CHAPTER 10 – Roxas

It smells the same. It's weird how smell brings back memories so easily. If Roxas closes his eyes and forgets everything else, he remembers his beginnings here in Twilight Town. The vendors' tasty food, the faint metallic scent from the railway, even the smell of the warmth from the sunshine coming off the bricks.

Roxas allows himself this moment to calm down. Being here causes anxiousness he thought he could conquer. (He still thinks he can, he just needs a minute.)

A hand slips into his. He opens his eyes and sees Kairi beside him. The reassuring smile she offers does help somewhat. He's happy to not be doing this alone.

He informed her of his uncertainties on the trip here. Funny, it's a lot easier to talk about this kind of thing now—after the whole Radiant Garden fiasco. It's like another wall was broken down for them both, and they're free to talk more about what's worrying them. Either that, or it's a full accumulation of their trip where they are finally at a point it's all ok. They are ok with anything the other person can throw their way.

Twilight Town is a sensitive subject for Roxas. After the chaos two years ago, he did attempt to stay in Twilight Town. He figured it would work because, hey, he has lived here before and it worked great. Why not now?

It was nice for a while, but several factors made it hard for him to stay. One was the fact that the others in their keyblade group had other responsibilities and desires which required his presence. He would often have to leave to be a part of whatever they had cooked up—as did Xion and Ax—Lea. When he tried returning to Twilight Town afterwards, it was difficult readjusting back. Not to mention, with Lea and Xion not being there often either, he felt a little more awkward going back by himself.

In addition, the lifestyle he had readjusted to was relaxed, which sounds great, but Roxas has been through so much to the point he sleeps lightly enough a pin dropping could wake him. In a weird way, the lazy world scares him, like he's expecting it to turn on him any second. He woke up anxious and went to bed anxious while in this world, unable to relax despite everything here practically screaming at him to do just that.

Not to mention the memories. (Oh, the memories.) Originally the memories were what Roxas planned on helping him to settle into Twilight Town. And it did—for about two days. Sure, he remembered the good times—the beautiful weather, the nice folks, his friends, the ice cream (the beautiful sea salt ice cream, he could eat a million of those). They were a comfort. But as comforting as those were, there were equally terrible memories.

Let's see, where to begin…there are so many of them. He remembers his fight with Xion and Axel (Axel then, not Lea) here. He remembers losing the munny he and his friends were going to use to go to the beach (that certainly broke his heart). And of course, he remembers this is the place his fake home fell apart before his very eyes, and he ended up being told he was never supposed to exist.

(Yeah. Good times.)

"You ready?" Kairi asks gently, breaking his thoughts.

Roxas nods and holds her hand tight as they go on their way. They're in front of the train station and the famous clock tower Roxas remembers falling off of. The world rushed by in that moment until it didn't and a beautiful voice came through. And that's how he (sort of) met Kairi for the first time. A wonderful and tragic moment all rolled into one.

"Thanks," he says to her as they walk through town.

"Hm? For what?"

"Being here."

Kairi smiles and nudges him with her shoulder. "Always. How are you holding up?"

Roxas assesses himself. "Ok. Sturdier than anticipated."

"I'll take it," Kairi says. "Nervous about seeing them?"

"A little." (A lot.)

Hayner, Pence, and Olette. Three amazing friends he feels he abandoned. He hasn't spoken to them in over six months. Hasn't seen them in over a year. He feels awful about it and wonders if they hold it against him.

He knows it's his responsibility to be the one to contact them more. King Mickey gave them a communicator, so they call sometimes, but Roxas isn't always available nor does he always want to chat. (Not to mention, his increasing guilt for not having contacted them in too long makes it even harder to reach out.) He wouldn't blame them if they're mad. He'd be a little irked if it were reversed.

But they are incredibly understanding, especially considering they went through part of the chaos themselves and handled it like champs. (It's this understanding Roxas is hoping for.)

Too soon they reach the entrance to the Usual Spot. It's a few steps around the corner and Roxas will be able to see inside. His heart is only a little panicked. He stops just shy of the entrance. Kairi stops with him and patiently waits for him to get his bearings.

After a second to take another breath, Roxas is ready. He nods to Kairi who smiles. Hand-in-hand, they step around the corner.

Despite not hearing anything as they approached the entrance, it is not empty. The Twilight Town trio is there. It's a mellow moment where each person is in their own private thoughts. Hayner with a hacky-sack, Olette with a book, and Pence with his laptop.

Pence is first to notice. He sees movement out of the corner of his eye. Glancing up he sees the last two people he expected to see today.

"Hey!"

His exclamation startles the other two. Olette nearly drops her book, and Hayner's streak is gone as the small beanbag hits the floor.

"What gives, man?" Hayner asks his friend, but Pence pays no mind. He's already putting down his laptop and running the few steps to the entrance. When Hayner sees what the commotion is about, he can't believe it himself for a moment, but then Olette is on her way towards them too. That's when it fully hits him, and he follows the others.

Roxas had hoped for courtesy enough they would allow him to try and explain his constant absence. But they didn't let him explain because they are far too busy exchanging hugs and slaps on the back and talking over one another to even try listening to what's being said.

"What are you doing here?"

"We needed a vacation and thought—"

"This is the best place you could possibly be for that."

"Is anyone else here?"

"No, they—"

"Hey, doesn't matter too much because you two are here!"

"You better have brought souvenirs from your trips."

"They don't need to give us things—"

"They better! I need something from the great wide worlds."

"As a matter of fact," Kairi says as she digs in her bag. She pulls out three pristine flowers. "These are for you. They're specially treated so they won't wilt for a long, long time. From my world to yours."

The three recipients take their gifts and marvel.

"It's so pretty!" Olette exclaims.

"Not bad." Hayner holds his close for inspection.

"What do you do to them exactly?" Pence asks.

Kairi holds a finger to her lips. "Sorry, but that's a secret. Can't have all the worlds knowing how we keep our flowers perfect. We might lose the name Radiant Garden again. Can't have that!"

"Fair enough," Pence laughs.

"So how've you been, Roxas?" Hayner turns to his friend. (He's certainly looking at him like he's still a friend.)

"I-I've been good," Roxas says.

Hayner gives him a thumbs up. "That's good to hear. Probably busy with all those worlds out there demanding help."

"They're pretty demanding," Roxas chuckles. He scratches the back of his head. (Surprisingly, he doesn't chastise himself for this. Sure, it's what Sora does, but…it feels different now. He doesn't feel as…linked? Yeah, linked.)

"Actually," Kairi says, "we just finished up with two missions in a row and decided we needed a break."

Pence's ears perk at this. "Oh yeah? Tell us! We need to hear the action because it's certainly been boring around these parts."

"I've got to agree," Olette says. "You guys brought all the action. The most action we see now is deciding which college to go to."

Hayner groans. "Please don't bring it up again."

"I'd like to hear your thoughts for school," Kairi says. "Believe it or not, I miss school. The normalcy of it."

"Ok, we'll make you a deal. We will tell you all about our school troubles if you fill us in on your missions and what's kept you away this long." Hayner holds his hand out to Roxas.

Roxas looks at him and can't help returning the smile, (and finally feeling some of the anxiety leave). He takes his friend's hand. "You've got yourself a deal."

Olette's ice cream is in danger of falling to the floor. It's melting right off the stick, but she is too distracted by her laughter to care. However, she's better off than the other two. Hayner can't breathe from how hard he's laughing, and Pence is already on the floor.

"You can't be serious," Pence wheezes.

"I'm serious!" Roxas laughs. He doesn't mind the laughter is at his expense. He doesn't mind because they have every right. He turns to grin at a giggling Kairi.

"It's true, I've seen it," she confirms.

"But you're not scary," Olette argues while trying to hide her laughter behind her hand.

Roxas sits up straighter. "I resent that. I'm plenty scary."

"Ha!" Hayner points at him. "Not the Roxas we know. You softie."

"The softie that won the Struggle Tournament, thank you very much," Roxas points out. He knows Ansem's copies of his friends were the ones to witness it, but the originals have been fully informed of all the happenings in their replicated home.

