Odyssey out of Time.
A Darkening Galaxy.
In 2373, the chaos within the Alpha Quadrant had almost completely gotten out of control. The war with the Klingons was slowing down as Starfleet's newest hyperdrive capable ships were sent into Klingon space when Starfleet Command and the Federation Council, tired of the relentless attacks, sent ships straight into Klingon space, attacking the main shipyards and the supply depots deep in Klingon space.
After the original Borg invasion six years before where Starfleet and the Klingon Empire had sent several warships to help fight off the new dangerous enemy, only to prove useless as the Borg had the unwitting assistance of Captain Picard, whose extensive knowledge of Starfleet operations rendered all defence schemes useless while showing Starfleet's idea of defence was lacking, projects in defence and offence, as well as projection of power technology, had allowed Starfleet to slow the Klingons down.
And with the looming threat of the Dominion which brought with it insights and scans into their tactical technologies, including scans that revealed the best way to protect their ships from the Dominion's phased polaron beam weapons which were able to crash a ships' shields and cause significant damage to the starship before the Odyssey's arrival brought new technologies which allowed the Federation a chance to really turn the tide of battle.
The Battle of Sector 001 took place at a really bad time for the Federation, a battle between a lone Borg Cube and the Federation's last line of defence in the Terran Solar system. The arrival of the Borg Cube and its subsequent destruction when the tide was turned, not just with the help of the Enterprise E, but also with the new Asgard technologies that had been put into production by the Federation.
According to later reports and accounts, the Borg Cube endured a great deal of damage as the new Asgard weapons penetrated the Borg defences while using the Enterprise-D's original idea of using a means of retuning the weapons to a random setting after each discharge while Naquadah enhanced fusion bombs were fitted to photon and quantum torpedoes, ripping into the Borg Cube and were transported deep within the Cube, and exploding within moments of materialising.
In orbit above Earth, large defence satellites and stations fired Asgard Ion cannons at the Borg Cube, again, using the same retuning methods to stop the Borg from adapting so quickly.
Several ships were destroyed during the course of the battle; some of them were only armed with Asgard weapons and basic shields, but they were enough. The Borg tried to tractor them in for assimilation; the captains and crews, knowing the ships contained the technology capable of defeating the Borg, destroyed their ships before the Borg had the chance to assimilate them.
However, the biggest boons which heralded the destruction of the Cube were; Captain Picard's assumption of command and his eerie ability to hear the Borg Collective so he and the surviving ships were able to focus their attacks on a central spot before the Borg could stop them. But the second was even more devastating for the Borg.
Starfleet's access to the Asgard database had also given them insights and ideas about Ancient weapons. The Ancients, an ancestral human race, had highly advanced weapons in the form of their drone technology. While Starfleet was a long way from developing the kind of genetic control for such weapons especially as the Asgard themselves didn't use it, they did have the means of creating weapons that could act like drones. The holograms of the various Asgard in the knowledge bank had helped Starfleet Tacticians with the weapons. They were armed with naquadah enhanced fusion bombs attached to conventional quantum warheads - many in Starfleet believed it was overkill, but the hologram portraying Supreme Commander Thor's recorded personality pointed out quite clearly the Borg were capable of adapting themselves to various weapons and technology, so should they not destroy them quickly before giving them the chance?
Needless to say, there were many people within Starfleet who were not happy with the overkill, but they were in a minority. Many people had suffered and died because of the Borg; for a chance to destroy their ships in battle was something nobody in their right mind could ever refuse.
Unfortunately, a Borg scout ship managed to escape. It opened a temporal vortex which would have assimilated Earth in an alternate timeline, had the USS Enterprise not stopped them.
But the worst was to come.
Starfleet had barely managed to get back on its feet before the Dominion invasion and the surprising alliance with the Cardassians occurred. The logic behind the alliance was perfect. The Cardassians had been the victims of a changeling organised scheme to invade Cardassia and its holdings by the Klingon Empire. Millions of Cardassians were killed by the pointless invasion and many colonies had been conquered, the Cardassians oppressed by the Klingons. Gul Dukat's surprising turnabout changed the balance of power. The Klingons were forced out by the Dominions' superior weapons, and many Klingons were wiped out. Most chilling of all, was Gul Dukat's message to the Klingon High Council, as a threat and a promise for revenge.
