The next morning, Devon, O'Connell, Evie, Jonathan and the Warden, Gad Hassan were now at a Bedouin trading post, trying to get their own rides now that the other group of explorers had all the horses and camels after the ambush from the Medjai. Jonathan was with Devon, and O'Connell as he barters with a camel trader, who argues with him in Arabic.
"Five. I only want five. Five. Not a whole bloody herd." Jonathan argues
Jonathan turns to Devon and O'Connell as they stood with their arms crossed.
"Can you believe the cheek?" Jonathan says
"Will you just pay the man?" O'Connell says impatiently
"Oh, for heavens sake!" Jonathan says
Jonathan forks over some money and the trader hands them the reins of five camels. Devon took one camel while O'Connell and Jonathan both took two.
"I can't believe the price of these fleabags." Jonathan says
"We coulda had 'em for free, all we had to do was give 'em your sister." O'Connell says
"Yes, awfully tempting, wasn't it?" Jonathan says
The trio look up as Evy steps out of a trading tent wearing a gorgeous, tightly fitted, Bedouin dress.
"Awfully." O'Connell says breath-taken by Evy's appearance
Evy smiled as she saw O'Connell's stunned expression. Even Devon was impressed by the way she looked now.
Devon, O'Connell, Evy, Jonathan and Gad were now on their camels, journeying forth into the endless, sunbaked Sahara desert. The orange sun glowed in the sky as it hovered over the desert, giving it a sense of majesty.
"Never did like camels. Filthy buggers. They smell, they bite, they spit. Disgusting." Jonathan says
"I think they're adorable." Evy says petting her camel's head
The warden sings in Arabic as they journeyed across the sand dunes.
The group travels the Sahara for days, enduring through the heat and braving through sand storms. The vast desert seemed to stretch on for miles without end. Many suns rose and fell as the moon took it's place during their journey.
One night, the moon shines down on the group as they trek across the vast desert. Unknown to them, Ardeth Bey and the Medjai watched them on top of a distant ridge.
Evy was sound asleep while O'Connell watched her. Her head slid onto O'Connell's shoulder, but he gently pushes her back up. Jonathan was trying to sleep, but Gad was snoring rather loudly. O'Connell looks up toward the distant ridge and saw Ardeth Bey and the Medjai looking down at them. Devon saw them too as he followed O'Connell's gaze toward the ridge. As he looked down at them, Ardeth kept a watchful eye on O'Connell, impressed by his strong will.
"Hadha wahid qawiun. (This one is strong.)" Ardeth says in Arabic
The dawning sun hasn't yet crested the distant horizon. Devon, O'Connell, Evy, Jonathan and Gad Hassan stop at a giant sand dune. The American expedition rides out from behind the far end of the dune, accompanied by dozens of native diggers. Beni leads on riding a camel while the rest rode on horses.
"Good morning, my friend." Beni says
The two parties come to a stop only a few feet apart. They all stare out into the endless horizon.
"What the hell are we doin'?" Daniels asks
"Patience, my good barat'm. Patience." Beni says
"Remember our bet, O'Connell. First one to the city. Five hundred cash bucks." Henderson says
"A hundred of them bucks is yours if you help us win the bet." Daniels says looking over at Beni
"Oh, my pleasure." Beni says
Beni looks toward O'Connell and his party.
"Hey, O'Connell. Nice camel." Beni says
O'Connell says nothing and just simply pets his camel.
"Get ready for it." O'Connell says
"For what?" Evy asks
"We're about to be shown the way." O'Connell says
In the horizon, the yellow-orange sun slowly rises up to welcome the new day. As it does, a huge shape begins to form. Everyone watches as the shape begins to form. At first, it appeared to be a mirage, but it soon became more clearer to see. Both groups could not believe what they were seeing.