"He's got a point," Pence says from his place on the floor. He's gotten a grip but hasn't fully recovered. He lies there waiting for the moment he can take a full breath again.

"Fine, fine," Hayner throws up his hands. "A scarecrow was created in your image because you are just so terrifying."

"Darn right I am." Roxas takes his final bite of ice cream.

Kairi digs in her bag and pulls out the disposable camera given to her and Roxas in Radiant Garden. "I've got digital proof. As soon as these are developed, you'll be able to see it."

"Score!" Olette chimes in.

Roxas still kind of regrets getting proof of that scarecrow, but Kairi (in all her giggling, smiling glory) pleaded with him which he was obviously powerless to fight.

They had visited Halloween Town on their way to Twilight Town—per Kairi's request. Knowing it existed was not enough. She needed to see it in person. Not only that, but have Roxas stand next to the statue, imitate it, and allow her to take a picture. Their keyblade group won't let him live it down once they see the photo—just like Hayner, Pence, and Olette will do. (Surprisingly, Roxas is ok with it.)

Roxas and Kairi had gone both there and Agrabah. ("But Roxas, only I danced in Agrabah. We didn't dance together. We need to so we can say we danced together at each world, not just me. Please!") They had stopped just outside of Agrabah's walls, got out, danced a few minutes in the blistering heat of the desert, then ran back into the cool gummi ship. Kairi is now fib-free when she declares they danced in every world.

"See?" Pence says, sitting up from the floor and leaning back against the brick wall of the Usual Spot, "you guys have all the fun."

"School can be…well," Kairi reworks her sentence, "not fun, but nice. It would be nice to see everyone on a regular basis."

Roxas watches his girlfriend's expression a little more closely when she says this, but it's clear. No pain. Either he is slipping when it comes to reading her or she really is doing better. But Roxas is feeling better too so why shouldn't she? Maybe they actually have gotten past the worst of it. He feels stronger from it even.

"What? Seeing these two every day?" Hayner quips.

"Ha!" Olette says. She tosses her now ice cream-less stick at him. "Says the guy who sulked when we were busy with our summer jobs and couldn't hang out."

"All I wanted was a nice beach trip, but no. You guys had to be earning money."

"Oh yeah," Pence muses. "I almost forgot."

"You guys wanted to go to the beach?" Kairi asks.

Pence nods. "We had a week where we finally had enough money, but work kept pulling us away."

"Are you going to try before school starts?" Kairi asks. Roxas grins. He can sense the eagerness.

Hayner, Pence, and Olette glance at one another.

"You know," Pence starts, "it is the week before school starts."

"The week our summer jobs ended," Olette adds. "Why don't we go to the beach?"

Hayner stands up from the crate he's claimed as his seat. "We have to go!" There isn't room for debate, not that any of his friends care to. Kairi even cheers. "Our last hoorah before school drags us back. Start counting. What's our munny look like for the tickets?"

"We have plenty," Olette says.

"And then some," Pence says. "Summer jobs, remember?"

"Great!" Roxas lights up at the news. (It's weird, but a sudden rush of memory invades him. His three best friends, scrambling to get to the beach before school, the taste of seasalt ice cream on his tongue in a promise of real seasalt to come.)

"Tomorrow should be spent getting supplies," Kairi says. "I mean, what's the beach without a bonfire, or marshmallows to roast?"

"An excellent point," Hayner points his finger at her for emphasis. "Everybody, make a list of what you think we will need tomorrow, and meet back here to make a game plan."

"Sweet." Pence stands up. "It's about sunset. Shall we head out?"

"I almost forgot!" Olette heads for the exit with the rest of the crew. She stops in front of Kairi and Roxas. "You two haven't had this treat in far too long."

"Yeah," Roxas muses, "too long."

"Come on, guys." Pence gestures for the others to come along.

As everyone follows, Kairi hangs back with Roxas just a few steps from the others. She nudges him. He glances down. Her smile automatically makes him smile.

You ok? she mouths.

Roxas nods. He takes her hand and leans over, placing a quick kiss on her forehead.

"I saw that!"

The sharp sound of Olette's declaration startles Roxas and Kairi apart, as if caught doing some nefarious act. Roxas already feels his cheeks burn despite knowing he's got nothing to be embarrassed about.

"Saw what?" Hayner asks. He poses ready for a fight. "What is it?"

Olette doesn't answer him. She's got a sneaky look on her face. That along with her hands on her hips and her lean towards them implies there is no getting out her next line of questioning.

"You two are together," she says and points accusingly at them.

Roxas glances down at Kairi who looks back at him while attempting not to smile, biting her lower lip as she does. (It's kind of unfair she does that now, when they've been caught, rather than back at their rented rooms here. He kind of wants to kiss her. But not with an audience.)

"Together?" Hayner asks. The poor guy is clearly lost.

Pence seems to catch on quicker. "Like, together together?"

Roxas looks back at his old friends. He shrugs. "What can I say? I'm irresistible."

Kairi's laugh is accompanied by a light swat on his shoulder. "Yep. Can't resist the charm of this one."

"Wait, you two are a couple?" Hayner asks.

Roxas nods, serious now. "Yeah. She's my girlfriend."

"No. Way." Olette seems as if she's received a present. She grabs Kairi's arm and pulls her away from Roxas. "You have to tell me everything! All the details."

"That might be a lot. You sure you can handle it?" Kairi teases.

"Don't you dare leave anything out," Olette warns.

The girls walk a few paces ahead now, leaving the boys behind. They fall in step with one another as they follow.

"Really?" Pence asks Roxas. He can't not ask. "Like, for really real? Princess Kairi?"

Roxas shrugs again. "Yeah. For real. She's my girlfriend."

Hayner grabs his shoulder and gives it a hardy shake. "Nice work, man."

Roxas tries not to, but he beams. (He's got Kairi. The best of the best in his humble opinion. But hey, being honest, he knows what a catch Kairi is. Physically—well, someone just has to see her to know attractive she is. Incredibly so. Not to mention a pure heart that shows in all she does and says. Yeah, Roxas is well aware of how lucky he is.)

Pence looks deep in thought, though, rather than impressed. He finally voices his thoughts. "So, what, are you a prince-in-training?"

"Eh. I'm more like her escort if you want to use fancy royal jargon."

"The prince has arrived! Woe to Radient Garden! The world shall fall into chaos! Roxas The Bumbling! Beware!"

Roxas takes a swing at his friend, but Hayner surprisingly dodges it. He runs, but Roxas is hot on his heels. All the while, he shouts any other minor insult that comes to mind.

It takes a minute, but Roxas manages to catch his friend. A brief bit of wrestling and soon their laughter stops their roughhousing.

"But for real," Hayner says, slightly out of breath, "congrats. She's great."

"Thanks, I think so." Roxas glances over at Kairi and Olette who have stopped watching the spectacle and gone back to heading for the clocktower. They're deep in conversation which gives Roxas the moment he's been waiting for. His arm is around Hayner's shoulders, giving him leverage to steer him towards Pence. Pence jolts back when his shirt is yanked. Roxas puts his other arm around his shoulder and dips his head slightly. The other two sense the change and listen intently.

"You guys mind helping me out with something?"

"This is a big deal, isn't it?"

Hayner stands guard at the door with his eyes peeled for any signs of an approaching redhead.

"You could say that," Roxas says as he digs in one of the seemingly unnecessary pockets of his jacket. Not so unnecessary now. It's good for hiding things. Too good because Roxas has to dig in it a little longer than usually needed, making him anxious because if he lost what was inside, he will never forgive himself, never—

There it is!

"Ah hah!" Roxas smiles at the jeweler who has been waiting patiently. Hayner lets out a low whistle when he sees the shiny rock.

The jeweler accepts the rather large red ruby, takes it between his fingers, and looks closer with a loupe (a fancy, schmancy magnifying glass) to assess the quality.

"Hmmmm…" The gentleman takes his time inspecting. He is by far the most recommended jeweler for a reason—his thorough approach to each job. And the jewel handed to him is certainly something he didn't expect from the spunky kid who entered not too long ago, requesting a rush job. Finally, he puts it down, and addresses the fidgeting young man.

