Chapter Sixty-Nine: All in the Golden Afternoon.

The mermaid sighed.

She was hiding in the rocks, hoping that she was safe for even a moment. Her skin was tinged with green sparkles at various spots, revealing her strange beauty in the night. Her hair was laced with seaweed and her eyes tired. She hadn't rested for several days, too afraid to stop. Her green eyes stared out at the open sea, fearing that the hunters were going to come find her fairly soon.

Laughter broke her train of thought.

Looking behind her, she saw nothing out of the ordinary. However, she could hear the laughter quite clearly. Frowning, she gave one more worried glance as she dove into the sea water once more.

"-And then that fearsome croc forever went tick tock, tick tock!" roared one of the sailors as the others joined in with laughter. The pirate grinned, his backwards hands flailing in the air. However, a hook rounded his neck and that made him stop.

"That is quite enough of that," Captain Hook said dangerously, "Your voices are carrying."

"C'mon Captain," one pirate complained, "We were just having a little bit a fun."

"Fun is not why we are here," Captain Hook said, coldly, "If we are discovered-!"

"We're miles away from that little town, Captain," another pirate protested, "No one is going to hear-!"

"What is all this ruckus?"

All the Pirates froze, looking around to see Cora coming out of the Captains quarters. They bowed deeply, Captain Hook being the only one still standing. He released the pirate from his slender hook as he flourished it.

"Majesty. I was just reminding my crew that our mission requires a level of discretion," Captain Hook said, "Now if they could just get back to their duties, we can prepare to move the ship to a new location!"

The pirates were too afraid to move as Cora said, "Well? What are you waiting for? I believe you're Captain gave you an order."

They all scrambled and Captain Hook scoffed. Walking towards Cora, he said, "I apologize if they woke you, Queen of Hearts."

"I've been awake," Cora said, sighing, "Alison is being… plagued by nightmares."

"I thought Death was allowing you to reunite with the wee one," Hook said disinterested.

"The Siren said it," Cora said, "But I can't take her word for it. They have always had plans for my little princess since they day she fell down that rabbit hole."

"When will we move forward with our plans for her?"

"Patience!" Cora said, impatiently, "We need to stick to the plan. If we rush, our plan will fail and I can think of several Mages that will be more than happy to chop off our heads."

"Oi!"

Captain Hook and Cora's attention when to the Backward-Handed pirate. He was holding a broom as he shouted towards the edge.

"Mermaid!"

The mermaid panicked, realizing she had been seen hiding on the side of the ship. Cora's eyes met with hers and the mermaid was immediately terrified. Diving into the water, she swam deep into the abyss in hopes to escape. Alison… she knew that name. She knew that child. The woman's eyes burned into her mind, making her forget about her own troubles for just a moment.

For someone else was being preyed on by a terrible, evil witch.

"Are you sure you're ready for this?"

Emma was packing up books into a box. They were in Emma's apartment, where there were boxes all around. Piper was watching her, sitting on the sofa lazily. She smiled knowingly at him and said, "I am ready. Henry is ready. Are you sure you're ready for this?"

"Hey, I've been ready," Piper said, "In fact, I'm the one that asked. I just know that this is big, especially for us."

"And I am more than ready to move in with you," Emma said, closing up the box she was working on. She got up and leaned over Piper. She kissed him sweetly as she said, "Now get your lazy butt back up and start packing."

"So, how are you parents taking the news?" Piper asked, "I'm surprised they are not taking command of the whole affair."

"That's because they kind of don't know yet," Emma said, making a guilty looking face.

"Oh come on Emma," Piper said, "You told Regina, you told Alison, but you didn't tell your parents?"

"Well, I tried!" Emma protested as Piper stood up. He gave her a shrewd look. "Really. It's not my fault every time I try to tell them some evil villain is running after my kid's best friend or some poor woman has lost their baby's father. This whole thing happened kinda fast."

"Well, I would suggest telling them soon," Piper said, wrapping his arms around her waist, "Otherwise they are going to come over here and see that their daughter has disappeared."

"Who has disappeared?"

Emma froze as Piper let go of Emma. They both looked over towards the door to see David and Snow standing in the doorway. Both of them looked shocked as David said, "Wait, what is all this? Why is everything in boxes?"

"Are you moving?" Snow said upset.

"Well yeah," Emma said uncomfortably, "I tried to tell you. But we kept getting interrupted by babies coming into the world or kids getting attacked by evil villains."

"Well-Well where are you going?" Snow asked, twiddling her bag strap nervously, "I mean, I know this apartment is a bit far from us but it is nice."

"Umm." Emma looked at Piper nervously who only shrugged. "Henry and I are moving into a house… Piper's house to be more precise."

You could have heard a pin drop. David crossed his arms, a disapproving look coming across his face. Snow did not look any more thrilled as she shifted uncomfortably. Emma frowned as she said, "Look I know it's sudden, but you could be a little more happy."

"Well… I mean we," Snow looked a David, "We aren't Emma. I mean, we didn't even talk about this."

"You didn't even ask us!" David interjected, glaring at Piper.

"Hang on!" Emma said, her voice getting heated, "What do you mean, didn't ask you?"

"Emma, we are you parents!" Snow said, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, "These are things we need to discuss before you go jumping into decisions."

"Well, now that I know how you feel about it, I'm sort of glad I didn't," Emma said hotly, "I can't believe either of you! This a decision between Piper, Henry, and I-!"

David's phone rang, making him give one last look before disappearing out into the hallway. Snow looked at Emma once more before saying, "I have to get to school. We'll talk more about this later Emma. Alone, if you don't mind Piper."

Piper shrugged as Snow left, shutting the door behind her. Emma glared at them, her look darkening as she did so. Piper gently wrapped his arms around her as he said, "Emma, are you-!?"

"No," Emma seethed, "I'm not alright. Let's just keep packing."

"Alice…"

The fog was so thick that Alison could feel the moisture seeping into her skin. It was a warm wet, however it wasn't one that she liked. Rubbing her shoulders, she looked around as she searched for the voice she had heard. It was a man's voice, calm and clear. Despite this, she could not for the life of her figure out where it was coming from.

"Hello?" Alison shouted, "Who's there?!"

Not one voice but many voices spoke. All of them were in whispers, all whispering Alice. Alison made a face as she said, "I'm not that person. Who are you!?"

The whispers rose in number and the air around her grew tighter. Some of the words changed to compendium and time, echoing against the name Alice. Alison trembled a bit, her caution raised. Alison noticed a shadow flickering in the fog. Her heart leaping, she took a step towards the figure.

It was like stepping on a mine.

Alison screamed as red clouds burst around her, the light white turning to the darkest wine. The moisture was blown from her, prickling her eyes dangerously. Laughter replaced whispers and the calm voice was changed to a mocking tone.

"Not yet, my little lamb! Not yet for you! You heart can't breathe until you finally sing true!"

Alison gasped, waking up sweating and shaking.

The sun was peeping through the window of the room she was staying in. It was not her bedroom, but it had been one she had stayed in before. The walls were white and the bed warm. Too warm, even for the winter weather that was approaching. Kicking off the covers, Alison swung her legs out of bed, trying to calm her shaky nerves. It wasn't working. A shower is what she needed. Alison looked up and saw that her uniform was already waiting for her on a hanger. Her hostess was good that way, taking care of small little things. Standing up, she grabbed the hangers and made her way to the bathroom.

