Here's a new chapter! Had writer's block for a bit on this one but this story will hopefully continue from here!

Over the next few days, Randall got more used to the castle and the gargoyles, though he still didn't trust the humans very well. Brooklyn, however, was willing to help him learn that they could be trusted well enough.

He was now walking with his red friend along the hallway to the balcony.

"At first, David Xanatos was our enemy and stole our castle. But after a close call of us nearly being discovered by the police, he helped us out and let us live with him again. For you see, we used to hide out in a clock tower above Elisa's police department," Brooklyn said.

Randall's eyes widened. "Really?" He asked. Brooklyn nodded.

"We are trying to get better with the humans now that we're exposed. Plus there's these anti-gargoyle humans, the Quarrymen that wish to get rid of us. I'd watch out for them. But if you're willing and Goliath allows it, you can come on patrol with us."

The lizard monster felt somewhat happy that he met somebody else who knew what it felt like to be misunderstood in the world, though he didn't want to yet tell the clan about his sinful past and almost hurting a small child. Fox still would never, ever let him touch her son. He didn't blame her for hating his guts.

Lexington, the small gargoyle, introduced him to some of the technology he never saw in the Monster world; for this technology didn't use scream energy but electricity and sometimes battery which interested him. Broadway was the cook of the clan, with his mate, Angela sometimes pitching in. His first breakfast and dinner with the clan was delicious. Randall complimented Broadway on the food and had mentioned it was better than digging for scraps. Brooklyn couldn't help but laugh at that joke he did.

He also showed his abilities to the clan. Lex observed how similar to a chameleon Randall was and looked impressed with his invisibility ability.

So far, Brooklyn and Lexington were the two gargoyles Randall got along with the most. And he had to admit most of the castle was quite nice. His favorite spot was the balcony where he could watch the clan turn into stone before going to rest.

That was when Goliath called in the clan to assign patrols. Randall was ready to leave in case he couldn't come but Hudson put a hand on his shoulder.

"Where ye goin, lad?" Randall shrugged. "Nowhere, I guess," he muttered. Hudson smiled.

"Well, Goliath thinks you're ready for a patrol. With your invisibility technique and being a bit more at home here now, ye can help out." The elder offered. Randall felt surprised.

"Oh, that's… great," he stuttered. Hudson laughed. "Don't mention it. Goliath assigned ye with Brooklyn and Lexington to patrol near Lexington Avenue. Good luck."

Randall nodded, gulping. His first test to be a true asset to the clan. He joined his two friends at the balcony.

Brooklyn grinned. "Hope you're ready. I'm glad you can come," he said. Randall's heart fluttered.

"I wish I wasn't so nervous," he muttered shakily. Randall was worried about messing it up like he usually did. Lexington gave him assuring words.

"Just stick near us and if you need to, turn invisible. It gets rough but we do our best to protect this city." Randall then nodded, climbing onto Brooklyn's back and they took off into the night.

Randall still felt a thrill of exhilaration during any take off, smiling from the wind rushing into his face when gliding down into the city. He learned not to hold on too tight during his riding lessons with Brooklyn to help him feel more comfortable in the sky.

So far, there was no trouble to be had around the place, which was good so far for the trio. But then, they heard someone cry out in fear and cruel laughter. Lex and Brook looked at one another and nodded.

"Come on, Randall, let's go help them," Brooklyn said with a grin. Randall gulped but nodded.

They found the source of the trouble; a couple was being assaulted by a gang of masked people Randall now saw who the Quarrymen were. They carried hammers that sparked electricity and cornered the people.

"So you don't want our protection from them monsters?" sneered the leader. The husband shook his head no.

"We don't wish to get involved with more crazy protection groups after Dracon," he said boldly but nervously. The wife agreed.

"Yes, leave us alone!" she snapped. The leader grabbed her arm, pulling her close.

"Bad choice, babe," he snarled, throwing her down. She grunted in pain, her husband kneeling.

"Mercy, please…!" He cried, bracing himself. As the leader was about to pummel the couple, a low growl sounded; revealing Brooklyn, whose eyes were glowing.

"Leave them alone…" he hissed scarily, grabbing the leader and throwing him away. The couple screamed in fear and ran away out of the fight. Randall had decided to stay invisible to observe what his new friends could do, and he was impressed.

Lexington, despite his size, was able to take on two of the Quarrymen, slashing them with his tail then pouncing on one and throwing him into the alley wall.

Brooklyn himself was a natural fighter, eyes aglow when battling the bad humans. Randall saw how scary his face was and thought if he were in Monsters, Inc. he could be on the top Scarer list with Sullivan. He hissed silently at the thought of the walking blue furry idiot, throwing him out of his thoughts.

But then, things went wrong when a dart struck Brooklyn in his arm. He shouted in pain before falling unconscious, a Quarryman readying his hammer to smash his body.

Lexington had a net thrown onto him, sending in electrical surges, knocking him out. Randall's eyes widened in fear and worry while invisible, the Quarrymen laughing in glee from their victory.

The leader called Ben raised his hammer. "This could be more fun to smash them as flesh and blood more than stone. And there's no backup for ya…" he said darkly. Randall felt anger, now deciding they needed his help. He swiftly charged them while invisible, taking Ben's hammer, then knocking him away from Brooklyn.

Ben rubbed his head. "Who hit me?!" He roared. The others were confused, thinking another gargoyle was there and still unaware of Randall's presence. He tripped the Quarrymen and punched several of them until one swung his hammer about, looking around.

"Face me, coward!" He screamed. Randall still wouldn't show, eyes narrowed. But then, Ben had an idea to smoke the attacker out, guessing he was using a way to keep himself unseen. He threw down a smoke bomb. Randall flinched from the smoke getting in his face. He coughed, skin returning to normal, showing himself.

As the smoke cleared, the others were startled at the sight of this new creature. He got into a defense position. The group muttered and observing he wasn't a gargoyle.

"What are you?" Ben demanded. Randall just growled.

"It's not for you to know. You better leave these two alone and scram, or else!" He spat, baring his teeth. Ben narrowed his eyes.

"We'll let you and your freak friends go for now. But be warned this isn't over," Ben snapped hatefully, taking his cronies and running away.

Randall sighed heavily now that his enemies had gone and went to check on his gargoyle friends, still unconscious.

"Lex? Brooklyn? Please wake up, they're gone now!" He pleaded, taking the net off Lexington and shaking Brooklyn.

Brooklyn groaned, opening his eyes and seeing the Quarrymen had left, and Randall not invisible now.

"W-what happened?" He asked. Randall felt awkward.

"Uh, I may have saved you from being smashed up. I couldn't watch it happen," Randall said. Lexington looked grateful.

"Well, you saved us. And we're grateful," he said with a grin. Randall shook his head.

"Don't mention it, really." The lizard muttered. Brooklyn put a hand on his shoulder.

"Goliath would be impressed by your actions today, you know." He said. "But we should probably head back. It's almost sunrise."

Randall nodded and rode back with them to the castle. Brooklyn told Goliath of what happened and the lavender gargoyle gave Randall an approving gaze, smiling at him.

"I thank you for your bravery for facing the Quarrymen and saving our two members," he said to Randall. Randall had no words now, just blushing. Maybe now the clan would include him more for patrols and over time, the humans would see him trustworthy and not just a scary being from the closet.
