Chapter Sixty Five: Mock Turtle's Story.

"Alice I would like to introduce you to someone."

Alice looked up from the pond. Will was standing near her, leaning against the tree. She watched as Cora approached with a man. He was dressed rather flamboyantly, his clothes brighter than any colors she had ever seen. His hat held multiple brown feathers, and his eyes sharper than most. Alice curtsied deeply as Will bowed. They both stayed that way as Cora said, "Rise up you both. My guest will want to see your faces."

Alice and Will straightened up, as Alice looked over at the guest. Cora extended her gloved hand, saying, "This is my pet, Alice Little."

"It is a pleasure to meet you, Kleine Dame," the man said bowing deeply.

"It is a pleasure to meet you, Good Sir," Alice said sincerely curtsying politely, "This is my companion, Will Scarlet."

"Pleasure to meet you, Mister Scarlet," The man said nodding his head in respect. Will did the same as he said, "It is a pleasure."

"This is Gryphon, he is the leader of the Spring Festival Entertainment," Cora said, smiling at Alice, "We will be attending this Festival two days from now and I wanted you to meet him before then."

"Thank you," Alice said brightly. She looked over at the Gryphon as she asked, "Will there be a puppet show?"

"Oh, something like that," Gryphon said winking, "You will see when you attend."

"It'll be a surprise," Cora said smoothly, "Since it is your first."

Alice looked at Will excited as he smiled at her. Cora walked forward as she bent down saying, "Now, I will have many duties to attend to during the festival. I want you to invite the Mad Hatter to help keep your company before we attend the Ring show together. Can you do that for me?"

"Yes, You're Majesty," Alice said with a little curtsy. Cora tapped her nose gently before saying, "Then I shall leave you to it."

Cora watched Alice hurry away, pulling on Will's arm eagerly. The Gryphon watched Cora stand up straight as he said, "She is a credit to your name, My Queen."

"That she is," Cora said proudly, "I hope you enjoyed meeting her."

"Deeply," the man grinned, "I can tell she's a feisty wee one."

"Feisty," Cora said, "But well mannered."

"Yes," the Gryphon said, "I have a hard time understanding why some others don't like her."

"You mean the Marquise of Spades," Cora asked sharply, "She wouldn't. After all, she was hoping her son would be my favorite."

"Not just her, I'm afraid," Gryphon said, his voice grave, "Other's in court as well. Some of them, Majesty, have said her friendship with the Hatter is suspicious."

"Suspicious how?"

Gryphon rolled his eyes and said, "Treason of course."

Cora laughed, before saying, "Oh, I can hear the Knave saying that of course. His ravings are annoying even if he is loyal."

"I only tell you out of concern, Majesty," Gryphon said, honestly.

"I know," Cora said, nodding her head as they began to walk again, "After all, you are one of my many ears in my ever so large court."

Alison stared at the book.

It was floating in a magical orb, protected. She was in the Authors Study, the tables pushed aside to make room for the protection spell carved into the podium the book was floating over. The book spun around slowly, entrancing Alison in her thoughts. Henry walked up to her, watching her. Alison watched it with a distant expression as she asked, "Did you see any of it?"

"What?" Henry asked.

"My story," Alison said, "I remember, sometimes it was like Dad could see the stories he wrote about… I know you didn't write it, but did you see it?"

Henry shifted uncomfortably as he looked at his friend apologetically.

"I saw parts of it," Henry said, "It was strange, like something weird came over me. I saw bits and pieces flying around my head."

Alison nodded tersely, hanging her head in shame. Henry grabbed her hand, squeezing tight. Alison looked at him sadly.

"Nothing, and I mean nothing, could ever stop me from being your friend," Henry said reassuringly, "And no one will ever touch this book again so long as we keep it here."

Alison smiled weakly as Henry said, "Come on, let's get to school."

Both of them went to leave the room. Henry closed the door and said, "Vespera. Lock it up tight."

"Understood, Master Henry."

"Not gonna lie, I could get used to that," grinned Henry goofily. Alison rolled her eyes as she retorted, "Don't get any ideas."

"That is more than enough!"

Alison made a face, hearing Avenant's irritated voice. Lifting up her hands from the piano, Alison looked over at him to see his face was cold.

"I don't know what is going on with you all today," Avenant said, twirling the baton in his hand, "But it's sloppy and unpleasant to the ears! It must stop!"

Alison made a face as did many others. One girl actually looked frustrated and on the verge of tears. Even Fife, his faithful companion, looked a little on edge. Avenant sighed, as if trying to calm himself. Putting his baton down, he said, "Everyone take a ten minute break. We'll try this again with a better mind."

Everyone murmured as they put down their instruments. Alison sighed as she stood up from the seat at the piano. Fife quickly made his way over as he said, "Well, then. Want to take a walk outside for a minute?"

"Sure," Alison said getting up. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the girl in tears hurry out the door. Alison titled her head in concern as Fife said, "That's Dianne. She's been like that all week."

"I see," Alison said as she walked away with Fife. While other's filed out of the auditorium and towards the front entrance, Fife began walking down the hallway.

"Aren't we going outside?"

"Yeah, just somewhere different," Fife said, "Follow me."

Alison followed him up the stairs and down several hallways until they found themselves at a door. Fife pulled a ring of keys as Alison asked, "Are we supposed to be up here?"

"I have the keys don't I?" Fife said with a grin.

"And yet something makes me think you're not supposed to," Alison said, a grin appearing on her face.

Fife unlocked the door and swung it open saying, "If you'd like to go and leave me all by myself, you can."

Alison snorted as she said, "Baby."

"Hardly!" Fife said, extending his arm, "After you."

Alison walked out to find herself on the roof. She gasped when she saw the view before her. The sun was setting in the horizon, making the buildings look like shadows. Alison walked over to the edge and leaned against it. Fife followed her as he said, "So now you know two of my secret spots."

"Secret and pretty sure illegal," Alison said, giggling.

"Hey, you're friends with the Sheriff," Fife said, "I doubt she'll arrest you."

"She might just for kicks," Alison said, "Not that she could keep me in the cell."

"Because Gold would get you out?"

"No because I could break out." Alison said cheekily.

"Could not," Fife said with a huff.

"Could too," Alison said, "I've done it more than twice in my life time."

"You've been arrested?"

"Arrested, kidnapped," Alison said, thoughtfully, "Sometimes for just fun."

Fife rolled his eyes as he said, "You're crazy."

"I'm a Wonderlander, you're just figuring this out?" Alison said teasingly.

Fife looked out at the sunset as he said, "Apparently the Mage of Wonderland…"

Alison's face fell as she looked away from him. Fife noticed as he said, "I'm sorry… I didn't meant to make it sound bad or anything-!"

"It's alright," Alison said, "I'd just rather not talk about it. I'd rather know why Professor Avenant is in such a bad mood."

"He gets that way before every concert," Fife said, sighing, "Especially since it's so close."

"I get it," Alison said, "it is nerve racking. The concert's this Friday."

"I know," Fife said, his voice sigh, "Where did the time go?"

"What are you two doing up here?"

Alison and Fife turned to see a woman with curly brown hair. She was rather pretty, her dress clinging to her waist. Her eyes were intrigued as Fife stood up saying, "We're on break, Miss Krystal. We were just getting some fresh air."

"I see," Miss Krystal said, eyeing Alison with interest, "Well, come back in Fife, you and your friend really shouldn't be up here this late. You could have been locked out."

"I'm sorry." Fife took Alison's hand as he said, "We'll be heading back now!"

Before Alison could say a word, Fife pulled her inside saying, "See you Miss Krystal!"

"Fife-!" Alison said, as he dragged her down the stairs. When they had gotten back to the first floor, he finally let her go. Alison stared at him suspiciously as she rubbed her wrist. Fife looked at her apologetically as he said, "Sorry about that."