"Would you look at that." Henderson says
"Can you believe it?" Daniels says
"Hamunaptra." Burns says smiling
"Here we go again." O'Connell says
"So, that's Hamunaptra." Devon says
When the sun fully rose in the sky, Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead had formed on the huge sand dune. Their destination was now in sight.
Within moments, both parties began racing toward Hamunaptra. Devon and his group managed to get a head start on the American expedition with O'Connell in the lead.
Beni catches up with O'Connell and the two were neck-and-neck with each other. Beni takes his camel whip and starts whipping O'Connell, trying to knock him off his camel. The Hungarian hits him five times before O'Connell grabs Beni by his shirt.
"So long, Beni!" O'Connell says
O'Connell jerks Beni off his camel while he screams. Beni slams to the ground and tumbles as Devon and Evy ride past him.
"And that serves you right." Evy says
"See you there!" Devon says with a two-fingered salute
Devon, O'Connell, and Evy were now far ahead of everyone else. Evy had never felt so alive. Her hair flies in the wind as she rides alongside the Keyblade Wielder and the adventurer. O'Connell looks toward Evy with a grin. He was already starting to like her. Evy looks back at him also grinning. She moves up ahead of Devon and O'Connell, her camel moving faster across the sand dune.
"Whoo!" Evy says
"Whoo-hoo! Go, Evy! Go!" Jonathan says
Evy beats Devon and O'Connell to the stone ramp. The three of them had won the race.
Having arrived at Hamunaptra, both parties began their archeological digs. The American expedition goes to work on their excavation with the diggers hauling rocks and dirt out of the temple doorway under the guidance of Allen Chamberlain as he speaks to them in Arabic.
Henderson looks toward another part of the ruins and saw Devon and his party across from them.
"Do they know something we don't?" Henderson asks
Allen, who was standing under his handheld umbrella turns and watches the group.
"They're led by a woman. What does a woman know?" Allen says
If only Allen knew, because Devon, O'Connell, Evy, Jonathan and Gad Hassan were near the Statue of Anubis working next to a narrow crevice, which weaves it's way through the ruins. O'Connell ties a rope around a pillar and throws the rest of the coils into the crevice.
"That's the Statue of Anubis, the Egyptian God of Death. It's legs go deep underground. According to Bembridge Scholars, that's where we'll find the secret compartment, containing the golden Book Of Amun-Ra." Evy says
Evy looks over to her left and saw Jonathan examining a large ancient rusty mirror.
"Jonathan, you're meant to catch the sun with that." Evy says
O'Connell and Devon walk up to Evy, also interested in the purpose of the mirrors.
"So, what are these old mirrors for?" O'Connell asks
"Ancient mirrors. It's an ancient Egyptian trick. You'll see." Evy says
"Here, this is for you." O'Connell says
O'Connell hands Evy a sack.
"Go ahead. It's something I borrowed off our American brethren. I thought you might like it, you might need it for when you're... uh... uh... Yeah." O'Connell says
O'Connell notices that Gad was staring at him.
"What are you looking at?" O'Connell says
The warden said nothing and just put his hands up. Evy opens up the sack and saw that it had several tools inside. She then looks toward O'Connell as he and Devon prepared to rappel into the crevice. Devon saw Evy looking toward them and waved at her with a two-fingered salute.
"Hey, look for bugs. I hate bugs." Gad says
O'Connell rappels down into the crevice first, then Devon goes next.
The group descends down into a dark, underground chamber. Devon and O'Connell both held a torch in their hands, giving them some light.
"Do you realize we are standing inside a room that no one has entered in over three thousand years?" Evy says
"I sure didn't. But why don't we shed some light in here." Devon says
"Whoo! What is that god-awful stench?" Jonathan asks as he let go of the rope and shaking his hands from the rope burn
Jonathan sniffs the air and looks back up, realizing that the smell was coming from Gad Hassan as he climbs down the rope.
"Oh." Jonathan says
Evy brushes cobwebs away from an ancient mirror on the wall with her left-hand and repositions it on it's pedestal, tilting it upward and aiming it at a ray of light shining in from the outer mirrors.
