Gzilla54: I'm glad that you're enjoying the story, and don't worry Shawn won't be changing into a beastmen for sometime yet.

Chapter five: The end of normal days part 5

Days passed as Shawn took up Kogi's self defense classes and as the man told the young teen, his lessons weren't easy. Kogi would teach Shawn new fighting techniques, after he was sure that the young teen was ready for the advance moves. Kogi also taught Shawn different skills that didn't relate to fighting. Shawn needed to strengthen his body by lifting heavy weights to develop the muscles within his arms and legs. While also doing long runs to help increase his speed and stamina. Kogi also taught Shawn some skills that were outside of fighting, and to being more adaptable to his surroundings. Shawn was taken into different parts of the city as Kogi had him to do parkour. It was an experience that Shawn had never tried, and it was quite a challenge for him. When he first tried parkour, Shawn winded up getting a few scratches and scrapes. Luckily, he didn't get any serious injuries, so Shawn was able to get through school without anyone knowing about what he was doing. Though he was never able to hide his injuries from his mother, who constantly fussed over him whenever she saw a new scratch on his face, hands or knees. Michiru also showed concern when she saw his injuries, but Shawn would always reassure her that he was fine.

It was also during those days that Shawn had to space out his lessons so that Nazuna wouldn't get suspicious. Shawn didn't want Nazuna to find out that he had been taking defense lessons, otherwise she would question why he was doing it. Michiru also made sure to keep Shawn's training a secret, even though she felt a little ashamed that she was keeping it from her best friend. Yet, Michiru knew that Nazuna would start to question what was going on sooner or later. Shawn also knew this as well, but he hoped that it wouldn't be too soon.

School soon ended for Shawn and Michiru as they started to walk home together. They only got about ten steps when Nazuna suddenly called out to them. Shawn and Michiru turned around to see Nazuna walking up to them, while pushing her bike along beside her.

"Hey Nazuna," greeted both Shawn and Michiru with a smile.

"You guys heading home?" asked Nazuna curiously.

"Yeah," replied Shawn with a shrug. "I'm a little behind on my homework, so I gotta get home before my mom chews me out for getting behind on my studies."

"I see," said Nazuna before she turned to look at Michiru. "What about you Michiru?"

Michiru blinked before taking on a thoughtful expression: "Well...I wasn't really planning on anything today."

"Then would you like to hang out for a bit?" asked Nazuna with a smile.

Michiru smiled and nodded her head: "Sure."

"Alright," said Shawn with a chuckle. "Then I'll be heading back home by myself. You two be careful, okay?"

"Don't worry, we will," replied Nazuna with a smile.

"See you tomorrow," said Michiru as she and Nazuna began to walk off in a different direction.

"Later!" called Shawn as he waved after them.

The girls waved back at him before turning to look down the road they were walking on. Shawn watched them go for a second before he turned and began to head back home on his own.

It wasn't long after that we find Shawn at Kogi's dojo. He was wearing a grey sleeveless shirt and black sweat pants, while his feet were bare of any foot wear. Shawn was doing a few punches and kicks on the boxing pads that Kogi held up in front of him. Kogi would also take a few swipes at Shawn, which the boy dodged without trouble.

"That's it kid! Just like that!" exclaimed Kogi as he encouraged Shawn to hit harder and faster.

Shawn didn't disappoint his teacher as he began to put more force into his punches and kicks. Shawn then let out a yell as he threw his right fist forward, and punched the left boxing pad as hard as he could. The force of Shawn's punch caused Kogi's arm to raise up from the impact before Shawn took a couple of steps back. There was a pause as Shawn panted from the exertion of his exercise before a timer went off.

"Alright, that's it for our lessons for today," said Kogi with a smile. "We'll continue this again tomorrow."

"Y-yes sensei," panted Shawn with a nod of his head.

Shawn then walked off to the side of the training room and sat down with a sigh. Akane was sitting on one of the cushions with a smile as Shawn sat down on another cushion that stood beside her. He let out a sigh before Shawn picked up a dark blue water bottle from the pouch of his black and white gym bag.

"You're getting better, Shawn," said Akane as she watched the young teen take a swig from his water bottle.

