Chapter Fifty Five: The Queen's Croquet Ground.

"Hatter?"

The little girl peeked out of the bedroom, staring into the workroom of many hats. It was oddly quiet, which was unusual this time of day. The hatter's incessant mumblings would normally be echoing the room as he frantically made his hats. However, the room was quite silent. So silent that Alison became quite nervous over it. Where could he have gone? It was not yet Market Day. Tiptoeing out of the room, the girl straightened her powder blue dress as she looked around the room. Hats were piled high everywhere, casting shadows on the ground.

But where was Hatter?

There was a clatter of china from another room, making the girl brighten.

"Hatter!" the girl said happily as she raced towards the door…

Only to find more than just the Hatter waiting on the other side.

"Who's this!?" the Knave of Hearts said indignantly. The Hatter was sitting at the table with a woman dressed in a splendid gown, her face covered by a veil. There were guards surrounding them as the Knave glared superiorly in the girl's direction. The girl was quite frightened as the Hatter fiddled with his hat nervously. The girl shrunk away, kneeling to the ground as she did so. There was something truly terrifying about them.

"A commoner!" the Knave snapped, "Who dares to interrupt the tea of the Queen?! Guards!"

The girl bowed her head, her insides trembling as she thought of her title. The Queen… oh gods she had done it now. The girl closed her eyes as she waited for the soldiers to grab her. However a clear firm voice interrupted.

"I do not believe I asked you to do anything Knave."

There was a tint of relief as the girl recognized the merciful action. However, the girl still refused to stand as she remained in a crouched position.

"Look at me, child."

The command in her voice made the girl compelled to look up. The veil had now gone from her face, revealing a woman. She was not young, but she was far from unbeautiful. Her brown hair was done up nicely as loose curls fell down gracefully. Her lips were red and her eyes a piercing brown and she held a trace of a frown upon her face. The girl suddenly felt very uncomfortable, wearing only a simple blue dress and her hair in a knotty frizz.

She wasn't dressed properly enough, she knew that. However the Queen did not seem to mind. In fact, a smile played about her lips as she said, "Curious… I did not know you had children Hatter."

The Hatter winced at her statement, a strange expression overtaking his face. The girl could not make sense of it as she watched him say, "Of course not! The child is much too particular to be mine. She is a friend."

"A friend," The Queen repeated before turning her sharp brown eyes back to the girl. The Queen smiled more fully as she said, "Child come here to me."

The girl stood up, timidly walking over to her. The Knave at this point had backed away, but still held a great look of distaste on his face. The Queen seemed to not care as she reached out to take the girl's little hands asking, "What is your name child?"

"I-I don't have one Your Majesty," the child whispered softly. The Queen tutted and said sympathetically, "Of course not, everyone has a name. Now let me see…"

The Queen closed her eyes, holding onto the young girls hands firmly. The girl watched her curiously as the breeze blew gracefully around her, even though they were inside. The Hatter's eyes darted between staring at the Queen and staring at his young friend. The Queen finally opened her eyes, looking triumphant.

"Alice," Cora said, "I sense that you shall be Alice Little."

The child's eyes looked excited, looking over at Hatter for confirmation. The Hatter nodded slowly but did not say a word. The Queen said, "Since you now have your name… I insist that you attend my Croquet Game in my gardens. It is quite amusing, I promise."

Alice's eyes lit up once again, looking at Hatter eagerly. He gave a little nod of his head as Alice turned back to the Queen. Removing her hands from the Queen's soft ones, Alice curtsied saying politely, "I would be very glad to come, Majesty."

"Cora," the woman said sweetly, "Queen Cora."

Alison jolted from her bed.

The sun had once again not risen, still hiding behind a world that stretched beyond. But Alison could barely pay attention to it, for she was sweating and feeling quite hurt from the dream that plagued her. Tears threatened to burst forth at the thought of it, and Alison could take no more.

Alison quickly and quietly fled her room, going towards the bathroom that was farthest from the sleeping people. It required running up another set of stairs, but she did not care. Slipping into the bathroom, Alison locked the door tight. Flipping on the cold water, Alison nearly jumped inside. She flinched and whimpered at the cold water, but stood under it all the same. She would not feel this way, she would not allow those memories to degrade her another minute.

It was the one thing she hated. She could very well not barge into either bedroom, and there was no Kathryn to comfort her. Letting the shower soak her skin, Alison tried to banish all thoughts of the Queen from her mind. Her clothes now dripping from the cold water, Alison leaned up against the wall of the bathroom wearily.