"Well, quite a stone you have there, my boy. How did you come across it?"

"A friend gave it to me," Roxas answers honestly.

"Quite a generous friend. I hope they know what they gave you because this is a rather pretty chunk of munny."

"Eh, my friend works in the mines. He finds them all the time. He spared me this one because he knew it reminded me of—of, ah, of my girlfriend." Roxas can't help blushing admitting so much to a stranger. "That's who it's for once I get it made into a necklace."

"So a necklace is what you wish."

"Heart shaped, please. I've got munny. I can pay. Just please do it as fast as you can—please. I need it by the end of the week, please." (If Roxas puts in enough "pleases" it might get done when he needs it.)

The jeweler turns the ruby over in his hand. It really is a flawless piece. He could create this into something special. It would be an honor to work with such a gem, and for such a worthy cause. The jeweler has seen plenty of young men come into his store intent on getting the best for their beloved. Customers such as these were his favorite. They show true love still exists. This young man is no exception. The eagerness in his eyes is quite evident.

"Alright, my boy, I'll be able to get the necklace ready in a couple days, but only on two conditions!" The jeweler holds up his finger, relishing the poorly hidden dread on Roxas's face. "One, I only charge you half price, and two, you give this to your girl in only the best of settings. I mean it. Only the most romantic will do."

Roxas heaves a sigh of relief. "You have yourself a deal. Do I need to pay you now?"

The jeweler waves his hand. "Pay when you pick it up. I'll have it ready in two days. Sound ok?"

"Sounds perfect." Roxas takes the man's offered hand in both of his and shakes it vigorously. "Thank you, sir. Really. Thank you!"

"Alright, alright," The jeweler laughs, taking back his hand. "Go on. Can't have your girl catch you in here."

"Right." Roxas heads out the door, throwing one more "Thanks again!" over his shoulder before leaving.

Hayner nudges him once they're a safe distance from the jeweler's and there's no Kairi in sight. "What kind of friends do you find in those worlds that they just give you thousands of munny's worth of gems?"

"This was a special occasion," Roxas says. He sets his board on the stone pavement. Hayner does the same. They ride at a leisure pace and continue to talk. "I was admiring that one while it was still stuck in the dirt and almost got my head bitten off for even looking at it. But Dopey—"

"Unique name."

"Yeah. He knew I wasn't going to steal it despite what Grumpy thought I—"

"Is that his real name?"

"Yep."

"Ok, cool. Continue."

"Grumpy thought I was stealing it when I was only looking. Dopey probably felt bad I got yelled at and gave it to me."

"And you've kept it specifically to give to Kairi? I thought you said you two weren't together at the beginning of the trip."

"We weren't." Roxas and Hayner turn the corner and head for the theater. "It reminded me of a heart, and, I don't know, it felt special. So I kept it. It's only when Kairi and I got together did I have an idea for it."

"Nice."

They come to a stop and take a seat at the theater benches. Pence should meet them any minute now. He was in charge of flower ordering.

"I gotta say, you are really going all-out," Hayner says, referring to the many stores they've visited today. "Can I ask where you're getting the munny from?" Hayner lays flat on the bench, looking to Roxas who is sitting opposite him. "I mean, we were supposed to be getting stuff for the beach day, but you covered those expenses. And then you tell Pence and me you want us to help you with something else. That 'something else' is expensive-looking."

"I've got some munny saved up." Roxas can see Hayner isn't satisfied with this answer so he continues. "The king gives each of us a small allowance. Payment maybe. As long as we are working on his missions, he gives us a bit of munny to take care of anything we might need while away—like food or lodging. Usually we end up staying at the place of someone we know, and they end up feeding us so I don't end up spending much. I've got some savings. Not a lot, but enough to where I'm comfortable spending it on something important. This is important."

"Your first official date, so you've said." Hayner chuckles. He looks up to the sky above. "What's it like? Being a warrior and all. It must be exciting."

Roxas grunts. He lays down on his own bench and watches the same clouds as his friend. "It's not all it's cracked up to be. Believe me, a lot less glorious than it sounds. And warrior is the wrong word. I'm more of a glorified attendant. After the big fiasco a few years ago, we haven't done anything of note since. And…I'm ok with that. I don't want to be a warrior."

"You don't? That's new. I thought you were following Sora's footsteps."

(Hayner's words…surprisingly don't stab Roxas like he thought they would. Wow. One deep breath and the memory of Kairi saying he's only ever been Roxas to her calms him down. Surprisingly, it doesn't hurt as much as the comparison usually does. Progress.)

"It was more because I didn't know I could do anything else. But since staying in Radiant Garden, I figured out I can be anything. Sounds cheesy, like something I should have learned as a kid—"

"Nah," Hayner cuts him off. "It's hard to shake expectations. You become sure of them, then you don't even remember what you want. Nasty stuff."

"You got that right."

"Am I also right about you being afraid of this place?"

Roxas turns his head to look at his friend. "Who says I'm—?" The excuse stops when Hayner gives him a pointed look. "That obvious? Fine. I was afraid of coming here." Roxas looks back upwards. "It wasn't personal. It's just…the memories. The bad Organization ones before the good fake Twilight Town memories. And then finding out about fake Twilight Town. And you guys. It's kind of weird knowing I knew you all before you knew me, and having you not know me afterwards. It was a shaky start I never could get myself to drop."

"Was it something we did?" Hayner asks bluntly. "We like hanging with you, man. You're our friend. We joked about it sure, but we didn't mean it."

Roxas shakes his head even though his friend can't see it. "It's nothing you guys did, I swear." Roxas pauses. Then, quieter—"I'm sorry for ignoring you all. I was scared."

Hayner waves a hand at the sky then lets it flop onto his stomach. "All is forgiven. Besides after what you went through, I can't blame you. It sounds messy."

"What about you?" Roxas asks, turning the conversation on his friend.

"What about me?"

"What do you want to do? Any life plans? Anything holding you back?"

Hanyer smiles grimly to himself. "Only the fact that there isn't a life plan to hesitate on. Plans are no good. I think they hold you back from following your heart. Like what classes to take in school, and whether or not to ask out Olette."

Roxas sits up upon hearing this. He leans over some, resting his elbows on his knees. "Oh yeah?"

Hayner refuses to look at him.

"If I may put in my opinion," Roxas pauses, waiting for Hayner to reject it, but no such thing occurs, "I'd say go for it—for her, before school even. If you experience anything I've experienced, it will be well worth all the fear and awkward first date, and awkward first hand holding, and awkward first smooch."

Hayner brings a hand up to point a finger directly at Roxas's face. "Shut it."

"You're blushing."

Hayner sits up, clearly showing his reddened cheeks. "I said shut it. You've been warned."

Roxas grins. "Oooo, I'm so scared."

Hayner is about to retaliate when a loud "Hey!" from across the courtyard takes their attention. Pence runs up to them. He pauses to catch his breath before giving the other two a thumbs up.

"Mission accomplished!" he declares proudly. "Flowers have been ordered."

Roxas smiles. "Thanks, Pence. And you too, Hayner. Couldn't have pulled this off without you."

The two young men brush off the thanks.

"It's what friends do," Hayner says.

"Who you should really thank is Olette," Pence says. "She's been trying to keep Kairi busy most of the day now, making sure they are nowhere near where we need to be."

"I wonder how they're doing," Hayner wonders.

Roxas glances up at the color-changing sky. "We'd better go find out. It's getting late."

A girl's day is not something Kairi expected to need but is pleasantly surprised at how therapeutic it feels after having a full morning and half the afternoon talking, laughing, and gossiping with Olette.

It was Olette's request for the girl's day (because, she claimed, she is in desperate need of one, so please, Kairi?). Kairi had checked with Roxas first since it was their original intent to have this vacation together, but he seemed eager for her to have some relax time. Which is the only reason she agreed to it. But it was well worth it. Kairi and Olette chatted while making deliveries all morning to get some extra munny for the trip's supplies.