"Thanks," said Shawn after he swallowed his water. "Though I have to admit that sensei's training methods are pretty hard."

"Well he likes to push his students beyond their limits. But despite his harsh training, Kogi is actually a kind man that just doesn't want to show his softer side to other people."

Shawn gave Akane a smile and a raised eyebrow: "You talk as if you've been with Kogi your whole life."

Akane gave Shawn a secret smile before she stood up and walked out of the training room. Shawn watched her go with a curious expression upon his face before shrugging. He was about to reach for his towel when his smartphone started to ring. Shawn grabbed his phone and glanced at the caller's phone number, and quickly recognized it to be his home number.

"Huh...I wonder why my mom is calling me?" voiced Shawn in a curious voice.

He then pressed the button to answer his mother's call before raising the phone up to his ear: "Hey mom. Why are you...?"

Shawn paused as he listened to his mother on the other end of the phone. When he did, his eyes slowly started to widen as a look of horror appeared on his face. After that, he quickly packed up his things and ran out of the dojo. But his destination wasn't his house, no it was towards the hospital. Shawn ran as fast as he could towards the hospital with a panicked look upon his face. It took about thirty minutes before he finally came to the hospital and ran into the lobby. Shawn paused to look around before he spotted his mother sitting in one of the lobby chairs, along with Michiru's and Nazuna's parents. Nancy quickly stood up from the chair she was sitting on when she saw her son enter through the lobby door. Shawn quickly ran over to his mother and stopped in front of her, while looking up at her in worry and fear.

"Mom, where are Michiru and Nazuna?" asked Shawn quickly in a panicked voice.

"They're in the ER right now," answered Nancy as she placed her hands on her son's shoulders. "The doctors said that their injuries were serious, but weren't life threatening."

Shawn's felt slight relief at his mother's reassuring words, but his worry for his two friends still clenched at his heart.

"What happened?" questioned Shawn.

Nancy sighed before leading Shawn over to one of the lobby chairs and the two of them sat down in them.

"Michiru and Nazuna got into an accident," said Nancy as she began to explain what had happened to the two girls. "They were walking across the street when a truck suddenly started speeding towards them. The driver of the truck ran the red light, and didn't stop when Nazuna and Michiru were crossing. The police are looking for the driver, but so far they haven't found them yet."

Shawn turned his gaze downwards to glare at the lobby floor as anger blazed inside of him. He then took in a calming breath before he looked up at his mother again.

"Are Michiru and Nazuna going to be alright?" asked Shawn in a soft yet tight voice.

Nancy hesitated on answering her son's question, but soon let out a sad sigh before speaking to him in a gentle voice.

"The doctors told us that they weren't sure. They said that Nazuna and Michiru had lost a lot of blood during the accident and will need a blood transfusion. Other than that..."

Nancy paused as she was unable to speak the last words that her son needed to hear. Shawn sadly stared at his mother as understanding came over his face. He didn't need to hear what his mother was going to say next. Shawn knew that only time will tell if Michiru and Nazuna can pull through this tragic event. He gritted his teeth in anger and frustration for he hated feeling helpless when it came to not saving anyone. It was just like how he wasn't able to save Roxie from being stabbed by Blake. Shawn brought his mother into a hug as the two of them held each other tightly in comfort. As he hugged his mother a single tear appeared in the corner of his right eye before it rolled down his cheek. The thought of losing his two friends made Shawn's stomach clench, and he could swear that he felt his heart breaking within his chest.

'Please...' thought Shawn as he quietly prayed to himself. 'Please don't you and Nazuna die Michiru. I can't bear to lose either of you. You're the only friends that I have left in this world.'

It wasn't long before night fell and Shawn, Nancy and the parents of Michiru and Nazuna had to leave the hospital. Shawn slowly followed behind his mother as they headed towards their car within the parking lot. They were almost there when Shawn stopped dead in his tracks and frowned slightly in confusion. For some reason, he felt like he was being watched. He began to look around the parking lot for a moment before the feeling of being watched had disappeared.

'That's weird,' thought Shawn with a frown. 'I was sure that I felt someone watching me a moment ago.'

