*I'm taking creative liberties with the details of the air show. I've personally never been to one, and certainly not Luke Days in Phoenix, specifically. Consider this an amalgam of what I've read and the experiences of others.

Chapter 11

"He looks happy."

"He does, doesn't he?" I turn to Alice. "I can't remember the last time he smiled like that."

"I think we both know Edward has that effect on most people." She wraps an arm around my waist and squeezes. "Even surly little boys."

I chuckle. "Yeah, I guess you're right."

I watch as Seth stands at the bottom of the ladder talking to Brandon and Jacob sits in the seat in the jet. His huge smile is visible even from where I stand. Edward leans in, pointing out the different things in the cockpit just like he did with Seth. Not once does he look put out or irritated by what I'm sure are a hundred rapid-fire questions.

"He looks pretty comfortable with them, too," Alice says. "I told you there was nothing to worry about."

I narrow my eyes at her, even though she can't see them hidden behind my sunglasses. "Do you get a special thrill from telling me 'I told you so?'"

"Now that you mention it …"

"Stop." I nudge her side, and she giggles.

"I will when you stop worrying so much. Just let it happen, okay?"

"I'm going to try."

"Good. Now, Brandon has seen this one more times than I can count," she says, pointing at the jet, "so he and Jasper want to go see a few more of the exhibits before the aerial show starts. We'll meet up in the VIP tent?"

"Yeah. I'll text you."

"Sounds good." She squeezes me one more time before walking away toward her own family and disappearing into the crowd with them.

I'm left to watch Edward with the boys, and the longer I watch, the more everything just feels … right. I've been so nervous about them meeting him; I hadn't stopped long enough to think about what would happen if it went well.

It looks like I have my answer.

Once I take the obligatory picture, Edward helps Jacob down the ladder. And when he's back on solid ground, he and Seth take off in my direction.

"Did you see, Mom? Did you see?" Jacob's excitement is palpable.

My kids are both tugging on my hands, but my eyes are fixed firmly on a smiling Edward walking toward us.

"What do you say, boys? Should your mom get a turn?" he asks, his brow raised as he peers over his sunglasses at me.

The traitors are all for it.

"Yeah, Mom!" Seth shouts, bouncing around me as he tugs a little harder on my hand. "You should take a turn. It's so cool up there."

"It is, huh?"

"Come on, Bella," Edward encourages. "I'll even help you climb up."

I don't miss the quick waggle of his eyebrows.

With my kids and my boyfriend against me, it seems I have no choice. "Okay," I say with an overly dramatic sigh, "I'm game."

I'm nervous climbing up the ladder. Not only are my kids watching me, but so are potentially thousands of other spectators. Logically, I know not everyone here today is looking at me, but I still don't like feeling like I'm on display.

"Watch your step," Edward says, his voice sending a shiver down my spine, despite the rising heat of the early afternoon. As I climb up and over the side of the plane, he places his hands low on my hips to help guide me, but the only thing it does is make me stumble a little.

"Sorry," he murmurs.

I laugh as I look over my shoulder. "No, you're not."

His smirk gives him away. "You're right. I'm not."

His hands are steady, and I really wish we could get a minute alone. But before I can formulate a plan to steal a kiss, I'm settled down into the seat, surrounded by more buttons, knobs, and screens than I can count. There must be hundreds of instruments wrapped around me. Even as small as I am compared to Edward, I feel a little claustrophobic in the tight space, surrounded by the instrument panel and controls. I can't imagine how Edward folds himself into the small space and actually pilots this giant machine.

"Whoa," I breathe, apparently just as impressed as my kids were.

"Pretty cool, right?"

"That's an understatement." I look up at him. "Show me?"

He spends a few minutes pointing out what this gauge and that are and what they do. When he warns me not to touch the HUD, the heads-up display, I bring my hands to my chest.

He chuckles. "You're okay. You don't have to sit there with your hands balled up."

I relax my fists but tuck my hands between my knees, glancing at the transparent panel that's front and center in the cockpit and hovering over its own cluster of knobs and dials. "What does it do? The HUD?"

"Well, it displays all the important aircraft data and combat information to me while I fly. It keeps me from looking down at the instruments while I'm flying so I'm able to stay situationally aware of everything around me."

