The sky is dark and stifling and even the air seems heavier, stinging Pippin's lungs with ash as he inhales. Horrendous creatures gnash and snarl before him, and Pippin can hardly remember the Shire when he sees the ominous army before him glower over the battlefield.

And as much as he misses Merry, Pippin thinks it would be selfish to wish his cousin were beside him, sharing in whatever horrible fate awaited. There was no hope here, and Pippin wonders if there ever was. Even the hope of a fool seems ridiculous, standing before the black minions of Mordor.