"Who is she?" Alison asked, "And why did you just run me down several flights of stairs to get away from her?"

"Miss Krystal is the music teacher for the elementary school," he explained, "She… she has her own afterschool program with choir."

"Oh," Alison said, "Okay… why run from her though?"

"She-Professor Avenant and her don't get along," Fife explained, "They have a tendency to irk each other."

"Everyone back inside!" Avenant's voice barked, "We need to get back to work."

Alison and Fife exchanged looks before heading back into the auditorium. Alison sat down at the piano as Avenant shuffled through his papers. Alison noticed that Dianne's seat was empty.

"Where is Dianne?" Avenant demanded, his eyes narrowing as he stared at her empty seat.

"She's gone," a girl said, shrugging, "She took off down the street…"

Avenant's face darkened as he said, "Well then, Fife take her place. Raven move up to first seat."

The two rearranged themselves, Fife moving over to the clarinets spot. Alison made a face, feeling slightly bugged by the turn in events. He quickly put together his clarinet as Avenant said, "Alison give us a tuning key."

"So Henry, how was school today?"

Henry, Piper, Emma, Charming, and Snow were sitting at the table in the kitchen. Henry glanced at Charming as he said, "It was good. Grace and I have a science project due on Friday so we spent a good hour in the school library this afternoon."

"I saw you had lunch with Ava and Nick today too," Snow said, cutting up her ham, "But I didn't see Alison with you."

"Alison was in practicing with her friend," Henry said, shrugging. He then looked thoughtful as he said, "Oh! She got your tickets to the concert! I have them up in my bag."

Henry raced off as Emma smiled after him. Piper did as well before saying, "Always on the run."

"That may be true, but I am looking forward to this concert," Snow said happily, "Avenant's concerts are always a joy to see."

"I hope so, that poor kid's been practicing day and night on the piano according to Granny," Emma said. Charming and Snow exchanged glances before Snow shook her head slightly. Charming looked put out as Piper and Emma noticed this. Wiping his mouth with his napkin, Piper asked, "Is everything okay?"

"Yes," Snow said, "I mean- we just couldn't help but wonder where Regina was. We invited her to dinner-!"

"Yeah-I mean she's busy," Emma said quickly, glancing at Piper. He made a little face as Charming leaned back saying, "With what? I mean she retired from office."

Emma shrugged, avoiding all eye contact. Henry could be heard as he shuffled around upstairs. Snow shifted as she asked hopefully, "Does it have to do with Operation Jumper?"

Emma froze as did Piper. Emma looked at them guiltily as Snow said, "Henry is not as quiet as he thinks he is. We know Regina has been helping with something related to one of his plans."

"Well, I mean-," Emma said, "It wasn't our place to say-!"

"Alison needs help from Regina," Piper explained, "Especially since Gold said she's not allowed to help with magic anymore. She wanted this kept on the hush side for safety reasons."

"But why not tell us? We've been helping so far," Charming asked as Henry slowly came down the stairs. He walked over to them as he said, "Alison didn't want to make you help her… you know considering what you guys were planning…"

"Henry!" Snow said surprised, "Wha-?"

"You guys talk louder than me," Henry said shrugging as he put the tickets on the table, "Alison heard you when she and I had stayed over one night."

"Heard what?" Emma asked, baffled. Charming sighed as he looked at Snow. As if nodding her head in agreement, Snow watched as Charming sighed. Looking over at Emma, Charming said, "We've been talking lately… We have considered moving."

"Oh," Emma said, surprised, "Like into a… house?"

"No," Snow said, gently, "Into a city… like Boston."

Emma gaped as Piper looked up alarmed. He looked at Emma nervously as Henry shifted. Emma straightened up as she asked, "You want to move?"

"Well I mean, we had been thinking about it," Snow said, "We have a chance here… to go and have lives without dangerous demons and villains… I think we'd be foolish not to at least consider it."

Emma was speechless as Piper looked slightly put out. The tense atmosphere remained, leaving the family to wonder in silence. Henry looked around nervously as he watched Emma's face. It was impassive which scared him for he wasn't sure what she was thinking. Or in this case, what she was deciding.

Especially now that he had something here he needed to protect.

"Look at all the tents, Hatter!"

The Mad Hatter watched the young girl look around at all of the color tents and booths. Will was standing not too far away, watching around the tents with distain. The Mad Hatter smiled as he said, "Quite colorful, quite colorful indeed. Not nearly has colorful as my hats, however."

"Well they aren't hats now, are they?" Alice said, wrinkling her nose.

"Not for the people but for the land."

"I thought those would be clouds."

"HA! Dear Alice, the clouds would make very poor hats indeed. They leak all sorts of water and get the earth wet."

"Then the trees would be hats?"

"Hardly, the leaves make for too many holes."

"Hats can have holes in them," Alice huffed, crossing her arms over her yellow dress.

"Not if there one of mine!" The Mad Hatter said, "My hats are well made and I should be making them."

"But then I would be enjoying the festival alone," Alice said, "And then wouldn't be enjoying it because I'd be lonely."

"Your new friend is here to play," huffed Jefferson.

"He hates the Festivals though," Alice said, "The people doing them scare him."

"Can't help that they all give me the creeps," Will said, wandering over to them. Hatter glared as Alice wandered towards a tent with strange designs. Peeking in, she slipped inside as the Hatter snapped.

"You could, since it's your job to keep this one entertained!"

"My job is to protect her!" Will said sourly, "It's your job to do as the queen says and right now it's keep her from the court members that are not so kind."

"Fine, then let us get on with our business!" Hatter turned around to face Alice, "Alice, are you read-?"

Only to not see her at all.

"Where did she go?" Will panicked, "Alice!"

Will raced into the crowd, looking at each open booth. Hatter glanced at the tent with intricate designs as he muttered, "You wee Lassie. You'll be the death of me and your very heartless friend."

"Keep your shoulders up! You're position needs to be up straight."

Alison was tempted to bang to piano keys as she heard Avenant's scolding. It had been the third time he had said this and she couldn't possibly hold her back any straighter. Avenant had been pacing around her, clearly on edge as he said, "This piece is to be rich and flowing. There won't be any instruments playing with you, so it has to be flawless."

Alison froze at that and she said, "What?"

"You heard me," Avenant said, walking behind her as he sharply tapped her back, "Keep it straight."

"No, not that," Alison said, "That's as straight as it's ever going to be. Why will I be playing alone?"

"Because that's what a definition of a solo is." Avenant said shortly.

"Why am I playing one?" Alison asked her voice sharp, "You had a soloist-!"

"Dianne dropped out of the program," Avenant said sharply, "This piece will be taking place of her solo."

Alison gaped before watching Avenant walk away from her. Before he could say anything else, the bell rang, signaling the end of the session. Avenant almost growled, waving his hand as he said, "Go on! I want that piece practiced to perfection before the rehearsal!"

Alison made a small face before picking up her music pieces. Putting them carefully in the folder, she hurried and left Professor Avenant by himself. Walking down the hallway, she noticed Dianne sitting in the hallway looking upset. Alison bit her lip as people began to walk through the corridor. Alison wandered over to her and said, "Hey? Are you okay?"

"Oh!" she jumped a bit as, "You're… Alison. Avenant's new Cavia."

"Yeah, I'd rather you didn't keep calling me that," Alison said wrinkling her nose, "I looked that up the other day and it's the Italian word for rat."

"Guinea pig actually," sniffed Dianne.

"Same difference." Alison said with a huff but then added calmly, "You left practice yesterday in a rush… and Avenant said you're dropping out…"

Dianne wrinkled her nose as she said, "It's not like he gave me much of a choice…"

Alison sat down next to her, resting her folder on her lap. People walked by as Dianne sniffled. Tilting her head, Alison asked, "Why? What did Avenant do?"