So many people might consider her insane, getting all worked up over dreams of a Queen that spoke kind words. However, Alison burned at the thought of her deceit. No one liked being tricked and Alison was no exception. Letting out a shaky sigh, Alison turned off the water and stood in the shower a moment longer.

Shedding her clothes for a robe, Alison quietly crept back into her room to lay her soaked pajamas on the hamper in the closet. Closing the door, Alison crept over to the tall dresser. Pulling out some new ones, she hastily changed before hanging the robe on her desk chair. Shaking out her hair, Alison grabbed a brush. Wincing as she hit a bad knot, Alison stared at the mirror in wonder.

There hadn't been any contact from Neverland. No Tink, no Peter, and definitely no Dad. Her heart felt a pain shoot through it, thinking of a man she feared she was never going to see again. It wouldn't be surprising if she didn't, after all he was condemned to an eternity on that Island. Shaking her head, Alison turned away from the mirror to try and banish the thoughts that were forming again.

There was a thump.

Alison froze before hastily dashing into the bed, hiding beneath the covers. She listened as the thump became footsteps and soon her bedroom door opened. There was a sigh as the person walked into the room. Closing her eyes, Alison listened as the person came over to the bed. She couldn't tell who it was, as her back was to them. But her question was soon answered as the person said with a sigh, "Again?"

Gold sat down on the bed, reached out to touch her wet hair. Clenching his jaw tight, Gold waved his hand over her chestnut brown locks, appreciating the golden hues within. Her hair dried as he did so, and she couldn't help but smile as a warm breeze hit her neck. Leaning over, Gold kissed her cheek and whispered, "Sleep better."

Avenant listened.

The sun shined into the windows as the girl played the violin, her concentration not faltering. Mrs. Potters had wandered in with a cup of coffee for Avenant as she held a cup of tea in her own. She now looked on from behind the desk, listening to the young girl play. The piece was the solo in Scheherazade's First movement, played beautifully and elegantly. Avenant sat with his leg propped up, his fingers at his lips as he watched. The music was touching and romantic, making Mrs. Potters watch with a deep trance. The last note came to its height as Alison let it fade simply. Relaxing, Alison looked over at Avenant to see him nodding slightly as Mrs. Potters clapped enthusiastically.

"Wonderful, absolutely wonderful," she cried as Alison nodded at her politely. Avenant said nothing of praise but stood up saying, "Could you please sit at the piano bench over there?"

He pointed over to the brown piano in center of the room. Alison blinked before putting the violin back into its case. Locking it up, she then walked over to the piano and sat down. There was music in front of her, not terribly difficult music, however it was on an instrument she hadn't played in a long while. At least, not seriously. Alison looked over at him in confirmation as Avenant said smoothly, "Play."

"Avenant surely-!" Mrs. Potters said, staring down at him clearly bothered. Avenant shushed her and waved his hand for Alison to play. Staring back at the music, Alison began to play.

It was not nearly as perfect as her violin playing, which in fact made her stomach in complete knots. However, she was determined to not stop until she had completed all the same. As she fell into a trace of concentration, Avenant stood up as he made his way over to her. Mrs. Potters made a face of disapproval at him, one that he took no heed of. Alison only noticed him when he tapped on her back saying, "You need to keep your posture straight, and there will be no slouching. You and I have practice here at eleven every Monday. We start meeting as a group at three in the afternoon on Wednesday. I expect you here for both. For now, you may head back to class. Your homework for this week is to practice scales and the piece that you see in front of you. I expect perfection from you."

Alison stared at him in surprise but nodded her head politely. Getting up, Alison took the papers from the piano and left them alone. Mrs. Potters let out a large huff as she said, "Really, Avenant. How unfair are you!? How could you expect her to play an instrument she's not even using in this program!?"

"She will be using it in the program," Avenant said shortly, "And I would appreciate it if you would not come in and criticize me for testing her abilities!"

Mrs. Potters huffed and waltzed out of the room with an irritated expression on her face. Avenant rolled his eyes before glancing over the violin he had provided her to play. Sighing, Avenant mumbled, "Well the Queen certainly did not lie…"

"Alison."

Alison froze as she readjusted her bag on her shoulder. Looking behind her, she saw Regina walking towards her, dressed in a form fitting black suit and red blouse. Her heels clicked against the tile floor as she approached Alison. Alison kept a blank face as she asked shortly, "Is there something you want, Madame Mayor?"

"One of the few people to call me that still," Regina said with a cluck, "Don't worry, I've come here on good terms."

"Oh?" Alison asked, staring at Regina suspiciously.