"To the Klingon Empire; you have just been driven out of Cardassian space. But this is not the end, in fact,
it is far from being all over. For a long time relations between our race have been amicable despite the Betreka Nebula Incident. We should have conquered and exterminated your filthy kind from the galaxy for such an event. But we didn't. We were not strong enough. However, that has changed. I have asked the Dominion to provide us with some of their technology, including their bio-weapons. To avenge our dead, you will be exterminated before we burn your planets. Tell your people to begin digging mass graves. To the Klingon warriors who sang songs and told stories of how they murdered Cardassian citizens and laughed, I hope you choke on your bloodwine. We are coming. We are already preparing to massacre your filthy race.
"When we come, we will burn your cities, just like you did to us. The survivors…. You had better be prepared to learn how to wash, because you will be serving your Cardassian betters as slaves, and we don't want to smell your disgusting odour. The survivors of your kind will be placed under the whip we used on the Bajorans during the Occupation of Bajor.
"You will be enslaved. You will be used to be experimented on, after all…you are only Klingons, beneath Cardassians in every way. You are already ours and we have your race free to use. We are your superiors, in terms of culture and existence. We don't need some filthy barbarians to tell us we are dishonourable, and we don't care about what you think of us, because we think the Klingons should have been sterilised from the moment you came into sentience.
"You are not honourable; you attacked us because you believed we were under the Dominion's influence. Well, as the humans say, you reap what you sow. We could have been great allies, but we are on the winning side now and one day, you will be bowing to Cardassian statues each time you see them. Your children will only hear about Kahless in telling. However, they will know we see you as animals fit for slavery. They will know fools like that posturing buffoon Gowron led their former glory to an untimely and unlamented death. They will grow up in mines, or concentration labour camps while surrounded by the remnants of the Klingon Empire. Your so-called Hall of Heroes will be destroyed, cast down, forgotten. Those Imperial Overseers who executed millions of Cardassians will find themselves on the receiving end of true justice, where they will be tortured day and night before death is merciful.
"Personally I am looking forwards to having Gowron and the other animals who call themselves councillors serving Cardassian officers, looking at us with fear permanently burnt into their eyes, because we will teach you your place in the universe, and it's at the feet of the Cardassian people. The location of all of the Federation, especially the stupid admirals who allowed us into their territory, to DMZ. They too had better prepare for the day of their own enslavement. But for you…. The time of the Klingon Empire is at an end. This I vow with my life's blood. To all Klingons in the galaxy, prepare for a life of slavery."
The message was broadcast freely throughout the galaxy. What made it worse was with Dominion assistance and weapons, the Cardassians actually began making good on their threat when the war really heated up. Many Klingon colonies were bombed and invaded while the Cardassian soldiers gleefully tortured and murdered Klingon civilians, including children while forcing the survivors into work camps. Those who resisted were exposed to the experimental bioweapons. It was one of the most sickening weapons the Cardassians could ever invent, and the worst of it was they didn't need the Dominion's help.
Cardassians, like the Romulans, were unafraid of biological weapons. They didn't care about honour the same way the Klingons did. To them, bioweapons were a useful tool. With a good and sufficiently lethal and deadly weapon that was virtually incurable and effective to the targeted DNA, a virus could exterminate virtually all while the invaders just had to stroll in.
The weapons killed millions of Klingons before Crell Moset, the Cardassian doctor who gleefully tortured and experimented on Bajorans now relished the chance to work on the Klingons. Soon his laboratories where doctors like himself gladly had the chance of torturing and experiment on Klingons to see what they could take. Vorta doctors who were assigned as well to find weaknesses in Klingon biology were not as gleeful, but even they found satisfaction in seeing the arrogant Klingons brought down. Some of the Founders had ordered the Vorta to discover if the Klingons could become a new version of the Jem'Hadar.
When the Federation received word and even images of what Cardassians like Mosset were doing to the Klingons, the general reaction was horror now the Cardassians were revealed to be vicious to their defeated foes. They were horrified when Mosset created a drug which was designed to cause However sympathy for the Klingons was limited.
Thanks to Gowron's need to keep his people happy, and due to the Klingon's bloodthirsty antics while they knew the Dominion was on the other side of the wormhole, many people had been killed or tortured, even enslaved. Many refugees had made it into Federation space, with the alliance restored they were allowed to go free. The Klingon soldiers had bigger concerns. There were even a few in Starfleet and in the Federation who felt the re-signing of the Khitomer Accords to be a mistake. They believed the Klingons should pay for what they did to Federation citizens.
