~Everything's Not What It Seems~

Alex and Justin are siblings sent to Hogwarts to learn about magic just like their father. There they meet new friends, fall in love, and find out that truly everything is not what it seems.

"What was that about?" Alex asked as they reached the entrance to the owlry. "I definitely don't have any letter to send to anyone."

"Mikayla suggested we save you from Adam." Max explained.

"He seems to know you?" Alex looked at Mikayla.

Mikayla nodded, a frown forming on her lips. "Yes he does. Adam is my brother. His actual name is Adam Lovegood but he doesn't like using our surname."

Alex stared at Mikayla, noticing the slight resemblance between the two. He had the same eye color and face features as Mikayla, but the color of her hair was slightly lighter than Adam's and her nose was a different shape.

"We look related... the surname usually throws people off... and well the fact that he is this amazing quidditch player that everyone fawns over." Mikayla sighed. "I prefer that people don't know we are related. People expect me to be as amazing as he is."

"I don't know what you're talking about. I think your are beyond amazing." Max looked at Mikayla with a lovestruck smile. Alex couldn't help smiling as she looked at the them. Her little brother definitely has a crush.

"You guys are adorable."

Max and Mikayla quickly averted their gazes. Max coughed awkwardly as a blush crept onto Mikayla's cheeks.

"Anyway... do you two care to explain why I need to be saved from Mikayla's brother?" She looked between the two expectantly.

"You may have already heard this... but my brother kind of has a reputation." Mikayla said hesitantly.

"Meaning?"

"During his fourth year, he was seeing this girl that lived outside the closest town to Durmstrang. She was homeschooled but she would do odd jobs at the school from time to time. He met her and they got to know each other. Eventually they started dating and this went on for a while. He would always talk about her when he would be home for Christmas and summer break. I don't know the story exactly... because he doesn't really talk about it, but apparently they had snuck out together a few nights before the Christmas break and went into the forest just outside the school. Adam came out... but she never did. Her family searched for her for weeks and Adam stopped talking about her. They ended up finding her body by a river that ran through the forest after New Years. Adam never said anything but he's dated a lot of girls since then... those relationships would never last more than a few days."

"Wow... and did the school do anything? Or the ministry." Alex asked.

"No..." Mikayla hesitated. "I don't know how much you two know about Durmstrang, but they have certain... requirements for admission. They think pure bloods are more important than half bloods and... mudbloods. The girl was a half-blood so the school didn't think an investigation was necessary. The ministry took their word for it. With no information on what happened or witnesses, they concluded the cause of death was her falling into the river."

"If he's suspected to have had something to do with her death... then why do girls date him?" Max asked in confusion.

"I'm not sure... the novelty of dating a bad boy celebrity, I guess. Not to mention he has a perfect profile in all other senses. He has high marks in all of his classes, one of the youngest quidditch players in the World Cup, popular amongst all the boys at his school, and he is a regular summer intern for the Ministry of Magic." Mikayla looked at her hands sadly. "He's kind of perfect."

"Except that he possibly murdered his girlfriend?" Alex looked at her in disbelief. "I'm pretty sure that fact trumps all his good attributes."

"I know... I just wanted to warn you. I don't actually think my brother is capable of murder... but He and I have never really been close. Max was telling me he seemed to have an interest for you. I just didn't want you to get hurt." Mikayla looked at her apologetically.

"I appreciate it, Mikayla. You're probably the first person to actually tell me what they mean by 'he has a reputation.'" She held up her hands in quotations. "It's really irritating. As if I was interested in him in the first place! Like yeah, he's attractive, but I have boyfriend! Adam seems to think that doesn't matter because he keeps trying to ask me out." She rolled her eyes.

"Was he trying to ask you out when we interrupted?" Max asked.

"Yes. Even after I pointed out again that I have a boyfriend that I'm going with to the Yule Ball."

"Well as long as you keep saying no, you'll be fine." Mikayla assured her. "Anyway, I need to get this letter to my mum so the owl will get to her by the end of the day."

"I'll join you." Max volunteered quickly.

"And I'll get out of your hairs. Lupin's owl delivered my dress this morning and I think I should go try it on."

Mikayla and Max quickly gave their goodbyes before heading into the owlry. She watched with a smile as the two chatted happily with each other as they disappeared from view.

"You still haven't told anyone who your date is to the Yule Ball, have you?" Alex looked curiously at the bed beside hers where Hermione was organizing her makeup.

"I have not." She responded as she looked up at Alex. "It's a surprise."

"Okay."

"Were you able to square away everything you needed for the ball? A dress? Shoes? Jewelry?" Hermione asked as she abandoned her organizing to seat herself on the bed across from Alex.

"Yes. Lupin got me everything I needed. He went to a shop a few days ago and helped me put an order for a dress. It came in this morning. I think it should work." Alex shrugged.

She hadn't been particularly excited for her dress because she wasn't particularly excited for the ball. Alex had to admit though, the dress her godfather had helped her pick out was gorgeous. It was a pink strapless ball gown with appliqué floral lace. She had requested the seamstress remove a few layers under the skirt to reduce the width of the dress and make it easier for her to move around. When she tried it on, Alex had found that it fit her perfectly and was exactly how she had envisioned it. But even when it was on her body and she was staring at herself in the mirror, she wasn't excited to wear it.

"I can hardly wait to see it." Hermione smiled.

"Were Ron and Harry able to find dates?" Alex asked, remembering the sour look on Ron's face the previous day when she'd asked him about it.

"Yes. Harry asked Parvati and Padma to be their dates. I still need to remind Harry that he and Parvati will need to dance at the start of the ball with the other champions and their dates." Hermione said to herself.

"Ugh. I am also not looking forward to that. I just hope we get through it quickly... and that Cedric knows what he's doing. I could barely follow along when Professor McGonagall had us practice. George did most of the work."

"I took a few classes growing up. As long as you have a good partner that is capable of leading you, you should be fine." Hermione agreed with a smile. "It's exciting, isn't it?"

"I guess..." Alex shrugged. "Dances aren't really my thing. Even in muggle school. I was hoping to skip the whole event."

"It'll be fun, you'll see."

"And your shoes are sturdy, no chance of a slip or fall?" Justin asked as he and Ginny walked down to the library hand-in-hand. It was the morning of the Yule Ball and Justin was doing a last check that everything was in order before he dived into another OWL study session.

"Yes Justin, stop worrying. I walked around the dormitories last night in my shoes and made sure they were comfortable." She assured him.

Justin nodded. "I just want to make sure everything is perfect. I'm so nervous for the entrance and the dance. I don't even know if Alex has a dress for the ball. I was thinking I should talk to my dad but I didn't want to worry him by telling him that Alex and I were not speaking. In New York she would just go to the mall with Harper or get something online."

"I can try to find out from Hermione? I'm sure she knows." Ginny suggested.

He shook his head. "I appreciate it, but I don't think that's a good idea. Not after what happened last week..." Justin looked at her apologetically.

"Okay." Ginny nodded. "I'm sure she figured something out. Don't worry Justin, tonight will be perfect." Ginny smiled as they arrived outside the library entrance.

"It will as long as you're with me the whole night." Justin smiled back as he took hold of her other hand.

"We should get inside. You need to meet your study quota for the day so you can enjoy the ball tonight." Ginny reminded him.

"You're right! I love that you keep me on track with my studying goals." Justin released one hand before leading Ginny inside the library. He would make most of his studying time and worry about the Yule Ball later.
