Magical Origins

Author Notes: So, I have a question for my readers. How should Umbridge be dealt with? Should Harry set a trap in the Forbidden Forest? Or humiliate her in front of the students in the Great Hall?

Year 5: Vengeful Sorrows

Albus Dumbledore has been removed as Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Any student or staff in contact with the Headmaster will be removed from the school facing expulsion, termination, and imprisonment in Azkaban.

The notice above is officially Educational Decree Number Twenty-Eight.

The sign had been posted overnight, but it didn't need to be explained that Dumbledore had overpowered the Minister of Magic, and Four Aurors to escape. Everyone in Hogwarts was talking about the incident with countless rumors spreading around. The most common rumor was that Dumbledore had transfigured Fudge's head into a pumpkin, and he was in Saint Mungo's to get his head back on straight.

Everyone had become aware that the only students present during this confrontation was Harry, Lily, and Marietta. Marietta had to be transferred to Saint Mungo's as she had been injured during the skirmish. Harry and Lily refused to say what happened in Dumbledore's office, stating Professor McGonagall asked them not to speak of the matter to anyone else.

Dolores Umbridge sat in Dumbledore's seat at the High Table. She was clearly enjoying her new powers within the school. Umbridge sits proudly, rubbing her porky fingers all over the armrest with a broad sickly smile on her face.

Umbridge, who had students spy on her and report to her throughout her reign as High Inquisitor, now had an official name. The Inquisitorial Squad.

Members of the Inquisitorial Squad had the most power int eh school behind Umbridge herself. They had the right to skip classes. Overrule teacher's decisions, as well as inspect fellow student's mail. Dock points without reasons or cause. The worse was they could not be punished by anyone other than Umbridge herself.

These students were nothing short of bullies who abused their power as Umbridge turn a blind eye to their misdeeds as long as they helped her keep control over the school.

The Daily Prophet ran an article on Dumbledore's 'crimes' and his 'plot' to overthrow the Ministry when Aurors had discovered Ministry documents in his office. Fudge told the Prophet Dumbledore refused to state why he had these documents, then assaulted the Aurors along with himself.

Many didn't believe it, as they felt it was a scheme that Fudge used to set Dumbledore up to finally get him kicked out of Hogwarts.

It was the final straw as Isabelle finally made her move. Isabelle Morgan was the representative of both House Peverell and House Black with her cousin Andromeda Black, called for the immediate impeachment of Cornelius Fudge. Isabelle had brought forth countless evidence against Cornelius Fudge. Fudge was facing charges on Treason, Violations of the Magical Charter of Independence, Sedition, Theft, Espionage, and Perjury.

Fudge tried to scream foul, saying the charge was 'absurd.'

Madam Bones and the Council of Magical Law reviewed Isabelle's evidence, and it was too much to deny. The Impeachment Process had begun.

The Daily Prophet had a full article of Fudge facing an Impeachment. Isabelle Morgan brought force evidence of Fudge accepting bribes from known criminals for 'personal' benefits.

The Council of Magical law had an official open a full criminal investigation on Cornelius Fudge. Fudge, who was locked out of the Council of Law's decision, knew his days were numbered.

After his initial hearing, Fudge hasn't been seen or heard from in the office. Percy Weasley, the Junior Assistant to the Ministry, was seen running around on the Minister's behalf barking orders at all the employees.

In that one instant, where Fudge removed Dumbledore from Hogwarts on the grounds of conspiracy to overthrow the Ministry, he had found himself now facing the removal of office for accepting bribes. Already countless of his political rivals were seeking to become the new Minister of Magic.

Madam Amelia Susan Bones was the lead candidate. She's been in charge of Magical Law for the past five years. Well respected and well-loved by Ministry employees, and the wizarding community.

Rufus Scrimgeour also was running. Now that Fudge's position had weakened, he was taken the chance to run for Ministry. The Head of the Auror Department was leading the investigation against Fudge's crimes. If he could bust Fudge for his bribes, Scrimgeour knew his chances of being the new Minister would improve vastly.

Fudge didn't know what to do, so he did the only thing he could do, locate and capture Albus Dumbledore. Believing that if he brought in Dumbledore and had him prosecuted, he would be a hero who could save his position.