"I remember you telling me that you couldn't use Anti-Magic," Regina said, crossing her arms, "And I've seen you haven't been using much magic recently. I was going to offer training with you, but Gold must surely be helping you… There is now way he would leave your skills to get rusty."

Alison's stomach flipped as she frowned. Alison refused to look Regina in the eye as Regina raised her brows. Of course the Queen would taunt her for that. Scoffing, Regina said, "Clearly not… old fool. Well then, I have an offer for you."

"Regina, I don't think-," Alison started but Regina cut her off saying, "I will help you train, especially in developing your Anti-Magic, if you do something for me."

Alison frowned as she said, "And what is that?"

"All in due time," Regina said smoothly, "So what do you say?"

Alison bit her lip as the bell rang. She glanced back up at Regina saying, "If I'm going to learn, I'm going to learn it from him. Goodbye, Madame Mayor."

Alison turned away pulling a piece of paper out of her pocket. Alison walked away from Regina as the woman called after her, "Very well, but I'll be waiting DEAR."

Alison found the door with the number on her letter: room 218. All of her frustration was lost to her as she stared at it nervously. There would be no Henry or Paige waiting for her. Alison bit the inside of her mouth as she reached towards the door and opened it.

There were students inside, separated into groups across the room. No one seemed to notice her coming in as she walked over to an empty desk. Slinging her backpack on it, Alison sighed softly when a shadow appeared on her desk. Alison turned around suddenly as a female voice said, "Hello."

She was older than Mary Margaret, her white hair falling gracefully at her shoulders. Alison would have to guess in her early fifties. She was wearing a silk black shirt with black tweed skirt. She obviously took great pride in her appearance. Her smile was sly and spunky. Her voice, in great alikeness with her smile, reminded her of one of her father's former magazine friends.

"You must be Alison, I'm Miss Gerson," She said, extending her hand. Alison shook it saying quietly, "Pleased to meet you…"

"Aha, shyness is not allowed in my class," Miss Gerson said, grasping her shoulder, "That's why I've got everyone separated into groups. Lesley, Jess!"

The two children looked over at her, smiling warmly. Miss Gerson led her over to them as she said, "This is Alison."

"I know, I remember her from last year," Lesley said grinning, "You are that Autumn girl from last year, right?"

"Yeah," Alison said, her voice sounding a bit unsure. Miss Gerson walked away as Lesley exchanged looks with Jess. Jess, who pushed his brown hair out of his eyes before saying, "You're Gold's kid, aren't you?"

"Jess!" Lesley said, elbowing her friend. Alison shifted slightly as she said, "Yeah, why?"

"No reason really," Jess said, "There are just a lot a rumors about him, you know."

"No, I don't know," Alison's stomach filled with dread as she said, "What kind of rumors?"

"Some people say he's trying to find a way to reclaim the Dark One's powers," Jess said, nervously, "So he can be all powerful."

"But other people have said that he's changed!" Lesley said, quickly, "A lot of people. They've said he's either forgive deals or been lenient with them."

"He's not reclaiming anything," Alison said firmly, "He won't; besides he has the power of the Mage now he doesn't need it."

"Alright class, find your seats so we can go over our schedule!"

Everyone made their way back to their seats, Alison taking her place at the back of the class. Although she had been firm about her stance to Jess, her heart wavered. Rumors always stemmed from some grain of truth and it wasn't beyond him to search for more power. It was usually done out of fear though as she couldn't understand what he could be afraid of.

Alice gasped in delight.

The gardens were extravagant, filled with neatly trimmed grass and trees with white roses. A portion of the ground held the croquet game, where people were beginning to take their seats. They were all dresses in red, white, and black garb. The woman wore strange crowns that seemed more like metal headbands or hats that she could have sworn the Hatter made. The women's corsets were of black leather and the skirts not nearly as poof as the queens. They seem to float away from them, dragging on the ground. Alison couldn't help but look around in awe as she twirled her own skirts. Her dress was red, her own skirts floating away from her small waist. The sleeves were short, and the trimming black and gold. The skirt had embroidered hearts upon, elegant and simple. Her hair was partially pulled back by a gold headband, woven with fake golden leaves. Alice did not think of herself as pretty as many of the people there but grateful as it was a gift from her Majesty.

"You look lovely, Alice."

