Actually, is that true?" Momonga then proceeded to ask a question that was on his mind. "Tell me Vijar, do you know what I am?"

Vijar then responded. "You are undead my lord, although clearly not one of the lowly mindless ones. Are you perhaps a legendary Elder Lich, or could you be one of the mystical Night Liches?" He finished his question in what Momonga picked up on as a curious tone.

"Puwaahhh! Legendary. Elder lich. Is he joking?! Momonga took another look at Vijar and confirmed that no, he was not joking. "Are Elder Liches considered Legendary undead here? They're basically trash! Ugh, I'll think about any possible implications of that later." Momonga then scraped his brain, looking for an appropriate response. "...Umu, you're not that far off. However, I have to ask, do you care that I'm undead at all?"

Vijar responded concisely. "My lord, you are undead yes, but you are obviously an intelligent being. So, if you were going to kill me, I have a feeling you would have done so already. Besides, you are strong, stronger than I, and thus, I shall follow you my lord." After finishing his speech Vijar kneeled and lowered his head yet again.

"Uwahh...how doI respond to that. Also, can you stop calling me Lord? It's getting annoying. Plus, I'm just a salaryman! Is this how managers and CEOs feel? Uwahh, must be rough...Focus!" Momonga internally slapped himself. He took a few seconds to formulate a response. Finally he decided on a course of action that was heavily influenced by what he thought a CEO or other leader would say. "Raise your head Vijar. I accept you into my service. Come, lead me toward your settlement. Also, have the Stone Eaters follow us there. They are my subordinates as well." "Nailed it! I think so at least. I hope I didn't look like a doofus!"

While Momonga was speaking internally with himself he stood up. As he stood up the [Throne of Kings] disappeared. However Momonga felt it go inside an inventory of sorts. "Heh, well it's nice to know that still works too. I really lucked out on that. Imagine if I had to lug it around wherever I went."

As Momonga was praising Lady Luck internally, Vijar stood as well. Nervously, he asked a question. "My lord. I hope I'm not being rude when I ask this, but what is your mighty name?"

"My name...huh." Momonga stopped to think for a minute. " What should I go by? I could go by Suzuki Satoru. No, definitely no. What about my avatar's name, Momonga? That's acceptable. How about I take the name of the guild? Yes! That's great! If any of my comrades are hear then they should definitely recognize the name. Wait. If they could be here then there's a chance that other players are here too. Ainz Ooal Gown wasn't well liked among non-heteromorphic that players, so there's a chance of them being hostile....Screw it! I'll face a hundred Level 100 players if it means I can see even one of my comrades again!"

After weighing the pros and cons Momonga came to a decision. He then spoke once more to Vijar. "Listen well Vijar, for I am know as...Ainz Ooal Gown! However, for simplicity's sake, you may call me Ainz. Now then, let us go." After he finished speaking, Ainz started walking toward the hill that the Zoastia were still arrayed on. As he did so he put the [Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown] into his inventory.

Vijar thanked his ancestors, the stars, even gods that he didn't believe in. After all, this unfathomable being decided to spare his life. Now, he was still a little miffed about losing the chance to prove himself, but at least he lived to fight another day!

Besides, he knew that this 'Ainz Ooal Gown' was much more powerful than him. It would be suicide to go against him. After all, Halisha was killed in only one spell! Halisha hadn't been weak either, no, he was one of the strongest in the hills! For him to have been killed so easily...it's unprecedented. Truly Ainz Ooal Gown is among the truly powerful. Obviously, he will go on to do great deeds that will be sung about for centuries, maybe even forever.

Just then Vijar stopped walking before he resumed walking, only this time with a truly sinister grin on his face.

"Of course! Hehehehe. Ainz Ooal Gown will be remembered for a millennia, but so will those that served him, at least those most powerful. I must prove myself! Hehehehe. My thanks my lord. My thanks for spreading my legend across the land. Hehehehe. Long may you reign my lord. Long live Ainz Ooal Gown! Hehehehe."

As he continued walking Vijar's sinister grin only grew larger and larger as he thought about how his legend would spread under his lord's own.

"Uwahhh...w-why is he smiling at me like that? Is he planning to kill me? No, he wouldn't, right?Uwahhh...scary Vijar. Very scary."
