A Quiet Fire
Disclaimer: I don't own anything except the idea of the story.
Tranquility. Something that exists in the mansion in the dead of night, and only then. The curtain of silence is broken when Bobby Drake shoots up in his bed from a disturbing nightmare, as if he was thrown out of the dream world and back into the real world. This disturbance does not affect John Allerdyce who's mind resides in a peaceful zone.
Bobby stares at John; he's motionless except for the rise and fall of his chest. This isn't a side of John that Bobby sees very often, only during the nights when he abruptly wakes up from dreams involving him being trapped in a burning building. Bobby laughs silently at the irony. He focuses on the sound of John's breathing as air easily flows in and out of his lungs. Bobby finds it very relaxing, almost as relaxing as watching John sleep.
Only one more thing could make this moment perfect. He only wanted to touch John, trace his hands over his soft, warm skin, show him how much he really did care for him in a physical way. He didn't feel like the boyish way of showing affection through name-calling and shoving got the point across, but he did enjoy the physical contact. But he knows he can't have that.
He will never have that one perfect moment. It was against the rules. Not the rules of the mansion, but the rules of life, and nature, at least according to most people. He didn't like the fact that he's letting other people control how he lives his life, but even he knew that he was one to follow the rules. Fire and ice can't be together, and neither can a boy and a boy.. neither can Bobby and John.
Maybe someday they can make it work. For now, staring at John while he slept under the pale blue moonlight, with him looking so cute and innocent, was enough for Bobby. That alone makes everything worthwhile. Bobby turns in bed and tries to go back to sleep, to go back to that nightmare of him being trapped in a burning building.
But he won't mind it, so long as John was the one who made the building burn.