"Not him… My father," Dianne said, hiccuping, "He's moving us to New York."

Alison looked surprised as Dianne wiped her eyes saying, "He got a job there… a good one. He's transferring me to a private school… the music program is very good but everyone in the program needs to be in choir."

"So they won't let you in unless you've been in choir?"

"I need a sample of me singing in the concert," Dianne said, heartbroken, "I've been working with Miss Krystal but it's been hard with my exams and homework… Dad told me I would have to leave anyway so I might as well just quit."

Dianne burst out into tears as Alison reached to touch her shoulder. However a female voice called out saying, "Dianne, why don't you go calm yourself in my office?"

Alison looked over to see Miss Krystal walking towards them. Dianne looked over at Miss Krystal as she said soothingly, "I'll be there in a minute. Go get yourself cleaned up."

Dianne nodded as she got up and hurried away. Miss Krystal watched her sympathetically as she said, "Poor Dianne, she's been having such a rough time."

"It seems so," Alison said, sighing.

"I'm sorry, I don't think we have been formally introduced," Miss Krystal said, "My name is Miss Krystal, I am the music teacher and choir director."

"Alison Kinsleigh," Alison said quickly, "My name, I mean…"

Miss Krystal laughed and said, "Well it is a pleasure to meet you. I've heard from the grapevine that you have gotten the solo this concert."

"So I just found out," Alison said with a sigh.

"Well I look forward to hearing you," Miss Krystal said, grinning, "I was wondering-!"

"Alison! Is that you?!"

Alison looked around to see Snow walking down the hallway. As she reached them, Snow looked surprised as she said, "Katie! I didn't know you had a free period now."

"I do, my usual student for today is out sick," Miss Krystal said smoothly, "I just ran into Miss Kinsleigh as I was coming to check on another student."

"Well I hope you don't mind if I talk to her a minute." Snow said, smiling warmly as she stood next to Alison. Miss Krystal shook her head as she said, "Not at all. I have something to go attend to anyway. Alison, it was very nice to meet you. Good luck on Friday!"

Miss Krystal walked away as Snow put a hand on her shoulder. Alison looked up as Snow as she said with a smile, "Going to try choir next?"

"No!" Alison said, looking slightly mortified.

Snow giggled and said, "I'm just kidding. Come on, let's go talk in my class room."

Alison smiled, walking with Snow down to her classroom door. It was empty, the students obviously off for lunch or recess. Snow wandered in towards her desk, saying, "She means well, but Miss Krystal has a tendency to be very competitive with Professor Avenant and vice versa. She's known for getting his students into her choir."

"Well she shouldn't with me," Alison said, "I can't sing."

Snow looked at her with an incredulous look as she said, "I'm sure that's not true…"

"Maybe, but I don't like to so let's just leave it at that," Alison said in a huff as Snow laughed softly. Alison looked around the classroom awkwardly as she said, "So… what did you want to talk to me about? Is something wrong?"

"It's nothing like that!" Snow said quickly, "It's just… I know we may not be as close, but I hope you know that Charming and I here to help. With anything you need-!"

"Henry told you about Operation Jumper," Alison said, disheartened.

Snow looked surprised as Alison looked a little upset as Snow came back around the desk saying, "Not exactly- we had found out about it. I understand if you don't want our help-!"

"No!" Alison said, quickly, "That's not it!"

Snow looked surprised as Alison shifted, staring at the ground. Finally looked back up, Alison seemed to have calmed a bit as she said, "I had thought about it, debating. But when I had heard you and Charming wanted to leave, I didn't want to ask and make you feel obligated-!"

"Alison," Snow grasped Alison's hands, "It was just us talking… we didn't have our hearts set on this. We just wanted to think about our opportunities. Our family is the most important thing to us and… you are a part of that family... we couldn't never bear the thought of separating you and Henry… we just had another person to think about too."

Alison gaped as Snow beamed a bit. Alison slowly but surely let surprise creep into her face as she said, "You're pregnant."

"Two months," Snow said, "According to the doctor. But don't tell anyone, please, we want to surprise people."

"Not a word," Alison said, her face a little distant as if trying to comprehend what she had just been told, "Not a word… Congratulations. And don't be mad, please, I just need to keep this quiet for now."

"It's quite alright, you are forgiven," Snow teased, lightly as Alison rolled her eyes a bit. Alison then looked at the clock saying, "I have to go… I promised Henry I would meet him for lunch. If I don't get there soon, he promised to lock me in Granny's diner till I had eaten."

"Okay," Snow said, "We're anxiously awaiting your concert!"

Alison smiled before quickly turning and leaving the classroom. Snow smiled a moment before letting it fall so she could sigh. Glancing over towards a picture of her family, she couldn't help but wonder if Emma's reaction would be as aloof as Alison's… the two were alike in more ways than one after all.

"Boston!"

Emma winced as Regina turned in her chair. They were in Regina's house, Piper meddling with some wires near the electrical box. There were magic books open on Regina's desk. The power was out, thanks to something blowing a fuse or something. Emma nodded as she said, "Yeah, or some other town besides here."

"I didn't think they would be the ones to think of leaving," Regina said, obviously in shock, "Please tell me you're not considering going-!"

"No," Emma said, "It's not what Henry wants. He wants to go to the Enchanted Forest badly… I doubt he would change his mind now."

"Perhaps telling him there is no video games in the Enchanted Forest would," Piper said, flipping a switch and more lights turned on around the room. Regina sighed as he said, "I think that did the trick."

"Seems so," Emma said looking around Regina turned her attention back towards her work. Piper shut the electrical box before walking back over towards the exit of her home office. Emma made a face as she said, "But I wonder what would make them what to leave? I mean, they didn't even talk about it with us. If Henry hadn't said anything-!"

"They probably weren't seriously considering it," Regina said dismissively as she flipped through a book. Emma made a face, as if she was unsure. However, she changed topic saying, "I should get back to work. Text me if you figure out any new revelations on the so called potion of redemption."

"Will do," Regina said, already placing her attention on her work. Emma walked over to the door where Piper was getting his coat on, looking melancholy. Emma noticed this, quickly putting on her own coat as she asked, "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," Piper said, his voice impassive. Emma frowned as he opened the door to leave. Emma followed him as she said, "You know, I think I'm going to make it illegal to use the word fine…"

"Coming from the woman who used that word on a daily when we were together," Piper said as they descended the stairs. Emma froze a moment before following after him saying, "Well come on, could you blame me? And don't try deflecting, I can tell there's something wrong."

Emma and Piper had made it back to the outdoors, walking side by side with each other. Piper made a face as Emma waited for a few moments. Linking her arm with his, Emma asked softly, "Is this about what I said about going back to the Enchanted Forest?"

Piper's mouth quirked as Emma continued hesitatively, "Is it because you had planned on staying here or was it because you were planning on going…. Home."

"What do you mean by home?"

"You know what I mean," Emma said, "Antic… you know, I'm sure Henry wouldn't mind going back with you for a while-."

"Emma, I left that place on extremely bad terms," Piper said tersely, "Spell or not, anyone that may have cared about me has long since stopped."

"You don't know that," Emma said, as they walked out onto the main sidewalk, "I mean, look at me! I should have hated you for every second for the rest of my life, and instead…"

Emma stopped herself, a looked of surprise coming on her face. Piper slowed them, pulling on Emma's arm so she was facing him. Piper looked at her with slightly narrowed eyes as he asked, "Instead what?"

Emma felt a jolt inside of her, a jolt of instinct that made her act. It was something that rarely happened but still ensued, especially when it came to him. Emma leaned in and kissed him briefly on the lips. Piper watched her stunned as she backed away saying, "That…"

Before Piper could even think to move, Emma found herself dashing towards the sheriff's station with increasingly red cheeks.