Alison turned to see Cora walking up to her. Alice bowed deeply but couldn't help but appreciate Cora's loveliness. Her own dress had a black bodice, the sleeves long and slender. Her gloves were red as the cuffs on the sleeves white with black embroidery. The skirts were deep red with black web like designs stretching across. Diamonds and rubies trimmed her grown, matching the crown at the top of her head. Two women dressed in red gowns stood behind her, looking completely identical. Alice lowered her gaze, staring at the ground as she waited for Cora's command. Cora smiled, obviously pleased with Alice's display of manners. Gently grasping Alice's chin, Cora said, "Rise, the festivities will be beginning soon and I want you to enjoy them."

Alice smiled warmly as she said, "Thank you, Your Majesty. You look beautiful."

"Thank you," Cora said graciously. Cora looked up at the trees and frowned softly. Sighing, Cora said, "I am disappointed. My servants planted white roses when I specifically asked for red."

"You could always paint the roses red."

Cora couldn't help but laugh as she led Alice to a tent with two lounge chairs. She then said, "Indeed, Alice. Come… the game will be starting soon. These are my Tweedlies. They will attend to anything you request."

"At your service, Miss. Alice," one of the tweedlies said as Alison sat on the chair Cora did not occupy. She smiled warmly at the Tweedlie who stood by her chair. The woman couldn't help smile back perkily. Cora waved her hand and the Knave blew the horn. He parted it from his lips as he said loudly, "Let the Croquet game begin!"

"Don't touch anything."

Emma followed Regina down into her vault, frowning as she heard Regina speak. They finally descended into her vault as Emma said, "How am I supposed to learn if I'm not supposed to touch anything?"

"Like how Rumpelstiltskin taught me, we start with the basics," Regina said, opening a trunk to pull out a book, "And build up from there."

Emma looked around and saw a dried up looking wing as her curiosity peaked. Grabbing it, Emma examined it as Regina opened to a page in the book turning around. Frowning deeply, Regina snatched the wing from her hand and said, "I said don't touch!"

Emma made a face but said nothing. Regina then handed her the open book saying, "We will start with roots of incantations."

"What language is this? Spanish?" Emma said, her eyes wide.

"We're making magic not tacos," Regina said with a scowl, "It's elvish… well part elvish."

"This will take too long," Emma said with upset, "Is this how Rumple taught you? Think back, did he use any other methods to teach you?"

"Rumple was a bully," Regina said with a scoff. She turned around to put the book away saying, "He didn't suffer fools and he most definitely didn't coddle his students. If he tried to teach you to swim and you couldn't learn, you drowned."

"Drowned?" Emma asked as Regina had a click of realization. Regina turned to her with wide eyes as she said, "That's it!"

"That's what?" Emma asked in concern as Regina waved her hands upward. Emma gasped as she felt the world spin around her as her feet left the ground. She felt completely unsteady as she felt herself fall backwards. Emma grabbed the first things she could, which were two ropes on either side of her. Staring around widely, Emma found herself standing on a rickety old bridge that hovered dangerously above a gorge. Emma stared at Regina, who was standing safely on the ground on one side. Emma stared widely at her as she shouted, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"

"Teaching you to swim," Regina said, triumphantly.

Alice thought it was absolutely ridiculous.

She wouldn't lie; it was rather funny to watch. However, she couldn't understand for the life of her why they were playing the game with flamingo's and hedgehogs. She couldn't understand how the flamingo stayed so straight or how the hedgehog managed to stay in such a tight ball. The current player was fighting with his flamingo to hit the ball through the hole. When the play finally managed to snap the flamingo straight, it hit him square in the shin. He howled in pain as the court seemed to laugh. Cora laughed as well as Alice smiled quirkily. Cora glanced over at her as she asked, "Would you like to try, Alice?"

The girl looked over at her in surprise as Alice shook her head saying, "Majesty, I haven't the clue of how to play…"

"That's the beauty of it," Cora said smiling, "No one does."

Alice opened her mouth in confusion as Cora clapped her hands. Everyone silence as Cora beckoned one of the players to come over. He bowed hastily, hurrying over to her. He was wearing a white shirt, red vest and black pants. On his jacket was embroidered an eight within a heart as he covered it with his hand saying, "Your Majesty."

"Please assist my guest in playing, she has never been to court before," Cora commanded, "It'll only be for a turn."

"Yes, Majesty," the man said, taking Alice's hand, "Come, little miss. This way."

Alison followed him, feeling a little foolish as he grabbed the flamingo roughly by the legs. He snapped it, the flamingo going completely straight. He then hand her the flamingo, helping her from behind. He then whispered saying, "You must swing with all your might. If you don't the flamigo's head will bobble."

