Chapter 1
Daylight began to peak out from behind the mountains, embracing the land and all of those left in slumber, in its warm honey glow. The many creatures of the wilderness started to stir and awaken, in their snug, warm dwellings. An almost eerily calm was felt across feudal japan the past couple of days. With the jewel finally being destroyed, Naraku dead, the constant fear of worry was gone. It should have felt euphoric, but all that remained was sadness.
Unable to sleep, Kagome laid on the forest floor just watching the sun rise, one last time. After she failed to save Kikyo, Inuyasha left days ago and hasn't come back. She understood why but understanding didn't stop the pain she felt. Kagome was full of regret, not being able to help but also heartbroken. Laying there thinking about how she constantly made a fool of herself, chasing after someone who loved another.
All of the times she was told to leave and not come back. When she'd watch Inuyasha running off the moment he caught Kikyo's scent even though he assured her that he was no longer in love with Kikyo and didn't want anything to do with her. The moments he chose to save Kikyo over her. Kagome, wiping the tears from her face, realized how big of a fool-… no, a child she had been. No matter what, she was and always will be number two.
Come to think about it, she was just his jewel shard detector. She knew she couldn't blame anyone but herself. Kikyo had been the first human in life to take the time to understand him. Properly introduced him to humans and a better life. She was his first love. He was going to give up his demon half to become human and live with her and create a family. She showed him the true meaning of love. Inuyasha had held Kikyo so tenderly, more so than anything he had ever touched in his life. His love uncontrollably streamed down his face, pained. The goodbye kiss, so willing and full of passion.
Kagome couldn't stop reliving the memory in her head as if it were a song stuck on repeat. The emotions radiating from Inuyasha, everyone could feel them. It felt like he was dying on the inside. Inuyashas love for her wasn't true love, or so she thought. Who was she kidding, she technically wasn't even supposed to be there. She belongs 500 years in the future. Not the feudal era. Maybe if she never fell into the past, then Inuyasha would be living happy with Kikyo. Maybe Kikyo died because of her.
Sango, Miroku and Shippo haven't spoken much since that night or maybe it was her that hasn't spoken, she couldn't remember. The only thing that was clear was she needed to go home. There was no need to wake the others, only to have them even more upset by saying goodbye. Everyone's plans after the journey was over was to go back to their everyday lives anyways. Kagome was graduating high school and had her family and future to think about.
Kagome stifled a sob underneath her breath. Her face was soaked and she didn't realize she felt a large round pressure in her chest making it difficult to breath. As quickly and quietly as possible, she gathered up her belongings not waking the others from their deep slumber. Never would she be able to be Kikyo. She didn't want to be, the problem was that she wanted to be loved for being herself. Not for sharing the soul of someone's true love.
She turned to take one more look at them. One more look at these strangers that fought against all odds and quickly became her family. Never would she let herself forget their faces or their smiles. She would continue to love them for eternity and hope that she could meet them again someday in the afterlife. Inuyasha had not returned yet so she figured that was the last anyone would hear of him. That he wasn't coming back. She couldn't say she was surprised, as impulsive as he was.
As upset as she was, she couldn't help but remember every time he pulled her against him, the strong, wild yet woodsy scent he gave off. He was always warm to the touch, warmer than a normal human. He made sure to lay firmly against her to keep her warm anytime she was cold at night. Every time he kissed her, how soft his lips were and how sweet he tasted. He kissed so well, for someone so rude and easily embarrassed. Kagome caught herself biting on her lip, reminiscing and these weird sensations beginning to radiate in her gut and even lower. Shaking her head to snap herself back to reality, She headed into the forest.
The bone eaters well wasn't far. Just a village over from where they camped last night. After the past three years, she was confident she could go nearly anywhere without a body guard. Since learning her powers, she was a force to be reckoned with. As emotional as she was, Whatever demon crossed her path would quickly regret it. Lost in thought as she walked farther and farther away, she questioned everything.