"Hello?" Alice asked, looking around curiously "Is anyone in here?"

It seemed empty the tent, at least of people. There were books stacked everywhere, pillows and blankets thrown everywhere. Alice couldn't help but think of Jefferson's hat room in regards to the mess. Alice walked over to a particular book and touched the cover.

"What in the worlds are you doing?"

Alice whirled around, looking to see a man dressed in a green suit. His dark hair was messy and his eyes were curious. Alice could have sworn he looked like a teacher that had just rolled out of bed. Alice folded her hands in front of her as she said, "I'm sorry…. I was curious to see what the book was."

"Did you know some of these books are cursed?" the man said a twinkle in his eye.

"Cursed?!" Alice was stricken as the man stooped down to her level. He nodded saying, "Yes…. If you were to look inside a cursed book, your tongue would be twisted all your life."

He picked up the book and examined it with a weak smile. Flipping open he spun it around to face Alice, causing her to squeak and cover her eyes. The man chuckled as he said, "Luckily for you, this is not one of those books."

Alice peeked from behind her hands, seeing the pretty pictures on the page. Letting her hands fall, Alice huffed, "That was quite a mean trick!"

"Not intended to be a trick, my lady," the man said sincerely, "Some of these books are cursed. But those are usually found by the vandals that come in messing up my shop. Usually the bright creative ones find my picture books."

Alice smiled, as if she was amused. Turning her body around and around, Alice said sweetly, "Her Majesty said that flattery is a good way to hide deceit."

"Or creates the most wonderful friendships," The man said, "My name Milady is the Mock Turtle."

"Everyone has such unusual names," sighed Alice, "Or maybe it's me that is unusual."

"Might I have it to determine this for myself?"

"You may hear it but you can't have it," Alice said, stilling herself, "The Queen gave me this name and without it, I have none."

"May I hear it then and let it pass back to you?"

"Alice," Alice said smiling, "Alice Little."

"Well then," the Mock Turtle said smiling, "Shall I tell you a story?"

"Alison! Come down, dinner is ready!"

The piano playing stopped as Granny heard the shuffling in the rooms above her. Serving the two plates the food, Granny brought them over to the kitchen table as she heard someone racing down the stairs. Alison wandered into the kitchen, dressed in leggings and a stripped tunic. Granny raised her brows in amusement as she said, "Couldn't stand the uniform anymore?"

"I can't stand the skirt anymore," huffed Alison as she made her was to the seat. Granny chuckled as she said, "You're going to have problems when we get back to the Enchanted Forest. Majority of the woman still wear skirts."

"Well you are all getting a rude awakening," Alison said with an airiness that was unlike her, "I made sure Chess made any outfits with pants."

"You and this generation," Granny said sitting down beside her, "What is wrong with skirts and dresses?"

"They rip, they tear, they trip you up when you are trying to run from soldiers and mercenaries," Alison said casually as she mixed up her vegetables and rice. Granny shook her head as Alison began to eat. Cutting up her chicken, Granny said, "You know, you're not exactly running from anyone here."

"Yet," Alison said, "It's only a matter of time before we have yet another adventure that involves me running."

"I think you just like running," Granny joked.

Alison looked thoughtful as she said, "Well that certainly doesn't help, I suppose."

Granny laughed as Alison took a sip of her milk. Granny watched her with a warm affection on her face. Alison had her mouthful of food when Granny said, "You know how proud I am of you, right?"

"Hmm?" Alison looked at Granny as she swallowed her food. Alison's face was slightly confused as Granny reached out and grasped her hand. Alison unconsciously grabbed it as Granny said, "I know it's not been easy for you… you spent a lot of years either running from soldiers or getting tossed around from home to home. I know after all that was said and done, it wasn't ever going to be easy to be open with people."

Alison's face went shy as she stared down at the table for a few moments. Granny continued as she said, "I know you or some other people may not think so, but I've seen the change in you. After all, the little girl I knew would never go running to the Evil Queen's defense."

Alison made a face as she said, "That little girl wouldn't do a lot… and frankly I don't feel like I've really changed…"

"But you have," Granny said, "You've opened up… instead of running off through that door to get away from this place, you're staying to help people find their happy endings. "

The phone rang as Granny sighed. Getting up, she wandered into the living room to pick up the phone. Alison's face fell, as if remembering something she'd rather forget. Twirling her fork on her plate, Alison said, "That's because I know what it's like not to have one…"

"So you have read the Tales of the Original Mage!"

Alice was sitting on one of the cushions in the tent. Alice shrugged as she said, "It was in my dream. The White Knight told me about him."

"Ahh storytelling," The Mock Turtle said, closing the book in his hand, "It is the highlight of all little children's lives. Or so it used to be…"

"It's still the highlight of mine," Alice said, her voice a little hopeful, "Whatever that means…."

"It means it is very important," The Mock Turtle said.

"It is," Alice said, "Will you read one to me?"

"Of course!" The Mock Turtle said, "What kind of storyteller would I be if I didn't tell stories."

"A poor one," Alice commented.

The Mock Turtle chuckled, "Too true… well then, I have a story just for you."

The Mock Turtle walked away, opening a trunk under a thick quilt. Rummaging through the trunk, he said, "I was bequeathed this treasure a while back… I believe it was… one of the first notes from the Original Mages collections."

"The first notes?" Alice questioned as he pulled out the book. The man let the trunk close as he wandered back to his pillows. The Mock Turtle looked at her surprised as he said, "My, you know little. The Original Mage wrote stories for each generation of Queens and Mages. These stories eventually were stored in our worlds Compendium."

"The Great Calendar?"

"Exactly," The Mock Turtle said, "That is stored deep in the Fortress of Ruins. Only the three Queens and the Mage can enter."

The Mock Turtle opened the book, looking through it with soft eyes. He said, "My great teacher found this book. He passed it on to me when he had fallen ill."

"I'm sorry."

"Whatever for? It was his time to depart with Death onwards," the Mock Turtle said surprised, "Death is unavoidable; he doesn't like those who keep him waiting unnecessarily."

"Is he a person?"

"He is who is his," the Mock Turtle said, "He is as he is."

Alice frowned a bit as the Mock Turtle opened the book and began to read.

"-And so begins the Tale of the End Annuals of the Last Mage. I write this with a heavy confused heart because I know not the actual tale that this wee lad may bring us. The only thing I can give are the cemented vagueties that all versions give. The Mage will come to us in a tunnel of fire, green and cold to behold. The door will let the Mage in only once the Mage is saved from what he must die. The Queen of White and Red will be in war that both wish could never end. The Bloody Queen of Hearts will not be, for she will come later than he. This world's guardian of magic will choose only he when he does something special regardless of greed. The Mage will be rebirthed to the land, the Last Mage forever he shall stand. He will bring the repair to what I have caused; The Queens of Midlands shall no longer be so the Mage can defeat the enemy of conceit. The Last Queen of Hearts will be the opposite the first had been: Benevolent to Malevolent to malevolent to benevolent. But beware, my glorious wonderland, your peace that will be brought will come at price that the price had been. The End Annuals will last as long as sixteen! When the sixteenth year has struck, the Mage will great his death with a heavy heart. For once magic comes, it must return: that is the deal we have earned. The Guardian will take the magic to its grave as Death will come and do the same-."

"Alice, you wee thing! I think you have caused quite enough trouble!"

Alice squeaked as The Mad Hatter scooped her up. She giggled as he looked into her little face crossly. Shaking his head, the Mad Hatter said, "That friend of yours got lost in this mess looking for you. Come, the main event is going to start soon."

"But the story-!"

