Where the hell was he?

Alex walked down another empty hallway, her impatience growing as she turned yet another corner. Alex had woken up early that morning to meet up with Cedric, as they did most mornings the previous year. It was the closest they had to a date at the school so despite having to lose an extra hour of sleep, she enjoyed this time. Alex had made it there earlier than normal in the hopes of spending more time with her boyfriend. Cedric was always early, no matter how early she showed up, he would be their. Unfortunately for her, this time she was surprised to find that her boyfriend was not waiting for her and that she would spend the next thirty minutes of her morning pacing around the hallways that surrounded the courtyard. As time passed, her impatience began to morph into annoyance, especially as her leg started to irritate her from the constant pacing.

Maybe she would have been less annoyed if she had been able to spend some time with him since the World Cup. After the announcement of the Tri-Wizard Tournament the night before, Alex wasn't able to catch Cedric to say goodnight. She was hoping to catch him to say goodnight and let him know she was headed to the Hospital wing to have her leg checked. Knowing how chivalrous he was, he would offer to escort her there. Her plans were quickly derailed when the headmaster dismissed the students to their dormitories and Alex couldn't get to Cedric fast enough. She ended up being accompanied by her brother, which almost seemed worse than going alone. As Madam Pomfrey unbandaged the wound on her leg, her brother looked about ready to pass out. The only good thing that came out of that night was that the pain on her leg was mostly gone and that it should only be a few days before her leg was fully healed up. Alex found that it was easier to walk, but after some time her leg would feel rather uncomfortable, as it was at that moment.

Time to give up.

Alex sighed to herself as the clock bell went off in the courtyard, signaling there was an hour remaining before classes started. It wasn't like Cedric to oversleep, but it was very possible he did after the eventful weekend they had. As Alex started to make her way back towards the castle, she felt two arms wrap around her waist and a warm kiss on her cheek as her body was pulled against another's. She couldn't help smiling, despite the impatience and irritation she felt only a few moments ago. She let herself enjoy the warmth of Cedric's embrace and the smell of his woodsy cologne for only a small moment. She could allow herself to enjoy his presence for a bit. It's only for a little while, then she'd let him have it. As his lips began to move towards her neck, Alex snapped out of her trance and quickly pushed herself out of his embrace. She took a moment to compose herself before crossing her arms over her chest and turning toward him with a frown.

"Where have you been?" She gave him an expectant look.

Cedric looked at her apologetically as he took a step towards her and pulled her body closer to his. "I'm sorry. I promise I will explain everything, just give me one moment."

He released Alex's waist and maneuvered her so she was in front of him. Placing his hands on her shoulders, he led her back to the courtyard. Alex kept her arms crossed as she let him lead her towards the secluded area where their morning 'dates' would usually be spent. He stopped her in front of a bench before turning her back to face him and signaling her to take a seat. Rolling her eyes, she obliged. Alex tried not to smile as Cedric moved to seat himself beside her and readjusted himself on his back to rest his head on her lap. Alex kept her arms crossed in front of her to keep herself from playing with his hair, as she normally would when they were together like this.

"You look quite adorable when you're angry." He smiled up at her. Alex shot him a glare. "I really am sorry, there is no excuse but please don't be mad at me. I want to enjoy the time we have before classes start and we both get busy." He looked at her with the adorable smile he knew she couldn't resist. Stay strong.

"I waited for you all morning! I even got here early today."

She looked down at him to see a smirk playing on his lips. She swat him on the head, which only caused him to laugh as he put his hands up in surrender. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I promise it won't happen again!" He took her hands in his and looked at her with a smile. "What other complaints do you have for me?"

"My leg is killing me from walking around all morning looking for you. I went-"

"Is it hurting still?" Cedric interrupted her, a look of concern passing over his face. "Did you get it checked out? Should I take you to the infirmary?" He started to sit up but Alex pushed his shoulder back down onto her lap. She couldn't help the giddy feeling that came due to his concern for her.

"Slow down, I had it checked out yesterday. Madam Pomfrey said it would take a few days to heal but the pain is mostly gone now." Alex shrugged, her left hand finding its way to his hair as she began to run her fingers through them. Cedric closed his eyes, enjoying the feel of her hand. "Now do you care to explain why you were late?"