"So she's been doing better?"

Regina was stirring up some eggs in the skillet. She had the phone piece in her ear, listening to Emma. Sighing, Regina said, "As better as she can get considering the circumstance. I believe Midas said that Kathryn is better but he is afraid that the two of us are going to set her off."

"Sounds like he's being overprotective," Emma said grouchily, "And controlling. Does he forget that Alison's connection to Kathryn is more than just her being a Nanny?"

"He's just trying to do what's best for everyone. He doesn't want Alison's heart to be constantly broken by Kathryn's screams."

"True… but still."

"Our best plan is to just continue on with life," Regina said, "She needs something to look forward to. Something to help keep her mind of things."

"We can do more magic lessons?"

"Her magic is explosive right now. We need just a little more time for her to mellow down," Regina said, "Besides, magic is not the solution here. She needs something fun, something non-magical."

"Well, she's got that concert this Friday," Emma said, "Maybe focus on that?"

"That's only a temporary fix," Regina said, before hearing creaking from above, "She's out of the shower, I'll call you back."

"M'Kay. Want me to pick her up later? Maybe the kid and her could use some ice cream? I know I could certainly use some after Mom and Dad Dearest attack meeting."

"I warned you that you should have talked to them sooner," Regina said, "Besides that's a no go. She hates sweets remember?"

"Damn it! Who hates ice cream!?"

"Me," Regina said shortly before hanging up. Sighing, she pulled the ear piece out and continued cooking breakfast. Alison came into the room, her hair still wet from her shower. In her hand was a notebook and pen. Hopping up onto the stool, Alison said, "Who were you talking to?"

"Emma," Regina said, turning off the stove and pouring the eggs and sausage onto a plate, "She wanted to know if you wanted go out to ice cream."

"I hate ice cream." Alison said, flipping through her notebook. Alison stared down at the potion diagrams she had been drawing for the past two weeks. Sketching a circle on a fresh page, Alison began jotting notes.

"That's what I told her," Regina said, "However, you really should do something fun. Keeping yourself cooped up in my house and at school is not fun."

Regina slid the plate over to her and Alison looked up at Regina with a deadpanned look.

"I see everyone at school," Alison said, picking up her fork, "Why does it matter if I see them outside of school?"

"Because you're obsessing over this potion," Regina said, moving around to the other side, "It's not healthy."

"But we need to figure out a way to get us back to the Enchanted Forest before some evil villain decides to kill the whole town by making it disappear faster," Alison protested, "We already have a Phantom of the Opera-Nut running around, I don't want to wait to figure out what's coming next."

"And we will find him, stop him, and deal with anything else that comes our way," Regina said, "For now, let us worry about it. You, eat your breakfast and…"

Regina closed the notebook and snatch it away. The phone began to ring, making Regina glance over her shoulder a moment. Alison looked at her indignantly as Regina said, "No more. Have fun, spend time with your friends. I want to see giggles and smiles on your face before you come back."

"Do you see my face?" Alison asked, pointing at her face as Regina left the room, "Does it look like I have more than one mouth? I can't smile multiple smiles with one mouth!"

"Don't be a smart mouth and finish your breakfast!"

Alison pouted before turning back to breakfast as she muttered, "Gold would have thought it was funny…"

Red slammed the book down on the counter, flipping through it at lightning speed.

August winced as he watched Red look through the book. The diner was in full swing, the morning crowd sitting in their usual places. August sipped his coffee as Red grumbled, "Robert has tomorrow off, I'll have to make sure George knows to come in and open."

"Why don't you take a breather?" August said, "You've done all the morning prep, take a load off."

"I can't," Red said tightly, "I have to finish inventory before it gets too late and I need to make sure payrolls go through smoothly."

"It will still be there in five minutes," August sighed, "Come on, everyone needs a break."

"Clearly!" Red said, closing the book with a snap, "Everyone needs a break! Everyone needs time! The workers, the doctors, Alison-!"

August winced as Red hiccuped. Her eyes went glassy as she stared at August with a stony expression. Sighing, August reached out his hand and took her own.

"I just-!" Red said, her voice half broken, "I want her to be able to come to me. Why is that so wrong?"

"It's not," August said, "But we can't dictate the people that she feels connected with."

Red watched him with an unsure face as he continued, "Look, I went nuts when I found out Lizzie was still alive. I had every instinct to take her from Gold, from Kathryn, even away from this town. But I realized something with spending time with her."

August shook his head slightly as he said, "She's not the same Lizzie I knew. She wasn't as open; she was a bit more jaded then I had left her. But she was smarter, more cunning, and extremely strong willed. She had changed, which means who she connected with had changed. It didn't mean she loved me or Baelfire any less, it just meant that she had grown."

Red smiled weakly as August squeezed her hand. He smiled back and said, "Just give her time. She'll be back bugging you soon enough."

"Story of my life," Red said, "I just wish she would do it sooner than later."

"Enough!"

Alison sighed, staring over at Avenant as he twirled the baton in hand. Everyone was quiet, watching him nervously. However, he didn't seem displeased as he stared at the score in front of him. His brows furrowed in thought as everyone watched him.

"Alright," Avenant said, putting the baton down abruptly, "We are done for the day. Good work. I will see you here for dress rehearsal tomorrow."

Alison sighed in relief as she put her music away. Fife always seemed to finish before her for he suddenly popped up next to her.

"Hey!" Fife said, cheerfully, "How have you been?"

"Fine," Alison said, "Just glad that rehearsal went smoothly."

"I know right," Fife said, "I was afraid he was going to have us run through it all again."

"I was tempted."

Alison and Fife froze a moment before looking up. There stood Avenant casually, staring at the two of them.

"However, I felt that my pianist back was not going to get any straighter and my oboist sound wasn't going to get any clearer," Avenant said, "So I realized there was no sense beating a dead horse… or two in this case."

"If my back gets any straighter, it's going to bend in the wrong direction," huffed Alison, putting her folder into her bag, "It's as straight as it's getting."

Fife rolled his eyes as Avenant leaned over and said near her face, "I beg to differ."

Alison's face flushed up before she could even register she had. Fidgeting in her seat, she ducked her head to look in her backpack. Tapping her back briefly, Avenant moved around them and disappeared into the back stage saying, "Don't be long, Fife. I need you back stage."

"M'kay!" Fife called back. He looked back at Alison and grinned. Alison looked up and smiled back. Shaking out her hair, Alison said, "So… what are you doing today?"

"Avenant needs my help organizing the final arrangements for the concert," Fife said, "Why?"

"Just curious," Alison said, "Regina told me to go have fun… whatever that means."

"Oh," Fife said, as Alison stood up. Giving him a reassuring look, Alison said, "Hey, I'll see you later."

"Yeah," Fife said, watching her leave. Alison hurried out of the auditorium, rubbing her cheeks. They still felt warm and she couldn't understand why. Walking down the front steps, she heard familiar barking. Smiling, she saw Pongo pouncing towards her. Archie let go of the leash, allowing Pongo to run towards her unhindered. Alison giggled as Pongo jumped to lick her face. Grabbing his leash, Alison rubbed the top of his head saying, "Hello, boy. Ready for a beach walk?"