He then shrugged it off and continued on his way towards the car. Yet if the young teen had looked up he would have seen a figure standing on the roof top of the hospital. The figure was hidden within the shadows of the night and only the light of the moon outlined its figure. Yet the head of the figure wasn't outlined like that of a human, instead it was in the shape of a wolf's head. The figure watched as Shawn and his mother got into their car and drove away. After watching the car drive away from the hospital, the figure turned and disappeared into the night.

The next day, we find Shawn sitting on a bench in the park. His face held a blank expression as he stared down at the ground in front of him. Luckily it was Saturday, so that gave Shawn some time to be by himself for a while. He and his mother were still awaiting to hear from either Nazuna's or Michiru's parents about what condition the two girls were in. So far, there hadn't been any calls from either of the families. A low growl rose up from within the back of Shawn's throat as he clenched his hands into a tight fists. He felt frustrated about the whole situation and was helpless to do anything about it.

'If only I had been there,' thought Shawn quietly to himself. 'Then maybe I could have...'

Shawn's thoughts were interrupted when a familiar voice suddenly spoke up in front of him.

"Well this is a surprise. Never thought I'd find you back here again."

Shawn looked up and saw Kogi standing in front of him with a serious expression upon his face.

"Sensei," said Shawn in surprise as he stared up at the older adult.

Kogi took a seat down on the bench beside Shawn and let out a sigh. Shawn stared at his teacher for a moment before he looked down at the ground again. The two sat in silence for a while before Kogi was the first one to speak.

"You missed out on your lessons today."

Shawn sadly frowned before he spoke: "Sorry...I just have a lot on my mind right now."

Kogi glanced over at Shawn for a moment before speaking: "I'm guessing you're still a little shaken up about what happened to your two friends huh?"

Shawn blinked and quickly looked up at Kogi in surprise. How did his teacher know about Michiru's and Nazuna's accident?

"I called your mother to see why you didn't show up for my class today," answered Kogi as he stared straight into Shawn's eyes. "She told me about what had happened to Michiru and Nazuna. She also told me that you went off to be by yourself for a while. I just happened to be walking about when I noticed you sitting here on this bench a moment ago."

"Oh," said Shawn as he turned his attention to the ground again. "That makes sense."

Kogi stared at Shawn for a moment before speaking: "How are you holding up kid?"

Shawn didn't answer right away, but when he did it was in a voice that held a lot of anger and sadness in it.

"To be honest...not so good sensei. I keep think about how Michiru and Nazuna had almost been killed by that truck driver. If I had known, then I would have been able to save them."

"Or you could have also winded being sent to the hospital as well," added Kogi as he gave Shawn a serious look.

"Maybe," voiced Shawn in a low voice before he turned to glance up at Kogi. "But still..."

"Shawn," interrupted Kogi in a voice that held no room for argument. "What happened, happened and there's nothing we can do to change the past. All we can do is continue forward and hopefully find a better future for ourselves."

Shawn stared at his teacher for a moment before gently biting his bottom lip for a moment. He then spoke again, but it was in a voice that was filled with doubt and fear.

"But what if you can't move forward?"

"That will be up for you to decide," said Kogi as he turned his gaze towards the sky. "But if your friend Michiru were here, she would have told you to stop feeling sorry for yourself and continue on with what you're doing right now."

Shawn frowned as he glanced down at the ground again. The two once again sat in silence for a while before Kogi spoke once again.

"You know, I held a lot of fears and doubts back when I was around your age. I wasn't sure if I could live up to the teachings my own sensei taught me, and kept thinking that I would eventually mess everything up. But then my teacher said these words that helped me get through my everyday life. He told me: Fear is a reaction. Courage is a choice. It was those words that encouraged me to move forward and find a future that I could call my own. Thus I became a teacher and dedicated my life into training those who aren't able to defend themselves from people who seek to hurt them."

Shawn stared up at Kogi in surprise, both on his encouraging words and the saying that he had just spoken. Long ago, Shawn's father had told him the exact same quote when he had been very young. Fred had always been inspired by Winston Churchill's quote about how fear is something that all beings react to, and how it takes courage to face those fears. It was that quote that Shawn always held close to his heart, but had almost forgotten it until Kogi said those words. Shawn held a thoughtful expression upon his face before smiling.