"Mmmm, maybe in a minute." He smiled.

"Cedric."

"Let me just enjoy this moment."

"Cedric." Alex moved her other hands to his cheek.

Cedric sighed before opening his eyes to look at Alex. "I love when you do that."

"I know, and if you want me to keep doing it, you'll talk." She narrowed her eyes at him.

"Remind me to bring you a pastry next time we meet, you're quite moody in the morning."

"Cedric."

"Fine, fine. So I was late to see you this morning because I was waiting at the owlry for a letter from my father. I had sent him a letter last night after dinner to tell him about the Tri-Wizard Tournament. He-."

"Why were you talking to your dad about that?" Alex interrupted, her voice sounding slightly panicked. It's hadn't registered to Alex until that moment that Cedric was actually old enough to enter the tournament.

"Well... I wanted to tell him of my intentions to enter the tournament. I just thought I should let my father know about this, being that he is my guardian."

Was this a joke? Was he asking for her permission. It didn't sound like he was asking for her permission... it sounded like he was telling her.

"Alex?" Cedric looked at her in concern.

When Professor Dumbledore had first announced the tournament, Alex thought it was some easy competition of spells. Likely the worst that could happen was getting into it with a Slytherin. She was inclined on entering herself just to make her dad and Lupin proud. Her mind quickly changed when dinner came around and Fred, George and Lee told her more about the tournament's dangers. She was surprisingly relieved when the mustached dude from the Ministry announced that students under the age of seventeen were not allowed to enter. Alex was always up for fun and adventure, but the idea of dying in a wizard into competition didn't sound that fun to her.

"Love? Are you alright?"

"No! You can't enter In the tournament! It's dangerous Cedric! You could die!"

Cedric sighed as she dropped her hands beside her. He lifted his head off her lap and turned his body so he was seated beside her on the bench. He turned himself to fully face her and gently placed his hands on both her cheeks to cup her face.

"Alex… I don't even know if I'll be selected to participate. Honestly, if I do, it would be the greatest honor. Unlike many, I am old enough to enter my name in the goblet. Think of how great it would be to be the girlfriend of the Hogwarts champion for the TriWizard tournament?" Cedric gave her a hopeful smile.

"I don't find anything great about cheering for my boyfriend to not die. I'd rather be known as the girlfriend of a big loser! Which quite honestly, you are being a big loser right now!"

"Alex-"

"No, we aren't discussing this as a possibility." She interrupted him, pushing his hands away from her face so she could take them in hers. She squeezed his hands and leaned closer to him. "Cedric, please promise me you won't enter the tournament." She looked at him desperately, hoping to see the slightest sign that he understood her.

She was disappointed when Cedric averted his eyes to the floor beside them. "I'm sorry Alex, I really want to do this. Even my father agreed this is a great opportunity I can't possibly pass up. I don't want to regret not entering at the very least."

"Fine." Alex released his hands and stood up, brushing her robes with her hands as she stood.

"Alex-" Cedric stood, stepping closer to her. She quickly took a step back away from him.

"I think I should be getting to class." She replied quickly, her eyes staying trained on the floor. She couldn't look at him.

"Let me accompany you." Cedric pleaded.

"I can get myself to class on my own, thank you." She turned away from him swiftly and began walking towards the castle. She stopped once she was a few feet away from him, but still in hearing distance. "Go ahead and take part in the tournament. Just don't expect your girlfriend to be there to support you."

