Magical Origins
Author Notes: I know many of you are voicing concerns about Lily's actions. This chapter will have her disciplinary hearing resulting in the destruction of the Quidditch Field and the arsenal attacks on Draco Malfoy.
Year 5: Pride and Prejudice
Tensions at Hogwarts was very high, as they waited to hear the fate of Lily. Lily hasn't been seen since she went back to the castle with Professor McGonagall. Umbridge wanted Lily expelled on the spot. Lily most likely would have been as nearly killing another student as well as endanger the rest of the school were grounds for expulsion, even possible time in Azkaban.
Lily had a mysterious benefactor sudden appear on her defense. An hour into the incident, Umbridge found herself powerless when a letter arrived for her stating Liliana Morris would be facing a disciplinary hearing before the School Governors.
Even if Lily had attacked Malfoy, some questions needed answers. The main issue was, why did Lily attack Malfoy so openly and viciously in front of the entire school.
Four School Governors were arriving in a day, and Umbridge tried to appear presentable. Umbridge was standing with Cornelius Fudge and Lucius Malfoy.
Madam Bones was also present as it was unclear if Lily would be facing criminal charges.
As for the witnesses, even if the entire school had witnessed the event, the only people who heard the altercation was Gryffindor Quidditch Team minus Ron Weasley, and the Slytherin Quidditch Team minus Warrington and Montague.
Harry stood in the staff office with Blaise, Daphne, Tracy, along with Angelina Johnson, Alicia Spinnet, Katie Bell, and the Weasley Twins.
Dumbledore was seated behind the table, along with four of the Governors.
On the side next to Umbridge was Cornelius Fudge – who was clearly here looking for some dirt to use against Dumbledore. Percy Weasley was also present, wearing some of the best robes he's ever own. Fred and George threw a nasty look at Percy, who bluntly ignores his younger brothers. Lucius Malfoy and Narcissa Malfoy were also presented and seated.
In the back, besides, were several Hogwarts Professors. Snape, McGonagall, Sprout, Flitwick.
Lily stood before them, and she didn't even look somewhat concern.
"Now, as this is a disciplinary hearing," said Samuel Wynter, one of the Governors who was seated. "it has been called forth to question the attendance of Liliana Morris and if she should face expulsion and face possible criminal charges."
A young witch who was seated on the side was using quick-quills to record the meeting. Harry didn't know who she was, but he was sure she graduated Hogwarts three years ago from Ravenclaw.
"In attendance and to serve as the judges among this hearing, is Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Department of Education Griffin Jones, Governor Alexander Thompson, Governor Lorelei Mckinney, and myself Head Governor Samuel Wynter. Along with the Board is Madam Amelia Bones, Head of Magical Law Enforcement. The accuse present if Fifth Year student Lilianna Morris."
"Madam Umbridge," said Lorelei Thompson. "as you requested to charge the said accused, you may begin your opening statement."
Umbridge stands up and walks with a grace that made Harry want to gag at her attempt to appear sweet.
"Thank you, Governors," Umbridge said with a fake smile. "the accused knowingly and did so will malice intend, attack a student unprovoked, with the attempt to kill said student despite being in front of the school. I have gathered statements from other students who all reported the accused vicious attacks in the past against the victim."
Given how last minute this had been, Umbridge clearly must have been asking around to gather said statements. Umbridge's hand several parchments to the governors who read the statements.
"Professor Gorloisen, as you wish to speak on behalf of the defendant, you may do so," said Griffin Jones.
Professor Gorloisen did so and stands beside Lily.
"There is no question there is history between the defendant and the victim," said Professor Gorloisen. "Upon my arrival at Hogwarts, I have learned the two have had many fights since they first set foot on Hogwarts. Merely pointing to one of the facts isn't justified, and it violates every law we uphold. Falsely accusing the defendant with malice indent without the full knowledge of the incident or what caused it is blasphemy and a miscarriage of justice."