As he describes it in terms I can understand, it sinks in just how incredible it all is … how incredible he is. This wonderful man, so patient and careful with me, controls a fifteen-ton, multi-million-dollar aircraft at unimaginable speeds and acts like it's not a big deal.

"This is amazing, Edward." I look up at him as he hovers over me. "Really. Like, I understood you're a pilot, but it never really sunk in that this is what you do. Thank you for showing me. For showing my kids."

"I'm glad I got to share it with you and the boys. They're pretty amazing, too, by the way. Some of the questions they were asking …" He shakes his head, and a soft smile plays on his lips. "They're incredibly bright boys. You have every reason to be proud of them, Bella. Thank you for letting me meet them."

"Thank you for wanting to meet them."

He glances over his shoulder and back to me. "So, do you think I scored a few points with them?"

I giggle as I reach for his flight suit and give it a playful tug. "I'm guessing you've already achieved rockstar status. I'd say you scored more than a few."

"I've got someone coming back soon to relieve me. Do you think …"

"What?"

"When the captain gets back, I won't be needed for anything for a while, so how do you feel about me tagging along with you guys for the rest of the day?"

"I'd really like that. And the boys would probably like that, too."

The smile lighting his face brings one to my own. "Remember when I said I was going to have trouble not kissing you today?"

I giggle. "Yeah. Why?"

"Because I'm feeling it right about now." He holds out his hand for me. "So, before I let that happen, let's get you back on the ground."

It's awkward, and I'm worried I'm going to fall headlong off the ladder, but with Edward's hands gently guiding me, I manage to make it to the pavement without embarrassing myself.

"Wasn't that awesome, Mom?" Seth bounces around me, his eyes bright and excitement oozing out of him.

"So awesome. What do we say to Edward for showing us his plane?"

The boys turn to him and reply with a resounding, "Thanks, Edward!"

"You're welcome. What's next on your list of things to see? Are you going to check out the other exhibits? There are some other pretty cool planes to see. Even a few cars down at the other end."

Seth tugs on my hand and looks up at me. "When do the planes fly? I want to see that."

Edward checks his watch and answers for me. "The demonstrations start in about forty-five minutes." He looks to the boys. "If it's okay with your mom, once the captain gets back to take my spot, we can head over to the VIP area, and you can get a front-row seat for the show. We've got some snacks and drinks over there, too."

"Can we, Mom?" Jake asks, happiness still shining in his eyes.

"Yeah, of course, we can." I smile up at Edward. "Whenever you're ready, we're all yours."

The corner of his mouth turns up in a half grin. I'd give anything to know what he's thinking.

The boys spend the next several minutes walking around the jet, completely in awe of the plane Edward flies. I'm close enough to hear their chatter, the way they talk about knowing a "real-life" pilot. I find it funny that they seem to have forgotten Jasper, a man they've known for the last year, was a fighter pilot, too.

The large crowd makes me nervous, so I'm never more than a few feet away from the boys as they explore. But I'm not the only one watching over them, it seems. Every time he crosses my line of sight, Edward is there, keeping an eye on us.

Another ten minutes pass before I feel his presence behind me. "I'm free if you want to head over."

I smile over my shoulder. "Yeah." I call the boys. "Guys, Edward is ready to go."

They scamper over, eager to see more.

Turning to Edward, I smile. "Lead the way."

"Right this way, ma'am."

Before Edward can take a full stride toward the stands in the distance, Seth rushes toward him and reaches for his hand. I can see Edward's surprise, and it squeezes something inside my chest to see them together like that. But it isn't until Jacob follows suit, grabbing Edward's other hand that my steps falter.

I never in a million years thought my kids would both take to him so quickly. Sure, I'd hoped they would be friendly, that we could avoid them feeling toward Edward the animosity Jake seems to feel for Kate, but this is more than that. They seem drawn to him. But then again, it's hard not to be. After all, he's been pulling me farther into his orbit for weeks, and I've been practically helpless to fight it.

The grin Edward shoots me over his shoulder is brighter than the sun shining overhead, and the last of the anxiety I've been carrying around for weeks lifts from my shoulders.

Jacob and Seth are little chatterboxes as we walk along the path, hitting Edward with question after question. He takes it all in stride, though, graciously and patiently answering each and every one of them with a smile on his face.

