~Everything's Not What It Seems~
Alex and Justin are siblings sent to Hogwarts to learn about magic just like their father. There they meet new friends, fall in love, and find out that truly everything is not what it seems.

Harry continued to watch the door, hoping to see Alex enter in time for class. He frowned as he glanced over at the empty seat beside Hermione. Where was she? Harry looked at Justin, who was seated in the chair in front of his desk. He seemed preoccupied when they had entered the classroom, barely giving Ron, Hermione, and Harry a 'hello.,
"Justin was looking for her this morning. Not sure where she went." Hermione whispered to Harry.
He looked at her. "How'd you know I was wondering where Alex was?"
"Because I know you Harry." Hermione shrugged.
"It's Mad-Eye Moody." Ron almost squealed with fright on the other side of him. Harry looked to the front of the classroom as the ex-Auror hobbled into the room.
"Alastor Moody, ex-auror and your new Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor." He scanned the classroom as he stopped in front of the class. Ron gulped beside him as Professor Moody's eyes passed over him. Harry suppressed a laugh with a cough at the look on his friends face, averting his eyes to the text book in front of him.
"When it comes to dark arts I like to take a practical approach, which means no secrets, no lies, and no hiding around the bush. I get right to it. First, who can tell me how many unforgiveable curses there are?" He looked around the room again. He pointed at Hermione who had hesitantly raised her hand.
"Three, sir." Hermione replied with a look of discomfort.
"Yes, three. The ministry believes that you are all too young to know about them, I say different! You need to be prepared and you need to know what's coming!" He turned back towards the blackboard and scribbled down some notes.
When he turned back around his eyes went towards them. He made his way over to their desk, stopping in front of Ron. "Stand up Weasley." Ron shot up with fear and looked towards Professor Moody with an expression that Harry recognized as one of a person on the verge of tears. "Yes s…sir."
"Name an unforgiveable curse!"
Ron gulped. "My dad did tell me one, the imperious curse." He slunk down to his seat as Professor Moody leaned closer to him with his eye.
"Yeah, yeah, your father would know all about that. Gave the ministry quite a lot of grief a few years ago. Maybe today I'll be able to show you why."
He turned away from Ron and walked towards a table full of jars. He opened one and picked out a large spider. As he held it in his hand, he used his free had to point his wand at the creature as he removed his hand from the jar. The spider grew in size as a devious smile formed on his lips. "Imperio!"
The spider shot across the room and fell on Neville's head. Neville immediately burst into shrieks of horror before the spider suddenly jumped onto Padma's arm. Draco bursts into laughter as he pointed at Padma. Professor Moody gave him a glare before moving the spider onto his nose. Malfo began to scream as the rest of the class began to laugh. Brilliant! Harry clapped and high-fived Ron who was now laughing along with him.
"What she will do next, we never know. She can jump on someone else, or throw herself in a bucket of water." Professor Moody directed the spider over a bucket, the spider struggled as he slowly lowered his wand towards the bucket before launching the spider back to his hand.
"Many who worked under You-Know-Who claimed to be under this curse when they carried out their tasks. The problem is, how do we sort the liars from those actually under the curse? Another Curse?"
Hands shot up around but Professor Moody expectantly watched Neville until he raised his hand. "Longbottom, stand up. Give us another curse."
Neville stood and looked around the class hesitantly before looking back at Professor Moody "The cruciatus curse."
"Correct, come, come Longbottom." Professor Moody and Neville walked over to a table where he placed the spider on it and pointed his wand at the spider. "Crucio!"
The spider began to shriek, a shrieking that filled the room. Harry covered his ears as he looked around, seeing the apparent discomfort on everyone's faces. He looked at Neville again to see the worst pain passing over his face.
"Stop it! Stop it! Can't you see it's bothering him!" Hermione stood up and yelled out angrily.
Professor Moody lowered his wand and took the spider in his hand. He walked over to Hermione and placed the spider on her book. He already knew what was coming. He averted his eyes, looking in front of him instead where he could see Justin's hands on the table, his hands balled up in fists.
"Would you like to tell us the last curse Ms. Granger?" Hermione shook her head and looked away, tears forming in her eyes.
"Avada Kedavra!" The spider's shrieks filled the room again, but this time only momentarily before the room went silent again. Harry kept his eyes forward to control himself from the anger that was just waiting to get out. In front of him, he could see Justin doing the same, his knuckles turning white at how tights he had balled up his hands.
"Only one person has lived through this spell and he is sitting currently in this room." Professor Moody moved over to stand in front of Harry, blocking his view of Justin. He stared at Harry, his fake eye scanning him up and down. Harry could only stare back at him silently.
~~~~~
"That was frightening." Ron said as he followed Ron, Hermione and Justin out of the classroom.
"It was also odd…" Harry added. Justin stopped abruptly and turned towards him.
"Aren't you the slightest bit angry that our new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor just used the exact spell that killed your parents and my mother to torture and kill a defenseless animal?" Justin looked at Harry angrily.