"Is done," the Mock Turtle said, "I'm afraid the pages onward… are not in good condition. Farewell, My Lady. May we meet again soon."

"Goodbye, Mock Turtle," Alice said sweetly as the Mad Hatter took her from the tent. Alice was deeply pondering as The Mad Hatter said, "Where did that mumbling man go?"

"I think you mean bumbling."

"No, I said mumbling quite deliberately."

"Who's the Mage?"

"I beg your pardon," The Mad Hatter said sharply. Alice winced, but looked at Hatter with curiosity.

"Who is the Mage?" Alice asked, "I know her Majesty the Queen. I dreamed of the other two. But who is the Mage now?"

"There is no mage," The Mad Hatter said heatedly, "Hasn't been for a very long time."

The Mad Hatter kissed Alice, before hugging her saying, "Don't speak of that story to anyone. Not even her Majesty. It will only cause more problems for you and the Turtle. Understood?"

Alice nodded and said, "You're talking about the Marquise, aren't you. Does she hate me?"

"She hates everyone," The Mad Hatter said, as he set Alice down, "Probably because everyone hates her."

Avenant growled as he stared at his music.

He was sitting up in the balcony, quite alone. He knew not what time it was and neither did he care. With the Queen breathing down his neck and the recent mysterious drop out of his student, Avenant was in quite a state. Sighing, Avenant ran his fingers through his hair.

"Professor?"

Avenant's mouth quirked up as he heard someone come up the stairs. Readjusting his papers, Avenant said, "Is there something you need, Alison?"

Alison smirked as she walked over to him as she said, "A less cranky teacher?"

"That is not remotely funny."

"No seriously, Miss Gerson actually was cranky today," Alison said mildly, "It was really unusual."

"Probably because the Principal and she were fighting," Avenant said, impatiently, "Nothing I can do about that."

"No, but I came up here to play," Alison said, with a sigh, "Granny had to go into the diner, something about a bursting pipe so I am left on my own."

"Kathryn is busy?"

"Very much so," Alison said, "All the people that I stay with are mysteriously missing so I figured I would come here to practice."

"Well then," Avenant said, "Come sit down."

Avenant stood up as Alison looked nervously at him. He walked away from the piano as she said, "I didn't mean to interrupt-!"

"You're not," Avenant said abruptly, "I need a change."

Alison sat down at the piano as Avenant pulled something out from underneath the piano. Alison scanned the music sheet, seeing that it was once again Swan Lake.

"You seem to like Swan Lake," Alison said, examining the music.

"Every concert, I learn a new ballet," Avenant said, pulling out a violin and tuning it, "Or play depending on the mood I'm in. If I can't master certain pieces by certain points, I'll know that my concert choices are too difficult for my students."

"How do you reckon that?"

"If I can't learn the play, then that means I was too ambitious," Avenant said, "I found that while I am struggling, so are the members of my program."

"Ahhh," Alison said with a smile, "Clever. So how are you doing with this?"

"I am doing well," Avenant said, irritated, "Which is why I am perplexed as to why Dianne has quit so suddenly."

"Her father's moving," Alison said, grimacing, "Her school that she's transferring to needs her to have a commitment in choir."

Avenant froze as he looked at Alison in surprise. She tapped her fingers lightly on the keys as he asked, "What?"

"Yeah, it was a school in New York," Alison said, "Believe me, it's not like she wanted to quit. Things just got… complicated."

"Where did you hear this?"

"From her own mouth," Alison said, shrugging, "I saw her crying in the hallway…"

Avenant made a face as he looked thoughtful. Alison glanced up at him and said, "Are you ready?"

Avenant nodded as Alison positioned herself. Playing the music, Alison heard Avenant begin to play.

She was officially about to envy this man.

His playing was amazing, flowing right along with her music on the piano. She would have to admit, as they moved along through the piece, that he was better on the piano bit a teeny little bit. However, his playing was as good as her own and he seemed to be barely trying. As they approached the final note, Alison stilled her fingers as she watched him finish flawlessly. He let out a sigh as Alison watched him thoughtfully. She finally asked the question that was in her mind.

"Can you play every instrument without fail?"

Avenant smirked before putting down the violin. He shook his head as he said, "Not without fail Alison. Without failure, we cannot learn."

"Well," Alison said, "Then can I ask you something?"

"You just did."

"Why are you having me practice the piano?"

Avenant frowned, looking at her intently. Alison shifted saying with a bit of a stammer, "It's not that I don't like playing the piano. It's just that we never work on the violin together…"

"Because I am more than confidant that if I gave you anything to practice, you would be able to play it to perfection in a heartbeat," Avenant said as he put the violin in the case. Shutting and locking the case, Avenant looked back in her direction. She looked stunned, but then she put on her poker face and said, "Well, I will get out of your hair and let you practice. I will see you tomorrow, Professor."

"Goodnight Alison." Avenant said, sitting back down at his piano. Alison walked into the dark stairwell but paused before going down the stairs. She heard him begin to play again, the beautiful music filling the hall. Alison couldn't help but smile warmly and shyly before wandering down the stairs.

"Welcome to our Main Event!"

There was a loud cheering as Alice clapped from her seat. She and the Queen were sitting high up, surrounded by members of the other court. The Marquise clapped, shooting Alice a dirty look in the process. Alice frowned as Will made a face. Cora didn't seem to notice as the clapping died down, as the Gryphon grinned saying, "Very good, very good! Now, as you all know, there is no better than to start a performance than with a little musical game. Now, can I have a volunteer from the audience?!"

Many people raised their hand and called out their names. However, there was one loud suggestion that came from the direction of the Marquise.

"I volunteer the Queen's Pet!"

Everyone fell silent looking in the direction of the court. The woman glanced up at Cora and Alice, asking with a sick sweetness, "If that is alright… You're Majesty?"

Cora had no emotion cross her face as she nodded her head deliberately. She then looked at Alice expectantly. Alice felt a rush of anxiety as she slowly but surely left her seat. Will went to follow however Cora raised her hand. He stopped in mid-step, watching Alice descend the steps.

The Gryphon himself looked nervous as he said, "Well! Everyone give a round of applause for the Marquise of Spades volunteer, Lady Alice Little!"

Everyone clapped loudly as Alice made her way to the Gryphon. The Gryphon bowed low and kissed the young girls hand as he said quickly and quietly, "Just smile and play along."

Alice watched him carefully as he said loudly, "Now, my dear, pick your playing partner from our pearl plateau!"

There were some booing and the Gryphon huffed as he said, "Well it is the Mad Hatter that was better at his twisting tongue of tongue twisters!"

There was laughter in the ring audience as Alice looked at the Mad Hatter nervously. He nodded his head at her, smiling rather mischievously. Alice smiled back as she stepped forward to the table, seeing many instruments she had seen some of the court carry. However, none of them struck her fancy and instead she said to the Gryphon, "I'd rather have the piano if I could."

"I don't know?" The Gryphon said surprised but remained amused, "Can you?"

"I can," Alice said firmly as some people in the audience snickered. The Gryphon grinned as he said, "Very well! See if you can guess the key and notes that I play on the piano without looking! Not a soul has been able to guess them all correctly."

The Gryphon sat by a piano that the other workers had pushed out. Alice waited as he played a note.

"Key 81," Alice said, "F."

There was a loud horn blown as the audience clapped and whispered. The Gryphon shushed them as he played another.

"Key 1, A," Alice said immediately.

Another horn was blown in congratulations as the audience cheered. The Mad Hatter grinned at her as she couldn't help but grin back. The Gryphon quieted the room as he played several notes quickly.

"Key 40, C. Key 39, B. Key 38, B Flat," Alice said thoughtfully.