"But won't I miss the hole?" Alice questioned but he encouraged her on. Biting her lip, she did as the man instructed and the ball went flying, missing the hole in front of her by far. Her cheeks turned red as she bowed her head. Only to jerk it up in confusion when everyone applauded. Tilting her head, Alison looked up at him confused as he said gleefully, "You've made it through the tenth yard!"

"What?" Alison looked to see her ball sitting not to far under one of the fake holes, far into the field. He took the flamingo from her and clapped. Alice looked over at the Queen, who was the only one not clapping. However, she smiled and bowed her head in her general direction. Alice curtsied only to be interrupted by a scream.

The last bell rang for the day.

The children hastily gathered their stuff as Miss Gerson said, "Don't forget! Read chapter one in Peter Pan, we'll be discussing it tomorrow!"

Alison slowly put her books into her bag as everyone else left. Alison glanced at Lesley who gave her a quick smile before running out the door after Jess. Alison sighed softly, putting her books in her bag. Miss. Gerson walked over and leaned against the desk near hers. She smiled wickedly at Alison as she said, "So I hear your father is a writer. Of children stories no less."

"Yes, he was," Alison said, her voice sounding a teensy bit uncomfortable. Slinging her backpack upon her back, Alison heard Miss Gerson said, "I'm a sucker for good books. You'll have to bring me one so I can see how good they are."

Alison managed a smile back as she said, "I'll see what I can find. Any preference?"

"Oh, it doesn't matter," Miss Gerson said cheekily, "Surprise me."

Alison nodded and said with a weaker smile, "Alright… see you tomorrow!"

"Goodbye, Alison," Miss Gerson said as Alison walked out into the hallway. Most of the children were out in the hallway as all the children walked towards the exit. Alison was searching for anyone she knew when someone shoved her to the ground, wincing as she felt a pain shoot through her elbows. Alison quickly sat up as she saw a girl with black hair and a nasty expression on her face.

"Move it, stupid!" the girl snarled as she took off into the sea of people. Alison gritted her teeth as she glared after her. Standing up, Alison made her way outside.

"Hey Alison!"

Alison walked over towards Ava and Nicholas. They were standing under the tree as she waved at them. Walking over to them, Ava noticed her disgruntled expression. Raising her brows, Ava asked her as she got closer, "Bad day?"

"No, just some girl in the hallway pushed me over," Alison muttered, "And had the nerve to call me stupid…"

"Well, that' sounds like a bad way to start the school year," Nicholas said, wearily, "Which is fine because we're off to not a great start either. Our teachers are kinda crabby…"

"Where are Henry and Paige?" Alison asked, staring around to find her friends. Ava narrowed her eyes and pointed over towards the school picnic tables growling, "There."

Alison looked over to where she was pointing, and what she saw was a surprise. Paige and Henry were standing next to the black haired girl laughing. She seemed much friendlier towards them. In fact, she almost seemed like a completely different person. However, there was an air to her that Alison surely did not like. Alison made a face as she turned back to them saying, "That's the girl who pushed me in the hallway!"

"Her name is Molly," Ava said coldly.

"She was in our grade," Nicholas elaborated, looking rather annoyed, "She was held back though because she kept cutting school."

"She's the nastiest person on the face of the planet," Ava said darkly, "I hate her."

"I guessed that much," Alison said, frowning, "So why is Paige and Henry sitting with her?"

"She sucks up to people," Ava growled, "Once she gets bored of them, she starts showing her true colors."

Alison glanced back over to see Paige running over to Jefferson. The two of them embraced and they walked away. Henry disappeared, leaving Alison to make a sad face. Ava and Nicholas exchanged looks as Ava asked, "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine!" Alison said, shaking her head. Ava watched her friend a moment when she heard a shout from across the street.

"Ava! Nicholas!"

They both looked over to see their father sitting in the truck waving to them. Ava sighed and looked at Alison sadly. Nicholas looked bummed as well as Ava explained, "We're helping dad clean today… we won't be able to help search for Excalibur."

"It's alright," Alison said, her voice sounding glum, "I'll let you know if I find him…"

Ava and Nicholas hurried off to their father, giving her one last apologetic glance. Alison watched as they drove away and Alison slumped her shoulders. Walking down the sidewalk, Alison looked around for any more familiar faces. When she couldn't find any, Alison began to walk towards the stables. Her shoulders slumped, wondering where Henry had disappeared off to. Turning into an alley way, Alison found herself wandering her usual right to the stables. However, she did not get very far when she heard a familiar voice.

"So this is where you went off to!"

Alison looked over towards the voice to see August coming out from around a corner. Alison made a face as she said, "I'm looking for Excalibur… He's still missing."