They stopped delivering letters (a job which gave them ample time to walk together and chat) for lunch around noon. When Kairi had suggested they try to find the guys to see how their supply shopping was going, Olette made a face and quietly, as if embarrassed, asked for some help shopping for a dress. When pressed what for, she admitted she had been wanting to buy one for a while now but just couldn't get herself to finally get it. The reason for the dress is because she thinks Hayner might like it, might look at her different, might give her confidence to maybe ask him out.

With this tidbit of knowledge, Kairi eagerly accompanies Olette through the boutique of her choice, all the while asking details of their will-they-won't-they relationship they've been dancing around all summer. Olette finally settles on a dark red dress, but will only buy it if Kairi buys the yellow one she's looking at. (Kairi did not need much convincing. The different shades of yellow swirling together in a knee-length, off-the-shoulder strap number calls to the princess. Not to mention, it would be fabulous paired with her hair. Kairi doesn't wear yellow often since purple is her favorite color—with pink as a very close second).

"We looked through the whole store, Olette. I guarantee you bought the right dress. Nothing else compared."

Olette fiddles with the handles on the dress's bag. "I know. It's the first dress that's a little more…'look at me'. I'm not used to it."

Kairi squeezes her shoulder reassuringly. It doubles as a way to keep Olette close. The businesses have closed for the afternoon, and people are getting off work. The walkways are busier than usual. "That may be what the dress says, but it says it at just the right volume. He will look."

"Yeah, but—"

"He. Will. Look." Kairi dodges a small group of children sprinting towards the sweets shop.

Olette looks down at the dress bag, smiles, then giggles. "You're right."

"The next step is to find an opportunity to wear—oh, sorry." Kairi turns to the gentleman she accidentally bumped shoulders with.

"You should be."

Kairi shoots a perturbed look the man's way. The passive-aggressive comment on politeness dies on her lips when she sees who it is. "Seifer! Hey!"

"Who thinks they can ta—" Seifer stops talking once he looks her direction.

Kairi isn't as tongue tied. She shuffles through the crowd over to him. After shifting her bags over to one hand, she uses the other to give him a one-armed hug. He doesn't return it. It's awkward, but Kairi is a hugger. Old friends (friends may be a bit strong…acquaintances?) get hugs. "Long time, no see! How are you? How's the hero's quest?"

This seems to break Seifer's stupor. "It's not a hero's quest. What a joke. I went on a warrior's journey. And I succeeded."

Kairi smiles at him. Seifer's frown deepens, and he looks away from her. (His red cheeks don't go unnoticed.) "Glad to hear it. What are you up to now? Where's Rai and Fuu? How's Vivi?"

Hayner crosses his arms. "Not that it's any of your business, I was on my way to meet them. The Disciplinary Committee has had its hands full lately."

"Oh yeah? Nothing you can't handle, I bet. Not after a warrior's journey." Kairi nudges him with her elbow and can't help giggling. She tries to shake it off. (No need to make him feel bad about trying to improve himself.) "But seriously, good for you."

"Um, Kairi." Olette comes up beside the princess. She directs her eyes from Kairi to where they were walking earlier. "Shouldn't we be going? The others are waiting for us."

Kairi knows Olette, along with Hayner and Pence, have a wary truce with Seifer and his gang. It's mainly Hayner and Seifer who butt heads, trying to outdo the other. But Kairi has no such qualms with the self-proclaimed protector of Twilight Town. He's been friendly enough with her in her past visits. No reason to be rude.

"This is a private conversation you're interrupting," Seifer says to the brunette. Olette squints at him.

Kairi quickly interjects. "You're right, Olette. Sorry, I just wanted to catch up a minute. We can head out." She turns to give her farewell to Seifer.

"What brings you to town?" the young man asks hurriedly before she can say goodbye.

Kairi has no problem answering. "Oh, well, Roxas and I finished a mission and decided we needed a vacation. What better place than to see some of his oldest friends?"

Seifer crosses his arms and frowns. "They're not with you? Why are you walking around without protection?"

Kairi can't help laughing again. (Seriously, who else is going to comment on protecting her? Surprisingly, though, it doesn't hold the sting of memory.) "It's ok. Actually, we were just about to meet—"

"It's not safe." Seifer begins walking in the direction the girls were heading towards. By now the crowds have thinned some. The path has become more open. "Well? Let's get going."

"We don't need an escort," Olette huffs. "We are perfectly capable of walking ourselves."

"Please. The two of you? You need something more than a shopping bag to defend yourselves. I'm offering you the best protection the town has to offer. It's stupid to turn it down."

Kairi doesn't want to offend Seifer. Deep down, she knows he means well. But having him run into Hayner, or even Roxas, is not her favorite idea. She steps forward and puts a hand on his arm. "Thank you. Really. That's very sweet of you, but we don't—"

"Kairi! Hey!"

(Well, it seems a meeting was inevitable.)

She leans slightly to look past Seifer and sees her boyfriend along with Hayner and Pence.

Roxas picks up speed on his skateboard. For a brief moment, Kairi thinks he's going to run into Seifer, (Seifer must think so also because Kairi feels him tense beside her) but Roxas skids to a stop in the nick of time. He is…sort of smiling as he looks at Seifer, but Seifer certainly isn't smiling at him. His constant "I'm better than you" expression only amplifies.

"It's been a while," Roxas comments. He maintains eye contact with Seifer even as he gets off his board and kicks it up into his awaiting hand.

Seifer simply crosses his arms. "Roxas."

Kairi glances back to see Olette and Pence doing their best to distract Hayner from no doubt stepping forward and giving Roxas backup. Kairi follows their example and tries stepping in to tear Roxas away from the encounter.

"I'm glad you're here, Roxas." Kairi holds up a bag. "I can't wait to show you what I bought."

To his credit, Roxas does spare her a glance, but Seifer speaking takes his attention right back.

"Didn't think you'd be coming back. What, this place scare you?"

"Nah," Roxas says, just as calmly, but with just as much venom beneath the words. "I've been busy with missions. You know, saving people, doing good. What have you been doing?"

Seifer scoffs. "Protecting the world you're too busy for. Obviously, this place doesn't mean too much to you if you can't even—"

"Seifer finished his warrior's journey," Kairi speaks up. She places a hand on Roxas's arm much like she did with Seifer to try and calm him. Roxas looks her way, and his face softens some. "He's been trying his best to be a protector for the world. He was just offering to escort Olette and myself back to you guys, but you found us first." Kairi turns to Seifer. "You're sweet to offer, but it looks like we're good now. Maybe I'll see you around?"

Seifer barely shrugs. "Maybe. But let me know if you need the Disciplinary Committee to step in. We are still the best around."

Kairi gives him a grateful smile for backing down. "I definitely will. Thanks again."

Then Roxas does something that surprises Kairi. He holds out his hand for Seifer who, after a moment of skeptical glaring, takes it. Roxas nods to him. "Yeah, thanks. I'm glad someone's looking out for my girlfriend when I'm not there."

Kairi would laugh at Seifer's alarmed expression if she didn't feel so sorry for him. Roxas solidifies the point by giving Kairi a quick kiss on the cheek after releasing Seifer's hand.

"Be seeing you, Seifer." With that, Roxas throws an arm around Kairi and they walk away with the others. Kairi barely gets a glance back at Seifer who has already turned to leave.

The group takes their time getting back to The Usual Spot, when Roxas mentions to the group that they haven't called the others to give them an update in a while. Kairi and Roxas break off to go to their rented rooms, agreeing to meet them at the clock tower for the sunset.

They have walked a clock by themselves before Roxas leans down and quietly says. "Sorry."

"For what?" Kairi asks cheekily. "For the display of dominance? For claiming your property?"

"Hey, you know as well as I do, you are anything but property—but yeah. Sorry. I just…I saw when I turned the corner how he was looking at you."

Kairi should be annoyed, she's not. "I'm not mad. It would have been funny if I wasn't afraid you guys would start fighting."

Roxas tugs her closer and places a kiss on her temple. "I'm glad."

"To be honest, I always knew he had a thing for me."

"Oh yeah?"

"The poor guy is pretty obvious if you know the signs. He blushes, he focuses on me in conversations, and he gets louder. That last one he seems to have worked on." Kairi shakes her head but smiles. "I don't return the feelings, clearly, but I didn't want to shun him for liking me."

