Chapter One
Two months later….
When I opened my eyes this morning, I knew right away that something's wrong with my body but I can't put a finger to it.
Then I felt it….
The nausea hitting me hard as I sat up in bed and before I can even think any further. I found myself running to the bathroom and hugging the bowl as I spilled all the contents of my stomach. When my nausea and vomiting was over, I push myself away from the bowl and rested my back on the bathtub next to it. The beads of cold sweat around my body made me chilly and I felt the heavy pressure settling in my belly button as I try to figure out if what was wrong with me. In the end, I deduced that it must be the food that I ate the previous night but a small voice in my head keeps telling me that it was something else.
A week had pass and more strange things happened.
The nausea and vomiting had thankfully minimized a bit but it was still there whenever I wake up in the morning. I was in my office finishing up some paper works in my table when I noticed another change. It was the scent of my best friend's aftershave. I don't mind it before but this time I made sure that I'm as far away from Harry Potter who looked at me like the puppy that has been hit in the gut.
"I think something's wrong with me." I told him when he tried to approach but I took a step back because I can't take the smell. "Your smell disgusts me." I told him which made me cringed at my tactless choice of words.
Harry tried smelling his clothes but I quickly dissuade him. "It's not you. It's the scent of your aftershaves."
Harry looked at me confuse. "But it's the same brand that I was using before and you never complained about it."
"That's why I said there's something wrong with me." I sighed. "I can't figure it out but I'm feeling a lot of strange things this week."
"Such as?"
"Nausea, vomiting and for the first time in my life. I've been picky with my food lately." I said exasperated and the look on Harry's face only says one thing that even I had ended up in that same conclusion. "Whatever it was that you were thinking it's not what it is." I told him. "And yes, I know my symptom leads to that conclusion but I'm telling you it's impossible because I was never been intimate with any man since ever."
"Did you go and see a healer?" I shook my head "Then I think it's time for you to go and see one." He said firmly as I tried to protest. "Hermione, you are the most logical person I knew so stop being stubborn for once and take good care of yourself." He said as he tried to come close to me again but changes his mind when I wrinkled my nose. "Promise me that you'll see a healer today?"
I sighed and nodded. Harry was right the longer that I assumed things on my own will only result to more confusion and questions. It's better to go and see a healer even if I don't want to.
Luna Lovegood smiled after moving her wand around my body. Even if I don't hear her utter a single word, I knew that my old friend was using nonverbal spells as she runs diagnostic tests on me.
"You are in perfect health, Hermione." Luna said after awhile then writes something down on the chart that she had put away in the nearby table when she entered the exam room. "I never knew that you are dating someone but congratulations, Hermione. You are pregnant!" Luna said happily as she turned around to look at me once again.
Pregnant…? Dating…?
An impossible occurrence happened. Luna must be joking. How can I be pregnant when I was never been intimate with any man?
"When was the last time you've been intimate with anyone?" Luna asked me which confuses the hell out of me. "You've been mumbling," she said as an explanation.
"Two months ago but that was with a woman." I said incredulously
Luna only arched her brow as if telling me 'have you lost your mind? We are surrounded by magic'
"But she's a muggle."
"Are you sure?"
When I think about it, I'm not really sure if the woman I slept with was actually a muggle. I only assumed that she was and if the woman was the one responsible for making me pregnant then….
"You slept with someone who has creatures blood in them." Luna said it for me as we stared at each other.
I can't remember anything after that conversation with Luna. All I know, my mind went blank and then the darkness.
When I opened my eyes once again, I was met with Harry's worried face hovering above me. "How long was I out?" I asked as I look around at the unfamiliar room.
"Ten hours at least. Luna said to leave you to rest because it seems that you were pretty exhausted this past week." Harry explained as he leaned back and sat down on the chair next to my bed.
"Am I still in the hospital?"
"Yes. Luna put you in a private room after you pass out then informed me."
Harry and I stared at each other silently, waiting for the other to speak up first but it seems that my best friend will not say anything unless I do it first. "What did Luna tell you exactly?"
Harry shook his head. "Nothing specific. She only said that you pass out and sleeping it off in a hospital bed." He frowned. "Did something else happen? Are you alright?"
I looked away from my best friend's imploring green eyes and look up instead at the white ceiling as I contemplate on how to tell Harry about my condition.
"I'm pregnant." I said without preamble because there's no use in hiding the facts from the man who had been on my side since we were eleven years old. "And I don't know how it happened." I said looking at him. "I meant… I know how it happened but I didn't know that it was possible."
"It's possible if your partner at the time has magical creature's blood in them." Luna's voice interrupted whatever Harry was about to say as she entered my room. "It's good to see you awake, Hermione." Then she looked at Harry. "Hello, Harry."
"Hi." Harry replied and stood from his chair to give Luna space as she stood next to my bed.
"So… You are pregnant…" Harry said awkwardly as he looked at me and I rolled my eyes at him.
