Summary/disclaimer: Time for another chapter of the Spartan and the Legionary. Enjoy the 3000-word chapter. I don't own RWBY or Halo. Monty Oum, Microsoft, 343, and Rooster Teeth do.
(UNSC Infinity)
Leo stood in his full armor while he shook his head. He was unsure of what would come next. If the Covenant launched another attack? They'd have to be ready for such a force.
"Captain? They're coming up now." Leo heard from Roland as he hummed to himself. "And, presto, instant delegation." Roland joked to himself.
Leo and Palmer along with the group of Spartan-IVs that stood guard around the memorial park all turned. All were curious when it came down to it. Ironwood, Winter, a contingent of his soldiers, Ozpin, and finally Pyrrha.
"This is an impressive area for a ship," Ozpin said to which Lasky nodded to the headmaster. "How could you do it in this day and age?" Ozpin asked as Lasky chuckled.
"Infinity's memorial park is said to surpass the ones back home. It's quite interesting." Lasky said before he shook his head. "But I don't suppose that's why your both here. I'm sorry I'm not Lord Hood, he's usually better with these types of talks than me." Lasky added to himself.
"'Lord Hood'?" Ironwood asked to which Palmer nodded.
"He's the man in charge of the fleets of the UNSC. He'd probably be back in his offices now." Sarah said as Leo shrugged.
"Don't think we can talk that openly with ONI and some of its buddies here at the moment, to be honest," Leo said as he shook his head. "I don't know what to even do when it comes down to it. Those jackasses are almost as bad as the covenant." Leo added before he blinked.
Pyrrha turned her head to the spartan who said nothing to her. There was an awkward silence as the spartan and girl shared a look that could only say so much. He knew better than to expect their issues to be done and over with.
"Commander? I think you and your men can stand down for now." Leo heard from Lasky as both soldiers were silent.
"Sorry, sir. There's a pretty high-level talk. I think we all should keep on our best behavior." Palmer said to which Leo looked at the woman.
He knew not to mess with Palmer who technically outranked all the Spartans aboard. He still knew that there was also an issue if she caused issues when it came down to it. Still? There was an issue that needed to be dealt with it.
"Hey, we can relax, ma'am," Leo said as he looked at Lasky. "Sir? How about we sweep the permitter? There's a lot of ground for us to cover anyway. We could come back in 10 minutes and leave 2 of us here?" Leo started to say to which he was silent afterward.
Lasky nodded, giving both the unofficial go-ahead they needed to escape this awkward situation. There were plenty of things to be done anyway. Still? There was plenty of work to be done at this moment.
"Yeah, good idea, spartan." Leo heard from the captain. "Commander Palmer? Leave 2 Spartans here, if there was a need for all of them? I'll call for them." Lasky put in as he shook his head.
Lasky watched as Leo started to walk away with annoyance as he did so. There was a small part of him that wondered if the Spartans were simply on edge. There was a combative nature within them at the end of the day, just like any spartan.
'They want war with the covenant. So many Spartans who'd lost something in the war. How many of them were regular marines, ODSTs, army soldiers before they were uplifted into Spartans?' Lasky mentally asked himself before he sighed and waited for their mission to be completed.
(With Leo)
Leo looked into one of the cages before he gazed into one. This park was as amazing as it looked. He almost wondered how many locations had parks similar to these. The covenant had destroyed so much.
'Then the didact showed up and Del Rio wanted to flee to Earth rather than try and stop him. How many people did we lose because of that? How many people could be saved if we stayed and fight?' Leo asked himself before he hung his head.
Despite his standards? He wanted to choke Del Rio and plenty of the soldiers who had been complacent in the attack to do nothing… Or had covered the truth up.
"Leo," Leo heard while he looked over his shoulder.
"Sometimes I wonder if you follow me around so I need to talk to you," Leo stated to himself before he shook his head. "Yeah? What is it? I don't think they want me to talk on a mission for good reason. It's why they put me on patrol duty. Why did you come to a peace meeting between the UNSC and the others?" Leo asked with a raised eyebrow as he did so.
Pyrrha fell silent while she pondered what to say or do. There was part of her who had simply wanted another talk with him. She wondered why the spartan had wanted to continue running from her. Pyrrha wondered if he hated the idea of speaking about his past…. Or if the military simply didn't want anyone to know about their supersoldiers.
'Did Spartans hate this sort of thing that much? Is talking about their past that horrible? What did they go through to hate it to this degree?' Pyrrha mentally asked herself while she sighed and started to wish this battle of wits was done.
Leo fell silent as he waited for the woman to speak. There were a thousand questions inside his head… All of them were shattering his brain. He was a soldier, not a scientist, not a man who had the answers.