Umbridge looks at Professor Gorloisen in anger and frustration as these were words well put together. Umbridge was clear she wanted to avoid the witnesses and just have the sentence carried out.
"You speak true, Professor Gorloisen," said Alexander Thompson. "we know of the incident, but we do not know what caused the incident. Given the fact that there is history between the defense and the victim, we must know what caused this incident to occur."
Umbridge clearly did not like where this was going but still tried to maintain her composer. The governors weren't buying her fake smile.
"As they were closest, we will start with the Gryffindor Quidditch Team," said Griffin Jones.
Angelina Johnson stood up and steps forward.
"According to the student body, this incident started when Liliana Morris caught the Golden Snitch in your match against, not only winning the match but saving your team from getting swept, is that correct?" said Samuel Wynter.
"It is," said Angelina Johnson.
"After Liliana Morris caught the snitch, she was bluntly attacked by Cassius Warrington with his Beater's Bat. Hitting her in the head that caused her to fall from her broom. Can you explain what happened next?" asks Lorelei Mckinney.
"Draco landed nearby and started insulting Lily," said Angelina. "he began to mock the Weasley's and said he wished to add a couple more verses to their song 'Weasley is Our King,' but Lily ignores. Fred and George turn to confront Malfoy, but all of us, even Lily tried to restrain them from attacking Malfoy as he continues to throw insults at us. He finally insulted Lily about her mother, and that's when she unleashed her fury upon Malfoy."
"You said lyrics to 'Weasley is Our King'?" repeated Lorelei Mckinney. "I've never heard this song."
"What verse are you referring to?" asks Samuel Wynter.
Angelina's lip trembles as she bows her head. "I rather not say," said Angelina.
The governors all turn to speak to one another, and Umbridge's face paled significantly as she too heard the song and knew how damaging this would be if brought to light.
Percy showed no signs or reactions to the song, and Harry raised an eyebrow at Percy, wondering how heartless he became over the summer.
"Does anyone on the Gryffindor Quidditch Team have anything to add?" asks Griffin Jones.
No one shook their heads.
"Very well, moving on, we'll begin with the Slytherin Quidditch Team," said Samuel Wynter.
Harry stood up and takes the stand.
"Mr. Potter," said Griffin Jones. Everyone knew who he was, as he was the most famous wizard next to Albus Dumbledore.
"Do you deny the statements of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team?" asks Lorelei McKinney.
"No, it was short, but it was very true," said Harry.
"I understand you know much about the history between Liliana Morris and Draco Malfoy, is that correct?" said Alexander Thompson.
"I do, yes," said Harry.
"Do you deny the statement from the Gryffindor Quidditch Team?" asks Griffin Jones.
"They missed some details, and I understand why they don't wish to repeat said details," said Harry. Everyone looks at Harry uncertain where he was going with this. "but no, I don't disagree with their statement."
"This has to do with the song 'Weasley is Our King'?" said Griffin Jones.
"Afraid so," said Harry. "It was very insulting, and I'm surprised the damage wasn't worse given how disrespectful it was towards the Weasley family."
"The song was created and sung by the House of Slytherin. Did you have anything to do with the song?" asks Lorelei Mckinney.
"I did not," said Harry. "the first time I heard it was during the match. It took me a lot of restraint not to curse my own house for their underhand tactics."
"Can you tell us what the verses of this song entail?" asks Alexander Thompson.
"Weasley is Our King, He cannot save a thing, he cannot block a single ring, that's why Slytherin all sing. Weasley is our king," Harry began repeating the lyrics without singing them. Everyone looked confused about why it was so offensive as it referred to Ron's keeping abilities. "Weasley was born in a bin, he always lets the Quaffle in, Weasley will make sure we win. Weasley is our king."
Upon hearing being born in a bin, they could understand why it was so offensive.
"How did this cause the inferno that was unleashed upon the stadium and upon Mr. Draco Malfoy?" asks Griffin Jones.