"Can't blame the guy," Roxas chuckles. "You are pretty great."

"Why thank you. But yeah, he hasn't done anything about it in all the years I've known him so I've let it be, hoping he would get past it. If he ever does bring it up, I'll have to let him down. Of course, you made it fairly clear I am off the market."

"I don't regret it one bit—now that I know you're not mad about it."

The rooms Kairi and Roxas are renting used to be an apartment building. Its layout consists of the rooms' doors being on the side of the building you can access in an alleyway. It's pretty close quarters to the building beside it, but the pathway is lit by several streetlamps commissioned by the owner of the building. The front of the building holds the main office where Roxas and Kairi obtained their keys. It wasn't tourist season so they managed to get rooms next to each other.

Kairi makes a face as Roxas unlocks his room. "Do we have to call the King? We talked to Naminé before we came here. She knows we're ok. And no doubt the King is still busy with the secret mission."

"I know." Roxas grabs Kairi's hand and pulls her into his room. The second the door closes he has his arms around her waist, and she is flush against him. "That was just an excuse to get some alone time with you."

Kairi's surprise disappears quickly as Roxas's lips connect with hers. After a breathless moment, she manages an "Oh thank goodness," and closes the distance again. After all, it has been too long since she last kissed him—and took their sweet time about it.

King Mickey is tired. Unfortunately, it is starting to show. His lovely Queen stopped him just before he headed to the meeting. He tried his best to calm her concern, but he was having trouble calming his own concern. The largest threat since the chaos is out there, hunting, and they have no idea who or where. His best people are out there giving their time and safety for this mission, and they are no closer to answers. It has been weeks. Fruitless searches, false alarms, rampant disappointment.

So yes, the King is tired. Which is why he called this meeting. Ven, Terra, and Aqua are here via video call since they are too far to get here in time, but he does have Lea, Xion, Sora, Donald, Goofy, and Riku here. Naminé waits safely in her room, the King ordered it. Can't have her in danger simply from overhearing something she shouldn't. He learned that lesson when Roxas eavesdropped on his and Kairi's conversation earlier.

"Well, I suppose there is no avoiding it. We have no leads." The King's declaration quiets the room. "I know it seems hopeless, but that's exactly what this heartless wants—hopelessness. It won't get it from us. It's everyone else we need to worry about."

"So what do we do now, your majesty?" Xion asks.

"Because it seems like we've looked everywhere," Lea adds.

Riku sighs. "I don't think I've logged in this many travel hours in one mission ever."

"And I thank you for your time—all of you. What you're sacrificing is more than I can ask. I promise you all, once this threat is eliminated, you all will receive an extended vacation." King Mickey will make sure of this. These kids deserve normalcy. He just wishes he could give it to them more completely.

Sora, Donald, and Goofy show the most enthusiasm to this, with Goofy and Sora even exchanging a high-five over Donald's head. (Oh how the King hopes they keep up their morale as well as they have been. It's the only thing keeping them safe.)

"I've spoken to Master Yen Sid. He is certain the monster has focused in on a target and is waiting to strike when the target is at its lowest," the King continues. "This means we may have missed a sign or a clue to someone's fear or sadness. Even uncertainty could be a clue. I need you all to think back—was there anybody with any of these emotions. It has to be more than a passing feeling. Who was having trouble in their lives? Who was struggling? "

"And you're sure the heartless isn't going after villains?" Riku asks.

"Positive," the King confirms. "The brighter the light, the greater the target. It's looking to take the light's power for its own before smothering it."

"Then that leaves out any of my leads."

"Mine too," Lea says. "Nothing but minor heartless here and there around Pete. That guy really should look into a different career."

"Ven, Terra, Aqua—thoughts?" The King glances to his left at the screen display.

"Sorry, your highness. We're all the way in the Kingdom of Corona, and, like its princess, nothing but sunshine," Ven informs the group.

"We even stopped over in the Keyblade Graveyard in case it felt like visiting where so many have fallen. Not a trace," Terra says.

The King tries not to feel too disparaged. "Aqua, what about in Radiant Garden? You visited with Naminé."

Aqua's smile says it all. "Kairi is thriving there, your majesty."

Sora brightens. "Really? That's great!"

"Are you certain? She has struggled in the past," the King questions.

"I was as surprised as you are, but she is nothing but smiles. Roxas too."

Xion giggles. "Is that so? I'm happy to hear it. He hasn't been smiling too much lately."

Lea leans back with a smirk. "Perchance the princess is doing him some good."

Aqua continues. "Naminé can vouch for me. She saw it as well. They certainly are a happy pair. While I was there, I didn't sense anything foreboding. I think we can safely rule out Radiant Garden."

The King nods. "I'm glad to hear it. Then we should bring Roxas and Kairi into our mission. I wanted to wait until Kairi finished her visits. Now that she's done, I can ask her more thoroughly about her time with the others. She might be able to give some details of the worlds we haven't visited."

"Did their reports to you mention anything suspicious?" Terra asks.

"The only disturbance they reported was a few heartless in Agrabah." The King turns to Lea and Xion. "You visited there before your mission officially started. Did you see anything out of the ordinary?"

"Nah." Lea shifts so he is leaning back in his chair. "Nothing but a bustling merchant shop and a few cranky shoppers."

"Nevertheless, I'd like you and Xion to visit again, just in case."

"Will do," Xion says.

"Good. Now the matter of getting Kairi and Roxas—"

"I'll get them!"

The King can't help smiling when he sees Sora stand with his hand raised. Of course he volunteers. (What he fails to see is Riku's frown.)

"Very well, Sora. Once you've rested some, I'll allow you to go fetch Roxas and Kairi."

"You won't find them in Radiant Garden," Riku says.

King Mickey doesn't like the surprise this gives him. "What do you mean?"

"Naminé told me before the meeting they left a few days ago to visit Twilight Town. Kairi had called her to chat around that time."

King Mickey really can't handle being surprised right now. He needs to know where his team is at all times and when they plan on changing course. Now is not the time to do what they please! But the King takes a breath. They aren't technically on the mission. They don't know what's going on, and, therefore, didn't know the danger that may await them wherever they go.

"Very well," he finally says. "Sora, you may head to Twilight Town after you've rested."

"I can go tonight," he offers.

"No. The more tired you are, the more susceptible you are to negativity, leading to you being more susceptible to darkness. I'm grounding you for a minimum of twenty-four hours. Am I clear?"

Sora slouches back into his seat. He crosses his arms and pouts. "Yes, sir."

"Good. The new orders I have for you is to reexamine what worlds you have visited and the people you have come in contact with. Once you have done so, revisit those worlds and those people to double check. We might have missed something. Does anyone have anything else to add?"

Silence.

"Alright then. Don't forget to keep in contact. Dismissed."

Roxas favorite moment of the beach day was not anything on the beach. It was during the trip back.

They were on the train heading back. The sun had just set so the setting was fairly dark with only four small lights illuminating the train car. Olette, Hayner, and Pence were on one side, too tired to do much more than smile occasionally with one another before resting their eyes again. No one speaks. Roxas and Kairi sat opposite. Roxas was leaning back in his seat. Beside him Kairi was fast asleep, head on his shoulder, the rest of her curled up nicely beside him. She smelled like the beach, a smell he has grown rather fond of, almost as much as her normal flowery scent.

It was a moment of pure peace. The exhaustion the group felt hadn't been painful or detrimental like he would feel after a particularly difficult mission. No, this exhaustion was the product of a day well spent.

It had been a great day. With beach expert Kairi in their midst, there were few activities they didn't manage to do. After finding a spot to set their gear, they got their feet wet in the water, getting used to the eb and flow of the waves. They had a chicken fight—Kairi on Roxas's shoulders and Olette on Hayner's, both ready to knock the other young lady off, and Pence was the referee. (Roxas and Kairi won, of course, but made sure not to do any actual damage to their friends.)

Once out of the water, they played frisbee, beach volleyball, had a picknick, made a sandcastle, buried Pence in the sand (he had to rinse off in the ocean because he claimed sand was in "too many places!"), and then just laid out on their towels getting some sun after they've worn themselves out. The group did manage to make a small bonfire with some other beachgoers.