"And then there was... light." Evy says
The light hits the mirror and quickly shoots around the room from one mirror to another, illuminating the room. It was an Embalmer's Chamber.
"Hey. That is a neat trick." O'Connell says
"Yeah." Devon says
"Oh, my god. It's a Sah-netjer!" Evy says
"Sah-what?" Devon says confused by the word
"A preparation room." Evy says
"Preparation for what?" O'Connell asks
"For entering the afterlife." Evy says in a pretend spooky voice
O'Connell draws a revolver from his holster and holds it in his left-hand while still holding onto his torch.
"Mummies, my good son. This is where they made the mummies." Jonathan says
"I'd guarantee some nasty grizzly stuff happened in here." Devon says
The party make their way through a dark narrow passageway, exploring more of the underground chamber. Suddenly, they hear a loud skittering noise travel through the air. They look up and whirl around following the sound before everything falls silent again.
"What was that?" Jonathan asks
"Sounds like... bugs." O'Connell says
"And a large number of bugs at that." Devon says
"He said 'bugs'." Evy says
"What do you mean bugs? I hate bugs!" Gad says
Eventually, the group moves out of the tunnel and enter a large chamber where they saw the legs of the large Anubis statue.
"The legs of Anubis. The secret compartment should be hidden somewhere inside here." Evy says
Suddenly, the group hears a strange moaning noise inside the chamber, which made them all turn around. The group leans against the platform of the statue as they take cover. O'Connell readies his pistol in his left-hand. He hands his torch over to Evy and draws a second pistol in his other hand. Jonathan and Gad Hassan took out their pistols. The moaning sound grew closer and closer and they moved closer and closer to the edge.
They soon leap out and came face-to-face with the Americans, who also had their guns up, cocked, loaded, and aimed right at them along with Beni, the Egyptologist and the native diggers. Everyone sighed with relief.
"You scared the bejesus out of us, O'Connell." Henderson says
"Likewise." O'Connell says
They lower their guns.
"Hey, that's my tool kit." Burns says noticing Evy had his sack of tools
"No, I don't think so." O'Connell says
They raise their guns back up.
"Okay. Perhaps I was mistaken." Burns says
The two parties lower their guns again.
"Well, have a nice day, gentlemen. We have a lot of work to be getting along with." Evy says
"Push off! This is our dig site." Allen says
"We got here first." Evy says
"Way before you did that's for sure." Devon says
Again, they raise their guns.
"This here is our statue, friend." Daniels says
"I don't see your name written on it, pal." O'Connell says
As the others were talking, Evy notices on the ground there were small linear holes on the ground at the bottom of the platform.
"Yes, well. Since there are five of you and 15 of me, your odds are not so great, O'Connell." Beni says
O'Connell aims the gun in his right-hand towards Beni.
"I've had worse." O'Connell says
"Yeah, me too." Jonathan says
O'Connell and Devon look toward Jonathan with dumbfounded expressions. Evy then steps in to the center of the group, having had enough of this arguing.
"Oh, for goodness sake. Let's be nice, children. If we're going to play together, we must learn to share." Evy says
Evy looks toward O'Connell.
"There are other places to dig." Evy says
Evy then looks toward Devon and nods. Devon looks down to the ground and notices the linear holes. He looks back up at Evy and nods. They soon lower their guns.
Devon, O'Connell and Jonathan were in another chamber down below the Statue of Anubis digging through the ceiling using sledgehammers and pickaxes while Evy was gently chipping away with a tiny chisel.
"According to these hieroglyphics, we're underneath the statue. We should come up right between his legs." Evy says
"When those damn Yanks go to sleep... No offense." Jonathan says
"None taken." Devon and O'Connell say in unison
"We'll dig our way up and steal that book right out from under them." Jonathan says
"And you're sure we can find this secret compartment?" O'Connell asks
"Oh, yes, if those beastly Americans haven't beaten us to it. No offense. " Evy says
"None taken." Devon and O'Connell say in unison
"Then, let's get down right to it." Devon says
Jonathan looks around and notices that the warden wasn't with them.
