Season 1 Episode 2: A Couple, A Point of Failure

Part 1 – Paige's First Week

Paige walked through the door for work a little flustered and a little late.

"Sorry I'm late. Uh, Ralph's sick again." Paige said to Walter as she walked into the garage upset about Ralph not feeling well.

"That's two days in a row, huh, pal?" Walter said to Ralph as he made his way in.

"Yeah, his fever won't break. I'm gonna take him to the doctor at 10:00 and then my neighbor can watch him. If that's okay?"

"Mm-hmm." Walter mumbled, realizing what was going on almost instantly.

"Are you okay? You don't look so…" Paige asked Walter, concerned about her boyfriend.

"Never been healthier." Walter said while looking through the mail.

Walter handed out paychecks to everyone, which made them all happy.

"Hey, seriously, what's wrong?" Paige asked again seeing something was bothering him.

"I'm fine." Walter said, giving his go to answer when he really didn't want to discuss something.

"Clearly." Paige said back to him knowing they would talk later about it.

"So is Ralph by the way. He hacked the thermometer. Recalibrated the digital display." Walter informed Paige with a sense of pride in Ralph over what he had done.

"He did what? Ralph?" Paige asked.

"He hates school. We all those of us with a math proficiency. The gifted class curriculum will help but we need some other ways to help make it more challenging for him to get through the day. I wasn't sure he would be quite this advanced already." Walter was saying to Paige and then leaned down towards Ralph, "You know, to get through the day, I would look at the clock and create formulas expressing trigonomic functions based on the clock hands. My sister suggested that to me a long time ago."

Paige remembered Walter saying he never brought her up around work, so she tried to help play it off for him.

"Oh, I didn't know you had a sister. Is she…" Paige asked trying not to raise suspicion she already knew he had a sister.

"Enabled too? Not like us. But in her own way." Walter replied.

"What's his story today?" Paige asked as she found herself near Sly.

"Don't know but that's only the second time he's ever mentioned his sister." Sly told her.

Cabe called Walter with a job, and after he hung up with him, he told everyone it was time to go. They were going to meet the Governor of California.

"Paige, Ralph's school is on the way, so we'll drop him off." Walter announced to everyone as they were heading out.

They arrived at the address they were given and were all getting out of Paige's car.

"The new car rides nice." Walter told her, hoping to give her some confidence around the team.

"Steady paycheck equals safe car for my kid." Paige said for all of them to hear and then she turned to Walter and winked at him. And as she walked up next to him she whispered "thank you" in his ear as her hand also grasped a hold of his as they continued walking next to each other.

As they approached the house, they saw lots of security and a van from the Center for Disease Control. The sight of the CDC van spooked Sly. And as Cabe approached them, he saw Happy and Toby not acting professionally either. Toby's phone started making donkey noises and Cabe looked miffed. He only allowed Walter and Paige to enter the house, telling Walter he needed to look at a computer in there. Directing everyone else to remain outside.

Cabe introduced Walter and Paige to Governor Lane. When Walter first spoke with the Governor, he was abrasive. Basically, telling him to keep all the political B.S. out of it and to just tell him what's going on. The governor didn't take offense to it, all he cared about was whether he could help his daughter or not.

The governor's daughter seemed to be deathly sick; quarantined and laboring to breathe. She didn't look like she was doing well at all. Medical personnel were all around her, but no one had any answers. After all the tests they ran on her, she only tested positive for a common cold. Doctors were saying she had less than 24 hours to live. Walter asked about several different types of diseases to look for and none of them came back positive. Walter then told them it sounded like a medical problem to him, and he didn't understand why he was there. The way he spoke came off as cold and uncaring. Paige saw the opportunity to step in and de-escalated the situation. It was a good thing that she did. She spoke to the governor, and she was able to make a connection with him. The governor showed them his daughter Helena's laptop with the virus on it.

Walter started thinking through the attack and realized that only Helena was being targeted, no one else in the house was sick. After figuring out what he thought was going on he started to unzip the plastic quarantine barrier scaring Governor Lane and all the other people caring for her.

"Give the girl some cool air. She's hot enough." Walter told them as he finished opening the plastic around her.

He told everyone there that they were safe, the virus was custom built to only affect Helena. No one was quite sure if he knew what he was talking about or not. He told them it was a biohack, and explained to them it was a new modern way of attacking someone using chemicals.

After looking at the laptop for a few minutes, Walter unplugged the laptop to take it with him and told the governor to let them do their job, and not to do anything irrational or stupid. Paige knew he meant well, but she also knew she would have to talk to him more about his people skills.