At Hogwarts, everyone was talking about this sudden turn of events. Fudge's days in office look more certain as his appearance in public began to decline. With Fudge's dismal looking to arrive any day now, the students began to openly rebel against Umbridge and her little followers.

Many things happen to the Inquisitorial Squad members that left Umbridge speechless.

Argus Filch found himself unable to leave the toilet at all as he kept crapping diarrhea nonstop. His body was covered in boils that made it impossible for him to handle his Caretaking duties.

Lily and Harry strongly suspected Fred and George were responsible.

Draco Malfoy, the forerunner leader of the Inquisitorial Squad among the students, had a horrifying transfiguration done to his face. It was something that was half bear and half pig. Not a pleasant sight to look at.

Pansy Parkinson had sprouted antlers that made it difficult for her to walk forward.

Montague had vanished, no one had seen where he went, and it caused problems for Umbridge as she had to notify his family of his disappearance.

The worse was someone had let fireworks loose all over the school.

None of the teachers actually cared about the fireworks running rampant. They simply sat back, enjoying as Umbridge suffered through her reign. As she wanted, she had the most say in Hogwarts. For this reason, the Hogwarts teachers called upon her for help in getting rid of the fireworks.

Umbridge spent two weeks running all over the school to answer the calls of the teachers who wanted her to get rid of the fireworks. They did nothing to help her, and the students could tell they were enjoying watching her struggle getting rid of the fireworks.

Filch had told her the Weasley twins were most likely responsible, as they had a knack for mischief. When Umbridge went to confront Fred and George, she managed to corner them the courtyard.

Fred and George had a better trick up their sleeve as they turn the courtyard into a swamp, leaving countless of her Inquisitorial Squad members trapped within the murky swamp.

Umbridge had enough and wanted to make an example of Fred and George. Filch had run faster than anyone at Hogwarts, as seen. He was holding a disciplinary form that would finally allow him to whip Fred and George raw. Umbridge was more than happy knowing the punishment would force the students to submit to her rule without any further trouble.

Fred and George weren't so compliant with Umbridge's wishes. They conjure their belongings and summon their brooms from Umbridge's office. Fred's broom had an iron peg that hits Warrington in the face, causing blood to fly everyone as he lands in the swamp howling in pain. Fred and George hop on their brooms with Umbridge screaming for someone to stop them as Fred and George take off.

Fred's last words at Hogwarts were to Peeves. "Give her hell from us, Peeves!"

Peeves who's never taken orders from any student or teacher bows as Fred and George leave.

Umbridge's fury could be felt by everyone at Hogwarts, but no one cared. Her troubles were far from over.

Fred and George's departure would be left at Hogwarts as a living legend.

Some Inquisitorial Squads attempted to force themselves on Professor Gorloisen. Instead, she cursed them in ways that made others regret even attempting such actions. Umbridge finally had the excuse she wanted to fire Professor Gorloisen and control Defense Against the Dark Arts.

As usual, Umbridge didn't understand that people weren't going to roll over and accept her rule.

Umbridge had to hide as Professor Gorloisen crippled the Aurors Umbridge had brought with her to remove her from the grounds. Umbridge screamed for reinforcements as Professor Gorloisen easily bested the Aurors.

Professor Gorloisen eventually did flee, knowing the students were going to get caught in the crossfire, she disappeared in a whirl of wind knocking the Aurors backward.

Unlike Dumbledore, who was gentler against the Aurors, Professor Gorloisen was vicious. Several Aurors lost their hands and had been nearly crippled for life.

Umbridge was seething knowing Professor Gorloisen would come back to kill her.

Umbridge quickly became the most hated person in Hogwart's history.

Umbridge's little reign had met infinite resistance. There was so much chaos going on; Umbridge had no idea how to handle the situation. The moment she went off to handle one situation, another would quickly arise, demanding her attention. None of the teachers offered her any assistance, and Harry could tell – even Professor McGonagall was enjoying the distribution, which was very rare for her to allow.

After a couple of weeks of pure chaos, Filch – limping with boils and who knows what else Fred and George left him, collected Potter to see Headmistress Umbridge.