"Where'd our smelly little friend get off to?" Jonathan asks
Gad Hassan crawls into a dark chamber with a torch in his hand. He soon come across a mural wall with dozens of blue scarab jewels embedded into the wall.
"What have we here?" Gad says
Gad drives his torch into the ground near the wall, then inspects the scarabs. He blows off the sand and rubs his index and middle-finger along one of the jewels.
"Blue gold. This will fetch a pretty fine price." Gad says
The warden pulls out a pocket knife and pried out the scarab and places it in his satchel. He chuckles and ululates happily as he continues prying out more scarab jewels
In the Anubis Chamber, the American party had found the secret compartment and were eager to see what treasures awaited them inside. Henderson steps forward with a crowbar in his hands.
"Let's get us some treasure!" Henderson says
Henderson drives his crowbar into the seams of the statue's platform, but the Egyptologist, Allen Chamberlain immediately grabbed the crowbar, stopping him.
"Careful! Seti was no fool. I think perhaps we should let the diggers open it." Allen says
The Americans and the Egyptologist look toward the native diggers.
"Oh, I think we should listen to the good doctor, Henderson." Burns says
The cowboy removes his crowbar from the platform and takes a step back.
"Yeah. Sure. Let them open it." Henderson says
Allen Chamberlain nods in agreement and gestures to the diggers to come over, waving his right-hand and speaking in Arabic.
"Efta! Efta!" Allen says in Arabic
Three Diggers hesitantly step forward with crowbars and stick them into the seams of the platform.
"Stechlo de nalo." Allen says
The diggers pull on the seams while Henderson, Daniels, Burns, Beni, and Allen watch with anticipation.
"Zeaida!" Allen says in Arabic
The diggers pull harder.
"Zeaida!" Allen says in Arabic
The diggers pull even harder.
"Zeaida!" Allen says in Arabic
Suddenly, an intense burst of liquid sprays out of the seams and hits the three diggers. Their skin was melted clear off. They scream as they die horribly. By the time they hit the floor, the diggers were half-skeletal. The party were all horrified by the sight. Daniels and Burns jump back and hold each other as they scream while Beni stood shaking with fear.
Back in chamber under the Anubis statue, Jonathan was using his sledgehammer like a golf club, hitting rocks across the room while Devon, Evy, and O'Connell sat on some stone blocks.
"So, lemme get this straight, they ripped out your guts and they stuffed them in jars?" O'Connell asks
"And they take out your heart as well. Oh, and do you know how they take out your brains?" Evy says
"Evy, I don't think we need to know this." Jonathan says
"They take a sharp red-hot poker, stick it up your nose, scramble things about a bit, and then rip it out through your nostrils." Evy says
Devon and O'Connell both paled at the thought and they held their noses with their right-hands.
"Ooh. That's got to hurt." O'Connell says
"I'll say. Wouldn't want that to happen to me." Devon says
"It's called Mummification. You'll be dead when they do this." Evy says
"For the record, if I don't make it out of here, don't put me down for Mummification." O'Connell says
"Likewise." Jonathan says
Jonathan takes another swing and for some odd reason, the force from it causes a huge chunk of the ceiling to give way. A massive stone sarcophagus drops out of the ceiling and lands on the sandy floor in a cloud of dust. Jonathan slowly turns around with embarrassment. The dust clears and Devon, O'Connell, and Evy slowly move up to the sarcophagus.
"Oh, my God. It's a... It's a sarcophagus." Evy says
They look up and saw that the sarcophagus had fallen several feet up above them.
"Buried at the... base of Anubis." Evy says
"Why was this sarcophagus buried at the base of the statue?" Devon asks
"He must've been someone of great importance. Or he did something very naughty." Evy says
Everyone looks at the sarcophagus with weary expressions.