"Yes, yes he is," Archie said, adjusting his glasses, "I'm sorry, He gets all riled up with you."

"It's alright," Alison said, "How are you?"

"I'm alright," Archie said as they began to walk away, "Pongo had a v-e-t visit this morning and he wasn't so pleased about it."

"Aww," Alison said, reaching down to scratch his ears. Pongo jumped to lick her, obviously pleased with the attention. They went on in silence for a little while, reaching the dock. Archie finally broke the silence as he said, "So, are you still living at Regina's?"

"Yeah," Alison said, any amusement that was on her face vanishing, "I am."

"I see," Archie said, "Do you mind if I ask you why?"

"Because she doesn't scrutinize me," Alison said, "Like I'm some broken china doll that needs her pieces put back together."

Alison pulled Pongo's leash closer, her face becoming a little more worried. Staring off into the sea, Alison said, "She'll also have no problem blasting Phantom, The Deck of Cards, or any other evil nut job that's out to get me."

"I see," Archie said, "You don't think Emma won't do the same?"

"She's still learning how to use it," Alison said, "Besides the Charmings are having their own family squabble right now. I want to stay far away from it."

"Squabble?'

"Yeah, Emma is moving in with Piper," Alison said, "The Charmings aren't happy about it, even though it's obvious that the two of them were going to get back together eventually."

"I see," Archie said, as they walked along the beach calmly, "What do you think about it?"

"I think that Emma is almost thirty years old and too old to be parented," Alison said.

"She is their daughter," Archie reasoned.

"Yeah, but though blood only," Alison said, "I mean ultimately Emma's the only one who has the right to choose that if she wants it. They can't speak for her."

"All very fair points," Archie said, "And what about you?"

"What about me?" Alison asked.

"How are you labeled in your newly found family?" Archie said, "I mean, technically they are your grandparents. But if family is more than just blood, how do you fit in? Daughter, Granddaughter, what do you feel like your place is?"

Alison was quiet a moment, pondering. A little frown formed on her face as she looked at him.

"Why are you always asking me deep psychological questions I don't have the answers to?" Alison asked.

"Because it's who I am," Archie said with a smile, "Part of my nature."

"Well your nature should come with an answer booklet."

Archie and Alison stared at each other before laughing. The moment came to an end with the lease tensing. Pongo suddenly froze, staring off into the distance. Alison stopped, turning to see him standing at alert.

"Pong-!" Alison screeched at he suddenly took off. "PONGO!"

Both Archie and Alison raced after the barking dog. The cold air bit them as they did so but they didn't care. All they cared about was that the dog did not jump the huddled figure on the rocks.

"Pongo, heel!" Archie cried as Pongo jumped towards the figure. He managed to grab the leash in a knick of time while Alison climbed carefully towards the person. The person huddled underneath the torn sail that they were desperately holding onto. Alison's concern was evident as she said, "Hey, it's okay. Pongo won't hurt you, he's just being over energetic."

The trembling stopped, but the person did not reveal their face. Alison reached out slowly and grasped the sail. Pulling it back a bit, Alison stared in shock.

There was a young woman, sea weed hanging off her shoulders in woven knots. Her damp hair was the most vivid red that Alison had ever seen. Ghostly green eyes stared into Alison's blue ones.

"Oh," Alison said, as the woman shifted uncomfortably. However, upon examining Alison further, she scrambled up while pulling the sail around her. Alison jumped back a bit, rocking on the unstable rock. She didn't fall but stared at the woman who was staring at her with a sudden relief. Reaching out, she opened her mouth to speak… but faltered. Surprise momentarily entered her eyes before frustration took over.

"Can you… not speak?" Archie asked, the woman's eyes looking from him to Alison frantically. Alison examined her with confusion before realization hit her. She was wearing a bracelet with shells of a teal and blue embedded into the metal.

"You're a mermaid," Alison said in awe.

"She's a what?" Archie said baffled as Alison smiled warmly, "But she has legs…"

"I know," Alison said, "Don't worry about the how, let's just get her back into town."

Alison extended her hands as she said, soothingly, "Come with me. We'll help you, don't worry."

The woman stared at her hands for a moment before taking them. Her balance was not sure as they stumbled down the rocks. Archie held onto Pongo as the dog eagerly smelled the air. The woman fell onto Alison, who into turn helped her stand straight.

"Don't worry. You'll get used to it," Alison said, "I promise we won't have to go far."

However, with one glance at the sea, the woman couldn't help be worried. There was a Witch Queen on the boat and a witch in the sea that were coming for her. How could she warn this poor girl of the looming threat if she couldn't speak?

The eels hissed, lurking in the water eerily. The cave glowed with the light coming from the water. On a large rock, sat the Sea Witch. Her tentacles swirled around in the water slowly. Humming softly, Ursula opened her eyes slowly. Rolling her eyes, Ursula said, "You know, you shouldn't linger in doorways. It's rude."

Out of the shadows came Cora, her eyes glittering dangerously. Ursula seemed unfazed by her demeanor, sitting up in her stone throne. Smirking, Ursula said, "Now, what does the Queen of Hearts want from this Sea Witch? Hors d'oeuvres? Because if you are, I recommend guppies."

"How about mermaid?" Cora asked.

Ursula narrowed her eyes. The eels hissed, the water splashing dangerously. Cora glanced down a moment before looking back. Ursula stared long and hard before saying, "So you've seen my little mermaid. She stole a precious object from me. Luckily for me, I still have her voice locked up tight."

Ursula fiddled with a spiral shell around her neck. Cora glanced momentarily at it before saying, "I heard you have your hunters out after her?"

"What's it to you?"

"She is with someone I do not want harmed," Cora said, "However, this mermaid knows information that I do not want her passing on to this person. I want this mermaid dead."

"Well if that's the case," Ursula said, "I wouldn't worry too much. My minions will have her dragged back to the sea before long."

Cora frowned as Ursula reached down into the water. The eels swam around faster and faster as Ursula said, "As for your… friend. I can't make any promises. I suggest if you want someone unharmed, you get them away from my prey fast."

Cora glared at Ursula as the Sea Witch continued, "Don't get all 'off with your head' with me about it either. I know people that wish harm on your dear little friend. Which would be a shame if it came to pass because I heard your friend sings so beautifully."

Cora's face turned ugly but said nothing more. Disappearing in a cloud of smoke, Cora left Ursula alone. Ursula chucked as she looked down into the water. Swirling the water around, Ursula whispered, "Well, it seems we have a change in plans, my babies. Go, find that Dragon and tell her that I need to speak with her immediately. Someone has her eye on the girl."

"A mermaid!?"

Nick's voice sounded excited as Alison flipped the pages of the book. It was propped up on the circulation desk so Alison could flip through it easily. Ava shushed him, swatting his arm with an annoyed expression. Nick looked offended as Ava leaned over Alison's shoulder asking, "How does she have two legs?"

"She has a bracelet made from a shell from a magical fish," Alison said, stopping on a page with a sketch of mermaids. Ava looked at them intrigued as Nick looked around the corner. Touching the sketch of a screeching mer-creature, Ava asked, "That's what mermaids look like?"

"But she doesn't look like that," Nick said, watching the now properly clothed woman walk around.