I pushed myself up in bed and leaned my back on the pillows that Luna quickly arranges for me. "Can we know if what kind of magical creature got me pregnant?"
Luna didn't answer right away but had that faraway look on her face that Harry and I was familiar with. Luna always had this look whenever she's in deep thoughts that other people tease her about and was nicknamed Loony Lovegood during our time in school.
"Yes. We can run a test when you reach the twelve week of your pregnancy." Luna finally said then looked at me unsure. "That is, of course… assuming that you'll be keeping the baby?"
I looked at Luna indignantly and sighed. I can't blame my friend for assuming things because getting myself pregnant by a stranger was my own fault. I looked down at my still flat stomach and unconsciously touch it. The baby that is now growing in my womb maybe a result of a one night of thirst with a stranger but its life is innocent and shouldn't be blame with my own mistake. "I'm keeping it." I told them when I look at my friends.
Luna nodded and gave me an approving smile while Harry just smiled and shrugged as if telling me that he'll be there by my side like he always does.
"Would you like me to find the person who got you pregnant?" Harry asked to address the big elephant in the room which was the other parent of my child that I don't know how to deal with. I don't want to talk about it yet but I guess Harry wants to deal with it now. "All I need is the sketch of the face."
I shook my head no.
As tempting as it was to accept Harry's proposal, it was impossible to find the beautiful stranger even if I give him the sketch and he uses his connections as the Head Auror of the Ministry of Magic.
"Thank you, Harry. But I don't think you'll find her in this country." I explained and upon seeing the confuse look on Harry's face, I explained. "She had this heavy accented voice that I can't point my finger on so I'm just assuming that she's not from this country."
"I can still try though." Harry insisted but I raised my hand to stop him.
"There's no use finding her. Besides, what will I gain after I found her?" I asked, looking at my friends with arched brow. "If it's about my reputation, I never cared about it." I shrugged to make my point.
"Oh… I can see the future headlines now in all wizarding papers when the news about your pregnancy gets out." Luna said giddily. "War Hero Hermione Granger was knocked up after a night of passion with a stranger!" she said dramatically which was very rare for Luna to do so and made us laugh.
"Even if you don't want to find that person, I'd still want the sketch of the face." Harry insisted. "I'm not doing it for you but for the sake of your baby." I opened my mouth to argue with him but Harry raised his hand to stop me. "We both know that this baby will ask questions one day about their other parent. You don't want your child chasing someone blindly just because you are being stubborn don't you?"
"Make sense." Luna nodded her head as she agreed with Harry and they left me no choice but to concede.
"Okay. I'll come by to your office Monday morning." I told Harry and turned my gaze to Luna. "Can I go home now? I think I'm feeling better already."
Luna nodded and pulled out a piece of parchment from her healer robe's pocket. "I prescribed you potions for your nausea and pre – natal vitamins which can be bought in muggle pharmacy." I took the parchment and Harry helped me out of the bed. "And no apparition of any kind because we don't want to put any strain on your baby."
I nodded again and Harry carried my things for me as we bid Luna goodbye. Harry and I took the long route that will lead us to the busy streets of London. We didn't discuss anything about my condition as we walk the long corridors of St. Mungo's afraid that someone might hear us.
When we reach the street, I raised my arm to shield my eyes from the bright morning light. "I'll never get use to that." I mumbled as Harry hailed me a cab and opened the back door for me.
"Call me if anything happens?"
I nodded and kiss him on the cheek before getting in the cab and told the driver my home address. My house isn't that far from the hospital but it still took thirty minutes ride in the cab. My house was located in one of London's suburbs, not the wizarding ones but the suburb area where muggles live.
After my faithful encounter with Harry on that train going to Hogwarts fifteen years ago. My life was turned upside down. Every year that I spend with him was a new adventure and another threat to our lives. It was all because of that one prophesy that involves his name and as his best friend, I stood by his side no matter what the consequences it brought until the war happened and I almost died in the hands of one lunatic woman but we still won the war. My best friend killed the evil man that the wizarding world fears the most and everyone lives happily ever after as if…. I snorted at my own thoughts and shook it off.
After the war, all those who fought alongside Harry were deemed heroes of our time but it was different for me and him. I was named the Golden Girl and they called Harry the Golden Boy, people put us on pedestal that we never asked for but despite our fame, we both chose to live the life that we want for ourselves.
Harry continued to pursue his dream in becoming an Auror while I continued on the path in protecting those who can't protect themselves, with lots of efforts and hard work Harry and I reached the top positions of our departments. This year, I was promoted to Deputy Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement while Harry was promoted to Head Auror.
My reminiscence of my past was put in a hard stop when I get off of the cab and turned to face my house. There a few feet from me, in front of my two storey house where it stood tall and proud along with its neighbors with the same designs. A tall woman with long silvery blonde hair was standing in front of it. There's no need for the woman to turn around for me to recognize her but she did and our eyes met.
I inhaled sharply when red luscious lips smiled. "It's been awhile, darling."