As the sun set, the glow of the fire had grown stronger. Roxas had glanced at Kairi. Her eyes met his, and it was as if he was shot back in time to their last bonfire together. A group of friends, the glow of a fire, dreamy sleepiness after a big day—it was magical. And the look Roxas recognized in her eyes cast the same spell they did before. Only this time was different. They weren't just observers, wondering what the other was thinking.

They had each other. They knew what is in their hearts.

And when Roxas leaned forward and kissed her, he deemed it to be one of the best moments in his life.

That may have been the best moment of the day, but it wasn't quite his favorite. The reason Kairi leaning against him on the train was such a special time for him was because he felt like she had full reliance on him. Here they were, far from their responsibilities or danger or anxieties, and she still goes to him for comfort and a strong shoulder.

Roxas doesn't think he can be happier with his life than what it is offering right now.

Riku frowns at the door before him. Sighing, he gives a brief knock.

"Come in!"

Riku finds Sora trying to sort through the artifacts he has gathered from his last mission. Rings and bracelets are strewn among clothes, munny, and games.

"Hey Riku," Sora greets. He tosses him a ring. "Do you have this one yet? I've got two."

Inspecting the turquoise trinket, Riku tosses it back just as fast. "Yep. Already upgraded it too."

Sora shrugs. "Ah well, I'll just have to sell it. We haven't had much time for that sort of thing on this mission. Donald and Goofy and I haven't stopped moving since the King sent us off."

Riku closes the door and enters a little further. He leans against one the chairs—at least he thinks it's a chair—smothered underneath clothing. "Doing some organizing?"

"Yeah," Sora grumbles. "At least a bit before heading out again. I don't want to be buried in the gummy ship when I go out again. Chip and Dale weren't too happy when they saw the ship's interior."

"It's been a long mission. They can't expect it to be that tidy."

"Exactly!"

"But then again, you've never been the neatest person."

"Hey!"

Riku grins as he catches the shoe thrown his way.

"So did you actually want something or did you just come in here to poke fun of my attempts at being a good organizer—which, by the way, you're not too good at yourself."

Riku's forces his grin to stay. "Just came to see how you're doing." A pause. "When do you think you'll be able to go out again?"

Sora heaves a big sigh and rolls his eyes. "The King is making me wait until tomorrow midday to leave. Can you believe it? I won't be able to get there until evening."

"Well, rest is important against this heartless. We can't take chances."

Sora flops down onto the chair opposite the one Riku is leaning against. "Yeah, yeah. I've heard it all before. It's just…"

"You want to see Kairi."

"Yeah."

It burns Riku to see the sadness in his best friend's eyes.

"Hey, you saw her on her princess journey. How is she doing?"

Riku's mind flashes with the memory of his and Kairi's fight. (The defiance in her eyes. The independence declared in her posture. The accusatory words striking true in Riku's heart.)

"She's…"

Sora immediately notices the hesitation. He leans forward. "What happened? What's wrong? Do I need to go now to get her?"

"What? No! No, she's fine. She's safe, Sora. Naminé even told me so, and she's the one who saw her most recently over video feed."

Sora leans back in his chair and lets out a big breath. "You scared me. Don't do that." He tilts his head. "But why did you hesitate? What's wrong?"

Riku chews on his words before speaking them (not wanting to let them go at all, but he must). "Do you…Sora, do you think we have been unfair to her?"

"Unfair? What do you mean?"

"We keep leaving her behind."

Sora's face crinkles, showing his confusion. "What? She had her trip to take. She wasn't 'left behind'. And we had our mission, which we are getting her for tomorrow."

"No, Sora, think about it. This isn't just about this mission." Riku sits in the clothes covered seat opposite Sora. He folds his hands together. "When I went to fix the gummy ship, she and I had a talk while Roxas was off getting Alice. She's—Sora, she's hurt. Really hurt."

Riku's tone immediately penetrates through Sora. All liveliness dissipates. "But…I talked with her before I left. She seemed fine."

"I never got to say goodbye to her. She let the King tell me instead. She wouldn't have done so normally. She's hurt, Sora. And mad. I think that's partially why she wouldn't wait for either of us to escort her on the trip. It's a punishment."

"She seemed fine!" Sora insists. "When I said goodbye, I said, 'I'll miss you' and she said 'I'll miss you too' and she smiled and hugged me and I went on my way."

Riku is shaking his head before Sora finishes speaking. "No, Sora, really think about it. Did she really smile? Was she happy? Did she talk about when we would next see each other and what we would do? Did she practically hang on you like she usually does when we are meant to be separated?"

"She—"

"Think before answering."

Sora stops. He thinks.

And there he is back in the hanger, saying goodbye. The details resurface. The hug that wasn't as tight as usual. The smile that didn't reach her eyes. The distance between them just a little more than usual. Kairi side-stepping him when he tries to put his arm around her, claiming she has some packing she should really get to.

(The hurt in her eyes when he tells her no, she can't come on this one. His orders and the King's. He needs her safe because he needs her.)

By the look on Sora's face, Riku knows he understands his meaning.

"She doesn't think we will be able to be together forever," Riku continues. "I'm not talking about our hearts being connected. I'm talking about actually seeing one another. You know the King wants her at Radiant Garden. And he wants us basically everywhere else. Her original home was Radiant Garden, and ours is Destiny Islands. She thinks she is being exiled there without the promise of being involved in our lives anymore. And what have we done to convince her otherwise besides giving her general promises? Never specifics of how we will be together."

Sora's face is unreadable as he stares at the floor. "We've…we've done that a lot lately, haven't we? The only time we are really together isn't on missions or during down time, it's during school time. We're always busy." Sora buries his face in his hands. "Why didn't I see it before? We're driving her away!"

"We are."

Sora leaps to his feet, startling his friend. "Not anymore! She is coming with us for every mission from now on. Starting with this one."

"Sora—"

"She's not helpless. But even so, we can keep an eye on her and train with her as we go. The best way of making sure she's ok isn't to stuff her into some castle, it's to keep her by our side. We've been going about this all wrong."

("No, you trust that I will be the delicate princess and childhood friend that will always need her boys by her side to save her. Well, I don't need you and Sora. I love you guys, I really, really do, but you're not acknowledging the fact that I'm your equal. That I'm growing up. I'm trying not to let that mean growing away.")

Sora's word dig up the princess's words thrown at Riku during their argument in Wonderland. He now realizes even more of what she means.

"Sora, I don't think—"

"We will all be together again. Just like old times. And we can sit by the paopu tree, watch the sunset, and share a paopu fruit like we always talked about."

The hope on Sora's face physically hurts Riku. It forces him to speak.

"Sora, we have to keep in mind things might not go back to the way they were when we were kids. People grow up. Kairi might actually end up living away from us."

Riku thought Sora would be more put-out upon hearing this, but he laughs. "Even if Kairi lives in Radiant Garden, it doesn't mean that we can't. I liked staying there. Kairi's making it into a beautiful place again. We can help. We won't grow apart. We just have to adapt."

Riku leans back in his chair, bewildered by his friend's optimism. He wants to believe it, he wants to picture the three of them together (four—of course with Naminé there beside him as well), going between Radiant Garden and Destiny Islands, never separating. But…

"Sora, can I ask you something?"

"What's up?"

Riku decides to dive in and just ask. "Do you still having feelings for Kairi?"

They have talked around the subject before, like when Riku and Naminé started dating. Riku saw the envy in Sora's eyes—not to have Naminé, no, but to have a relationship, that closeness, with someone. Riku had tried then to encourage him to ask out Kairi. They had gone to Radiant Garden soon after. Riku was certain Sora was going to make a move, but then he didn't. And Kairi didn't seem too eager to accept anything, let alone a romance. She was miserable then.

(Riku kicks himself for not being more sympathetic to her then. He had mistakenly thought it was only nerves.)

Sora blinks. "Wow. Uh…" He scratches the back of his head, and his cheeks grow pink. "Um, is it obvious? Does everybody know?"