But it's not nearly as big as the one on mine.

The 56th Operations Group tent behind the stands is bustling with people. Men and women in uniform and pilots in their flight suits are everywhere, along with dozens upon dozens of plain-clothes civilians lucky enough to be granted access with their VIP passes. With the music being pumped through the speakers outside, all down the flight line, and the tables of food and drink in the tent, it feels like a party. I spot Jasper and Alice on the far side of the tent and wave.

"How about we get you guys set up outside with some drinks and a place to sit before the show starts?" Edward asks, tilting his head toward the seating area past the other side of the tent.

The boys give their enthusiastic agreement.

"Can we save a few spots for Alice and Jasper?" I ask.

"If they haven't claimed some already, yeah, we can."

He finds us an empty row in the stands, and I spot Brandon seated just two rows away.

"These should be good," Edward says, directing my boys to sit. "How about you guys get comfortable, and I'll go find us some drinks and something to eat?"

Jake and Seth talk over each other telling Edward what they want, and he takes it all in with an amused smile on his face.

"I'll see what I can do," he says as he takes a step toward the stairs leading to the tent.

Before he can walk away, I reach for his hand and squeeze it. "Thank you."

He glances at the kids, but their attention is fixed on Brandon deciding to join us. Edward brings my hand to his lips for a quick peck. "My pleasure, beautiful."

I'm pretty sure my heart will be melted a hundred times over before this day is over if he keeps this up.

I don't miss the looks he gets from some of the other servicemen and women and a handful of wives as he walks down the bleacher steps. I also don't miss a few raised eyebrows and smiles aimed at me.

Instead of dwelling on what it means, I settle in beside my kids.

"No, I want to sit next to Edward," Seth insists.

I glance at Jacob as he crosses his arms and juts out his chin, and I know I need to nip whatever this is in the bud before they have an all-out fight over where they're sitting.

"Hey, guys, cool it. You can both sit next to him." I scoot down the row until I'm at the end and point to the now-empty space in the row. "There's plenty of room. Brandon can sit on the other side of Jacob, and there will be plenty of space for his mom and dad."

"And Edward?" Seth asks.

"And Edward."

My youngest hops into the space next to mine and grins up at me. "I like him. He's nice."

"You think so?"

He nods so fast he looks like a bobble head.

Tugging on the bill of his ball cap, I giggle. "I think so, too."

I take the opportunity to spray a fresh layer of sunscreen on all of us, and by the time I've tucked the bottle back into my backpack, Edward has returned.

"Here you go, guys." He hands a rectangular paper tray to each of the boys. "I hope hot dogs and chips are okay."

"It's great," I say, taking the one he offers me. "Thanks."

"Sit next to me, Edward," Seth says.

A look of surprise flashes across his face as he sits. "Oh, okay."

"What are those for?" I ask, leaning over Seth and pointing at the plastic packets Edward is pulling from his pocket.

"Earplugs. Parts of this show can get pretty loud." He hands a pair to each of my boys and one to me. "Sorry, Brandon. I didn't think to grab a pair for you."

"It's okay," the youngest Whitlock says. "Mom has some for me."

"Can you help me put them in?" Seth asks.

Before I can get caught up in more of my feelings over seeing him interact with my kids, I'm saved by Alice and Jasper returning.

"Oh, I should have brought extras for your boys, Bella," Alice says. "I'm so sorry. It completely slipped my mind."

"I've got it, Ali." Edward makes a final adjustment on Seth's. "There you go, bud."

Seth grins a toothy grin as he stares up at Edward. "Thanks!" he yells, obviously unable to hear himself very well.

Edward merely chuckles and helps Jacob put his in.

The boys are focused on the runway, so when I lock eyes with Edward over their heads, I mouth, "Thank you."

He lowers his sunglasses just enough that I can see his wink.

But my attention is quickly drawn to the action on the runway. An announcer's voice comes out of giant speakers, and the music changes. All up and down the flight line, I notice people have lined up, some standing, some sitting in chairs they've brought along. And right beside me, my kids are practically vibrating in their seats. The atmosphere is crackling with excitement as the first act is announced and takes to the sky.

