Part 3 – Dinner and a picnic

Paige woke up Saturday feeling better than she had in years. She had just finished her first week of work at Scorpion. In the last seven days, she had gotten a new car, a new wardrobe and a new job that paid her so much more than she had ever made in her life. All of it thanks to her boyfriend. And next week, she got to move her and her son out of the rodent infested apartment they had been living in month to month into a real condo with amenities. Not the running water and electricity kind like she sometimes had right now; but the workout room, washer/dryer, covered parking and swimming pool kind that she had dreamed about having.

Toby still hadn't apologized about the airport run-in, and she wasn't holding her breath for one either. Walter had been over the top kind to her, and he was the same way with Ralph. Ralph had asked to go by the garage pretty much every day after school was over. So much so that Paige thought she may have to talk to Walter to make sure there wasn't an issue of them always being there since it was where he lived as well as where they worked. Even though he had told her they were always welcome to be there.

Sleeping in on a Saturday was never a luxury she had before. So, when her nine year old son had to pry her away from her bed a little after 9:30 because he was hungry, she gave him a big hug and hopped out of bed to do just that. Fifteen minutes later and some yummy french toast for the two of them was served. Paige got some laundry together to do at the nearby Laundromat and a second set of clothes to take to the Dry Cleaners. The first time in her life she had ever had to do that. Ralph as usual accompanied her to do the laundry and as a treat they stopped and got some food for lunch on the way home.

She got a text message from Walter soon after they made it back.

Hope you got to sleep in today. Have an idea for dinner. Unless you guys want to pick a place to go.

Slept till after 9:00, felt so good. We are up for anything. You can call or come by anytime. We just finished laundry.

How does 4:30 sound to come by and then we can decide on dinner.

Sounds good, see you at 4:30 ;)

Paige spent the next couple of hours straightening up her small apartment. She wanted it to look nice for when Walter got there.

Pretty much to the second, there was a light knock on the front door at exactly 4:30.

"Hey Walter! Come in." Paige said to him as they hugged and then she yelled to Ralph, "Hey sweetie, guess who's here?"

"Hi Walter." Ralph said seconds later as he was carrying his laptop in his arms.

"Hey pal, how have you been doing? Working on something?" Walter asked as he ruffled his hair, causing Paige to smile, just like every time she witnessed it.

"I'm working on the homework you gave me to do. I got most of it figured out, but I can't get the last part to work. It keeps going in a loop."

"Wow, you got some of the hard parts done, that makes you more advanced at this than Toby already." Walter told him with a smile.

Walter sat down on the couch next to Ralph and showed him how to do the rest of the stuff on his laptop that he couldn't figure out. Walter wanted to teach him everything he could about coding and Ralph had been a fast study. Sylvester had helped with him as well throughout the week and both of them could see the skills Ralph already possessed.

Paige had been sitting in the chair next to them watching them interact while relaxing and thumbing through a magazine. Every so often Walter would look up at her and smile, and she would do the same. A little before 5:00 Ralph had finished with his work and went off to his room to tinker with some other stuff.

"Sorry Paige, I didn't intend to walk in and not talk to you." Walter told her hoping not to have upset her.

"Oh no, no. It was fine. Seeing you with him makes me happy. Thank you for being so kind to him and helping him. Nobody has ever shown an interest in Ralph before, it is really special to see you with him."

"Ralph has unlimited potential. I only hope I will be able to keep up with him soon." Walter told her.

"I'm sure you will manage. And again, thank you for everything you have done for both of us Walter."

"It has been my pleasure." Walter said with full sincerity.

"And in one week we get to get out of this shi.., crappy apartment." Paige smiled.

"About that, I um called a moving company and they have a truck reserved for you, I just wanted to make sure you were okay with it before I booked it, in case you hadn't gotten one yet."

"I didn't even think of that, are they expensive? We should only need one trip; we don't have much to take with us." Paige said to him.

"Ooh, I um didn't expect you to pay for it, I just wanted to make sure you approve of the time."

"Walter, no. I am paying for it. You already gave us way more than enough money, and I got a full paycheck from you yesterday even though I've only been there a week."

"I insist Paige, this is an added expense you didn't plan for, so I should be the one who pays, since you are moving because of your new job." Walter told her insisting that he should pay for the move.

Paige didn't want Walter to pay, but she remembered back to yesterday and his sister telling her how he was generous. She already knew that of course, but she could see he truly wanted to pay.

"Two conditions then, you have to come over and eat with us anytime I want, no questions asked." Paige started.

"That's even better! More time with you and free food. And I have it on good authority you make some good chicken meals." Walter told her before they kissed.

"Mmm, you sure are a good kisser, Walter O'Brien." Paige told him as they barely separated from their kiss.

"I try!" He said before leaning in and they kissed again.

"And two, you need to help us pack stuff up this week. Maybe help me figure out how to arrange everything in the new place."