Alice heard the horn exploded with sound. Everyone cheered and clapped, much to the Marquise of Spades disdain. Alice curtsied deep as the Gryphon shot up saying, "What a beautiful clever little thing, a credit to her Majesty!"

Everyone cheered in agreement as the Gryphon excused Alice. Alice didn't hurry, knowing very well that she wasn't supposed to. The Marquise stared at Alice hardly as Alice stopped by her and curtsied saying, "Thank you for your Volunteer, Marquise."

Alice made it back to her seat and sat down. She looked up at Cora hopefully, only to see that Cora wasn't looking at her. In fact, she didn't look as if she had been fazed at all. Alice's heart fell as she looked back towards the Gryphon.

She had displeased her.

"I hope this isn't only opera music."

Grace and Ava looked at Nick in disbelief. They were sitting in the auditorium as people were finding their seats. Henry was looking through the program while Nick looked a little put out. Ava glared at him while Nick protested, "What? You know I was never fond of that kind of stuff."

"I know, but this a concert, not a play," Ava said, offended, "And Alison's been working hard for this."

"Besides, it's the only normal kid thing she gets to do," Grace said, staring at Nick in protest.

"Our Operations aren't considered normal by now?" Henry questioned, smiling wryly.

"For us, but not for everyone else," Grace said, looking at him shyly.

"Who care about what anyone else thinks?" Ava said, narrowing her eyes, "Just as long as we are happy."

Grace shrugged as she turned her attention back towards the stage. Ava made a face as Nick looked around at the people moving around nervously. Leaning over to his sister, he whispered sharply, "Are you sure we shouldn't tell-!"

"I'm only going to say anything if he's going to show up again," Ava said in a hushed urgent tone, "We haven't seen him in weeks."

"Please, everyone! Find your seats before our performance begins."

Alison peeked out from behind the curtain to see the large group of people. She was wearing a black sweater with nice black trouser pants that Kathryn had bought for her. Her boots were the same ones she had worn for the wedding, refusing everyone's offers to get her anything else. No matter what, Alison could never her bring herself to be as girly as some of the other girls were dressed. It was bad enough people were going to be staring at her while she was playing, she didn't want to be worrying about what fancy dress to wear.

"You look nice."

Alison looked back, seeing Fife standing there in a tuxedo. He was grinning at her, holding the clarinet in hand as Alison said, "Thanks. So do you."

Alison glanced back out into the audience, her ponytail falling in very loose curls. Swallowing, she heard Fife come up next to her as he asked, "So… are you nervous?"

"Nervous?" Alison said, spotting Emma with whole group she had invited minus one. Well… minus three in reality but the one she actually hoped would be there. Alison bit her lip as she said, "Maybe…"

"Missing the Golds?"

"What?" Alison looked thrown off as she let the curtain fall. Fife suddenly looked nervous as he said, "Sorry, I don't know what you call them, parents or guardians-!"

"Oh," Alison said, "No, the Golds are fine… I don't know what to call them actually, it's not like my parents are actually dead, just not here… But to answer your question, yes I miss them. I am really glad they're not here right now though…"

Fife looked surprised as she let out a shaky sigh. Fife couldn't stop himself from asking the obvious question, "Why?"

"Because…" Alison said, "I've never liked being the center of attention. Bad things usually occur… if this went south I wouldn't be happy if they saw it."

"It won't go south," Fife said, comfortingly, "You play better than most people I know."

Alison looked at him fully this time, watching him grin as he said, "And trust me, I know a lot of people."

Alison laughed before Max said, "Fife! We need you back here a minute."

Fife gave her one more smile before disappearing. Alison smiled remained as she glanced back out into the audience hopefully. This time, she saw Regina sitting down next to Emma, chattering away. Alison smiled as she watched them. Emma just so happened to look her way and raised both hands in the air, giving her two thumbs up and the goofiest grin she had ever seen. Regina looked her way as well as she waved with a smile. Alison waved back before letting the curtain fall. Alison turned and nearly jumped out of her skin to see Avenant behind her.

"Are you ready?"

"Yes," Alison said, "As ready as I'll ever be."

"Good, then let's get back with the group," Avenant said, turning to meet up with the others back stage. Alison nodded and went to follow him. However she stopped and said, "Professor Avenant?"

Avenant looked at her serious expression as she said, "Last I checked, rats had tails."

Alison was in complete shock when he grinned, something she had never seen him do before. Turning around he walked away saying, "That is true, however Guinea Pigs do not."

"Do you think she's nervous?"

Piper looked at Emma, who was still staring at the stage. Piper shrugged saying, "Probably. But then again, according to the rumor mill in Antic, she used to be one of the Queen's Pets. Performing was something she had to do."

"I know, but that was for a Queen that was psychotic," Regina said in a huff, "That doesn't exactly leave good memories."

"May I have everyone's attention please?"

They looked towards the stage to see the Principal standing on the stage, dressed in a brown suit. Fiddling with his bowtie the man looked out into the crowd nervously as the audience quieted. The Principal smiled as he said, "Good, good… thank you folks for coming out and showing your support. I have a few announcements before we begin. First, please no flash photography. If you are going to take pictures, please be respectful for the people around you. Secondly, during the performance, please keep as quiet as you can, these students have been practicing very hard and we'd like the record to not have people's conversations about the cold weather on it!"

People chuckled a bit as the Principal smiled. The Principal said, "Oh yes! And Avenant wanted me to make an announcement. One of his students will be moving out to New York City, joining a Music Intensive school. Sadly she will not be performing tonight, however he wanted everyone to attend our Thanksgiving Festival Concert in a few weeks. There she will be singing. Miss Dianne, could you please stand up so we can wish you all good luck?!"

Everyone began to clap as the light pointed towards Dianne. She stood up, tears and smiles of appreciation on her face. She sat back down as the light pointed back to the Principal as he said, "Yes, Good Luck Dianne. We are all very happy for you. Now without further a due, enjoy our Concerto Introduttiva!"

The audience clapped for him as he made his was off the stage. The lights in the audience turned off as the lights for the stage turned on. The curtains parted and revealed the students already sitting in their seats. There was a shadow in the back of the stage, not illuminated by the lights in the front. Every student was in position, as if waiting for a cue. Emma peered and frowned when she could not see Alison or the teacher. She looked at Regina quizzically as Regina shrugged. However, a light beautiful piano chord made them look back towards the stage.

The beautiful sound had faded when the woodwinds played a fluttering note, reaching a crescendo before fading away. A series of beautiful notes went from very high down to the middle range of the piano, before the player had let it fade again. This time the woodwinds and the string sections played in a similar fashion to the first. Once that had faded, the piano played a series of chords that were pleasing to the ear. The pianist faded, allow the brass section and percussion to join, soon everyone playing a simple yet melodic chord. The rest of orchestra faded as the piano kept playing.

It was quiet, the piano playing. It was simple and yet held an emotional air to it. Emma let her mouth drop slightly as it continued on in such a manner. The lights brightened in the back to reveal Alison sitting on the piano, playing without flaw. At least, Emma didn't thinks there was. Occasionally the strings added emphasis to the playing. The music was heartbreaking, the sadness and bittersweet notes filling the air as the string and clarinets joined her. However the piano was the strongest instrument, making Snow wipe her eyes at the emotional attachment. Alison seemed to have been entranced in her playing, the rest of the room simply not existing. The music reached a small crescendo before the piano began it soft simple playing once more before drifted off into nothingness.

Alison's heart nearly stopped as there was silence in the auditorium. She refused to look up, her hands still in position. Slowly but surely, she placed her hands on her lap, breathing in deep. Then, clapping erupted in the auditorium, causing her to look out. Avenant had walked onto the stage, smiling sincerely. He stood in front of his podium, and nodded towards the audience. Turning toward them, he signaled the smallest okay, letting Alison's heart be at the slightest ease.