"Well, we were dominating," said Harry. "the scored was a 120 to nothing. Granted, the song made Ron Weasley's skills and performance was worse than usual. That was when Lily pulled the miracle and upset by catching the Golden Snitch, giving Gryffindor their first victory over Slytherin in nearly six years. Warrington then attacked Lily with his beater bat deliberately and didn't even bother to stay to face punishment. Lily was getting cheered and celebrated by her teammates minus Ron Weasley, who quickly disappeared into the Gryffindor Locker Room. Draco landed nearby and started mocking Lily about the song that insulted the Weasley's."
They were listening carefully, as this was far more detailed than the Gryffindor statement. Already you could see Umbridge smile disappearing, knowing that if Draco was caught deliberately provoking and starting a fight, then he too would be in serious trouble and would also be held responsible for the destruction upon the pitch.
"Draco commented on how he couldn't find anything to rhyme with 'fat and ugly' for the Weasley's mother. He also had trouble finding something to go with 'worthless and loser' for their father. Upon hearing these words, the Weasley's Twins were restrained by Lily and the Gryffindor Chasers, who wanted to curse Malfoy," Harry said, continuing knowing this was really damaging information.
Percy showed no reaction upon hearing what Draco had called his mother and father. Instead, he does what he always does and sticks his nose high with his chest full of air.
The Board, who heard what Draco was doing and saying, knew without a doubt, he was guilty of provoking the incident. Lucius and Narcissa knew Lily could walk away with a lighter punishment then they wanted.
"How did she cause the inferno?" asks Lorelei Mckinney.
"Draco referred to the Weasley's house being that of pig shit," said Harry. Again, Percy made no reaction. "he then stated that Lily's mother must smell the same way, and that's when she unleashed hell upon him."
"How does that warrant Draco Malfoy being burned alive?" asks Lorelei Mckinney.
"Lily's mother is dead," Harry said simply. "her mother died the same night my parents were murder."
The board looks back and suddenly understand why Draco's comments caused the incident.
"It's a sensitive subject for her, and one she avoids talking about, even with me," said Harry. "the moment Draco said those words, I knew exactly what was going to happen."
The board all look at one another.
"Do you know where she died?" asks Alexander Thompson.
"Godric's Hollow," said Harry.
Now the room was silent. The Board knew why the subject was susceptible. There was a high possibility that Lily's mother had been murder by none of than the Dark Lord Voldemort himself.
"In most cases, this would be warranted for expulsion," said Samuel Wynter. "it's clear that Draco Malfoy provokes the situation and unintentionally caused the incident."
"Does anyone on the Slytherin Quidditch Team have anything else to add or say?" asks Lorelei Mckinney.
"He could be lying," Umbridge suddenly said. Everyone turns to look at her. "Potter is a well-known liar who spins tall tales."
"You are referring to the Daily Prophet's articles over the summer against Harry Potter," said Lorelei Mckinney. "the Boy who Lies I believed the main title was titled."
"Does anyone on the witness stand, deny Harry Potter's statement?" asks Samuel Wynter.
Everyone on the Gryffindor and Slytherin Quidditch Teams shook their heads. Harry's testimony was very accurate and well detailed.
"Does anyone have anything to add," asks Alexander Thompson.
No one stood up or said anything. Not even Percy knowing this wasn't going to end well, and he really wanted to say something to spit in Potter's face again.
"I don't think this is grounds for expulsions," said Griffin Jones. "she was clearly provoked, and Mr. Malfoy is clearly instigator here."
"Even so," said Alexander Thompson. "even if she was provoked, the fact doesn't change that she did react violently and endanger the rest of the students."
"So would you if someone insults your mother," said Lorelei Mckinney.
"Mr. Malfoy is in intense trauma care," said Alexander Thompson. "his burns are so severe its unclear if he'll ever be able to walk again."
