~Everything's Not What It Seems~

Alex and Justin are siblings sent to Hogwarts to learn about magic just like their father. There they meet new friends, fall in love, and find out that truly everything is not what it seems.

Alex sat between Justin and Hermione, holding her hands over her ears as they kept blabbering on about how Alex should take care of her leg. There weren't even any utensils out yet for her to use as a weapon to threaten them with. Damn her luck. She looked across from her to where Harry was watching her sympathetically. Why couldn't they understand she was annoyed the way he did? Alex was surprised when the pair finally went silent and she turned to Justin to see his attention had shifted towards the front of the Great Hall. Alex followed his gaze to the podium, where Professor Dumbledore stood, staring at the crowd of students.

"Welcome students, to another year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I also especially would like to welcome our new students, may you be very welcome in our school and in your new house which will now be your home. Before I forget, I would like to introduce the newest addition to our table of professors, Professor Moody."

Dumbledore pointed towards a door in the corner behind him where a large man hobbled from. Alex wasn't very close, but even from where she sat, she could see the scars on the man's face. He had one eye that was larger than the other and seemed to be attached to his face with a patch. The Great Hall broke into whispers as the man joined the other professors at the table. Alex couldn't help but wrinkle her nose as she looked at his tattered, shaggy attire. Who would hire this guy? When she looked back at his face, she gasped as her eyes met his, a demeaning look on his face. She quickly looked away, averting her eyes to the table in front of her

"You okay?" She felt a hand on her shoulder as Justin leaned closer to her to whisper in her ear.