The smartest thing the Klingons should have done would have been to stop fighting other races, getting into small, meaningless and irrelevant skirmishes up and down the Beta Quadrant, and focus on building up their fleet, but instead, they had gone on a pointless rampage and believed they could win by turning the whole Alpha Quadrant into a massive Klingon Empire.
And like the fools many of them were, the Klingons arrogantly refused to see that they were doing the Jem'Hadar's work for them by making it easier to conquer the Alpha Quadrant.
It was almost a laugh for many to see the Klingons understand the depths of their mistake. Personally many people openly and publicly stated the Cardassians should be allowed to wipe the Klingons out.
It was fortunate the Klingons regained their alliance with the Federation despite all of that. Without their aid, the Klingons would have lost. The Cardassian's ships were augmented with Dominion made weapons and shields, making it easier for them to tear through the Klingon's defences.
All of the new colonies the Klingon Empire foolishly conquered and annexed in the last year and a bit were lost. The Cardassians overran them, firing biological weapons into the atmospheres of the planets and killing millions of Klingons.
All the time, their threats were relayed straight to the High Council, reminding them of their brutal arrogance and how they were going to be slaves to the Cardassians forever. For the inhabitants of the conquered planets, the Klingons finally understood the depths of their mistake. Not only were their colonies being razed to the ground with orbital bombardment, but many of them were also exposed to biological weapons so by the time the Cardassians arrived in force there were few Klingons alive to fight them. What made it even worse was the Cardassians turned their own precious honour back on them.
The Cardassians did the worst thing the Klingons had ever expected; after everything they had gone through, the bombardments, the plagues, when the invasion came, the Cardassians didn't kill them. No, they stunned them. They denied the Klingons the right to die, knowing it would inflict a lifetime wound impossible to counteract.
The Klingons were enslaved, and for the first time ever they endured their first taster of what the Bajorans had endured over the decades during the Occupation. Some of the Klingons, remembering their galactic history, knew the Bajorans had found ways to resist and tried to find ways and means of doing it.
But the Cardassians who had conquered them had learnt from their mistakes and were prepared for any countermove. The Klingons were worked to death in newly opened mines as they methodically stripped the planets and asteroids bare of any mineral wealth to expand the Dominion-Cardassian war machine. They were not allowed to meet, and the crude huts the Klingon slave workers were forced to live in were under constant surveillance thanks to the new Obsidian Order. The Klingons, while intelligent, didn't have the knowledge or the experience to find the listening devices. Some of them were inside the Klingons, as they ate them and the devices used the intestines as transmitters.
The worst thing was the genetic and surgical experiments.
The Cardassians, delighting in the opportunity after two years of being at war with the Klingons, took to the slaughter with glee. Klingons of all ages - the Cardassians didn't discriminate - were victims of experimentation. The Klingons inside the huts were forced to hear and listen to the screams of everyone as Cardassian 'doctors' experimented on them. From their discoveries, the Cardassians discovered a drug that instantly addicted their Klingon slaves to work for them. The drug was truly horrible. The Cardassians would addict their slaves to it and wait for a small amount of time while the drug took effect, and then give them another dose to relieve the worst of the symptoms, and then it would begin again. Once the Klingons were truly addicted, they would be sent to work on and on as the drug withdrawal made them desperate for a fix while the Cardassians held it over….and they would receive the next dose as a reward for good behaviour. After a few weeks the Cardassians had total control, escape plans and fighting back options became a thing of the past.
While the Dominion war raged throughout the Alpha Quadrant, the Dominion forces within the Gamma Quadrant were plagued by the constant Federation raiding attacks in their territory. The raids came several months after the war was begun. Starfleet had needed the time frame to finish installing the Asgard hyperdrive and weapons and improvements to the shields. When they were finished, the Federation began taking the war to the Dominion.
Dozens of shipyards and Jem'Hadar birthing facilities were attacked in both the Alpha and Gamma Quadrants. There was even talk about finding the Founder's Homeworld and blockading it. The attacks on Gamma Quadrant facilities and an attack on Cardassia Prime where the Federation destroyed dozens of ships and even launched an attack against the planet itself (many admirals secretly believed, justified or not, the Cardassians needed to pay) shook the war.
Prolonged it.
Many in Starfleet wanted to drive the war and keep it going until the Dominion and their allies were unable to keep up. As months wore on, more and more of the Odyssey's database was raided. Hyperdrive technology allowed the Federation to slow the Dominion down and launch terrifyingly vicious raids against Dominion worlds in the Gamma Quadrant, with increasing severity.