"So I've been told," August said, following her as she continued on through the back streets. August frowned as he said, "You know, he's not exactly a tamed horse… he might just be out for a good run."

Alison gave him a pointed look before watching the scene in front of her. August couldn't help but notice her annoyance as he frowned. Moving quickly so he blocked her path, August grasped her shoulder to stop her. She glared up at him as August said concerned, "Hey! What's up with you? I would have thought you would have been happy with being accepted into the program."

"I told you, I need to find Excalibur!" Alison said heatedly, "And you're getting in my way!"

"Alison, there is really nothing to be too concerned about," August expressed, earnestly, "He used to do this a lot-!"

"And I'm telling you that it's NOT normal!" Alison said, pushing him out of her way. August narrowed his eyes in confusion as he grabbed her arm to tug her back. Alison's stared at him, her eyes glowering at him. There was a distinct rumble of thunder could be heard above as the sky grew a bit darker. Frowning even more so, August said, "What's the matter with you lately? Why don't we head to Granny's diner and talk about it?"

Alison growled, pushing him away before snapping, "Why?! So I can hear more of your excuses?!"

Her anger overwhelmed her, her usual control slipping. August looked surprised as he stood up saying with a groan, "Alison, I told you I'm sorry. I had important errands to run."

"As I watch your nose grow!" Alison snapped, pushing away from him, "Kissing up on Ruby is NOT IMPORTANT!"

With that, Alison stormed away, going back towards the center of town. August looked aghast, shaking his head slightly as he shouted, "Lizzie! Lizzie wait!"

The rain began to fall as she ran down the street. Grimacing, she remembered the papers in her backpack that she couldn't get wet. Hurrying over to the bus stop, she hid under the overhang. Gritting her teeth in frustration, she sat on the bench staring at the ground. August finally caught up with her, looking rather wet as he sat next to her. He looked miserable, like a child that just got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Alison refused to look at him, staring firmly at the sidewalk.

"You know," August said, "I have no idea why you're father made me your Godfather."

Alison still said nothing, but it would be a lie that his statement did not spark intrigue. Alison kicked her foot against the concrete lightly as August continued, "I have never been, and don't think I'll ever be a responsible guy. And just as I've always been irresponsible, I have been selfish. So selfish… I never wanted to take you away from Kathryn… or even Gold. But Lizzie, I didn't want to let you go either."

Alison finally looked over at him, and allowed her mouth to fall open when she saw that there were tears in his eyes. He looked at her with a weak unconvincing smile as he said, "I spent what felt like endless years mourning you. Mourning that I let you slip out of my sight for two seconds and that I, in the end, am the reason we could never have you again. When I found out I had custody over you, I couldn't just let Gold take you. I never ever wanted to let you go ever again. However, I realized that I have no idea how to take care of you. So I left you with Kathryn, still watching over you like your father asked. But I have no idea how to govern you being my niece and you being the Mage of Wonderland. I don't know how I can even help you because it's a world that Baelfire and I refused to step foot in."

Alison watched him, breathing in deeply through her nose. Guilt mounted up inside her, replacing the anger within. It had nothing to do with Ruby… it had been much more than that. August looked at her heartbroken as he said, "I truly, TRULY did not mean to ditch you. I chickened out because I cannot possibly think on how I can protect you from anything. Gold's got magic, Kathryn's got status, I just have a pen and blank paper."

August reached up and gently tapped her nose saying, "I can't compare, I can't compete. And it frustrates me all the more."

Alison's lip trembled a bit as she said, "This is not a contest… I love you, Gold, and Kathryn."

"I know," August murmured, softly, "But frankly, we both know that I can't do what your father asked of me."

Alison bit her lip before August grabbed her hand. He looked at her firmly as he said, "Hey… don't be upset. Please. I will always be here to get you in trouble, to read stories, and argue about what happens in the happily ever after."

August's frown returned as he said, sadly, "I just can't be the man you looked up to…"

"I have that already," Alison mumbled as he stroked her cheek gently, "I'll always have that… I'd rather have my troublemaker Uncle."

He looked at her quizzically as he said unsure, "Even if that means you end up with a troublemaker Aunt?"

Alison gapped, but then scoffed as she said teasingly, "As long as I don't have see your mush ever again. Yeah, a troublesome aunt would be good."

August grinned, catching her in a hug as he said, "Now come on. I think I owe you dinner and a big piece of chocolate pie."

"How many times do I have to tell you," Alison scowled as August stood up, "I hate sweets."

August grinned at her humorously as he said, "Then that means more for me."