Back in the scarab chamber, Gad Hassan was still picking Scarab jewels off the wall.
"Oh, Allah." Gad says
He takes one in his hand and goes to put it in his satchel, but he misses and accidentally drops it to the ground. He doesn't take notice and continues picking scarab jewels off the wall. Something inside the jewel starts to wiggle as if the jewel were some sort of strange cocoon. It splits open and a real live hideous scarab scurries out, letting out a squeal.
"One more. Heh, heh." Gad chuckles
The warden was too consumed by his greed to notice the scarab on the ground and he continued to pry the jewels off the wall.
The bug emerges from it's cocoon and crawls over to the warden's right-shoe and quickly burrows in through the leather, vanishing inside. It was then that Gad Hassan finally takes notice. He starts feeling pain in his foot and looks down. Gad screams, drops his knife, and frantically claws away at his leg.
"Ahh! Help me! Help me! Help me!" Gad screams
The warden claws higher and higher up his leg until he rips open his shirt, revealing a large, hideous lump burrowing underneath his skin. He screams in terror as the scarab crawls it's way up his fat stomach and across his hairy chest. The warden grunts, claws, and scratches at it, trying to stop the bug, but to no avail. The scarab soon burrows up his neck and into his head before disappearing into his left-eye.
In the chamber under the Anubis statue, Devon, O'Connell, Evie, and Jonathan clear the dirt off the top of the sarcophagus, revealing a single, ominous hieroglyph.
"Well, who is it?" Jonathan asks
"'He That Shall Not Be Named'." Evy reads
O'Connell blows the sand off the top of the sarcophagus, revealing a star-shaped slot in it's lid.
"This looks like some sort of lock." O'Connell says pointing to the slot with his right-hand
"Never saw one like this before." Devon says
"Well, whoever's in here, sure wasn't getting out." Jonathan says
"Yeah, no kidding. It'd take a month to crack into this thing without a key." O'Connell says
"That's the kind of time I don't think we have." Devon says
"A key?" Evy mutters
Evy thought to herself for a moment, but soon the realization hit her.
"A key! A key! Now that's what he was talking about." Evy says
"Who-who was talking about what?" O'Connell asks
Evy starts rummaging through her bag.
"The man. The man on the barge. The one with the hook. He was looking for a key." Evy says
Evy pulls out the key/box.
"Hey, that's mine!" Jonathan pouts
Evy opens up the key/box and places it on the slot in the sarcophagus. It's eight sides fit perfectly. Evy smiles proudly while Devon, O'Connell, and Jonathan shared impressed expressions.
Suddenly, they all hear the warden screams echoing from outside. O'Connell draws his revolvers in both hands and rushes out with Devon and Evy to investigate while Jonathan stumbles back for the key/box before running out to catch up with the others.
Gad Hassan runs out from around the corner just outside the chamber in the labyrinth, screaming and swinging back and forth completely freaked from the extreme pain in his head, likely caused by the scarab. Devon, O'Connell, Evy, and Jonathan all run up just as the warden runs past them. He heads straight down the length of the labyrinth and slams his head straight into a rock wall. The warden drops to the ground and falls dead on his back. His screams were instantly silenced. Devon, O'Connell, Evy, and Jonathan stared in shock, horror, disbelief, and confusion.
Unknown to them, a dark cloaked figure steps out from a passageway to the right further up the tunnel behind them. He turns his head left and stares directly at Devon and his party with his red eyes glowing from under his hood. It was Lord Thanatos. The evil Dark Keyblade Master watches the heroes for a few moments with a sinister grin, though it couldn't be seen under his mask, then walks off down another passageway infront of him, disappearing into the darkness of the underground chambers.
Author's Note: The group finally makes it to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead. Upon arriving, they all begin their digging. Everything goes well until Devon's party finds a mysterious sarcophagus within the underground chambers and are surprised by their find.