What Alison didn't realize that worlds away, Baelfire and Jane sat together. They were in a room with no windows, lights from the flowers and the mirror being their only salvation. They were sitting on the bed that had many quilts. Jane wiped tears from her eyes as Baelfire looked on proudly. They watched as the clapping in the room had faded. Jane looked at Baelfire confused as she said, "Not that I'm complaining… but how are we looking at Alison? No spell can do that."

Baelfire lifted up a small piece of paper as he said, "I didn't look for Alison."

Jane took it, staring at him baffled before reading it. Her eyes looked surprised as she said, "Henry? He told you to look for him…"

"He is a very, very smart boy," Baelfire said, "Sent that with Peter… I guess he knew how we got the message across. He made sure to sit in the front so we could see."

Jane smiled, tears falling again as she said, "He is a good friend… she's lucky."

"So are we," Baelfire said, staring intently in it, "So are we…"

"CONGRATULATIONS!"

Alison nearly jumped out of her skin as the lights flicked on, revealing everyone inside Granny's diner. Everyone clapped as Alison grinned at Henry. Her friends grinned back as she said, "I had feeling, and your lying is terrible."

Everyone laughed as Henry shrugged saying, "It's hard to lie to you."

"Alright everyone!" Granny said loudly, "Let's fill our plates up with food! I didn't work my tail off just to have you all eat it cold!"

Everyone chuckled as they all migrated to the food. The children raced to the counters as Granny walked around the counter. Alison made her way over to her and hugged her saying, "Thank you Granny."

"You deserve it," Granny said heartfelt.

"Aww, is your soft side showing Granny?" Red said with a grin. Granny released her as she said, "I have one! I just don't feel the need to show it all the time."

August snuck up behind her and gave her a tight hug saying, "Excellent job, Lizzy."

Alison giggled as he kissed her cheek. He let her go as Alison said, "You need to shave!"

"Nah, you're just fussy."

Regina sat in a corner with her dinner. Kathryn noticed this and walked over with her own plate and asked, "Mind if I sit with you?"

"Sure, go right on ahead," Regina said as Kathryn sat down with her food. Regina looked around as said, "I'm surprised Frederick is not with you."

"He and my father are going through the census, trying to locate any additional nobles in the town," Kathryn said smoothly, "He wanted the Charmings to have a break tonight."

"Well that was nice of them," Regina said before taking a bite of her dinner.

"Well considering the mayor still needs to be chosen, he wants to make sure the replacement is a good one," Kathryn said.

"He's not considering the position for himself?"

"Not really, my father is 'taking a break' until we return to the enchanted forest." Kathryn said, "Much like you it seems."

"I have no interest in holding public office anymore," Regina said, glancing at Henry with Piper, "I just want my son to be proud of me."

"And he is," Kathryn reassured, and then she grinned, "And you seem to have made a little bit of a friend in Alison."

"Yeah, well…" Regina said, "I think we've reached a mutual understand."

"That you both are similar in ways you don't like?" Kathryn teased.

"We are not alike," Regina said, stubbornly.

"Really?" Kathryn said with a grin as Alison came to the table with a plate that had all the same food as Regina's. Kathryn's grin remained as Regina looked at Kathryn saying, "There will be no comments from the Peanut Gallery."

"What?" Alison said confused as Kathryn said, "Oh nothing. Eat your food."

Alison made a face but looked at Regina saying, "So did you get your electricity back up and working?"

"Yes, Piper fixed it today," Regina said, then added slight sarcastically, "So Snow said she is expecting… shocker."

"Regina!" Kathryn said surprised.

"What? Do you know how many times I caught them kissing when they thought no one was looking," Regina said with sass, "I couldn't count it on our fingers and toes combined."

"I didn't need to know that," Alison said making a face.

"Well neither did I," Regina said, a tint of amusement in her voice, "Now we both can suffer."

Alison noticed Emma slip out the front door while everyone was talking away. Alison took a bite of her lasagna before saying quickly, "I'll be right back!"

Alison raced off as Kathryn reached out to grab her. Kathryn made a face as Alison made her way out of the diner. Kathryn shook her head as Regina said amused, "She's not going to finish her dinner, is she?"

"Not at all."

Alison slowly walked over to Emma, who was leaning against the fence, staring into the street. Alison noticed her deep thoughtful look as she said, "You know, I'm pretty sure there more interesting conversations inside."

"Yeah," Emma said, "I think I need a little break from that."

"Mind if I join you?"

"Go right ahead."

Alison stood next to Emma, looking up at her curiously. Staring out into the street, Alison asked, "So I heard Snow is pregnant?"

"Yeah, can you believe that?" Emma said, quickly but not meanly or bitterly.

"You're not upset?"

"No, not really," Emma said, "It's just weird… My brother or sister is going to born almost thirty years apart from me."

"Brother," Alison said affirmatively.

"How do you know?"

"Cause I know these things," Alison said, simply, "Rapunzel's baby will be a girl."

"Intuitive much?" Emma said, teasing.

"If you want to believe me," Alison said, "So you're not bugged about the baby… so what's up. You seem… bothered."

Emma made a face as she said, "Ever do something that makes you wonder why you did it?"

"Too many times," Alison said, honestly, "So what did you do?"

Emma made a face as she said, "I kissed Piper."

Alison made a face, wrinkling her nose as she said, "Oh."

"Don't say it so negatively!" Emma said, slightly bothered.

"So it's definitely not negative," Alison said, quickly, "So why are you wondering why you did it?"

"Because!" Emma said, "I-I don't know, it's just things have been going nicely. What if he doesn't like me or I'm messing things up. We have a good thing going..."

"Clearly, you think you have a very good thing going," Alison said as Emma sighed depressed. Staring into the street, Emma said, "My track record with relationships sucks… and considering he's an ex-!"

"No, the icicle Piper was your ex," Alison said, "He's the real deal, he's not the cursed-!"

Alison stopped in mid sentence, as if something just occurred to her. Looking at Emma with surprise she said, "You don't think he likes you."

"Why would he?" Emma said miserably, "All of the men I've been with end up either dead, missing, or married. What does that say about me?"

Alison stared out into the street, a thoughtful look overcoming her face. They were silent for a while as Alison said, "I guess when you've been in our shoes for as long as we have, that question is inevitable. I think we just have to trust in the people that see the best in us and hope that they know better."

Emma looked at Alison, seeing the nostalgia on her face. Emma smiled a bit as she said, "Is that your way of telling me to tell him how I feel?"

Alison grinned triumphantly as she said, "You don't have to say anything. He's already heard."

"Wha-?" Emma looked back to see Piper leaning against the pole. He smiled wryly at her as she looked back towards the street. Shaking her head with a smile, Emma said, "I hate you so much."

"Mhm," Alison said, "I'll add you to my repertoire."

Alison turned and went to walk inside. Emma turned with her and walked over to Piper somewhat awkwardly. He watched her casually as Emma said, "So… I guess-!"

Piper kissed her, quicker than she thought he was able. Alison made a face as she said, rolling her eyes, "I didn't go INSIDE yet."

Piper pulled away as Emma laughed softly. The door opened and Regina said, "Miss Kinsleigh, get your little self in here. You have dinner to finish."

Piper grinned at Alison saying, "You've been called."

Alison went inside without another word, leaving them by themselves. Piper looked back towards Emma saying, softly, "Now that we've gotten rid of the audience…"

Emma couldn't help but smile as he said, "You're not ruining anything. You never have."

Emma let him kiss her once again, the kiss sweet and modest. They parted once again as Emma looked over his shoulder. She snorted with laughter as Piper said, "What? Was it that bad?"

"No," Emma said, "We didn't get rid of our audience."