Alice looked widely over to see that one of the women in the crowd was pointing at the sky. A floating head hand appeared, floating above the hedges to the queen's maze. She gaped she saw him and couldn't help but let out a little groan.

"Hello, everyone," Chess said slyly, "I hope you don't mind me dropping in for a little snack."

"Guards!" Cora thundered her voice quite angry. Chess leaped down in full body form, knocking over one of the tents onto the group of people. Chess chased after the flamingo's nipping at their legs. The guards chased after him; however Chess kept evaporating as they tried to capture him. Cora's eyes glared at them and Alice panicked. Kind or not, Queen's were queens and they did not appreciate the shenanigans of a Cheshire Cat. Looking around as people fled the gardens in fright; Alison noticed Mocking Birds tied to a perch. Hurrying over, she untied one as she whispered, "Lead him away and I'll give you a treat."

"Yoo hoo!"

Chess looked up, hearing Alice's voice. However, upon looking up he saw a bird flying above him. Cheshire licked his mouth as he purred, "The perfect afternoon snack, beautiful voice in all."

Chess pounced after it, disappearing behind the hedge. The guards went after it into the maze leave the servants to rush about cleaning the mess Chess made. Alice sighed in relief as she heard a screech behind her.

"It's your fault!"

Alice spun around to see a young woman with a heart shaped face and sharp eyes. Hey eyes were a pale grey and her dress accented her form well. Her dress was black with red and white trimming; her head dress a crown with sharp points on them. Her hair was brown and was falling about her in waves. Grabbing Alice's arm, who was now trembling, the woman snapped, "How dare a Nobody act out in court. You could lose your head for such an action."

"Marquise that is enough."

The woman froze, almost instantly letting go of Alice's arm. Alice looked over at Cora. All anger had left it, but a firm stare remained. The woman swallowed, but stared firmly at Cora as she said, "I gave you no permission to punish her. She is on my grounds, not yours."

The Marquise inhaled deeply as she stared at Cora. However she inclined her head and backed away. Cora approached Alison, who try to not tremble in fright as Cora said something that Alice could not make sense of.

"After all, she is not a Nobody. She is my Pet."

The many people gasped, whispered breaking out all over. The Marquise made a face before disappearing into the crowd. Alice looked up at Cora, as Cora stared at her kindly. Kneeling, she kissed the girls cheek and whispered in her ear, "My favorite."

"I'm sorry I ran off."

"It's alright," Alison said, holding the phone in her hand. She was sitting on her bed, the window curtains shut tight. It was obviously night time as she was in her typical bed time tee shirt and sweats. Alison was leaning back into the pillows as she looked through a hard covered book that was wrapped in fabric. Frowning Alison asked, "But where did you go?"

"The woods," Henry said, with a sigh, "I wanted to see if I could watch Regina teach Emma magic. All I got was scolded."

"Aww," Alison said, smiling weakly, "I'm sorry… maybe if I can get Gold to help me learn how to switch back and forth between Anti-Magic and Magic, you could watch…"

"You think he'll let you?"

"I don't know," Alison said with a sigh, "I don't even know if he'll help me."

"I guess you're just going to have to outright ask him," Henry said. Alison nodded as she pouted a bit, obviously not liking the thought of that. Looking at the next page in the story, Alison said, "Huh… it looks like my Dad had his own little adventures with Ryaden."

"You mean the Mage of Trickery Isle?" Henry said excitedly, "What does it say?!"

Alison would have answered only to have the phone magically fly from her hand. She tried snatching it, however, Gold made it fly over to him. Catching it, Gold leaned against the doorway as he said, "Sorry, Henry. It's time for Alison to head to bed. Goodnight."

"Hey!" Alison huffed as Gold made the phone disappear. Alison pouted fully this time as she whined, "I wasn't done talking to him."

"I'm sure you will have plenty of time to talk to him tomorrow," Gold said, walking over to her, "Now under the cover's, you need your sleep."

Alison made a face before climbing under the covers obediently. Gold took the golden rimmed glasses off her face before sitting down on the bed. Alison stared up at him, holding onto her book. Gold flicked his fingers and soon all they had for light was the nightlight by her bed. Alison frowned as she said, "I'm going to have a hard time reading if you turn off the lights…"

"I have no interest in reading tonight," Gold said dismissively, taking the book from her. He set it on the night stand, let it slip from his fingers carefully. Alison looked surprised, but quickly pulled a pokerface. Her insides twisted a bit and Alison said, "You're never usually this quick in tucking me in."