"Of course I'm angry Justin, that was not the easiest lecture to sit through. But what exactly was I supposed to do?" Harry looked at him expectantly.
"I don't know. I'm just... frustrated and angry about all this. And I still have fifth year Defense Against the Dark Arts at some point later today. I'm just glad Alex wasn't in class today. She would have lost it." He sighed, running a hand through his face. Alex really would not have been able to keep it together. "I better get going to my next class."
Just as Justin turned to walk away, he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to see Harry looking at him with concern. "What now Harry?"
"I was just wondering... where was Alex this morning?"
"She had some business to take care of… with Professor Dumbledore and Professor Snape."
"She got in trouble?" Ron asked a little too loudly. A few passer-biers eyed them strangely.
Hermione looked at him curiously. "Did she?"
"Well… she is Alex, she was bound to get into some sort of trouble sooner or later. I mean, did you see the prank she pulled yesterday with Fred and George?" Justin forced a laugh as he shook his head. "Anyway, I should go-"
"That's preposterous!" Hermione interrupted him. If Alex got apprehended for the prank yesterday, she shouldn't be the only one being punished. Fred and George should also be in Professor Dumbledore's office!" Hermione shot Ron a glare as she said this.
"What did I do? It's my brothers who got away with it, not me!" Ron took a step away from Hermione and nudged Harry to help him out.
"Look, we can deal with this later when we see Alex. For now, you guys should really get to your class and I should really get to mine. Maybe you'll catch Alex in class at some point once Professor Snape and Professor Dumbledore let her go. And if not, we know that we'll at least see her at lunch." Hermione and Harry nodded in agreement as Justin waved them away.
Ron opened his mouth to say something but Harry and Hermione both grabbed onto his shoulder and steered him in the opposite direction.
"Hold up, stop shoving me!" Ron complained.
Justin shook his head as the three disappeared around the corner. At least Hermione and Harry were the sensible ones. Justin could only imagine where Ron would be if it were not for his two friends. He sighed as he pulled his schedule out of his pocket. As his eyes went to the second line of his schedule, he internally groaned.
2nd Period: 5th Year Defense Against the Dark Arts
Wonderful.
Max sat down in the only available seats in his third class of the day, a seat which happened to be between Marietta and Mikayla. He looked over at Theo on the other side of the classroom who was shaking his head at him with pity. Why did he think this would be such a bad idea?
He looked at Mikayla on his right, contemplating how to start a conversation with her. She had barely said a word to him since the beginning of their first class. When class ended, she rushed to pack up her things and quickly made her way out of classroom. Max was able to convince Marietta to go on without him so he could get advice from Theo. He learned very quickly that Theo was of no help. His friend suggested to him that he run in the opposite direction as quickly as he possibly could. To top it all off, Marietta had been acting really out of character from what he was used to in their owls that summer.
At least he had his favorite class to look forward to, Defense Against the Dark Arts. Though… he only really liked the class because Professor Lupin didn't mind his strange questions. Neither did Professor McGonagall when she took over for the class for rest of the year. Maybe this Mad Moody dude could be good too?
"Hello second years, my name is Alastor Moody and I am the new Defense Against the Dark Art Professor." Alastor?Max thought his name was Mad Moody. Maybe he got it wrong? Max should correct him.
He shot his hand up as Professor Moody's eyes quickly darted In his direction. Max continued to hold up his hand expectantly as his professor stared at him.
He finally motioned Max to speak. "Out with it."
"I thought your name was Mad Moody. Who's Alastor? Honestly you should stick with Mad Moody, it sounds cooler."
His eyed narrow towards Max, slight irritation passing over his eye. "Mr. Russo, since you are so fond of speaking up, why don't you help me with today's lesson. I believe that we should take a practical approach when it comes to the dark arts and that means telling all to all. That's why today we will be discussing the unforgiveable curses."
"Does that mean that the person who is cursed is unforgiveable? But that's not fair!" Max shouted. What if someone tried to use this spell on him? What would Max do?!
"That's not what I meant, and it's unforgiveable because-"
"This is lame, man. Professor Crumbs would never allow for this kind of spell!" Max cut him off as he stood up. The rest of the class went quiet as they watched Max's outburst. "No one should be punished with never being forgiven! It's not like they wanted the curse."
"Mr. Russo, will you just listen to me! That's not how it is-"
"It doesn't matter how it works! It should be changed! The poor victim of that spell! What if someone put the curse on me? I didn't do anything! Why should I never be forgiven?"
Professor Moody stared at Max silently as he finally gave up on arguing with the second year. Max didn't move from his standing position as he continued to stare at the Professor. Finally he sighed and turned away from the students, making his way over to the chalk board. "Your homework for today is to read the first two chapters of your books, you are dismissed."
No one moved as they stared at the back of Professor Mood's head. Was he really letting them go? He looked around him as no one made any attempt to move. Was this a test?
"OUT!" Immediately everyone around Max stood up hastily, grabbing their belonging before they rushed out the door. Max shrugged before following his classmates out of the classroom.