The aerial demonstrations are nothing short of awe-inspiring. The first act is a parachute jumper flying a giant American flag as they glide back down to Earth. We see everything from old fashioned biplanes to wing walkers and everything in between. There's even a fifteen-minute reenactment of the battle of Pearl Harbor. It's emotional and dramatic and breathtaking, and as I glance over at Edward, I can't help but wonder what he's thinking as he watches it.

The highlight of the show for me and the boys is, undoubtedly, the Thunderbirds.

Six planes flying in formation so closely they could reach out of their cockpits and high-five each other. It's a breathtaking spectacle. The dedication and skilled precision those pilots must have boggles my mind. Watching them even leaves my kids speechless.

When it's all over and all the planes are back on the ground, Edward stands and tilts his head toward the stairs. "Come on. If we hurry, we can watch them park … if you want to see it, that is. Then we can head over to the reception to meet everyone."

Instantly on their feet, my boys tug on my hands.

"Can we? Please, Mom?"

"Yeah, please?"

I look up at Edward, searching for any clue that he's only being polite. But the smile on his face tells me everything I need to know.

He's actually enjoying this. He wants to spend more time with my kids.

"Yeah. Just let me tell Alice what we're doing, okay?"

When I let her know what the plan is, she informs me they'll more than likely be heading to the reception, too. "Jasper wants to say hello to a few people first, so we'll probably see you over there." She looks past my shoulder then back to me and lowers her voice. "Looks like things are going pretty well."

I turn to see Edward crouched down to talk to the boys and can't stop the grin on my face from widening. "Yeah, they are."

Alice surprises me by wrapping me up in a quick hug and whispering in my ear, a smile in her voice. "I told you so."

The hangar where the reception is held is huge and teeming with people. There's so much going on, Jacob and Seth can't decide where to look first. Edward, though, guides us around the large space and introduces us to so many people, I'm certain I'll never remember them all. But when I spot a few familiar faces in the crowd, I feel a little less out of my element.

"Bella, how are you?" Charlotte asks, coming in for a hug.

I'm caught a little off guard at the familiarity of her greeting, but I go with it. "I'm good."

A grin tugs at the corner of Angela's mouth as her eyes flash to Edward and back to me. "I had a feeling we might see you here today."

"Oh?"

"Oh, yeah. A little birdie told me our Lieutenant Colonel has been walking on cloud nine for the last few weeks."

"All right, ladies. That's enough," Edward says, shooting Angela a mock scowl. "You know gossip doesn't lead to anything good."

Angela giggles. "Oh, I don't know about that." She turns to me, and her gaze drifts to the distracted boys behind me. "So, are these your kids, Bella?"

While Angela and Charlotte gush over the boys, my kids look like deer caught in headlights.

"You should come to the little get together we're having for Ben's birthday in a couple of weeks, Bella," Angela suggests.

"Are you sure? I mean, with the kids …"

"I'm absolutely sure. We have a pool, so the kids could swim. It'll be totally laid-back. We'd love to have you."

"Yes, you should come," Charlotte adds. "Ang knows how to throw a good party. There will be several people from the squadron there. You could get to know a few more people." She grins and glances at Edward then back to me. "Especially since I have a feeling you'll be spending a lot more time with this merry bands of misfits."

Eventually, they're called away, and Jacob and Seth let me know they're thirsty again.

"Why don't you guys head over and grab something to drink?" Edward suggests, pointing to a refreshment table set up along the wall.

Jacob looks up at me. "Can we, Mom?"

"Yeah, just stay together, please."

I watch as they walk across the large space, but since there aren't nearly as many people here as there were on the flight line, my anxiety isn't anywhere near what it was earlier today.

"They're fine," Edward murmurs in my ear, taking my hand.

I turn to face him, smiling. "I know."

"Are you having a good time?"

"I am."

He opens his mouth to say more, but before he can speak, someone calls out for him.

"There he is! You're not an easy man to find," one of the Thunderbird pilots calls out as he approaches. "How the hell are ya, Vamp?"

They both reach for the other's hand to shake. "Hey, Bones. Good to see you, man. And I'm good." He looks over at me. "Really good."

The other pilot looks my way and raises a brow. "Who do we have here?"

"Bella, this is Bones. We go way back. Bones, this is Bella"—he grins so wide the corners of his eyes crinkle—"my girlfriend."