"That's because I have some things to do tonight and you have school in the morning," Gold said swiftly. His eyes were blank, making Alison very nervous as to what was going on in his mind. Alison bit her lip a bit, Gold catching onto her action. Leaning down, Gold pushed her hair out of her face as he kissed her forehead. Pulling away, Gold said, "Now, now. Don't fret. You had an exciting day and I don't want that being tainted by your worries."

"Then can I ask you something?"

"What?" Gold asked softly.

"Will you train with me? With my magic I mean."

It came out so suddenly, which wasn't intended. Alison couldn't think of anything else to do as he was practically running out the door. When he didn't answer right away, Alison continued nervously, "It's not like I can't use it. But it's been difficult since I came back from Antic. And it's not like I can keep on not using it…"

Gold sat up fully, staring down at her with his brown eyes. His business façade was up and he wasn't saying anything. Her heart felt liked it was in her throat, waiting for him. However, her heart finally dropped as she heard his next answer.

"No, I won't."

Gold stood up and walked towards her bedroom door. Her heart seemed to catch in her throat as she sat up saying, "Bu-!"

"Autumn," his voice sounded cold, as he glanced back at her with the same expression, "Don't ask me again."

Gold left, shutting her bedroom door. Alison listened as she heard Belle say, "Are you ready? The popcorn is almost ready-?"

"Yes, yes, dearie, I'm coming."

Alison breathed in, sniffling unconsciously. Her eyes burned so quickly that she couldn't stop it. Wiping the tears that were escaping down her cheeks, Alison couldn't help but wonder why he was resisting at every turn to help get them home. However she trembled at what Jess had told her earlier that day.

"Some people say he's trying to find a way to reclaim the Dark One's powers."

Her stomach swooped as distrust began to form in her heart. Perhaps helping her was not what he wanted at all. Was it possible that they were on opposite sides of the field once more. No… no it couldn't be. The Dark One's knife was gone, his dark powers were gone.

However, any comforting thought she thought up could not stop the achy feeling in her heart. Alison glanced at the book on the bed stand. Another was by it as she recognized it as one of her reading books. It was labeled Peter Pan, written in simple gold words. If her father was here, he'd certainly know what to do… Clinging it to her chest, Alison found herself falling into the pillows where she cried herself to sleep.

"Thank you, Your Majesty."

Cora was sitting under the gazebo, the curtains floating around the entrances. Alice was sitting in a chair near her as the Tweedlie poured them tea. Cora tilted her head as she asked, "Thank you for what?"

"For saving me, from the Marquise," Alice said innocently.

"Oh dear child," Cora said dismissively, "You were never in any danger from the Marquise. She's all talk in this court."

Alice nodded softly but still looked at Cora gratefully. Cora smiled down at the child however, after taking a sip of her tea. Reaching over to push a stray hair behind Alice's ear, Cora said, "I would like for you to stay with me here… in the castle."

Alice looked surprised as she asked, "As in live here?"

"Of course live here," Cora said softly, "Being my Pet is not like you being a dog or a kitten. Being my Pet is of the utmost importance… it gets very lonely for a Queen who cannot have any more children."

Alice kicked her legs softly as she asked timidly, "What of the Hatter?"

"He lives in what he chooses," Cora said, swiftly, "However you can go through the maze to go a visit him whenever you'd like. I would be very happy if you were able to call this castle your home…"

Alice watched a look of hope enter the Queen's facial expression. Alice felt her heart flutter happily at her words. She nodded saying, "Yes, and it would make me happy too."

Cora leaned down and kissed Alice's cheek, the Tweedlies beaming happily. Cora then whispered into Alice's ear, "Then welcome home, my dear Alice Little."

The horse neighs were more like screeches and cries.

It was tied, tied up in many different ways to prevent its escape. The stable it was in was dark and dingy, clearly not remotely well maintained. The horse struggled to get free as he tried kicking and flailing. However the binds would not break. There were footsteps as someone approached a light appearing in the barn. There was a crack of the whip that seemed to upset the horse. The man came around the corner, his beard very short and scratchy. His hair was a brown, his eyes malicious. His hair was messy and unkempt, but his build was not unattractive. He grasped his whip before cracking it off again shouted, "Shut up! If you'd just be quiet, I wouldn't have to come in here to remind you!"

The horse snorted at him angrily and the man said coldly, "You wouldn't be here if you weren't always helping that brat! But soon that's not going to matter anymore…"

The man watched the horse struggled as he let out an irritated growl saying, "Fine. Struggle till those ropes cause all the sores you want. I'm not letting you go."

The man began to walk away, leaving Excalibur alone in the dark as he said, "Not until I've gotten what I want."