Alex didn't have to look back to know the expression that was probably on her boyfriends face as she walked away. It was hurt. Just like how he hurt her.

~~~~~
Dammit! Max thought to himself as he walked quickly towards the Great Hall in the hopes of finding something to eat before the start of his classes. Maybe if he's lucky, someone grabbed an apple they wouldn't mind giving up to him. As he approached the Great Hall, he could already see students making their way out, probably rushing off to prepare for their first class. Damnit, he had missed breakfast. Max sighed, giving up on his mission to the Great Hall and instead turning in the opposite direction towards his first class. He stopped, his eyes following the quickly emerging figure of his sister on the other side of the hall.
"Alex?" He called after her. She didn't notice him as she continued to walk swiftly down the hall. Damn did she look pissed off. I wonder who got her mad...
"Oof." Max stopped as he collided with someone. He turned his attention away from Alex as he heard something hit the floor.
"So sorry, I wasn't looking!" Mikayla looked at Max apologetically as she kneeled down to pick up the books that were scattered on the ground around them.
Max smiled at her before bending down to help her. "It's not your fault, I wasn't paying much attention either." He picked up some of the book, stacking them in his arm before grabbing the ones she was holding. "Let me help you. These are a lot of books."
Mikayla smiled, nodding as they both stood up. "Thank you Max. How gentlemanly of you."
"Can I carry these for you to your next class?" Max offered, signaling for Mikayla to lead the way.
"Why thank you, I'd love that." Mikayla began to walk, Max matched her speed to walk beside her. "So what had you so distracted that you were oblivious of your surrounding?"
Where was he going? "Oh yeah, I saw Alex and wanted to check in with her. I hadn't talked to her since I saw her on the train yesterday."
"Oh, I see. Well... if you want to go catch up to her, you-"
"No it's fine, I lost sight of her!" Max quickly replied with a smile. "So, I guess a welcome to Hufflepuff is in order. We are happy to have you."
"Why thank you." Mikayla giggled. Max couldn't helped smiling wider. How were her laughs so contagious? "I feel very welcome, well… with a few exceptions.
"Has someone been a jerk to you?"
"No, it's not that. Everyone has been so nice. I am just a little lost. This is my first day, in case you forgot."
"Then let me be your tour guide!" Max held an arm to his chest and bowed to her. He laughed as Mikayla curtsied back in response, another giggle escaping her lips.
"We must look like such dorks!" Mikayla shook her head at him as they continued to walk.
"As long as we look like dorks together!"Way to be corny. What was wrong with him?
"You're right! So where to, my all-knowing tour guide?"
"How about our first class? Since you're in Hufflepuff you and I have all the same classes. We can walk to the first class together and I'll show you all the best spots on the way?"
"Sounds good to me!"
"So our first class is a long walk, not much to see on the way so I'll just show you the courtyard and I guess conversation with me will have to suffice?"
"Okeydokey." Mikayla nodded as she walks beside him.
They walked silently at first, Max waving to a few friends as they made their way down the hall. He glanced at Mikayla a few times as he tried to think of something to say. Way to be an awesome tour guide..
"So, uh... didn't you say you have a brother? Is he also here? I don't think I saw any other transfers at the sorting."
Mikayla frowned. "Yes, Adam. He wasn't at the sorting because he decided to stick with Durmstrang for another year since they would be here anyway. Next year he'll officially be enrolled in Hogwarts. He probably would have asked to skip the official hat sorting anyway... he thinks it's weird since he is older."
"What house do you think he'd be in?"
"Not sure. Maybe Gryffindor or Slytherin or a Ravenclaw. Probably not Hufflepuff which I'd honestly prefer. I quite enjoy as much distance as possible from my brother." Mikayla sighed. Max could see there slight sadness in her eyes as she said this.
"Are you and your brother not close?"
"Not really. He's always been the super popular and talented one. I'm... just Mikayla I guess." Mikayla looked away, stopping as they reached the courtyard. "So what is this place?"
"Oh, right." Tour guide. You have one job! "This is the courtyard, where a lot of people hang out before, after and between classes. When they aren't in the common rooms of course." Max scanned the area, seeing the many familiar faces of the friends he was initially trying to locate that morning. "There are some people here I know but is it okay if I introduce them to you later?"
Mikayla nodded as he looked at her in relief. "Not a problem. I'd rather enjoy the tour with you now and meet your friends later. Where are we headed next?"
"Our first class. We'll be early though, is that okay?"
"Of course, I have my tour guide to entertain me." She linked her arms with his. Max felt his body freeze up the moment her arm made contact with his. Mikayla gave him an odd look as he suddenly stopped. Max quickly recomposed himself and started to lead them to their first class, a big smile plastered on his face.