"It was pretty obvious when we were all at Radiant Garden that one summer. You walked around with her like you were the future king of the place. I just wanted to know if you still hold hope for the two of you to be together."

Sora gives a short laugh. "I have more than hope. I know we're meant to be together. It's just a feeling, you know? Like what you and Naminé have. Once I apologize about leaving her behind and make it clear I'm here for her, I think we could…yeah."

"What stopped you from asking her earlier? Why didn't you share a paopu fruit with her when we were all together?"

Sora shrugs. "It didn't seem pressing. We didn't need a romantic relationship. We had a relationship—a friendship. A deep friendship. I didn't want to push her into more. And now I'm glad I didn't, not while she thinks I would abandon her. I'll talk to her the minute this heartless is out of the way. It's time to move forward. Thanks for helping me see that, Riku."

With his renewed vigor, Sora's beaming yet bashful face seems unbreakable.

(With Kairi's defense of Roxas back in Wonderland still in his mind and Naminé's recent information of how Roxas has been good for Kairi during their trip, Riku wonder's if Sora's feelings for her is enough to win her over.)

(Or if he has missed his chance.)

Roxas should not be nervous. Yet here he is, standing outside Kairi's apartment door, fidgeting ceaselessly with the flower bouquet he has, trying to convince himself to knock on her door. He said he would be by to pick her up for their first official date and to be ready at this exact time.

(No, their trip through Radiant Garden did not count. Yes, they may have danced and had a grand old time, but Roxas has a full date planned. It's a spectacular date he wants to count as the first date.)

(At least he hopes it will be spectacular.)

(He should really knock.)

Three short knocks and the door opens wide. Kairi stands there in all her radiance. Almost literally—with that yellow sundress and the bright smile she's got, Roxas is struck.

"Hi," Kairi says. She fiddles with the door handle.

"Hi," Roxas echoes. Wow…she looks incredible (…he should tell her that!) "You look incredible."

Kairi dips her head modestly. "You think so? Yellow's not really my color, but Olette claimed it was my kind of yellow."

"She's right."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah, absolutely." She is the perfect combo of looking ready for a night out without appearing too made up. Even better than some of the dresses she wore back in Radiant Garden.

Kairi steps forward and gives him a quick kiss. "Thank you. Knowing you like it makes me feel better about it." She steps back again and gives him a critical look. "But look at you, Roxas. Have you seen how amazing you look?"

(Part One of Date Plan: New Clothes)

Roxas takes his other hand, the one not holding the flowers (Part Two: Flowers), out of his pocket and holds it out a little to showcase himself. At Kairi's gesture, he makes a complete turn. He is now super happy he decided to buy a new outfit. Nicer jeans, a black button up top, and shoes to match. (Because he was nervous, he's a little warm in it already and has rolled up the sleeves some.)

"Seriously, Roxas, you look great in that." Kairi bites her lip and tilts her head.

Roxas knows he's blushing, and he doesn't mind at all. "Thanks. These are for you." He holds out the bouquet.

Kairi eagerly takes it and inhales their scent. "You're so sweet. These are beautiful, thank you! I love them."

"Hang on." Roxas takes one of the flowers and places it in Kairi's hair. She has pulled it up for tonight. It is perfectly placed. A yellow blossom in her red hair. "There. Perfect."

The look Kairi gives him is a little overwhelming, but it's a good overwhelming. She leans forward and kisses him. Roxas is sorely tempted to pull her back into her apartment for a private date rather than the public one he worked so hard to plan—

"Thank you, Roxas," Kairi says almost reverently. Then her smile brightens into the more familiar one. She takes him with her to put the flowers in some water in her apartment. (Not for another hot make out session on her couch, unfortunately. Roxas had kind of hoped she had read his mind. Oh well, plenty of time for that later.) "If I ask nicely, would you wear that outfit more often?"

Roxas chuckles and shakes his head. He grabs her hand and tugs her forward a little. "Have you figured it out? Anything you ask of me, you get."

Kairi giggles. "I had a suspicion. I promise not to abuse this power."

"I know you won't."

Roxas's nerves are gone, he realizes. He's ready to give his girlfriend an amazing date to show her just how amazing she is to him.

"Well, your highness," Roxas holds out his elbow, "shall we?"

Kairi eagerly takes it. "We shall."

The first stop on this date is the movies (Part Three: Entertainment). Today, instead of a full-length movie, the outdoor theater is playing a series of short films, mostly cartoons and comedies. They are considered classics. The people putting on this particular show picked ones that aged well. They have Kairi and Roxas laughing most of the time.

The only hiccup was when Kairi asked if they could get some snacks. Roxas bought the smallest popcorn possible and a small drink, giving her the vague phrase of, "Don't want to ruin the rest of the date," while handing it over. (He may have "accidentally" dropped a few kernels on his way back to their seats.)

After a couple hours, Roxas checks the time and informs Kairi they better get going to their next destination.

"So where is the next destination, Roxas?" Kairi asks cheerily. She is particularly bouncy as they walk arm in arm.

"You'll see. No hints." Kairi pouts (an action Roxas can't resist kissing off her lips). "Only a little farther."

It really is just a few more blocks before they come to a clearing where their objective is clearly shown. (Part Four: Dinner at the Best Restaurant)

"The Bistro? I should have known!"

Roxas smiles at Kairi's delight. "I was hoping you'd like it."

They approach the host where he stands behind his podium. He greets them with a grand smile. "Good evening! How might I be of service?"

"A reservation for two at seven for Roxas."

The host glances down at his paperwork. "Ah yes. You wished for outdoor seating. Right this way please."

The gentleman brings to a table a little way from the bistro entrance. A few other couples agreed it is a pleasant night for outdoor dining so Roxas and Kairi are not the only ones outside. It is a rather beautiful night with the sun starting to set and a few stars just now peeking out. As an extra treat to the atmosphere, a violinist meanders about, playing lightly in the background.

When they reach their table, Roxas is quick to be the one to pull out Kairi's chair. The host nods his approval. Once Roxas takes his seat, they are given their menus and informed their server will be with them shortly.

"What do you think so far?" Roxas asks.

"Roxas—this is awesome!" Kairi giggles. "Sorry, that's probably not the most ladylike thing to say."

"No, but it's very you."

He loves her blush. He loves that he can make it appear.

"I've only been here once and have always wanted to get back here," Kairi says. "I have a goal to try all of the food on the menu."

"I'm happy to help you with your goal." Roxas glances at his menu. "What did you have last time?"

"I had the ratatouille. With Remy as the chef and that being his signature dish, how could I not? What about you?"

"I had the beef bourguignon. It was pretty great."

"There's plenty left on the menu. What shall we get this time?"

"Pick anything. I'm paying. And don't even think about skipping out on dessert."

Kairi laughs. "No wonder you didn't want me to eat too much at the movies."

Their server comes by around this time and takes their drink orders, allowing them a few more minutes to discuss entre options. Kairi and Roxas use this time to chat about…well, everything. They find themselves falling into the easy pattern of chatting lightly about whatever comes to mind. They continue this after they order, expertly avoiding anything regarding responsibilities or uncertainties and enjoy the simplicity of reminiscing about their beach day yesterday or laughing about the pictures that will come out of the camera.

"That reminds me!" Kairi twists in her chair to dig through her purse hanging off the top of the chair. She pulls out the disposable camera. "I can't believe I forgot it. I brought the camera to photograph our 'official' date." Kairi sets it for the next picture then holds it up. Roxas holds up his hand in return.

"Not yet! No, I want a picture with you. If this is going to capture our date, it's got have both of us in it."

Kairi lowers the camera. She sets it on the table. "You make an excellent point. I'll wait, but don't let me forget we need one."

"You got it."

It's perfect timing as their food arrives in that moment. The two eagerly dig in, unable to resist the aromas coming from their plates. It's quiet a moment as the two appreciate their first few bites of their meal. When the server comes by after a while, the couple requests their compliments be sent to the chef.

"Remy has done it again," Kairi says as the waiter walks back to the kitchen to pass along the compliments. "How is your eel matelote?"

"Surprisingly, very good. I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I shouldn't have doubted the little chef. He has some big skills with flavors. How about you?"