"You best corporate if you know what's good for you," said Filch with a nasty smile.

"Want to tell me what she wants?" demanded Harry coldly.

"Mind your manners," snarls Filch. "You filthy little beasts would never have dropped Stinkpellets if you'd known I it in my power to whip you raw, would you now? Nobody would have thought of throwing Fanged Frisbees down the corridors if I could've strung you up by your ankles in my office, would they? I polished my beloved punishment tools extra once Educational Decree Sixty-Six comes in, and she's even asked the Minister to sign an order for the expulsion of Peeves. Oh things, are going to be very different around here with her in charge."

Harry glares at Filch out of the corner of his eyes, knowing that Filch made it known that he hated the students. Filch hatred could only be described as cruel as he and Uncle Vernon would get along great, seeing how they had the very same ideas on their treatment to Harry – if they were legal.

Filch alliance towards Umbridge could prove problematic, as his knowledge of Hogwarts Grounds was perhaps the best there was besides the Weasley Twin's, and Harry and Lily themselves. Harry and Lily have discovered a total of twelve hidden passages out of the castle. They were well hidden and difficult to find. They all knew that Filch only knows about four of the passages.

"Here we are," said Filch happily as he stands before Umbridge's office. He straightens up, trying to look presentable as if he was meeting the Minister of Magic himself. He knocks on the door three times before he opens it and shoves Harry inside. "The Potter boy here to see you, ma'am."

"Thank you, Argus," said Umbridge sweetly.

Harry almost vomited at the false love Umbridge gave to Filch, who smiles kindly upon Umbridge.

Umbridge had been locked out of the Headmaster's office, unable to get in despite her many attempts. Instead, she took the biggest office the school had and made it the 'new' Headmistress Office. Umbridge's office was as vile as Harry imaged. Pink coloring, with cats everywhere.

"Not at all, ma'am, not all," said Filch, bowing as low as his back would permit him to as he takes a couple steps backward before leaving the office.

"Sit," said Umbridge curtly.

"I'll stand," said Harry firmly. He didn't trust anything in Umbridge's office. He was sure she had jinxed or cursed her seats in front of desks should he sit down.

Umbridge's eyes narrow upon Harry before she turns and looks at a profile. Harry could see his academic profile on there as she turns the pages upon his grades and accomplishments.

"Well now," said Umbridge, closing Potter's profile. "What would you like to drink?"

"What?" said Harry in confusion.

"What would you like to drink," Umbridge said in her false sweet voice. "Tea? Coffee? Pumpkin Juice?" Each drink she said, she waves her wand and conjures them on her desk.

Harry could sense a sinister motive in her attempts to have him drink something from her personal storage. Harry didn't trust Umbridge and knew she would no doubt slip something in his drink.

"No, thank you," said Harry.

"I wish you to have a drink with me," said Umbridge in a dangerously sweet voice. "Choose one."

"I brought my own," said Harry as he pulls out his flask and takes a swing of the Pumpkin Juice.

Umbridge looked livid at the fact Potter denied her to drink from her cups.

"Well now, Mr. Potter," said Umbridge in a force-sweet voice. "I think it's about time you and I had a little chat. Especially after the events a few weeks ago in Dumbledore's office."

'Of course,' thought Harry. She wanted to drug him into revealing Dumbledore's location.

"So tell me," said Umbridge smiling. "Where is Albus Dumbledore?"

"Hunting Voldemort," said Harry simply.

Umbridge didn't react, and simply sits there staring at him.

"Mr. Potter," said Umbridge, sitting upright. "let's not play this childish game. I know you know where he has gone. The Ministry knows you know where he has gone. You and Dumbledore have been in this together since the beginning. Consider your position Mr. Potter,"

"I think it is you who needs to consider your position, Dolores," said Harry. "Fudge is under investigation for crimes against the Ministry of Magic and its people. Once he goes down, do you really think you'll be safe once he's out of office? No, you'll be sitting in a cell in Azkaban right next to him."

Umbridge sits there and glares at Potter with unblinking eyes.