"Thanks sensei," said Shawn as Kogi looked back at him again. "I needed to hear those words."

Kogi gave Shawn a smile before he stood up from the bench: "Good, then I expect to see you in my class again tomorrow. So be ready to train extra hard, you go it?"

Shawn smiled before he nodded his head: "Yes sensei."

Kogi nodded back before he turned and walked out of the park. Shawn watched him go before his smartphone started to ring. He quickly pulled it out of his right pocket and saw that it was his mother calling him. He quickly pressed the button to answer before holding the phone up to his ear.

"Hey mom, what's up?" asked Shawn.

He silently listened for a moment before his eyes widened slightly. Yet they did not widen in horror, instead they had widened in shock with relief also shining within their depths.

We soon find Shawn running down the street towards the hospital with a look of deep concentration on his face. It didn't take long for him to reach the hospital before entering the lobby. He headed towards the front desk, where a woman sat behind the counter. Shawn quickly came to a stop in front of the desk and spoke to the woman.

"Which room are Michiru and Nazuna stationed in?" asked Shawn in a hurried voice.

The woman looked up at him in surprise, before telling him which room his two friends were in and what floor they were on. He thanked her before heading towards the elevator and took it up to the third floor. Shawn tapped his foot impatiently as he rode the elevator up before it finally stopped at his destination. He didn't waste any time in running down the hallway as he headed towards the room his two friends were occupying. It didn't take long for Shawn to find the room as he came to a sliding halt. He panted as he stared at the door in front of him for a moment before he opened it to reveal Michiru and Nazuna. They were both resting in their hospital beds with Nazuna sleeping peacefully. As for Michiru, she was wide awake and sitting in a reclining position.

Shawn noticed that Michiru's right leg was in a cast and that her head was bandaged. She was gazing out the window with a bored expression upon her face, but turned when she heard the door opening. A large smile appeared on Michiru's face when she saw Shawn standing within the door way.

"Hey Shawn," said Michiru in a joking voice. "What took you so long?"

Shawn stared at Michiru for a moment before a smile appeared on his face. He then quickly walked towards Michiru and gave her a firm, but gentle hug as tears began to leak from his eyes.

"You idiot," spoke Shawn in a shaky voice. "That's supposed to be my line."

Michiru hugged Shawn back, while running her right hand up and down his back to sooth him. The two continued to hold onto each other before Shawn whispered quietly into Michiru's ear.

"I thought I was going to lose you."

Michiru buried her face into Shawn's neck as tears began to appear in the corners of her eyes: "I'm sorry for scaring you, Shawn. But it's alright now, me and Nazuna are still alive."

Shawn pulled back and wiped a tear away from Michiru's face: "I know and I'm glad that you two are alright now."

Michiru smiled at him before a voice spoke up from the bed across from them: "Hey Shawn, when did you get here?"

Shawn and Michiru turned to see that Nazuna was awake and had a smile on her face. Shawn noticed that Nazuna's right lower arm and wrist were in a cast, while a square bandage sat taped onto Nazuna's right cheek. Shawn smiled at his friend before walking over to Nazuna's bed and placed a gentle hand on her cast arm.

"I just got here a moment ago," answered Shawn in a soft voice. "I'm glad that both of you are going to make a full recovery."

"Yeah," said Nazuna in agreement. "Though the doctors did say that it was a touch and go for us."

Shawn only smiled down at her before Michiru spoke up: "Don't worry Shawn, we're not going anywhere anytime soon."

"I know," said Shawn as he walked over to Michiru's bed and sat down on the edge of it. "And hopefully this will be the only time that you two will have a brush with danger."

"No promises," joked Michiru with a smile.

Shawn only chuckled before gently grasping Michiru's left hand with his own. Nazuna watched the scene between the two and quietly chuckled to herself.

'Honestly, those two are completely hopeless,' thought Nazuna.

After that, Shawn stayed at the hospital for a while as he talked with Michiru and Nazuna. As he did, a calmness washed over him and Shawn felt like everything was going to be alright.
