Hero

He tore away his suit, revealing that sun shining bright on his chest, flying into the fire. He couldn't help but look for her. His heart pumped with outrageous speed and he could barely stand. The smoke entered into his lungs and he could only think of the worst. What if he died here, right now? What would happen?
These questions got pushed further and further back into his head. Only one thing, one person mattered. He tumbled into the doorway, smashing his hand on burned concrete, the block etched into his hand, drawing blood. It stained the rock and he got up with some hesitation. The earlier questions only continued to burn into his mind. What if she was already . . . No.
He only fought the flames harder, the stairs stronger, and he came to a closed door. The roaring flames could only muffle the sounds coming from inside only slightly, but he could hear her screaming. The mental images of her getting ingulfed in the fire could only make him stronger, he had to try. No turning back.
"HOLD ON," he screamed at the top of his lungs. Placing his shoulder in front of him, he hurled himself at the door, putting all of his strength into the blow. The door collapsed onto the floor along with him. And there she was, lying on the floor, holding her hands to her mouth to block the smoke from gaining entry into her system.
He helped her off of the ground, keeping her close to them. They were almost out, and if anything happened to them now, this would've been all for nothing. Spoke to soon.
The floor was already weak from the fire, and it couldn't hold the weight much more. It collapsed, exposing the bottom first floor, a good ten foot drop down. It fell underneath them, and he could only grab her arm with one hand, the edge with another.
There they were, dangling off the side. He knew that she could make it down easily, and that was all that mattered.
"Let go."
"I can't."
"You have to do it, you have to let go, it'll be alright."
She gave him a look of longing and wanting, they loved each other, but now it was about survival. She closed her eyes, trusting him with all of his heart, and let go. One second later, her feet connected with the bottom floor, the door only 5 feet away from her.
Then, a loud creaking noise came from above him, the floor above was about to give way. It wasn't in vain, it worked, she would be safe. Nothing else mattered.
"Get out of here, now!"
She stood, unwavering, and unmoving. She wasn't leaving without him, nowhere without him.
"I'll see you again, now get out of here."
"I love you."
"And that's why you have to go."
The tears were now flowing from her face, and she ran out the door, knowing that his sacrifice wasn't in vain. And, almost in response to her leaving the building, the floor gave way. A loud booming, crushing, sound came from inside the building. He had done it, he saved her.
The next day, she awoke from the hospital bed, glancing over at the table sitting next to her. On it was sitting a small black box. She opened it, curious as to the contents and mystery which it contained. Inside, there was a golden band with a red ruby shining forth from it. A card came attached, and it said only a few words.
You'll see me again.
Love,
Your Hero.
She cried, and kissed the ring.
