Safe

Safe. It was a word that, for her, was both unfamiliar in concept and practice. In all her life she had never once felt completely protected, except for this moment in his arms. She lent into him, her own arms snaking around behind him as his mouth captured hers. She all but sank into him, the warmth of his body being all she could think about. All this was a new experience forher, the feel of someone so close to her when she was so used to being distant. All her barriers had been destroyed by the simple feel of his arms around her shoulders, his breath on her ear, his body close to hers.
Her tears had long since dried, her sadness gone, replaced by the barely controlled happiness she felt now. She had been crying for him, he had been badly beaten, so much that her healing powers were barely enough to fix the many bruises and lacerations that covered his body. Soon after, when their teammates had long been asleep, he had found her, curled in her bed, weeping softly into a pillow. She had cried because he could not, her empathic abilities had drawn that emotion from him and were releasing it. He had gathered her in his arms, holding her close as her emotions poured out, causing the contents of her room to shake. From there, they had progressed to their current position, seated amid the tangled black sheets of her bed.
Both of their defences were down, their uniforms discarded, the unfamiliar feel of civilian clothes present, the last barrier the mask he still wore. Slowly, she broke the kiss and stared into his emotionless, masked eyes. Her hands lifted to his face and softly brushed her fingers across his cheeks to the edge of his mask. It came away in her hands and she smiled as she gazed into he stormy grey of his eyes.
"That's better", she murmured before moving in to kiss him again.