"Very well, Potter," said Umbridge. "play your little games. I will take your word for it, for now. Rest assured, the Minister has insurances in place to keep him in office and to prevent Albus Dumbledore from taking over the Ministry. All communications in and out of the school are being monitored. The Floo Network has Regulators watching every fire in Hogwarts – except my own, of course. My Inquisitorial Squad is opening and reading all owl post entering and leaving the castle. Mr. Filch is observing all secret passages in and out of the school. If I find a shred of evidence that you're hiding anything from the Ministry, I'll have you expelled immediately."

Harry stands there, smiling at Umbridge.

"I'll remember that," said Harry warmly. Umbridge faces falters as she realized Harry's face had turn one into a predator. "I want you to as well because when you beg me for any help and mercy, I will show none."

Harry wanted to sleep and get some much-needed rest, but he had Occlumency lessons with Snape that same night, much to his dismay.

Harry's Occlumency training wasn't going too well as he had hope. No matter how hard he trained himself, his mind couldn't block out Snape's influence. Harry even separate himself from Lily for a week in hopes that he would clear his mind from distractions. Harry wasn't sure why he couldn't master Occlumency, but he was sure it was the animosity he felt towards Snape. Snape may never have shown it on his face, but he also loath Harry as much as he did with Harry's father.

Harry knew Snape only believed because he was his father's son, he was born a bad egg from the start, and he wanted to have Harry expelled. Snape has never liked Harry and resents Harry for being in his house.

Snape would once in awhile insult Harry comparing him to his father, deliberately trying to get a rise out of Harry.

Harry never retaliated, but hearing the constant insults towards his father, had caused his resentment towards Snape to grow stronger. It was clear without Dumbledore in the school, Snape no longer keeping his comments to himself.

"Focus Potter," said Snape with a curl. "your lack of focus is pathetic as your father."

"As is your face," Harry snaps back.

Snape's eyebrow raises as he looks at Harry.

This had started to become a common occurrence between the two. Snape would land insults by comparing Harry to his father, and Harry would insult Snape in return.

As this was the first time either had really spoken to one another, the two couldn't hold back their dislike for one another.

Before Snape could comment, the door burst open as Draco Malfoy, with no antlers, appears.

"Sorry to disturbed you, Professor," said Draco before coming to a halt seeing Harry standing alone with their Head of House.

"Don't worry, Draco," said Snape calmly. "Potter has finished up some detention he's been serving."

Draco stood there looking at Harry, not believing that Harry was serving detention.

"What is it?" asked Snape impatiently.

"Yes sir," said Draco turning his attention back to Snape. "It's Montague, sir, he's turned up in the fourth-floor bathroom in the east wing. His head is jammed in a toilet."

"How did he get his head jammed in a toilet?" demanded Snape at once.

"I don't know, sir," Draco admitted in confusion. "he's a bit confused himself."

"Return to the Common Room, Potter, I'll deal with you later," said Snape before he leaves the office.

"Detention?" said Draco looking at Harry with confusion look.

Harry glares back, murderously at Draco, causing him to bolt and run after Snape.

Harry turns to leave when he stops upon a shivering silver light reflecting in the room. Harry turns into the corner and sees a pensive. The same one Dumbledore had when he used it to clear his own thoughts.

Harry was going to turn and leave, but the idea of learning about Snape's past and seeing his own memories. Harry should have left, but his curiosity got the better of him.

Harry enters the pensive and sees he was in the Great Hall with countless students writing down on a piece of parchment. Harry looks around and could see it was the Ordinary Wizarding Level's Exams.

Having been in a pensive before, Harry walks through the students looking around, trying to spot Snape.

Harry paused as he passes a redhead's desk and turns to looks down to see the name on the parchment.

'Lillian J. Evans,'

Harry couldn't stop as he watches his mother write down the answers on her parchment.

Harry wanted to reach down and touch his mother. Whom he knew very little about, as this was perhaps the first time he's ever had any real close interaction with his mother.

Harry could feel his tears dropping from his face as his hand phases through his mother's hands. His mother paused, for a moment, Harry thought she felt his hand, only for her to write down an answer once again.