"I'm fine, it's nothing." She shook her head quickly in dismissal looking back at Professor Dumbledore. As the headmaster continued to speak, Alex couldn't help thinking about the new professor. There was something off about him...

~~~~~
Though Justin could tell Alex was unsettled by the new professor, she didn't press her further. Something didn't seem right about this wizard, he just couldn't put his finger on it. He didn't like the way he looked at them.
Justin shook out of his thoughts as the headmaster proceeded to clap his hands together to get the attention of the Great Hall. The students began to go quiet as Professor Dumbledore scanned the room.
"Now that that's been settled, I'd like to tell you all that this year you all will be sharing your school. This year we will be joined by two other wizarding schools because Hogwarts will be hosting the Triwizard Tournament."
Justin heard the excited whispers around them. He looked at Harry questioningly but he only shrugged in response, seemingly as unfamiliar with the announcement as he was.
"For those of you who are unfamiliar with this tournament, it is a tournament between three schools where a single wizard is chosen from each school to compete in a number of challenges. When chosen you stand alone so I warn you, this tournament is not for the weak-hearted."
That sounded dangerous...
"Now I'd like to introduce the second school that will be competing, the beautiful ladies of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and their Headmaster, Olympe Maxine!"
The doors swung open as Professor Dumbledore finished his introduction. The students all turned their attention towards the Great Hall entrance as a file of beautiful girls in blue robes and blue hats pranced into the Great Hall. The girls all danced to the front of the room as an extremely tall, brown-haired woman with a bob followed in after them. Justin rolled his eyes as a few of the guys around him whistled and a few of the girls gasped. As the woman approached the podium at the front, Professor Dumbledore extended his hand towards her to lead the woman to the Professor's table.
After helping her sit down, Professor Dumbledore returned to the podium and looked around the Great Hall expectantly. The students around him began to quiet down again as the headmaster's eyes passed over them.
"And our third school, please welcome the Durmstrang Institute for Magical Learning and their headmaster Igor Karkaroff!"
Justin looked back towards the doors as they swung open again and a line of built guys marched into the Great Hall, staffs in hand. They swung the staffs around as they marched to the front. Justin watched on in awe as a few of them showed off with some flips and fire-breathing tricks. Justin heard Ron gasp when the last three entered the hall. He recognized two of them from the Quidditch World Cup, while the third was a black haired bearded man in a white coat and fur hat. The man kept his eyes straight ahead as he marched towards their headmaster.
"Blimey it's him, Victor Krum!" Ron yelped.
"And Adam Good! So the rumors that he'd be doing another year at Durmstrang are true." Fred said.
"Guess we'll have to wait another year to have another celebrity at Hogwarts." George shrugged at his brother.
Justin looked at his sister who seemed to have her attention on the second quidditch player. "That was the guy who kept staring at me during the World Cup, isn't it?" She looked at her brother. Justin nodded. "This will be interesting."
Durmstrang ended their entrance with the fire-breathing student breathing flames in the shape of a phoenix. Applaud burst around them as the Durmstrang's headmaster pulled Professor Dumbledore into a hug. After they pulled away, they both took their seats at the Professor table and Professor Dumbledore waved his wand for all the food to appear on the table.
Justin turned his attention to the food before them just as a loud gushing noise came from the doorway of the Great Hall. The room went silent as everyone attention turned towards the entrance. It was silent for a moment as struggling could be heard on the other side of the doors. Suddenly the doors swung open and a blob of slime and feather appeared at the door."
"Blimey! What is that?" Ron whispered.
"Isn't that-"
"That's Filch." Hermione said matter-of-factly.
The room bursts into a fit of laughter as Filch stepped forward, shooting menacing glares across the room. Justin tried to hold back his own laughter but couldn't help it as the laughter around him got louder. Beside him, Alex was practically doubled over laughing.
"You did this, didn't you?" Justin asked his sister as a laugh escaped his lips.
"We did this!" Fred and George said together as they reached across the table to high-five Alex.
"We wanted to start the school year with a bang, so… bang!" Alex giggled as she clapped Ron's now-extended hand.
"Charming." Hermione rolled her eyes, not even a touch of humor on her face.
"Come on 'Mione, even you have to admit this was brilliant." Harry said to her as he looked admirably at Alex.
"They are going to get into so much trouble for this!"
Justin nodded, agreeing with Hermione. His thought exactly. Justin was positive that his sister wanted to get in trouble to test her limits as the headmaster's niece. Justin looked at his sister, who seemed to have noticed his moment of realization. She smirked at him and shrugged as she began to load food onto her plate. He would need to have a discussion with her about this later... maybe even with their dad.
Justin looked back at the entrance to the Great Hall to see Filch no longer there, only a trail of slime and feathers remaining as proof of the prank. Did she at least use stain-resistant slime? Justin shook his head, realizing the ridiculousness of his thoughts. Of course not, Alex would make sure it stained.
"Students, let's begin our dinner!" The headmaster called out from the front of the room. Justin looked at Professor Dumbledore to see that the prank barely fazed him as he began to pile food onto his plate.
"What do you think this Tri-Wizard Tournament thing entails? I like the idea of winning such a big show." Alex asked as she placed three pumpkins cupcakes on her plate.
Justin picked up two of the cupcakes and placed one on his own plate and the other on Ron's. Alex frowned at him as he began placing vegetables from the salad platter on her plate. "Don't even think about it. You just hurt your leg Alex!"
"I can get it fixed in time for the tournament!" Alex complained.
"No. You're not getting involved in something that dangerous on my watch! You heard the headmaster, it's not for the weak-hearted." He stopped loading her plate and moved on to his own plate. Alex took a carrot from her plate and started to chew on it with a disgusted look on her face.
"You're no fun Justin. I bet you don't even want to take part in it, right?" Alex rolled her eyes at him. Justin ignored her question and turned to Ron and Harry.
"I know for sure that my brothers don't give a rat's ars if I enter the tournament!" Ron said with a victorious, mouth-filled grin.
Alex looked at him with disgust before turning towards Harry. "What about you Harry? Does the famous Harry Potter want to take part in the Tri-Wizard Tournament?"
"No, I don't. I don't care what the prize is, I will watch but I don't intend to take part in it." Harry replied to Alex in disinterest. Harry probably feared the worst like he did. Justin didn't think their father would want any of them competing anyway. Good for him.
Justin was relieved that the discussion from the tournament ended shortly after that. The conversation was replaced by exchanges of stories of their summer. Ron was fascinated as Justin recalled stories of his muggle best friend Zeke while Hermione and Harry watched Ron's reactions in amusement. Alex jumped between talking to them and talking to Fred, George and Lee.
Time passed as they all conversed and ate. Before they knew it, their meals were eaten and the tables were no longer covered with mountains of food. The students all turned their attention to the front of the Great Hall where Professor Dumbledore stood with a man Justin recognized from a recent issue of the Daily Prophet, Bartemius Crouch Senior. A large golden statue that was not there previously stood between them.
"Eternal glory is the one phrase that will describe the life of the winner of this tournament. But in order to achieve the eternal glory, the participants of this tournament must participate in three extremely difficult and dangerous tasks. Tasks that will challenge these students to the greatest extent." The headmaster paused, walking forwards slowly.
"But eternal glory, like everything else, comes at a price, and the price is putting your life on the line in these series of challenges. Due to this, the Ministry of Magic has put up a new rule, a rule which will be in place starting this tournament. To explain all this, I have invited the head of the Department of Magical Cooperation, Bartemius Crouch here." Professor Dumbledore took a step back as Mr. Crouch stepped forward to address the students.
"Due to the serious dangers of this tournament, the Ministry has decided to enforce a new rule that prohibits any student under the age of seventeen from putting forth their name for the Tri-Wizard tournament." Immediately the hall went into frenzy as people began to yell out in protest.
"This is rubbish!" Fred and George screamed together.
"Looks like you two won't be able to enter." Alex shook her head. Justin stared at his sister, noticing the slight relief on her face.
"Not if we have anything to do about it." Fred smirked, giving Alex a wink before high-fiving his twin.
"There is a reason this rule was placed. So none of us can enter! We are too young to handle the dangers of this challenge. The ministry knows best."
Fred and George both rolled their eyes at him before looking at Alex in disbelief. She shrugged. "This is how he always talks, don't be surprised."
Alex turned to him, lowering her voice. "Dad totally doesn't believe that about the ministry and neither do I!"
"He may not agree with the ministry, but I know he agrees that this tournament is too dangerous." Justin whispered back.
"I don't disagree with the dangers." Alex said quietly before turning her attention back to the front.
Justin opened his mouth to respond to his sister but was cut off by the headmaster.
"Silence!"
The hall immediately went quiet as all heads turned back to Professor Dumbledore. He pulled out his wand and lightly flicked it towards the statue beside him. The statue began to dissolve and in its place appeared a large wooden goblet on a pedestal. As the golden statue completed dispersed, a blue flame appeared at the mouth of the goblet. The hall broke into whispers.
"Anyone who wishes to take part in this tournament and win eternal glory will enter their name on a piece of parchment by this time Thursday night. Think wisely on entering because once your name is in the goblet, there is no turning back. As of now, the Tri-Wizard Tournament has begun."