Piper looked behind him and saw Henry, Snow, and Charming watching from the window. Piper groaned as he looked back at her saying, "Wonderful. I think your dad looks he's about to end me."

Emma laughed as she said, "Well, shall we go for a walk?"

Piper watched as he said, "Absolutely."

"So your new Cavia was spectacular."

Avenant froze as he heard Miss Krystal walk into his band room. He turned, his own tuxedo jacket sitting on the chair. She was smiling coyly as she said, "Quite a talented little one. Sixth grade, am I right?"

"Yes," Avenant said tersely, "Did you try stealing her already?"

"Avenant, I don't steal," Miss Krystal taunted, "I offer students. It's up to them whether they want to accept."

Avenant stared at her coldly as Miss Krystal continued her walk towards him.

"I thought it was kind of you," Miss Krystal said, standing directly in front of him, "What you did for Dianne."

"I am a professional," Avenant said, indifferently, "Not heartless. She could have told me the circumstance."

"I know," Miss Krystal said, "But she's still young. And you're not the most understanding person to talk to."

Avenant didn't answer as she sighed saying, "When will you understand that it's normal for that age?"

"When you stop taking my students," Avenant said, stiffly. Reached out, she touched his cheek. Avenant jerked his head away as Miss Krystal quickly moved in. Avenant didn't kiss her back, and she parted quickly. Avenant looked at her hardly as he said, "Enjoy your new student… and keep away from mine."

Miss Krystal backed away and left him alone. Fife appeared out from the shadows and said, "She's stubborn… you'd think she know by now you're not interested."

"She's childish," Avenant said indifferently, "So no, she won't."

Fife shifted as he said, "Professor…. We're not going to hurt Alison are we?"

"Fife, don't get attached," Avenant said, "She's under the Queen's radar, so whatever the Queen needs her for we get no say."

Fife's shoulders slumped slightly. He nodded and said softly, "Yes Professor…"

"But Fife," Avenant said his tone remaining the same, "If we can help it, there's no reason for her to get hurt."

Fife looked a little surprised but smiled softly before leaving. Avenant looked down at the papers with alchemy looking signs. Avenant then said softly, "You're perfect… just a little bit longer to be sure…"

"Where did you learn that?"

Alice and Cora were sitting in the nursery, Cora brushing Alice's thick hair. Alice would have looked at Cora; however she knew she would not appreciate it. Alice said, "I don't know what 'that' is, your Majesty."

"The notes," Cora said smoothly, "On the piano."

"Oh," Alice said, "I've always understood sounds. Ever since…"

Alice trailed away, as if she couldn't quite remember. Cora nodded and she said, "I see… it was quite remarkable."

"Really?" Alice said, sounding surprised. Cora laughed as she said, "Yes, you silly child. Why did you not think so?"

"You looked so upset earlier," Alice said, honestly, "I thought you weren't happy with it…"

Cora stopped, letting the comb leave her hair. Alice turned her head, her eyes looking sad. Cora was surprised as she said, "Has this been bugging you? You seemed well this evening."

"Yes," Alice said, honestly, "I didn't want to upset anyone else though-!"

Cora kissed the top of Alice's head. Cora smiled proudly as she said, "I am impressed you were able to be strong. However I was cross with the Marquise, not you."

"Why doesn't she like me?" Alice said sadly, "Hatter said it was because she doesn't like anyone because no one likes her but she keeps picking on me."

"Alice it's not that she doesn't like anyone, especially you," Cora said with a sigh, "It is me she does not respect. She tries to do it subtly by hurting others but it is always intended for me."

Alice bowed her head a bit as she looked disappointed. Cora lifted up her chin and said, "You are my Pet, my prized. Don't ever doubt your worth in my eyes."

"I just…" Alice said her voice meek, "I don't think I've ever had someone like you before…"

"Like me?"

"Like… a mother I suppose…"

Alice turned red, turning away from her shyly. Cora stared at her, quite surprised. She then smiled warmly, saying, "Why don't you go pick something out for us to read, dear Alice. It has been a long day for you I'm sure."

"Okay!" Alice hurried into the other room, leaving Cora alone. Cora sighed as she said, "What I wouldn't give to have you call me that…"

Alice looked on the shelves in the library. One book caught her fancy, pulling it from the shelf. It had strange writing on the front that didn't look familiar. Hugging it to her chest, Alice turned only to stop in motion.

The Marquise of Spades stood not too far from her.

Alice swallowed, curtsying quickly as she said, "Marquise…"

The Marquise stared at her forlorn as she said coldly, "You should have made a fool of yourself… that way you could have escaped this twisted game."

The Marquise then left Alice without another word, leaving the young girl with chills she could not dispel.

"So what play are you working on now?"

Avenant peered over at Alison, who was putting away her new music. He was sitting at his desk, pen in hand as he was finishing some paperwork. Twirling his pen in hand, Avenant said, "The Nutcracker. After all out next concert is holiday related."

"I see," Alison said, stand up with the folder in hand, "But then again, I'm surprised you haven't done it already."

Avenant shrugged as he said, "Well, when you're cursed, you don't get much say in changing things up a bit."

Alison grinned as she said, "Well at least you were still playing music. She could have deprived you of your favorite instrument the piano… or married you to Miss Krystal."

"That is not even remotely funny," Avenant said darkly, but then added a little nicer, "And the piano is not my favorite instrument."

Alison looked at him surprised as she said, "Really? Then what is?"

"I leave that to you to guess," Avenant said smoothly as he wrote something down. Alison looked intrigued as she said, "Well then… I guess I will see you tonight."

"Hmmm," Avenant said, "Alison?"

Alison stopped at the door as she looked at him curiously. Avenant looked at her, tapping his pen on the desk. He finally asked, "Can you sing?"

Alison grinned mischievously as she said, "When you answer my question, I will answer yours."

Alison left Avenant, who couldn't help but smirk. Avenant shook his head and said, "You are a little firecracker."

"Oh I know she is."

Avenant froze, knowing full well who was behind him. Gritting his teeth, Avenant said, "I didn't think you wanted to be seen in public, Your Majesty."

Cora watched after her as she said, "I don't. However, I need to make sure you and I are on the same page. After all, I heard from a little bird that you might be getting second thoughts."

"Not I, but my little bird is getting concerned," Avenant said, shortly, "I need to make sure he didn't bend away from me."

"Well don't let him bend," Cora said, "All he will get is hurt."

"Oh really," Avenant turned his chair towards her, "Are you threatening us?"

"Oh I don't need to," Cora said, smiling coldly, "Alice will bend him and break him before you could even blink. I know that child Avenant and she's not as cute as she seems. She is two faced as any Jack card I have. Believe me I would know."

"Because she betrayed you?"

"Because I taught her that art a long time ago," Cora said triumphantly, "And unlike my other daughter, Alice uses it like a child eating candy."

"Alison!"

Alison looked behind her to see Ava running up to her. Alison smiled as she said, "Hey, I was just going to put my papers away-!"

"Alison I need to talk to you," Ava said, slightly stricken and harassed. Alison looked surprised and alarmed as they walked towards Miss Gerson's classroom. Ava said, "You remember that stunt we played on Gold and I told you I had something to say to you but we ended up doing a hundred other things?"

"Yeah, I figured it wasn't important," Alison said, walking into the empty classroom. Alison put her folder in her desk as Ava said, "Well, I didn't think it was, because I didn't see him again. However, that time we were doing the stunt-!"

"Ahem."

Alison and Ava whirled around seeing someone leaning in the doorway. He was dressed in black slacks, shoes, and a dark button up shirt. His blonde hair fell into his eyes, which were scanning them over. He grinned at Alison, who had tensed up, and said to her, "Well, well, well. What have we here?"

Ava glared and said harassed, "Sage appeared."