It's my turn to reach out for a handshake. "Nice to meet you."

"Well, I'll be a son of a bitch," Bones says, laughing. "It's nice to meet you, too." He looks between Edward and me. "Were those your kids I saw before I walked over here?"

"They're mine," I'm quick to answer.

Bones' gaze lands on Edward, and a smirk spreads across his face. "Never thought I'd see the day when you finally decided to settle down and be a family man. Who knew? The Vamp Cullen I knew back in the day wasn't exactly—"

"The Vamp you remember hadn't met Bella yet," Edward says, his tone resolute.

Their conversation leaves me feeling a little uneasy, but it's all pushed aside with Bones' next words.

Bones jerks his thumb at Edward. "Back when this guy was number three, he earned his Thunderbird squadron quite the reputation for knowing how to party."

"Wait." I close my eyes briefly and shake my head. "His Thunderbird squadron?" I look at Edward. "Your squadron?"

Both his eyebrows shoot up as he widens his eyes. "Surprise."

"Shut up. You were a Thunderbird? Seriously?"

He nods sheepishly. "It was a handful of years ago, but yeah."

"Wow, that's … wow. Why didn't you tell me?"

He glances over my shoulder, I presume to look for the boys, before reaching for my hand again. Gently tugging me toward him, he leans in just a little. "I couldn't tell you all my secrets at once, now, could I?"

"I guess not, but …"

His grin only grows, looking more amused than anything. "You know, if you want a copy of my résumé, all you have to do is ask."

Giggling, I shake my head. "I don't think that's necessary." I school my features long enough to narrow my eyes. "Unless there any other big surprises?"

"No, I'm pretty sure that's it."

Before I can decide if I'm going to press the issue, the boys rush back over. When they spot who we're talking to, they're a little starstruck.

"Bones, I'd like you to meet Bella's boys, my new friends, Jacob and Seth."

My children are once again speechless when Edward introduces them to Bones and, when we're guided to where they all are, the rest of the Thunderbird pilots. Jake and Seth get their picture taken with them and a few autographs, and the whole time, smiles are plastered across their faces.

When the Whitlocks finally make their way to us, the boys are distracted by Brandon. Jasper and Alice say hello, and conversation turns to the few places all these men and women have crossed paths in their service.

"You and Vamp should come out with us tonight, Tex," Bones says.

Jasper shakes his head. "I would, but we promised the kids we'd take them out for pizza after this."

Bones turns to Edward. "What about you? I know your bird-dogging days are over, but you used to be one hell of a wingman. We could use you tonight. We can't let a good opportunity pass by to see what kind of trouble we can get into here." Bones elbows Edward and chuckles. "You remember how it is; what goes TDY stays TDY."

For some reason the tinge of embarrassment that colors Edward's cheeks makes that uneasy feeling return. "Thanks for the invitation, but I'm going to pass. Those days are definitely over for me."

"Aw, come on. We won't be out late." He playfully pokes a finger at Edward's side. "I promise to make sure you're home before your bedtime."

"You should go," I say softly. "I don't want you to miss out on—"

He wraps an arm around my waist for just a moment, and that brief, simple touch sends a tingle down my spine. But it's his softly spoken reply that gives me a feeling of reassurance I didn't realize I needed.

"I'm not missing out on anything." He turns back to Bones. "I've got a few things to wrap up here before tomorrow's show anyway. Besides," he says, glancing my way, "I'm kind of hoping to crash this pizza party Tex is talking about."

When the boys hear Edward wants to come with us for pizza, they can barely contain their enthusiasm. It's tempered just a little when Edward tells us he'll have to meet us there.

"I wasn't kidding when I said I had a few things to wrap up here," he says. "Give me … an hour?"

With a promise to meet, we go our separate ways. I linger just a step behind the others simply to blow Edward a kiss.

What I'm not expecting is for him to blow one back to me.

The drive to the pizza place is filled with animated chatter as the boys talk about what they saw today, and I sit back and soak it all in. It's been so long since they've been this excited, this happy about anything, and it feels like a breath of fresh air.

The lively conversation follows us into the restaurant.

"Make sure we have a seat for Edward," Seth reminds me as we scoot into a corner booth.