"This is what they look like when they are hunting," Alison said, turning the page, "This is what they look like when they are passive."

"Like how this world portrays them," Ava said, "Gotcha."

"I wonder how she ended up here?" Nick wondered.

"I don't know," Alison said, skimming the ruins on the side of the page, "It says here that they are the only creatures that can cross dimensions, even though it doesn't say how."

"What language is this anyway?" Nick asked, "It just looks like scribbles."

"What? Oh," Alison said, distracted, "It's Wonderlandish."

"And you can read that?" Nick asked amazed. Ava looked at him oddly as Archie came into the library with a heavy jacket.

"I left Pongo at home. I figured it was best he wasn't jumping her constantly," Archie said, fiddling with his umbrella, "Have you found any clues yet on her lack of voice?"

"Not yet, but I only just found my stash of books," Alison said, flipping the pages. The woman came around to the front of the library, her skirt swaying about her ankles. She smiled warmly at everyone when Archie smiled back, his cheeks reddening a bit. Alison smirked a bit, as did the twins. Archie handed her the coat saying, "Here. This should keep you a bit warmer."

He helped put the coat around her shoulder and she blushed a bit. However, there was tinge of nervousness to her stare that could not be missed. The children exchanged glances.

"Hey, Archie. Why don't you take her to look at books for a bit? It's going to take me some time to go through these," Alison said, a bit loudly.

"Oh, alright," Archie said, snapping out of his mini trance. Offering his arm, he let her link hers before taking her to the shelves in the back of the library. Nick watched them and said, "I think I'll go in the back with them. Just to keep watch."

"Kay," Ava said, "Don't get sidetracked by stuff though."

Nick left them alone to flip through the book. Ava glance around before whispering, "You do realize what this means though? I mean she is a mermaid. She could get us the mermaid scale we need."

"You do realize that she doesn't have scales right now?" Alison asked, "Besides, I've heard it's like pulling a tooth from your head. It's not exactly the nicest feeling in the world."

"Ow," Ava said, wrinkling her noise, "How do you even know that?"

"A pirate told me," Alison grumbled, "Or at least, he showed me. It was not a pleasant experience."

"Yikes," Ava said, "I didn't think-."

"It would be that painful?" Alison suggested, "Yeah, it is."

Turning a page, Alison stopped at the sight of a drawing. Tapping the picture, Alison said, "There it is. Mermaids normally can only access use of legs at one period in high tide. However, this bracelet made by the goddess…"

Alison's face fell as Ava groaned.

"Ursula," Ava said defeated, "By the Sea Goddess Ursula."

"Great," Alison said, "She stole something from the Sea version of the Evil Queen. Lovely."

"Sounds like the story of the Little Mermaid to me," Ava said, "So we find her prince, she gets true loves kiss to restore her voice, and we throw this bracelet back into the sea so evil squid doesn't come looking for trouble."

"I doubt it's going to be that easy," Alison said, "Her mermaid form is not a curse. Her mermaid form is who she is. Even if her voice is cursed, her being a mermaid won't change unless she can keep the bracelet. Besides, the story of the little mermaid in the book didn't end well. The prince chose someone else. "

"Well that's great," Ava said, "Maybe Gold has something in his shop that might help her? Since you know, you can't use your magic to help her."

"Maybe," Alison said before there was a stumbling noise. Alison and Ava turned towards the noise as Nick came back around the corner.

"She's fascinated by the books," Nick said, "She's like in seventh heaven."

"I bet she would be," Alison said.

"Excuse me?"

Alison looked up to see the library door open. In came the last person that Alison expected to see today.

"Professor Avenant," Alison said surprised.

Avenant glanced around, books in arm as he said, "I came to drop off some books I had borrowed a few months ago. Mrs. Gold was nice enough to loan them to me for an extended period of time. I was going to just insert them into the slot, but I saw the lights on. Has she returned?"

"No," Alison said, her voice disappointed, "No, they are still gone."

"Ahh, I see," Avenant said.

"I can take the books if you like," Alison said suddenly, "Check them back in for you."

"It would be very much appreciated," Avenant said handing her the books. Ava shifted, folding her arms as Alison turned on the computer. Nick ducked himself away, obviously nervous. Avenant glanced around as he said, "It's a shame that she didn't hire someone else to run the library. Many people in the community miss it."

"Yeah," Alison said, "I'm surprised she didn't too."

Avenant glanced around the corner as he saw Archie and their new guest. Raising his brows, Avenant said, "A friend of yours?"

"Hm? Oh yeah, she's a fast friend," Alison said quickly. Checking in the books, Alison said, "Did you want to take out any more books?"

"Not today, thank you," Avenant said, "I have business back at the school. Try not to become too distracted, Miss Kinsleigh. I need you in top shape for our concert."

"Me, distracted?" Alison teased, "Now where would you get an idea like that?"

Avenant rolled his eyes as he walked out of the library with a wave. Ava pursed her lips as she said, "I know you like him and all, but he really is an unpleasant dude."

"He has his moments," Alison said putting the books aside.

"Speaking of having moments," Ava said, "Have you talked to Chess recently?"

Alison winced, grimacing. Ava raised her brows as she said, "I know your still not talking to Jack. But c'mon. Chess was just trying to comfort you."

"I know," Alison said, gritting her teeth, "I'm just… its complicated."

Ava smirked as Alison glanced back at her. Scowling, Alison said, "Don't turn that into anything more than it is."

"I don't know what you mean," Ava said, simply, "Come on, let's go check out your gramps shop. Nick! Stay with Cricket and the Mermaid!"

"Wh-Where are you two going?" Nick asked worried.

"Gold's shop," Alison said, "I want to see if there are any clues he has hidden there."

"Oh-ok," Nick said, "Should I call Henry and Grace?"

"I already did," Alison said, putting her coat back on, "Neither of them picked up so I left a message on Grace's phone."

Ava and Alison left the library. The cold windy air blew against her cheeks as she said. Alison looked around to see owners putting up lights in their shop windows. Alison made a face as Ava said, "Christmas is coming soon… It's hard to believe with all the mysterious stuff going on."

"I know." Alison said, "It's really weird without Granny. I wonder if Red has put up the decorations yet."

Ava wringed her hands for warmth when she said, "About that… I think Red's actually been pretty torn up."

"Well yeah, her Grandmother was murdered," Alison said, frowning.

"But that's not the only thing," Ava said, "She's really upset…that you know, stayed with Regina? Instead of her?"

"Why would I stay with her? So Phantom can kill her too?" Alison said, "Regina at least has magic to save herself."

"Is that really why you are staying with her?"

Alison didn't response and Ava decided it was not best to push the matter. Alison and Ava crossed the street, hurrying towards Gold's shop. Taking keys out of her pocket, Alison went to unlock the door. Ava glanced around as they walked inside the very empty shop. Ava looked around and said, "Okay! So what are we looking for?"

"Anything that will have a trident or sea looking symbol on it," Alison said, "You check out here, I'll check the back."

"M'kay."

Alison wandered into the back, glancing around Gold's office. Her face fell as she stared out into space, remembering when this office was lit and used. They had been gone for much longer than she had thought. She knew she was being selfish to want them back when they had training to complete. But she had sent desperate messages to the manor after what happened with Granny and Kathryn. There had been no response and Alison was uneasy.