"Things aren't as easy to explain as you think," Leo said as he hefted his weapon towards her. "There's a lot of horrible people in the UNSC who don't want people to know… Why do you think I don't say a lot?" Leo said while he sighed to himself.
Pyrrha was silent now while her friend waited to start as she hummed. She needed to know what happened to him. He wasn't a monster, but he seemed to act like he was. Pyrrha was glad he wasn't an officer as it meant he had no reason to be bothering with other actions.
Still? She was also aware Leo had a certain amount of work to be doing at the moment.
(With Lasky and Ironwood)
Lasky wasn't intimidated by the commander of Atla's military or his soldiers. He stared at the man with an interest that he seemed to match as he cleared his throat.
"Welcome to the Infinity," Lasky stated as Palmer rested a hand on her sidearm. "I'm sorry if it was too long a walk. Infinity was meant to be the flagship of the UNSC." Lasky added while Ironwood nodded.
The general sized him up. It was obvious in his mind that the balance of power shifted at the moment. A warship this size which seemed to outgun the entire military of Remnant? Any sane military officer would wish to nip it in the bud.
"These Covenant are alien soldiers, correct?" Ironwood asked to which Lasky nodded. "And they wish to see humanity destroyed?" Ironwood questioned which also gained a nod from the man.
"We've been at war with the Covies for 30 years if you want to talk longer history," Palmer said as she sighed. "There was plenty of history between them and us," Palmer added before Lasky nodded.
"They're not as powerful as they were then. Infinity outmatches their entire fleet." Lasky said before he nodded to Palmer. "Spartan Palmer ordered the deployment of all available spartan units like Leo. Their resorting to hit and run tactics to do lasting damage." Lasky added before Ozpin raised an eyebrow.
He looked at both Leo and Pyrrha. He was not a stupid man when it came to bonds. He saw both Pyrrha and Leo seemed to be chatting with the other despite Leo's best efforts. It simply wasn't enough.
"This war seems to be rather skilled at making friends of enemies," Ozpin said to which he shook his head.
"We don't want to be anyone's enemy," Lasky said as Leo nodded. "If we did? Leo for example would be blasting all of the people here. Spartan Leo? Would you like to report the events of the recent battle?" Lasky asked as the Spartan slowly started to march forwards.
"Single Covenant Light Cruiser and ground forces assaulted the city. Ms. Nikos and her friends helped me and the marine detachment eliminate their forces." Leo stated as he slowly started to march back and forth. "Not at many officers at the battle and they didn't seem to have a goal rather than conquest and killing. I thought the general's forces had arrived to reinforce the rest of the marines on the ground." Leo added before he shook his head.
"There was many of those… Reptile soldiers." Pyrrha added before Leo turned to them.
"They're called elites or Sangheili," Leo said as he nodded towards the spartan woman. "Their commanders for their soldiers and some of their more skilled soldiers when it comes to war," Leo said before Lasky frowned.
"We haven't spotted their flagship or Jul at the moment," Lasky said before he nodded to Leo.
"Their commander is as much a coward as their old bosses were," Leo said as he sighed to himself. "Their terrorists or a cult by this point rather than anything else," Leo added before he rolled his eyes to himself under his armor.
"They aren't Vale's only enemies," Pyrrha said as she frowned to herself.
"Then we face them," Leo said before he looked at Pyrrha. "General? Captain? If you excuse me? I think I have a talk I need to continue with Ms. Nikos. Captain? Can I patrol the park?" Leo asked while he slowly started to walk around the area.
"We have things handled at the moment, Spartan," Lasky stated as he frowned to himself. "General? Can we talk without security constantly crowding around us? Neither one of us are enemies and none of the Spartans want to be couped up in patrolling the area." Lasky asked while he folded his hands behind his back.
He was well aware of the fact the Spartans wanted to be doing something rather than guarding him. He also noticed both Leo and Pyrrha seemed to need to talk to each other at the moment. He wasn't an idiot and he also realized the Spartans were ready to leave if they weren't needed.
"I'll be back in a bit," Leo said while he slowly started to pace himself towards another part of the park.
Pyrrha followed behind the super soldier who seemed ready to sigh and bend in half. He was well aware this woman had wanted to talk with him. He wasn't mad at her so much as he wanted to be ready to go on another mission. There was plenty of reason to battle the Covenant, and at the time?
She had so many problems on her mind and trying to bother him seemed to not do anything. It was honestly something that seemed as if it wasn't to change anytime soon. It had been a rather odd topic when it came down to it.