"We will."

"When will he be here?"

"Soon. Let's go ahead and order, and hopefully, he'll show up when the food is ready."

And I'm right. By the time the adults have finished their salads and the kids have found the bottom of their baskets of chicken wings, the pizzas are placed on the table … just in time for Edward to slip into the booth beside me.

"Hey. Sorry that took so long."

Before I can reply, Seth leans all the way over me, practically sitting in my lap to get closer to Edward. "It's okay, Edward. The pizza just got here." My son flashes me a smile and gives me the puppy dog eyes. "Can we switch so I can sit next to him?"

"Maybe next time, Mr. Saucy Fingers." I point to Seth's honey-barbecue-sauced hands. "He doesn't want to wear your dinner."

"It's fine, Bella," Edward murmurs in my ear. "I don't mind."

"See, Mom? He said it's okay. Switch me, please?"

I turn to Edward. "Are you sure?"

"What can it hurt?"

"Fine. You guys win." Realizing I'm not going to win this fight, I scoot over just enough for Seth to wiggle in between Edward and me before we all dig into the pizzas.

Seth monopolizes Edward's attention, practically sitting in my boyfriend's lap as he goes on and on about the skateboard he wants for his birthday and the video games he's playing right now. Jacob, meanwhile, looks a little left out. Even though he's talking to Brandon, his eyes keep drifting to his brother and Edward on the opposite side of the table.

But I don't have to worry.

"Jacob, your mom told me you play soccer."

Jake nods.

"Do you like it?"

"Yeah. I have a game in the morning, too." Jake looks over at me. "Can Edward come to my soccer game tomorrow, Mom?"

It's the very last thing I expect him to ask, so I'm caught a little off guard. "Oh, well, I don't know. That's a question for Edward, not me."

Jake turns back to Edward. "Can you?"

"Yeah, can you?" Seth asks, tugging on Edward's sleeve.

He wipes at his mouth as he chuckles. "You two really want me to come?"

"Yes," they reply in stereo.

"Well, I'd love to see you play, but depending on the time, I'm not sure if I can make it. I have to report pretty early tomorrow for the last day of the air show."

"Oh." Jacob's shoulders slump as he falls back in his seat.

"But if I can't come watch you play tomorrow, how about we make plans for me to catch a game another day?"

The smile I saw earlier on Jacob's face comes back. "Yeah. Okay."

"Did you guys have fun?"

Both boys pull their covers up over them as I pick up the dirty clothes that litter their bedroom floor.

"Yeah."

"Yes."

"Good. I'm glad." I lean over and kiss Seth on the forehead. "Try to get some sleep. We have an early day tomorrow with your brother's game."

"Okay, Mommy." Seth yawns and curls onto his side.

"And you, mister. Did you have fun?" I ask Jacob as I pull his covers up a little higher around him.

"Yeah."

I sit on the edge of his bed and brush the hair from his eyes. "You really seemed to like meeting Edward."

"He's nice."

"He is."

"Do you think he'll come to my game?"

"He told me before he left the pizza place that he'd text me in the morning if he could come. But I don't want you to be disappointed if he can't."

He shakes his head. "I won't be. But …"

"But what?"

"Even if he can't come, can we do something with him another time?"

Jacob's request fills me with hope that the road ahead with Edward might be a little easier to navigate than I initially thought it would. Seeing the three of them get along so well was more than I'd dared to wish for, and now it feels like that elusive happiness I've been dreaming of is finally within reach.

I smile and lean over, kissing Jacob's forehead. "I think he'd like that."

A/N: I think that went about as well as it could have, don't you? I don't know about you, but I think Seth is too cute for words. And it looks like Edward may have even cracked Jacob's shell. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this chapter.

***POSTING SCHEDULE UPDATE***

I apologize for the delay in posting. I had emergency surgery almost two weeks ago, and recovery has been two steps forward, one step back. And it's because of this I'll be moving to an every-two-weeks posting schedule for the time being. I was behind before I went into the hospital, and I'm even more behind now. As I've said before, I'd rather space out the updates to try and keep to a regular posting schedule than leave you hanging when I would inevitably run out of chapters. With any luck I'll bounce back quickly and we can go back to weekly updates. Thanks so much for understanding!