It felt like things that could be coincidences just weren't.

"Ava, have you found anything yet?" Alison called out. There was no response. Alison frowned, turning around to stare towards the curtain. There were no footsteps and no rustling of any noise from the front. Walking towards the curtain, Alison was about to look out when she heard a rustling of noise behind her. Whipping her head around, Alison found herself staring at a most peculiar sight. A pitch-black rose sat on Gold's work desk. It had most certainly not been there before. Walking over to it, Alison picked it up as she felt a chill over her shoulder. It was almost a whisper, a whisper she could barely understand. A note was attached to the rose. Alison pulled the note off and read its contents:

"The first of many gifts I leave for you. -Phantom."

Her temper flared.

The rose disintegrated in her hands, Alison flinging the ashes. The note crumpled in her other hand, rage filling Alison to the very core of her being. Looking wildly around the back of the shop, Alison called out frantically, "Ava?!"

There was a rustling, one that made Alison jump out into the main room. What she saw there made her freeze. Ava was standing there.

Restrained.

By a male who face was covered partially by a mask and a cloak.

"Well Miss Kinsleigh," he hummed, his voice sending unwanted shivers down her spine, "Aren't you a vision."

"A vision that is about to rip you to shreds," Alison growled, "Let her go."

"Relax, Miss Kinsleigh," he said, holding the knife closer to Ava's throat, "I have no interest in hurting her. However, if you 'rip me to shreds' I can't promise she won't get caught in the cross fire."

"No interest," Alison snarled, "Tell that the Kathryn and Granny!"

Alison swung her hands out, vines shooting up from the floor and grabbing his wrists. His hand holding the knife was forced away from Ava's throat, giving the girl the opportunity to escape from him. Alison grabbed Ava's hand, yanking her to the back room. They raced towards the door, opening it to escape. But just as Ava left the shop, Alison found herself yanked back. The door slammed shut and the lock twisted. Alison was thrown to the ground and her arms pinned above her head. There he was above her, pinning her body to the floor. Alison gasped painfully as she felt her magic rearing in on herself. It was suffocating, making her insides burn like no other.

He was repressing her magic, forcing it back in.

"Now, now," he hummed, "That wasn't a kind thing to do… especially to a friend who gave you such a lovely gift."

"You're- not a friend," Alison forced out, glaring at him. His chuckle sent shivers down her spine once again.

"Perhaps you don't see me that way yet," he said smoothly, "But you will soon see… in the meantime, you'll need to hurry back. Your new friend has a secret she needs to tell you. If she hasn't already been dragged away to her doom."

Alison gasped as he gripped her wrists tightly.

It was too much. Her magic exploded, sending him reeling back before disappearing all together. The lock clicked and the door flew open as Ava raced back in.

"Alison," she half sobbed, "What did he-?"

"Not now," Alison gasped throatily again, allowing Ava to help her get up, "We need to get back to the library NOW."

It was too late. Alison and Ava entered the library, only to find it in disarray. No Nick, no mermaid, no Archie in sight. Ava went in search, staring around the room wildly. Alison walked through the chaos more slowly, staring at the clues. All of which led her to the elevator.

Which was slowly coming back up…

On its own.

"Great," Alison said, "Absolutely great."

"What?" Ava stood by her, also looking at the elevator. As if on cue, the elevator doors opened as if inviting them in. On the walls of the elevator was a written message.

"Come alone. Or we'll drown your lovely friends."

"Well," Ava said, sarcastically, "That doesn't look like a trap."

"Even if it is," Alison said, "We have to go."

"Shouldn't we go get Emma?" Ava asked.

"We don't have time and it says to come alone." Alison said, shaking her head. Pulling out her phone, Alison texted Emma and Regina. "We need to get to them before Ursula can drown them all. She's just going to have to catch up."

Ava swallowed, nodding as she said, "Do you have anything to fight with?"

Alison gave her friend her famous are-you-kidding-me stare. Lifting up her leg, Alison pulled a sheathed knife from her boot. Ava grinned and said, "I should really know better. The Mage of Wonderland is never without a weapon."

"I've learned my lesson about being unarmed a long time ago," Alison huffed, holding out her hand, "Now let's go."

"Into the belly of the beast," Ava sighed lightly.

"Emma we need to talk about this!"

Emma made a face as she put clothes into the suitcase. The apartment around her was slowly becoming bare as she continued to back. Snow and David were standing in the doorway of the bedroom, frowning deeply. Emma shook her head as she said, "There is nothing to talk about."

"Nothing to talk about- your moving into a house with Piper without consulting us! There is something to talk about."

"Nope, you've already said your piece," Emma said, shortly, "And last I checked, the only ones that needed to be a part of the conversation is Henry and Piper."

"We are your parents!" David said, exasperated.

"Alright, you want to pull that card," Emma said, her eyes flashing in anger, "Let's pull that card. You're my parents. My parents that in order to have a small chance at saving a whole Kingdom sent me through a portal and GAVE ME UP."

"Emma-!" Snow said, her eyes turning glassy.

"I know you were trying to do what's best," Emma said, stiffly, "Your kingdom was your priority. But I am a grown woman. You do not get to come swooping in trying to turn back time to be my parents. That time is gone, whether we like it or not! I have a son and someone I love deeply. They are my priority! You don't get to pick and choose what I do with my life."

Snow had tears falling down her face as David looked miserable. Emma put the last bit of clothes in her suitcase as she zipped it up saying, "The only one that's earned the right to tell me what to do is me."

"Emma, we just want to get to know you," Snow begged, "To catch up for all the milestones we missed. You're right that we don't have the right to tell you what to do anymore, but you keep closing us off to everything else! I just want to have a relationship with you."

"Then first things first," Emma said, "Both of you need to cut it out whatever you have against Piper."

"I don't have anything against Piper," Snow protested.

"That makes one of us," David huffed.

"David," Snow said, sending him a cross look.

"He is my significant other," Emma said, "And even if he wasn't, he is the father of my son. He deserves after all he's been through to have a second chance at his family. If you are going to keep holding things that were beyond his control over his head, this relationship between us ends now."

"Alright," Snow said quickly, elbowing David. He winced but nodded in agreement. "But in the future, I would like to at least now things sooner than moving day or wedding day if that is in your plans-!"

"One step at a time," Emma said, smiling, "But deal."

There was a swirl of clouds as Regina appeared looking harassed.

"Regina!" Snow said surprised, "What are you-?"

"Emma, have you looked at your messages at all?!" Regina said, harassed.

"Wha-No!" Emma grabbed her phone and looked to see 5 new messages. Three from Regina, one call from Regina, and one from…

"Come to the library, 911," Emma groaned, "Oh kid, what did you do?"

"Not good things, now let's go," Regina said, "We need to save her so I can ground her butt until July!"

Regina waved her hand and Emma and her disappeared. Snow and David blinked as Snow said, "You know, Regina is getting mighty protective of Alison, if I do say so myself."

"I know," David said, "I'm not so sure that's a good thing. What happens when Gold comes back? Those two don't get along well."

"Well, I think he's just going to have to get over it," Snow said, "After all, Regina is the only one who has enough power right now to keep Alison safe."

