There is a Light and it Never Goes Out

She never got this nervous around him before. His very presence seemed to make her want to run and hide and bury her head in the sand. The little smiles he gave her lit up her entire day. They penetrated her every defence and made it so hard for her to control all of her emotions around him.

Take me out tonight,

where there's music and there's people,

who are young and alive.

Driving in your car,

I never, never want to go home,

because I haven't got one,

anymore.

Even then, things came so close to shattering around every time he so much as glanced at her, rolled his eyes at one of Robin's 'leader' speeches or did so much as speak to her. So she blocked it all with a shield of sarcasm and rebuttals, by ignoring him and hoping against hope that he somehow broke it all down and managed to get some sense into her.

Take me out tonight,

because I want to see people and I

want to see lights.

Diving in your car,

oh please don't drop me home,

because it's not my home, it's their

home, and I'm welcome no more.

So she sent him glances in return, her thoughts drifting to him whenever she was alone. She slowly dropped her shields, talking to him whenever he wasn't being an ass – literally and figuratively – and sending him ever so subtle hints whenever she could.

And if a double-decker bus,

crashes into us,

to die by your side,

is such a heavenly way to die.

And if a ten ton truck,

kills the both of us,

to die by your side,

well the pleasure and the privilege is mine.

Ever so slowly, he began to understand what was happening, that she may actually be interested in him in return. He became bolder, 'accidentally' brushing against her to see her reactions.

Take me out tonight,

oh, take me anywhere, I don't care.

And in the darkened underpass,

I thought, 'Oh God, my chance has come at last'

(but then a strange fear gripped me and I just couldn't ask)

Amazingly, she responded. She brushed against him as often as she did against him, often distracting him from whatever he was doing, on several occasions totally removing him from a conversation. Eventually, he couldn't take it any longer. When the other Titans had left the tower one evening, he cornered her.

Take me out tonight,

take me anywhere, I don't care.

Just driving in your car,

I never, never want to go home,

because I haven't got one

I haven't got one.

So they talked. Feelings came into the open. Lips touched. Her fingers moved between them, breaking them apart.

"I'm not her." His hand pulled hers away from his lips.

"I wouldn't have it any other way."