Harry pulls out his wand and flicks his wand upon his mother's parchment, cast an illusional copy of her work. Harry looks at it as he sits on her desk, looking at her handwriting. It was the first time he's ever seen his mother's handwriting. Harry couldn't hold back his tears upon seeing his mother's handwriting. It was very similar to his own handwriting.

Harry dispels the parchment and quickly walks away, knowing he couldn't hold himself if he remained near his mother any longer.

Harry looks around the Great Hall and could see many students weren't sitting by their houses, but from what Harry assumed, by the surnames. Near his mother, was Sirius who was snickering as he writes down his answers. Harry watches his Godfather and could see how childish he was at fifteen. It was hard to imagine how 'grown-up' Sirius currently appeared.

Harry walks down and nearly missed Peter Pettigrew. He was a scrawny kid, unlike his adult self. He seemed very nervous and unsure of himself as he hastily writes down his answers.

Harry turns and sees his father a couple of rows back behind Pettigrew. His father wrote down on the parchment very quickly. Clearly, he knew the answers to the tests. His father even had a knowing smile on his face as he writes down the answers on the parchment.

Harry quickly spots Snape, younger, healthier, and what Harry could sense, lonely. Snape writing was a lot like Granger's, small, neat, and nearly a foot long. Harry couldn't help but be reminded of Granger when looking at Snape.

"Five more minutes!" a familiar voice called out.

Harry turns to the head table and could see a younger Professor Flitwick.

After five more minutes, the test had come to an end, as Professor Flitwick dismisses the students once he summoned all the parchments to him. It was a funny sight, seeing Professor Flitwick get hit by over thirty parchments that flew at him at once, sending him flying over his stand. Several students in the front quickly got up and helped Professor Flitwick up to his feet.

"Thank you," said Professor Flitwick to each of the students. Harry's mother among them. "You all may go and enjoy the rest of your day until your practical exams. Remember, be here fifteen minutes before the exam time."

The rest of the students go up like a wave as all the tables vanished and quickly headed outside. Happy to get away from the desk and the tests.

Harry follows his father where, Pettigrew, Remus, and Sirius joined him. They all laugh as they talk about the test results.

"How do you think you did on the Werewolf exams?" asked Sirius at once.

"Oh, I'm sure I got full marks," said Lupin with a smile. "One, he's wearing raggy robes. Two, he's sitting in my seat. Three – his name is Remus Lupin."

The others laugh at Lupin's inside joke on his werewolf condition.

They all sit down on the tree overlooking the Black Lake. Some of the girls had taken off their shoes and socks and were kicking the water with their feet. James throws a charming smile at the girls with some giggling and blushing. Others bat their eyelashes at James. Harry watches his mother throws a look of disgust at James before she turns away and chats with her friends.

Lupin sits down and pulls out a book and starts reading. Pettigrew did nothing as he sits down.

Harry knew this was Snape's memory, and he prayed he still in the area so he could see his father and see what type of person he was around others. Harry didn't know what would happen if Snape venture too far from his father.

Fortunately, Snape kept nearby and had sat down on one of the large stones looking over his notes, not looking up or around.

"I'm bored," said James as he leans on the grass. "I wished it were a full moon."

"Well, we might get to have some fun," said Sirius. "Look who's nearby."

James sits upright and follows Sirius's gaze.

"Excellent," breathed James. "Snivellus."

James gets up and starts walking with Sirius in tow. They headed straight towards Snape, who wasn't aware of James and Sirius approaching him. James turns and gives a wave at the girls.

"All right, Snivellus?" said James loudly.

Snape reacted so fast, and it was clear to Harry this has happened before. Many times most likely. Harry was deeply reminded of Draco responding towards Lily before she would burn him into crisp.

"Expelliarmus!" shouted James.

Snape's wand flew out of his wand as Sirius cast his own spell. "Impedimenta!"

The two on one assault clearly caught Snape off guard as he was knocked off his feet before he could even recover to collect his wand.

The students had all stopped what they were doing to watch the encounter. No one came to Snape's aid or said anything.

"How did you do on those exams, Snivelly?" said James mockingly.

"I was watching him," said Sirius loudly. "his nose was smearing his parchment. There will be grease marks all over his tests."

Quite a few students in the crowd actually laugh. Snape clearly was unpopular. Wormtail let out a little sniggered as he heard Sirius's comment.