"Only because Alison is too busy getting herself into trouble," David teased, "Come on, why don't we help Emma finish packing up this stuff. I have a feeling they are going to be a while."

"Have you found anything yet?"

Henry looked up from the pile of books that he had been searching through. Grace and him had been searching the books in the Author's Study. Despite searching through all of the books, Henry couldn't find anything on this 'Phantom'.

"Nothing," he said dejected, "You?"

"Not a thing," Grace said, unhappily, "How are we going to find out how to defeat him if we don't even what he is?!"

"We'll keep looking," Henry said, "There has to be something here. Her Dad was the author for the Enchanted Realm for years."

"But what if he's not an enemy that her Dad encountered?" Grace said worried.

"Then maybe we can get hints to how his powers work," Henry said, "He can't be the only one that has this type of power."

Grace nodded, as Henry turned back to his reading. Grace seemed lost in thought, looking as if she had a lot on her mind. Getting up, Grace walked about the study. Looking at the floating book, Grace crossed her arms. Henry looked over her as he asked, "What's wrong?"

"This," Grace said, "This book. Dad says its just one portion of the Compendium of Wonderland. It makes me wonder if my mother has one too."

"I would imagine she would," Henry said, "But Alison said that it's locked away, hidden in the heart of the Fortress. Why are you thinking about this now?"

"I don't know," Grace said, shaking her head, "I guess… my mom could see it. Everything that was going to happen in her future was at her fingertips and it benefited her. It just makes me wonder… If we are making a mistake not looking at Alison's."

"No," Henry said, getting up to walk over to here, "It's different than your moms. The future is not completely set in Alison's. We could make the future worse."

"Or we could be making it better!" Grace said, whirling around, "What if the secret of this phantom is in this book, Henry? We could have a way to defeat him!"

"But we don't know that!" Henry said frustrated, "We can't just start taking it out when things get too hard. The more we use it, the more vulnerable it gets. We have to protect it."

Henry took Grace's hands as he said, "We will figure this out. We just need to keep at it."

"This is creepy."

Alison and Ava walked along the edge of the cavern, weapons at the ready. Alison was quiet as she followed the noise of water. She could hear it vaguely. Ava twisted the handle of the knife in her hand as she asked, "Where is it coming from?"

"I think from this way," Alison said, quietly. She pointed towards a tunnel, leading into darkness. Ava made a face as she said, "Once again, walking right into a trap."

"I know that," Alison scowled, "But she has Archie, Nick, and the mermaid and I shouldn't have to tell you how evil Ursula is."

"Now, now…"

Alison and Ava froze at the entrance as they heard the voice. It drifted from down the passage, sending shivers down their spines. Alison swallowed nervously as the voice spoke again.

"No need to be rude. Come down, we will discuss my terms before anyone else arrives."

The voice was taunting them. Alison made a face as Ava whispered, "I've got a really bad feeling about this."

Alison led her down the passage anyway. God, she hoped Emma and Regina got her message. The darkness over came them quickly, leaving them alone in the dark. Alison and Ava stayed very close to one another as they made their way.

"Really bad feeling about this," Ava whispered again.

Alison was about to comment when she felt the ground give out from under her. The girls screamed as they fell, the darkness rushing around them. Soon light struck their eyes as the cold water soon engulfed them. Alison almost choked, thrashing around in the water. Fear shot through her like wild fire. She was NOT a good swimmer by any means. She managed to grab onto the rocks and pulled her up onto the edge. Ava gasped, swimming over as Alison reached out towards her.

"Are you okay?" Alison asked, grabbing her friends hand.

"I think so," Ava groaned as Alison pulled her up onto the edge. There was a clearing of the voice as the girls looked across the pool of water.

There she sat, her tentacles twisting and splashing the water. Archie, Nick, and the mermaid were restrained by blue electric magic in the corner. Alison stood up and yelped as an eel flapped it's tail viciously at her from the water.

"Now, now, my pets," purred Ursula, her dark eyes glittering coldly, "We don't want to hurt our guests."

"Guests?" Ava spat, "You call threatening us to come alone and you call us guests."

"Would you prefer the term prisoner?" Ursula said smoothly, "Because I can make you one."

"Regardless," Alison interrupted, before Ava could continue, "You clearly want something from us. Why else tell us to come get our friends instead of just killing them."

"Ohhh right to the point," Ursula said, smirking, "I like a girl that knows what she wants. Very well. I will give you back the boy and the cricket if you give me something that I need."

"And what is that?" Alison said, her eyes flickering back and forth from her friends to Ursula.

"I want a rose in exchange for each of your two friends," purred Ursula, her eyes glittering, "Your wonderland roses to be precise."

"What do you want with those?" Ava asked, only for the eels to splash up at her again.

"Quite the rude one you are," Ursula tutted, "I have a special substance that I need to acquire. Wonderland roses are the only ones that can hold it."

"What about the mermaid," Alison demanded, "I'm not leaving without her."

"She stole from me," Ursula said, flicking one of her tails menacingly, "I don't take well to thieves."

"Well then we have no deal," Alison said, menacingly. Alison opened her hand trying to summon magic to her hand. But nothing came.

"No magic for you it seems," Ursula taunted, "You've depleted your power reservoir."

Alison took a deep shaky confused breath as Ursula said, "Say goodbye to your friends."

Ava screamed as one of the eels snarled, launching out of the pool. Alison threw out her hands reflexively, wanting a magic shield more than anything.

But something else came that she did not expect.

Bolts of electricity erupted out of her hands, shocking the eel and sending it back into the pool. A blue energy came in front of her and Ava, protecting them both. Alison's jaw dropped a bit as Ava found herself pressed against the wall.

"Ho-How are you doing that?" Ava asked, wide eyed.

"She doesn't know."

Alison yelped as the shield was disintegrated and the electricity was snuffled. Ursula, who had extended her hand, smirked coyly as she said, "Well, this is a first for me. I've never seen an elemental user that has that kind of ability to draw on raw Anti-Magic. No wonder Gold didn't want you to use your magic. He didn't want to risk you expulsing your magic enough to tap into that. He'd never be able to tame you."

Alison tried to get it back but couldn't. Ursula laughed as she said, "It won't come back to you yet. You haven't mastered it. But I must say I thought my friend was crazy when she said you would be powerful. I was quite wrong."

"Your friend?" Alison questioned.

"I have a proposition for you," Ursula said, "As well as giving you your friends back, I will let you have the mermaid and the bracelet. I'll even rip up her previous contract."

"What do you want in return?" Alison asked shrewdly.

"I want not only the two roses," Ursula said, "But for you to have a meeting with my friend. A parley of sorts. She's been looking for a girl like you for a very long time."

"And what if I say no," Alison said.

"Then I will drown your four friends and drag you to her myself," Ursula said menacingly, "And I'm sure your grandfather could tell you that I don't bluff."

Alison swallowed as the tentacles went around Nick's, Archie's, and the mermaid's neck. Ava tensed, fear entering her face as Ursula asked, "Do we have a deal or not?"

Alison closed her eyes a moment as she said, resigned, "Deal."

"Good girl. Give the flowers to my friend at the meeting. Since your magic is currently out of use," Ursula said, her tentacles sliding away from her friends. The magic disappeared as well as Ursula began to retreat into the shadows.