Yet he was not one to let it bother him. Leo stared at Pyrrha and crossed his arms while he started to think about what to say or do at the moment. The Spartan had a lot to ponder and a lot to question at the end of the day. It had come down to simple deviations in their tactics.
"I heard a bit from Commander Ambrose," Pyrrha stated to which Leo spun on his heel towards her with a stare that seemed as if she had told him of murder.
It was similar at least when it came to it. There were not many people who had met the commander when it came to it. he hadn't seemed to mind it, yet it was clear on his face that this had bothered him as of now.
"There's a lot he isn't allowed to say at the moment," Leo said while he crossed his arms across his chest. "It's better that way. If it wasn't? then there'd be too much chaos in the world." Leo stated before he sighed.
"Pretending the past didn't happen doesn't help either," Pyrrha said while she seemed to watch her friend nod before glancing away. "It won't help. Trust me." Pyrrha said to which Leo raised an eyebrow before he hung his head.
"It isn't as easy as it seems and it isn't as hard as people say it is," Leo said while he seemed to glance around the room. "Trust me. ONI buries people who try and bring that stuff to light. I've seen a lot of people 'vanish' because they tried to find out what happened. They're not at all ready for what happened. I don't think anyone will be at that stage for a while sadly. "Leo added and placed his hands on his hips as he did so.
She had the same interesting glance he had seen before. The fact that she wasn't at all terrified by what he had said bothered him. If she didn't heed the warnings? They'd hunt her next and that terrified him to no end.
Yet? He had too much on his mind. He stared at Pyrrha before finally clearing his throat.
"Something tells me part of this has something to do with you as well as me," Leo said while he seemed as he crossed his arms and stared at her. "What happened? I can tell when something is bothering someone. This isn't all about me, is it?" Leo questioned with a raised eyebrow at her.
"Not entirely, no," Pyrrha stated to which the Spartan titled their head. "This hasn't been the first time someone has hidden something," Pyrrha said as Leo hummed.
"Those secrets will make people hunt you down and murder you. Neither that nor my past are nice at all." Leo said while he placed a hand on his visor. "I'm not trying to be a jackass. There's a lot on my mind. You keep showing up and making me worry about more than just the war." Leo said as Pyrrha nodded.
"You've been fighting so long that it's all you know, yes?" Leo heard from Pyrrha as he hummed.
"If you know anything about Spartans? You'd know fighting is what we're born to do." Leo said before she raised an eyebrow. "Yes. I have been. I'm a soldier, it's what I'm good at. One war ended and another happened. I can't get distracted by other things. Why? Do you think I'm trying to ghost you all the time because I'm scared? Trust me, I've seen a lot of terrifying crap during the war, you're not really on that list when it comes down to it. No offense." Leo said as he hummed to himself.
"I can handle myself… This isn't the first time I've been targeted." Pyrrha said as Leo nodded.
"Well, you tore through the Covenant. I guess a few people with guns aren't that dangerous." Leo said before he shook his head. "But don't forget they're always going to want you dead. ONI doesn't play nice with anyone. It's kinda why the rest of the UNSC either hates them or considers them to be bogeymen." Leo said as Pyrrha nodded.
"If it means I can still talk with someone I trust? I'll be fine with another enemy." Pyrrha said as Leo chuckled.
"Fine. I'll talk more when this is over with. The last thing I want now is the ship blowing up because I'm not doing my job." Leo said before he turned and looked at Pyrrha.
"You think the Covenant will come to Vale," Pyrrha said to which Leo stared at her.
"The Covenant only cares about power and killing anyone who tries to stop them. If they're gutsy enough to try anything similar to the war? They will come to Vale." Leo said before he shook his head. "The Elites? Those lizard-like warriors with the swords you tore through? Those are the few leaders in the Covenant who want you dead. The only thing they want more than killing is killing strong people that get in the way. Would you like to tell me who one of the strongest people around and tore through dozens of soldiers?" Leo questioned to which Pyrrha crossed her arms.
She had been far too interested in what came next at the time. it was clear they had too little on their minds to simply back down. The fact of the matter was that they had been pushed back this far in the war.
Still? Leo prepared for what to do next. Pyrrha seemed at peace at the second. She seemed more prepared for the coming war now that she was well aware of the reason Leo had become distant for a few seconds.
"What do we do next?" Leo questioned before he seemed to raise an eyebrow. "I'm still curious about what happens next?" Leo asked as he tapped on his armored arms.
Leo seemed to ponder what to do next. He felt more at ease and it became far harder to ignore the fact that he was enjoying this. He and the Spartan slowly started to march towards her.
"What happens next when it comes down to it?" Pyrrha asked herself as well.