Snape was trying to get up, but the jinx was still in place.

"Just you wait," said Snape as he tries to break free from Sirius's jinx.

"Wait for what?" said Sirius coolly. "What are you going to do? Wipe your nose on us?"

Snape said several things between swearing and cursing, but nothing had happened with his wand still out of his reach.

"Wash your mouth," said James coldly. "Scourgify!"

Pink foam came out of Snape's mouth, and it was clear that he was choking from James's spell. James did nothing to lift his spell and watch there with a smirk on his face.

"Leave him alone," shouted Lily as she rushes forward. She pulls out her wand and points it at Snape. "Finite!"

"How are you, Lily?" asked James as he wipes his hand through his hair.

"You don't have the right to call me by my first name," hissed Lily. "What did he do to deserve this treatment?"

"Well," said James. "It's more the fact that he exists if you know what I mean."

Some of the students laughed at James' remark. Sirius and Wormtail included. Lily and Lupin did not.

"Leave him alone," said Lily.

"If you agree to go out with me," said James smartly. "Go on, agree to go out with me, and I'll never cast a spell on old Snivelly again."

"Detention Potter," said Lily coldly. "You can spend the rest of the school days cleaning the school without any magic. Anyone else thinks this is funny and wants to spend their summer holidays serving detention at Hogwarts?"

The crowd, which had been laughing and sniggering, had fallen silent. Lily's threat was a dark reminder that she was a Prefect and could force them to stay in the summer in detention.

"Bad Luck, Prongs," said Sirius briskly, before turning to look at Snape. "OY!"

Snape had finally reclaimed his wand and cast a spell at James. Sirius, who saw what Snape was doing, quickly cast a counter-curse as James flicks his wand, causing Snape to be lifted in the air by his ankle.

"You better let him down," hissed Lily.

"Certainly," said James cheerfully.

James wasn't gently on letting Snape down. Snape lands on the ground with a thumb, and he may have dislocated his shoulder upon landing on the grass.

Snape attempts to get his wand, but Sirius pounced on him at once. "Petrificus Totalus!"

"Enough!" shouted Lily in frustration.

Lily had lost her patience, and her wand exploded with several curses that sent James and Sirius on the ground.

"If you ever," snarl Lily upon James and Sirius. "do that again. I'll blast your family jewels into dust, understand."

James and Sirius, along with countless boys, literally became pale at Lily's threat. Some even flinch upon hearing Lily's threat.

"Fine," said James as he stands up with Sirius. "you're lucky Evans was here to save you Snivellus – "

"I don't need saving from a filthy little mudblood!" snarls Snape.

Snape paused as he took what he said and looks at Lily in fear.

Lily didn't say or do anything. She merely blinks as she looks at Snape.

"Fine," said Lily coldly. "then I won't bother in the future. I'd wash your pants if I were you, Snivellus."

"Apologize to Evans!" James roared at Snape with his wand pointed at Snape.

"You are hardly in any position to make others apologize for their actions," Lily said coldly, turning on James. "You're even worse than he is!"

"What?!" yelped James in shock. "I'd never call you a – a you-know-what!"

"If you still don't understand why I don't like you, then you're a lost cause. Your actions are worthy enough to wear the Black Robes and join the Death Eaters!" snaps Lily before she turns heel and marches off.

"Oh! Evans!" shouted James at Lily's retreating back before she disappears. She didn't look back at once.

"What's with her?" said James.

"Reading between the lines," said Sirius. "I'd say she thinks you're going to be a Death Eater."

"Never," protested James in defiance. "Now then." A flick of James wand had Snape back in the air by his ankle. "Who wants to see me take off Snivelly's pants?"

Harry never found out if his father did remove Snape's pants. Harry didn't realize how much time he was in the Pensive because he now found himself staring at his Head of House, looking angry and furious.

"Did you enjoy yourself, Potter?" said Snape with his lip curly.

Harry knew he was in dangerous waters, so he quickly dissolves into mist and leaves Snape standing there in frustration and anger. Harry didn't want to deal with his Head of House, and he was sure the two would never speak to one another ever again.