"My friend will be in touch. Tell your Grandfather I say hello."

Ursula disappeared, leaving Alison staring after her. Ava dashed over to her brother, throwing her arms around him. Archie helped the mermaid to her feet as he asked, "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," she said, staring at Alison with wide eyes. Her hand immediately went to her throat, massaging it. Archie looked surprised as he said, "You can speak."

"Yes," she said, "The witch took my voice as payment for legs. I guess she wasn't kidding about ripping up my contract."

Archie gave her arm a comforting squeeze as he looked over at Alison. She was still staring into the shadows, looking concerned. Archie went over to her as he said, "Are you alright?"

"Alright is a pipe dream Archie," Alison said, looking at him worried.

"Umm, not to sound ungrateful or anything," Nick said, "But how do we get out?"

"Kid!"

Alison looked up, seeing the large hole she had fallen down. There was a light flashing at the top as Alison yelled, "Emma!? Is that you?!"

"Yes! Are you okay!" Emma bellowed.

"We're fine," Archie shouted, as the other three came over to them, "But Alison can't use her magic to get us up!"

"Don't worry, Regina is coming! We'll get you out."

Archie looked back at the mermaid, who looked sick. Archie dashed forward as the mermaid fell. Ava and Nick looked stricken as Archie gently lowered himself and her down to the ground.

"Is she okay?" Nick asked worried.

"I think so," Archie said, feeling her pulse, "I think the stress just gotten to her."

"I feel her pain," Nick moaned, rubbing the bruises on his neck. Ava patting her brother's shoulder sympathetically before looking over at Alison. Alison was now staring at her hands with a worried look. Ava found that was never a good thing. First the Phantom, now this mysterious ally.

Why were they all coming after her friend?

"You know this is not what I meant by spending time with friends."

Alison was sitting on a table in the library, cross legged. Regina was tracing the lines on her hands, her fingertips glowing. Emma had taken Ava and Nick home while Archie sat by the unconscious mermaid on the couch. Alison shrugged a bit as she said, "I tried to. Fife was busy, Henry and Grace are MIA, and on my walk with Archie I came across a hunted mermaid."

"Which made you jump head first into a cavern to fight a Sea Witch," Regina said with a scowl, "and ended up making a deal with her."

"In my defense, I did text you," Alison said, "And she threatened me to come alone."

"While that is true," Regina said, tapping Alison's hand several times, "I would appreciate you tell Emma and I that you found a wanted mermaid before she gets captured."

"I'll keep that in mind," Alison said, "Any idea what caused my sudden magic loss?"

"Yes," Regina said, "It looks like your body expelled it, which allowed the Anti-Magic part of your core to come to the surface. Did you use quite a bit of magic?"

"Kind of," Alison said with a grimace, "I was attacked…"

"By who, the Sea Witches hunters?" Regina asked, dismissively.

"No," Alison said, wincing at the memory, "By him. Phantom."

Regina froze, her face going from dismissive to stricken. She let go of Alison's hands to cross her arms. She looked at Alison with narrowed eyes as Emma came back into the library with Piper.

"You ran across the Phantom?" Regina asked, her voice almost a growl, "When?"

Emma's eyes went wide as Piper froze in his steps. They were all looking at Alison, who was clearly not comfortable. Alison swallowed and said, "Right before this. I was looking at Gold's shop for something that could give us a clue on how to help her. He attacked us there. He pinned me, repressed my magic until it exploded."

"Well that explains what caused the magic loss," Regina scowled, "Why didn't you call for me then!?"

"Because he had just got done taunting me that we had better get a move on if we wanted to save the mermaid. He said she had a secret to tell me." Alison said, "I was a little more worried about what was happening to everyone I left here!"

"Okay, everyone calm down!" Emma said, stepping forward, "I think she did the best she could considering the circumstances."

"I know that!" Regina said, "But that still doesn't change the fact that she's promised a meeting with this mysterious person. What if it's the phantom?"

"I don't think it is," Alison said, rubbing her wrists, "Ursula kept saying she."

"Of course," Regina muttered, turning away from them for a minute. Emma and Alison watched her nervously but said nothing. Piper was not so quiet.

"Well regardless, I don't think you should meet this person alone," Piper said, stepping forward towards them, "It may be an ally of his. Did she say you had to go alone?"

"No," Alison said.

"Then we'll go with you," Piper said, "Problem solved."

"Not quite."

They all looked towards the couch to see the mermaid to see the mermaid was awake. She was looking at them desperately, clearly upset by something. Standing up with the help of Archie, she looked towards the group.

"I'm afraid there is another threat waiting for you," the mermaid said, "One that I came across while hiding from the Sea Witch."

"Who are you?" Regina asked, "And what threat are you talking about?"

"My name is Ariel Sørensen." Ariel said, "And the threat I am talking about is for you Alison."

"What threat?" Alison asked, frowning.

"The Queen of Hearts," Ariel said, "She is here."

"We've been exposed!"

Cora winced as Captain Hook slammed his hook down on the table. The rage on his face was clear, his face almost beet red. Cora sighed, shuffling the cards in her hands. This seemed to anger Hook as he snapped viciously.

"How can you sit there playing cards, knowing that our plan has fallen to pieces!"

"It has not fallen to pieces, Captain," Cora said pointedly, "We have just face a big step back, no thanks to the octopus. We will still recuperate."

"How?" Captain Hook snarled, "The whole Hero clan now knows we are here! It is only a matter of time until we are all hunted down like dogs."

"Patience!" Cora said, her voice sharp, "You need to learn patience, Captain. We will still get what we want. Now, please go have your men get ready to move the ship to a new location. Make sure that they understand that we need discretion."

Captain Hook glowered at her but stormed out of the cabin. Cora sighed, the irritation now showing on her face. Standing up, she walked over to the mirror. Tracing the mirror, Cora saw Alison brushing her hair at the vanity. Her eyes softened as she said, "I think it is time for you to come back to me, Pet."

"Alison?"

Alison was sitting at the piano in the band room. She was dressed in a white button up shirt and black pants. Red stood in the doorway, dressed in a rather nice black dress. Alison smiled at her weakly as she said, "Hey. You made it."

"I wouldn't miss it," Red said, smiling. Alison got up from the piano as she walked over to Red.

"Thanks for letting Ariel stay at the inn," Alison said.

"It's not a problem. It's nice to have someone else around the same age." Red said, brushing off Alison's shoulders. Her smile faded a bit as she tucked a loose strand of Alison's hair behind her ear.

"I should have done your hair," teased Red, "You can never smooth back some of these fly aways."

"Bah," Alison said, rolling her eyes, "They don't stay put. It's no use."

Red pouted a bit before her expression turned bitter. Alison's did too as Red said, sadly, "Why won't you go back home? Why Regina of all people?"

"Because it's not safe," Alison said, "You're not safe with me."

"I will protect you," Red said, her voice raising, "I don't care-!"

"I care!" Alison's voice boomed over hers, silencing her, "I care whether or not you get hurt! Regina has magic, enough to keep herself safe from him!"

Red's eyes shone with tears as Alison said with glassy eyes, "I'm not putting you and August in anymore danger than your in. Please."

Red sighed, pulling Alison in for a hug. Alison hugged her back as Red said, "Why must you be so stubborn?"