"I don't know what Remy stuffed the quail with, but it was the right stuff."

Roxas leans back in his chair a bit and heaves a happy sigh. "I haven't been this content after a meal in a while."

"I'm with you there," Kairi agrees.

"Excuse me, sir, miss." The waiter has returned and places a dish in the center of the table beside the candle and single rose. "Chef Remy appreciates your love for his food and send this dessert as a token. It is a fresh fruit compote. Enjoy!"

Roxas and Kairi look at the dessert then at one another. Grins spread across their faces.

"Free dessert. This is a great date!" Kairi picks up her fork and takes some of the fruit.

Roxas does the same. "Ready?"

Kairi nods. The two take a bite at the same time, savoring the taste on their tongues. It's the perfect marriage of tart and sweet, and just the freshness they need after a savory meal. They take their time enjoying the treat. It isn't until the last bite their utensils are put down.

Kairi interlocks her fingers and places her chin on them, resting her elbows on the table. The contentment on her face is one mirrored on Roxas's. Her princess smile shows clearly in the candlelight (married perfectly with the half-lidded expression he saw ages ago on the beach). Roxas is entranced. "You know, this visit is far better than the first time I was here. Sure, the food is phenomenal, but the company really makes it fantastic."

Roxas leans forward onto the table as well. Instead of shying away from the look Kairi is giving him, he embraces it. (A giant leap from the beginning of their relationship. Roxas is proud of them both.) "I'd says so. No one has better company than I do."

Kairi leans forward and Roxas catches the hint. He meets her halfway for a kiss over the table. When they part. Roxas takes a deep breath and proceeds with Part Five of his date plan. (The Gift)

"You know, Kairi, I'm so—I haven't been this happy in my life ever." Roxas takes another breath. He wants to make sure this comes out right. "You made it possible. You are the reason I've been this way. You—You're the most amazing person in my life, the most amazing person ever. And—And I want to show you how much you mean to me. You make me feel special, and I want to make you feel special too."

Roxas digs in his pocket. Kairi face shows her confusion until it spreads out in surprise when he holds out a small box to her.

"Kairi, you're the best person in my life."

Kairi looks from him to the box a couple times before releasing a breathy laugh. She takes the box. Opening it, her breathing staggers a moment as she chokes up over what she sees.

"Oh Roxas," Kairi near whispers. "Roxas, it's beautiful."

Inside the box is the ruby Roxas received in the mines, but it isn't the same. The jeweler worked wonders. There on the velvet bed sits a heart shaped ruby—not too big, not too small—hanging from a gold chain.

"How—it's so—"

"Let me put it on," Roxas says before even a hint of protest crosses her lips. The two stand, and Roxas makes quick work of the tiny clasp. There it sits perfectly around her neck, a perfect contrast to the yellow of her dress and a compliment to her hair color. "Do you like it?"

"Do I like it?!" Kairi throws her arms around Roxas and kisses him. "No one has ever given me anything so nice! I'm usually the one giving gifts."

Roxas laughs. "Good! I'm glad I'm the first." When Kairi pulls back some, he gives the full explanation. "I got it in the mines of the Dwarfs' woods. It was when Dopey and I went to fetch the others. I saw it in the cave wall and picked it up to admire it. I swear I wasn't stealing it, no matter what Grumpy says. Dopey gave it to me when we were walking back without the others knowing." Roxas's eyes trail to where the heart sits perfectly around his princess's neck. "It…reminded me of you. I knew it could be something special. I just wasn't sure how until now."

Kairi looks ready to cry. "Roxas…"

"Hang on, the date isn't done yet!"

Roxas takes Kairi's hand and leads her to the center of the outdoor seating area. (Part Six: Dancing) The tables themselves are closer to the actual building, so the rest of the area is open. Roxas gives a nod to the violinist before pulling Kairi close. He holds her hand in both of his.

"May I have this dance, lovely madam?" he asks.

Kairi can't help the laugh that escapes her. "Why yes you may, dear sir."

With the swirling melody glidingly elegantly through the air, Roxas and Kairi begin the movements now so familiar to them. He guides her by the small of her back with one hand and holds her hand in the other. He feels the warmth of her other hand on his shoulder. These places of contact feel warmer. The two move with familiarity. Such a beautiful dance from two people enjoying each other so much, other get up to dance as well. Soon enough, the open area is full of couples enjoying a slow dance.

But Kairi and Roxas hardly notice. Too invested in one another, their hearts feel a connection long craved for. The relief and unwavering comfort upon finding it brings Roxas to pull Kairi even closer. Kairi's perfect violet eyes trap him, and he never wants to be released. They're close enough Roxas wouldn't have to move much to kiss her.

He doesn't kiss her.

Instead—

"Kairi, I love you."

There is no surprise on her face this time. Only love.

"Roxas, I love you too."

Roxas leans forward until his forehead rests against hers. The two close their eyes and enjoy the moment. Neither realizes they have stopped dancing.

(Part Seven: Speak the Truth)

(Parts One through Seven—successful)

The rest of the night is like walking through a dream. After tipping the violinist and having the waiter take a picture of them, Kairi and Roxas make their way back to their apartments. It is late, and the streets are fairly empty. Only a few people linger. Seifer and his gang being a few. But they are a ways away. However, Seifer does make eye contact with Roxas. He sees Kairi on his arm with her head resting on his shoulder.

Seifer nods to Roxas. Roxas nods back. Then Seifer and his gang disappear around the corner.

Roxas and Kairi make it to their building. The second they are in the alleyway, they immediately are drawn to one another. They kiss and laugh and kiss and hold each other. Roxas's heart is so light he can't help but throw his arms around her and spin her.

"Roxas!" Kairi exclaims, laughing all the while.

"I love you!" he exclaims back.

"I love you too!"

Back on her feet, Kairi grabs the collar of his shirt to pull him in for another kiss. It's quick kisses now, with an "I love you" thrown in between each one. Roxas returns the love by nuzzling against her neck and behind her ear which causes her to laugh.

Then they are simply holding one another to catch their breath.

After a moment of silence there in the half-lit alleyway in front of Kairi's door, they have the terrible realization they will be parting ways for the night.

Kairi snuggles in closer against Roxas's chest. "You know, I've never been happier."

"Me neither."

"And I've never loved anyone as much as I've loved you."

"Me neither."

Kairi pulls back to face her boyfriend. "Yeah?"

"Yeah."

"That doesn't scare you—what I said?"

Roxas shakes his head. "Not one bit. Actually, I'm happy you feel that because then I won't scare you with how much I care about you."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

Roxas again leans his forehead against hers, but this time, he frowns. "We have to go to bed."

"Yes, we do."

Roxas takes a step back and puts on a smile. He takes her hand. "Well then, Miss Kairi, I bid you goodnight, and will be counting down the minutes until I can see you again."

"You're such a romantic. I love that."

Roxas's smile turns into a grin. "I shall part from you with a single kiss. The perfect kiss."

"Ooo, the perfect kiss. By all means, please continue."

Roxas leans in slowly and takes his time until their lips slowly rest against one another. It's a lingering kiss, savored deeply before parting.

When Roxas pulls back, Kairi's eyes are still closed, when they open, he swears they have stars in them.

"Goodnight, Kairi," he says quietly.

"Goodnight, Roxas."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

The two keep eye contact as long as they can before Kairi finally (slowly, reluctantly) closes her door.

Roxas stands there. He stares at her closed door, willing it to open so he can grab Kairi and spend the rest of his life kissing her and holding her and never separating from her. When he forces himself to move, he stretches out his arms then brings them up, spreading his fingers as if to grab the stars themselves. When he drobs his arms back to his sides, his chest still feels full of air, his heart full of love, and his mind full of her.

He shoves his hands in his pockets and knows he is going to sleep amazingly well tonight. His smile feels permanent on his face.

Roxas turns towards his door. He takes out his keys. Just as he is about to unlock his door, something moves out of the corner of his eye. His body reflexively tenses, ready for a threat. A figure stands at the end of the alleyway, just far enough away to be unidentifiable…Roxas wants to pull out his keyblade until—

—the figure steps into the streetlight.

"Sora."