"Again, more time with you and Ralph, I gladly accept." Walter said with a smile.

They spent the next 45 minutes talking. Paige was looking forward to their picnic tomorrow with Megan so she could meet Ralph.

"I didn't tell Ralph much about your sister yet, I wasn't sure what you were okay with him knowing about her. I figured I would let you explain to him whatever you thought would be okay for him to hear."

"Thank you for that. I want him to know as much as he asks if you are okay with that. With the way Ralph's mind works, he will always want to know as much as he can about things. He may not understand some of them at first, but when he can process through them, that is how he will learn. And he will never forget them. So, the more we explain to him and teach him, the brighter and more intelligent he will become."

"I don't know what we would have done if we didn't meet you, Walter. You are going to make such a big difference for Ralph. I'll never be able to repay you for that." Paige told him as her eyes filled with tears.

"Paige, you will make all the difference for him. Your love and support for him has given him a strong foundation. That is the most important part; without it, he would struggle like the rest of us do. Don't ever sell yourself short on that." Walter told her as he grasped her hands lovingly.

"You are so kind and sweet Walter." Paige told him as she ran her hands down his cheeks before kissing him again.

They finished talking and had Ralph join them before they left for dinner.

"I was thinking we could maybe share a pizza and some appetizers for dinner and then I have a surprise set up for you Ralph."

"Mmm we like pizza, don't we Ralph?" Paige said with a smile.

"Can we get double pepperoni and meatball?" Ralph asked.

"A genius's favorite kind. And if you let me take you guys to my favorite pizza place, I can prove it to you." Walter told them with a smile.

Walter called on the way and asked for his favorite booth.

"Wow Ralph, we might be going to dinner with a celebrity tonight. They even have their own special booth." Paige said smiling at Ralph while pressing her fingers into Walter's side getting a real big smile from him in the process as she let him drive her car there.

Walter told them this was the first job he ever did when he started Scorpion; setting up their network for them. When they arrived, he showed Ralph the different pizzas they had and "The Genius", which was named after him, was one of the options. Hand tossed, double pepperoni with meatball - 21.97. He told them the secret message in the price. The number 2 in the price was for Thanks Walter O'Brien and the 197 for his iq.

"You know, that's my favorite kind too. So non-geniuses must have good taste too." Paige said with a wink and a kiss for Walter causing him to turn red as a tomato.

They finished eating and then Walter took them to the planetarium for Ralph's surprise. A night looking at the stars through a big telescope sounded pretty cool to Ralph. They also laid out some blankets and watched all the stars appear on the ceiling during the displays that Walter had selected for them to view. When Ralph got to look through the powerful telescope, Walter and Paige took the opportunity to make out for a while. They all had a great time.

Sunday afternoon Walter picked up Megan around four and they were going to meet Paige and Ralph at the beach. Paige demanded that she was going to supply the food for the picnic. And Walter found out pretty quickly that when Paige demanded something he was better off just agreeing. Even geniuses like him still had lots to learn.

Ralph had gotten used to being around new people the past week at Scorpion and he was doing so much better socially. Paige knew already that she without a doubt had made the right decision by not getting on that plane. Megan was overly kind to him too, and he felt safe around her instantly. She even offered up free babysitting if they ever needed it. Hint. Hint. Ralph asked her some questions about MS and if she couldn't explain it to him, Walter did. Paige was a little worried at some of the things he asked about, but as Walter had told her earlier, he was fine with telling him anything he wanted to know. By the end of the picnic, Ralph knew everything he would ever need to know about MS.

Paige had made some chicken tenders for them, remembering Megan ask for chicken at the hospital, and also had a big salad and lots of veggies and fruits for everyone to eat. They spent over three hours there talking and laughing, including lots of stories Megan was sharing about her little brother, much to the delight of both Paige and Ralph. Ralph liked hearing about all the funny things that happened to Walter when he was a kid. Paige thought they were cute too.

Walter and Paige snuck off for a walk down the beach just before sunset while Ralph explained some of the computer stuff Walter had been teaching him to Megan.

"You know, if you repeat any of those stories to the team, I might have to..." Walter started to tell her as they were walking.

"Might have to what?" Paige asked him with a big smile while her arms were holding on to one of Walter's as they walked.

"I don't know quite yet, but it will be something." Walter told her as they stopped to watch the waves roll in.

"Your secrets are safe with me... for now." Paige told him as she placed her head on his shoulder.

"Thank you for today, by the way. Megan seems happy. After reading that letter a couple of days ago, this is uh exactly what I needed."

"Of course. You just remember to always let me in, okay? I like you a lot, Walter. This has been very nice." Paige shared with him, hoping to let him know she was having some of the same feelings he was.

"I um, uh, yes it um has been very nice. Amazing honestly." Walter told her as they kissed as the waves were lapping at their feet.

"Please don't mess this up little brother." Megan whispered to herself watching them kiss with the sun setting behind them.