"Because it's how we are," Alison said, "Let's be real, Granny was the only one that could out stubborn us both."

"This is very true," Red said, rubbing Alison's back. Pulling away, Red said, "I'm going to go find my seat. Good luck."

"Thanks," Alison said as Red walked away. Alison sighed as she went back to the piano to grab the music. Tucking it away in the folder, Alison heard a familiar voice.

"I noticed that the library has a new clerk."

Alison looked back to see Fife standing there, dressed quite nicely. Smiling at him, Alison said, "Yeah, she's still being trained, but she really likes it."

"Avenant is really happy about it," Fife said, grinning, "It's been nice not to have to hear him complain about it."

"I'm sure he'll find something to complain about soon," Alison said, cheekily.

"Like how my pianist can't keep her back straight?"

Alison rolled her eyes as Avenant appeared in the doorway. Fife looked at him sheepishly as Alison said, "Surely you don't mean me, because my back is as straight as a back can be."

"If you call that straight," Avenant scolded. He held out a small poinsettia hair piece to her saying, "Here. Call it a Christmas gift if you will."

"Awww," Alison said, grinning, "A Christmas miracle. You do have a heart."

"I will see you on stage in ten minutes," Avenant said, "Come Fife, I need your help setting up some final things."

Fife smiled at her before disappearing with him. Alison shook her head playfully before trying to put the poinsettia in her hair.

"Need help with that love?"

Alison's smiled turned into a grin as she turned to see Chesshire. His grin was ever apparent, but he seemed a little off. Holding it out, she said, "Yes please."

He took it and lace it into her hair. Alison watched him, noticing his eyes were a little red and was sniffling a bit. Alison pouted reaching up to feel his face. He was chilled.

"You poor kitty," Alison said, "You got a cold."

"Running out in the freezing air does that to you," Chesshire said, his voice a bit dismissive.

"I'm sorry," Alison said, sadly.

"Don't worry yourself about that love," Chess said, "But I am worried that you didn't call for me earlier. How else am I going to protect you!?"

"I'm sorry, I didn't even think of it," Alison said. Chess narrowed his eyes, stepping closer to her. Alison barely had time to react as he trapped her against the wall. Breathing in deep, Alison watched him in surprise as he said, seriously, "Don't ever forget. You could have died. BOTH times. And you would have left my heart completely obliterated."

"Chess," Alison said, her blue eyes wide. Chess clenched his jaw a minute before kissing her forehead. When he pulled away, his grinning nature had returned in full.

"I love you, Kitten," he said, "Good luck on stage tonight."

He disappeared in a whirl of smoke, leaving Alison still pressed against the wall with her heart pounding.

"Professor."

Avenant was shuffling through some of the papers on his stand as Fife watched him nervously.

"What is it Fife?" he said, not looking up from his work.

"Are we going to be safe?" Fife asked nervously, "I mean, she's been exposed-!"

"We will be fine," Avenant said, dismissive, "I've ensured our safety. Do not speak of this again in public."

"Understood," Fife said, "I'll be with the other's if you need me."

Fife left quickly as Avenant glanced over at him. Scoffing, Avenant muttered, "I could care less if the Queen's plan fails, so long as I have what I need."

Alison walked in the woods, climbing up the hill. She was alone, which was good because she didn't want to be followed. Her face was nervous, as if she was doing something that others would not like. Making it to the top of the hill, she came to the top to find the wishing well. Standing by it, Alison bit her lip a minute. Finally she said frustrated, "You can come out now. I already know your still alive."

At first, there was nothing. Then after a few moments, Alison felt a breeze chill her. She was playing games and Alison didn't like it. Tapping her foot impatiently, she waited until she heard the snapping of a twig. Alice spun around and saw just who she was looking for.

"Hello, Alice," Cora said, sweetly, "I've missed you dearly."

Alison swallowed, her eyes going glassy as she said, "Hello your Majesty. Long time no see."

"Thus grew the tale of Wonderland: Thus slowly, one by one, Its quaint events were hammered out – And now the tale is done, And home we steer, a merry crew, Beneath the setting sun." Chess said, his voice as smooth as butter. He and Alice were lying in the field, the wind blowing the warm air against them. The sun was low in the sky, casting a golden glow on the world. Alice was wearing a yellow dress that fit her frame quite nicely. Time had clearly passed for her but her childish smile still remained. Their heads were close to one another as Alice reached over and touched his face.

"That was quite fun, Chesshire," Alice said, "You have the best sort of reciting voice."

"I'm glad you think so, love," Chess said, cheekily, "So what misgivings have you been up to at the Queen's palace. I haven't seen you much lately."

"She wanted to me to get the Baron to rescind his trade offer to the Duke, which I did," Alice said, "And then I had to acquire the Queen a spell that someone took from her, which I took back."

"She's turned you into quite the formidable foe," Chess said.

"I am her Majesty's servant," Alice said, rolling her eyes, "A Nobody. Even you know that Nobody's must serve without question."

"I would hardly call you a nobody," Chess said, turning so he was sitting up. "You're quite special to me."

"You're lucky she doesn't hear you talk like that," Alice chided, "You might lose your head."

"I hold the right to talk like that," Chess said, "Besides, if she didn't want us together, she wouldn't have extended your hand to my mother for me."

"True," Alice said, "But she might have just done it so she could get you Wonder Cats to stop causing trouble."

"Maybe."

"Chesshire," Alice asked, "What is your mother like?"

"My mother?" Chess said, "Why she is strong and willful and beautiful. Much like you."

"Chesshire!" Alice scolded, but her eyes danced with emotion. He shrugged as he said, "Must you return to the castle tonight? We could stay at the Hatters like old times."

"She didn't give me permission Chess," Alice said, dismissively, "But I will walk back that way. I want to make sure my friend isn't pricking too many fingers."

"Much too late for that," Chess grinned. Smoke swirled about him as he said in cat form, "Coming?"

"Always!" Alice grinned, getting to her feet.

The two walked through the fields and the forests to the Hatter's house. Chess teased her by flicking her skirts with his tail. Alice giggled madly as they came upon the Hatters house.

They both stopped short.

The tables and tea sets were trashed beyond belief. The door was off its hinges, and the windows smashed. Next to the door frame, there was a royal degree stabbed. Alice was shaking, her eyes wide as Chesshire looked stricken.

"Love," he started as Alice dashed to it. Grabbing the note, she read it out loud.

"The Queen of Hearts hearby decrees that the Hatter is guilty of highest treason. He will be tried at the court and executed at the Queen's Mercy by sunset of the Sleep Solstice. This is insanity! He wouldn't do that Chesshire! He'd never risk not seeing his daughter again! Someone has to be setting him up!"

"Alice-!" Chess said, fearful, "I'm afraid-!"

"No!" Alice spun, fire in her eyes, "I will clear his name. He is my Hatter and I only have one. I won't lose him."

TemperanceTales: OH MY GOD. That took years. Years of painful writers block and revamping of the entirety of ALISON. Needless to say, I've revised this story. So I really do suggest going back to read it. There were plot holes that I need to fill in and scenes I wanted to change and add. I do not own Once Upon a Time and give full credit to it's creators. I really hope you enjoyed this chapter!