"Lily could heal him," Harry said, interrupting the conversation. Everyone turns to look at Harry at what he just said.
"Why would I?" Lily hissed at Harry.
"Mr. Potter, I'm sure you are aware," said Alexander Thompson. "Mr. Draco Malfoy's body is so severely burned he's more like chard crisp. Even the best healers in the region have stated it would be decades before Mr. Malfoy can move again."
"I know, I saw what happen first hand," Harry said. "but I know Lily very well, Governor, and I know this about her. Lily would never break something if she cannot fix what she broke."
The boards look at Harry as does everyone else before they turn to look at each other.
"As Mr. Malfoy is the only one who has been injured," Dumbledore said, speaking for the first time. "If Miss Morris heals Mr. Malfoy, then I think we can agree she will not face expulsion or criminal charges."
"Why would I?!" Lily shouted this time louder. "Malfoy's goes around chucking ingredients in my potions! Jinxing and Hexing me when my back is turned! He causes problems and just won't leave me alone! Why would I heal him when he's nothing but a pariah?"
The board again was silent and realized there was a deep history here.
"Is it possible to say that the subject on her mother only pushed over the edge?" said Samuel Wynter. "did Liliana Morris simply – snap?'
"Many would have snapped if they were constantly harassed with nothing stopping the bullying," said Lorelei Mckinney. "all that anger, frustrations tend to build up, and it's unhealthy. When it's unleashed, it is not pleasant for anyone. Is that why we are here today?"
Umbridge's lip was trembling as she was trying to think hard to salvage the situation and get Lily expelled.
"Countless students have snapped and put their bullies in severe conditions," said Griffin Jones. "they get expelled because the problem is never addressed. It's no excuse, but the Professors are to ensure these things don't happen. I thought that's also why Educational Decree Number Twenty-Five was put in place."
Umbridge's faced falter when everyone was looking at her, and she was at a lost for words.
"The muggles have a saying," said Samuel Wynter. "two wrongs don't make a right. We are at a loss at what we should do."
"I have a suggestion," said Harry. "If Lily heals Malfoy, then they both will serve a month of detention with their respective Head Houses."
Everyone looks at Harry again, as they couldn't register Malfoy being healed enough to serve detention.
"Why would I heal him? I rather get expelled!" Lily said in protest.
Harry walks up and begins to speak in Lily's ear.
"You can demand conditions and favors from the Malfoys," Harry said so no one would hear him. "they would be placed in your debt from ensuring their bloodline doesn't die with Draco."
Lily frowns and nods her head.
"Fine, but I have conditions," said Lily.
"Do you really think you're in a position to bargain?" Umbridge demanded.
"Fine, expel me," said Lily. "and the Malfoy line will end with poor Draco in need of treatment for the rest of his life. Unless pretty boy plans to have more children."
Lucius glared at Lily and knew she was speaking the truth. It would be decades before Draco could even walk, and no one wanted a worthless wizard for a husband. When word reached out about the reason behind this attack, no matter how much he attempted to cover up the facts, this hearing was public record, so it would only look worse upon his name.
"State your terms," Lucius said reluctantly.
"One, Draco is no longer allowed to harass me at all," said Lily. "I'm sick and tired of his juvenile attempts to bully me just because I'm muggle-born."
Lucius grips his cane harder than intended. Muggle haters had a mix reaction within the community of wizards. They were dying. The ideas of the old way were disappearing. If word reached out that he was a muggle hater before the Dark Lord plans came to bear, then everything was in jeopardy.
"We shall speak to Draco," said Narcissa.
"Second, I know you are the ones behind this, and if not, you have the influence to grant this, but the slanders against Harry and Dumbledore in the Daily Prophet or any public record is going to end," Lily said like she meant business.
Cornelius Fudge, Lucius Malfoy, Narcissa, Umbridge, and even Percy all look at Lily in surprised. This was the first time they've ever heard a Gryffindor speak on the defense of a Slytherin.