Back at the garage, the whole team was trying to figure out anything they could to help the sick girl. They just weren't getting results fast enough for their boss.

Walter got frustrated and smashed his coffee mug and cut his hand. He went upstairs as the others kept working on a solution. Paige followed him wanting to help and thought it might be a good time to talk to him.

"Don't say "I'm fine"." Paige told him, figuring that was going to be how he started the conversaiton with her again.

"I was gonna say I'll live." Walter told her as she looked at his hand.

What's eating you? You're acting… I'm tempted to use the word emotional." Paige told him hoping to get him to open up.

"Particularly challenging problems create… impatience" Walter told her, thinking about something else he was struggling with.

"But you were already off this morning when you came in. You only became impatient when you saw that little girl in her bed. Does this have something to do with Megan?" Paige asked trying to figure out why he was upset.

"Yeah, she reminded me of a problem I couldn't solve." Walter told her knowing she wasn't going to be satisfied with his answer.

"You realize the more evasive you are, the more I'll press. Let me in Walter, let me help you." Paige told him offering him her hand to hold.

Walter told her some about Megan and how he couldn't solve her problem.

"Thank you for calming me down and for being there for me. I needed that. Oh, and for my hand." Walter told her and then gave her a kiss before they shared a hug together.

"I know there is more to the story, but for now, I'm glad you at least opened up a little. It's progress." She told him with another kiss on his cheek.

"Walter. We've got something." They yelled from downstairs.

As Walter and Paige made their way back downstairs, they found out the team was able to mirror the infected laptop. Walter was then able to trace where the emails were being sent from. He recognized the code that was being used and they were out the door and on their way.

They headed over to the hacker hangout and Cabe yelled for silence as they first entered the building, causing the noise in the room to drain out. Toby quickly assessed everyone and tried to analyze who the culprit was. He did, and they were able to contain him after Walter tackled him as he tried to run away. The team had never seen Walter react that way before. Something was certainly still weighing on his mind.

They got the hacker to talk, and they were informed that three other emails were sent out at the same time as th one to the governor's daughter. All of them to children. Scorpion was able to determine that all four of the email recipients were former employees at Vlaxco Pharmaceuticals back in 2008. Through more research they were able to deduce Helena's attack was over a drug called Trexicane.

Vlaxco refused to hand over the drug trial records from the study they had done, so Scorpion decided the only way to get the records they needed was to break in and get them themselves.

Walter devised a plan to gain them entrance to the building. Sylvester was tasked with the one going into the building and memorizing all the names of people who participated in the study. Happy and Toby were to create a diversion to give Sly enough time to do his job without being noticed. For the plan to work, Walter needed to create a coupon to a nearby sandwich shop and attach a virus to it to gain entrance into the company's wireless network. As Sly was finishing up memorizing the last of the names, his cover was blown. Happy and Toby were unable to detain Jed Hausler from the building any longer. Walter had copied his ID badge for Sly to use to gain access to the office building after he downloaded the fake coupon. The race was now on to get Sylvester out of the building before the whole plan was ruined.

With some quick thinking from Walter and Paige, they were able to navigate Sly through the building before he was caught. Paige acting as the calming voice of reason getting him through some of the times when he was most scared.

Back at the garage, they were now making real progress, Toby was working through all the possible suspects and had it narrowed down to only a few possibilities. As he was determining who he thought it was, Cabe spoke up and told them he knew who it was. He said it was Robert Richter, he lost a child who could have been treated with the drug if it was released, saying he lost more than anyone. They found out where he worked and quickly headed to his office at Venice College of Science and once there, they discovered what they needed to see after Walter found his laptop with the spray patterns on it.

They would send the data to the CDC who could reverse engineer the virus and have an antidote ready in two hours. Cabe asked if Walter was sure about this solution, and he said he was. Scorpion had saved the day again. Paige was happy to have been a part of the case; her first with them. The four children would all be safe.

But before they could celebrate, Walter determined there was a fifth target, and it was the Governor himself.

They tried to contact him, but he had left his house and was on the move. They traced him to a mall nearby. They raced to Marina Beach Plaza and scanned the area for the governor. After several frantic minutes of running through the mall, they finally spotted him, but it looked to be too late, as he was being sprayed by the virus built to kill him in seconds.

Walter quickly lit a fire under the smoke detector causing the sprinkler system to turn on, stopping the mist from entering the lungs of Governor Lane. Now it looked that everyone had been saved.