Cornelius bends down to listen to what Lucius had to say. Cornelius frowns but nods his head.
Harry knew Fudge and his administration wanted to somehow use these turn of events against Harry and Dumbledore.
"Very well," said Fudge. "I shall speak to the Editor of the Daily Prophet."
"Do we have terms?" Harry said towards the board.
The board nods their head, and they all went down to the Healer Wing where Draco was getting treated.
Draco was in a tub residing within the water with Azoth to heal his wounds.
"Professor Dumbledore," said Madam Pomfrey. "what brings you and the board here?"
"We're here to heal young Draco," said Professor Dumbledore.
Lily walks over, and her face was a blank expression. Her hands ignite a blue fire that caused Nacrissa to gasp out in complete and utter shock. The blue flame touches Draco and begins to spread his body as his wounds and burns began to disappear before their very eyes.
Draco groans as he begins to wake up and sits up.
"Where am I?" Draco asks.
Narcissa let out a gasp of air as Lucius tried to hold the fact that he was very much relieved his son was okay.
"Um, Draco," said Daphne. "don't look towards your left."
"Why?" Draco said, looking to his left.
Draco's head snaps back as he holds his nose after he was sure it was broken. Lily had punched him in the face the moment he had turn to look at her.
"You ever mention anything about my mum again," Lily hissed dangerously. "and I'll take some away that will never grow back."
Lily storms out the Healer Wing as Draco holds his nose.
"Why do you keep aggravating her?" Harry asks Draco.
"She's insane, you know that," said Draco.
"Unfortunately, Mr. Malfoy," said Dumbledore. "the moment Madam Pomfrey clears you, you will have a month of detention with Professor Snape for the destruction of the Quidditch Pitch."
"A month?!" Draco shouted in a small voice. "I didn't destroy anything! Morris is crazy! She's the one!"
"The hearing is over, Malfoy," said Snape. "You and Miss Morris both are in trouble in this regard. They know what you did. I shall be speaking to you on your behavior. For now, we shall leave you so your mother and father can spend some time with you."
Everyone turns to walk out as Draco looks upon his mother and father. Both were happy and disappointed.
Harry enters the Room of Requirements to see Lily was standing on a balcony that oversaw the destruction of the Quidditch field. The field looks like a volcano had erupted, leaving the land scared with intense burns. The match between Ravenclaw vs. Hufflepuff had been postponed until further notice.
"How's the school taking the incident?" asks Lily.
Both Harry and Lily had used the secret passage of the Chamber of Secrets to reach the seventh floor unseen.
"Well, you can be sure that everyone is going to be terrified of you," said Harry. "unlike your previous arsenal attacks, this is going to have a deep impact within the student body."
Harry leans against the balcony and talks to Lily and looks at her.
"I didn't mean to lose control," Lily said. "I knew he was going to insult me, but I didn't think he would dirty my mother's memory."
"I'm on your side," said Harry. "had Draco insulted my mother, he would be nothing but snowflakes in the wind. Still, I wouldn't use your elemental abilities anymore. I'm sure some people are going to piece together the fact you conjure powerful fire magic even Dumbledore couldn't dispel is going to raise questions. It doesn't take a genius to figure there is a powerful elemental at Hogwarts. You can bet Voldemort will know soon if he doesn't already know."
"Malfoy deserves what he got," said Lily. "every year, he goes around trying to better me, but it only pisses me off. Snape does nothing to stop his attempts and if anything encourages him."
"Hey, I don't like Snape anymore than you do," Harry said as he looks downwards to see Fudge walking with Umbridge and Percy on the small bridge. Even if they were on a balcony, they were protected by the magic of the Room of Requirement, so they could not be seen or heard. It was clear that Fudge was unable with these turn of events, but he was speaking to Umbridge about making sure Potter didn't get away with his lies.
Umbridge spoke of Lily, saying she was far too dangerous to remain at Hogwarts and should be expelled. She requested more power and authority over Hogwarts. Fudge denied these requests, reminding Umbridge the Governors were stepping in and vetoing his actions and decisions. Already his decision to create the High Inquisitor made the Board very unhappy. He was facing disciplinary hearings on Educational matters that he felt were beneath him. Fudge told Umbridge to keep her head and her ears out for any trouble and report it at once.
Fudge walks off with Percy walking behind, leaving Umbridge standing there. Umbridge said nothing as she turns and walks away.
"I'm surprised Warrington would hit me with the Beater's bat," said Lily.
"Umbridge put him up to it," Harry said as he watches Umbridge retreat back inside the castle. "I don't spend much time in the Slytherin Common Room anymore. Too many eyes are there, so I sleep here mostly."
"It seems we have more enemies than allies," said Lily.
"Perhaps," said Harry. "I'm keeping a close eye on everyone. It's not who you know. It's who you can trust that we're going to be facing in the upcoming months."
"I know you don't trust Ron, but you should give Hermione a break," said Lily.
"I won't," said Harry. "Granger's very strength is her very weakness. She's a damn know-it-all and has made no attempts to at least fit in with her peers. The Daily Prophet Article on her put her in a bad light, but you got to remember, none of it was false. She cares more about academics than she does about her friends. She had a lot of growing to do. Weasley, well, I think we both know Weasley isn't going to grow up at all."
Lily said nothing as she looks down upon pitch and wonders what was happening.
"The holidays are near," said Lily. "what should we do?"
"I'm not staying at Hogwarts," said Harry. "Umbridge is looking for some reason, any reason to breathe down my neck. Truth be told, we don't need to be taking these classes anymore."
"We can't skip class," said Lily.
"Actually, we can," said Harry. "before the start of term, Samuel told me a little loophole in the rules of Hogwarts attendance."
"Oh, do deal," Lily said with a foxy grin.
"You can skip as many classes as you want, but you have to show up for tests," said Harry. "If your test scores are high enough, it won't affect your grade."
"That means we won't have to deal with Snape," said Lily. "my detention is looking much better."
Harry smiles, knowing without classes or homework, she was going to have more free time than initially planned.
"We can do our own self-studies," said Harry. "seeing that's what we're doing, it's not against any rule. One of Hogwarts' principles is self-study."
"I wonder why Hermione never told me about this," Lily mutters. Hermione knew every rule and History of Hogwarts.
"You know full well why Granger never mentioned this rule before," said Harry.
Lily did know. Hermione loved attending class and proving how intelligent she was in front of the teachers and her peers. Some of the teachers tolerated her, but her peers had trouble being near her.
Hermione would never miss an opportunity to attend class, and she disapproval of anyone skipping class.
Harry thanks Merlin for Hermione not being made Prefect. He hopes she would never make Head Girl. She could be worse than Percy!
"We should teach everyone the Switching Spell before December arrives," said Lily.
Harry silently agrees as he walks back inside the Room of Requirements and falls on the bed that appeared. Lily walks over and rests her head on his shoulder as he holds her in his arm. The two drifted off to sleep knowing tomorrow was going to be hectic as countless students, mostly the Slytherin's would be outrage that Lily didn't get expelled. Worse, they would now petrified of being near her knowing hse was able to get away with pure and utter destruction.
A werewolf howl echoes through the night, causing Harry to look out the window towards the full moon. The Forbidden Forest was more active than ever, and it was going to be a war in the forest soon. Harry would need to venture out to see what was going on inside the forest as words of unrest among the creatures spread within the Care of Magical Creatures.
Author Notes: Some of you have voiced about Lily being more powerful in her Elemental Abilities than Harry. Reread the Quidditch Inferno Incident again, and you will notice during Lily outburst, Harry and his friends walked away unscratched. Lily demonstrates her powers more, while Harry keeps his on the down-low. They are equal in strength and are counterbalances to one another. I will explain this later on in Year 5.
