A/N- This is not an essential to read chapter but please do read all the same. It has been written with chapters that are written like a military history book in mind.
A/A/N- Also bear in mind that there is a difference to chapters labelled Key Terms. Key Term chapters refer to the world at large while supplemental chapter refers to military terms.
Supplemental (1) – Black Zero Command unit organisation and terminology Summary.
Black Zero Command has many units at their disposal and there are many different types of units. The following are common unit types and sizes but also there are some special unit types that require special mention. Black Zero Command, Outer Heaven and some other factions use the German language (with some exceptions) to name their military branches and units despite the majority of Outer Heaven, Black Zero Command citizens and other related factions citizens speaking some form of English.
Infantry (Infanterie) - Division- 3 Infantry Regiments with 3 Infantry Battalions per regiment. The lead infantry regiment also contains a heavy infantry battalion in addition to the standard infantry battalions. Also contains 1 artillery (Artillerie) Regiment of 4 Battalions, 3 of which are composed of light howitzers and light guns and the other containing medium and heavy howitzers and a single battery of heavy guns. An Anti-tank (PanzerJäger) Regiment of 2 battalions and a single Tank Destroyer (JagdPanzer) company provide anti-tank defence while a Flak Regiment of 2 battalions provides anti-air defence with one battalion composed of light anti-aircraft guns and the other battalion with a mix of heavy and light anti-aircraft guns. Also with an infantry division are the following battalions: Engineer (Pionere), Supply, Motorcycle/Armoured car reconnaissance (Aufklarungs), Hospital/Ambulance, Field-Construction, Signal. Finally, it also contains a divisional services regiment for all the other services that a division would require, i.e. food, post etc. Fields around 18,000 troops when deployed.
Panzer-(Armoured) Division- Combat elements consist of 1 Panzer Regiment of 4 battalions and either 2 or 3 PanzerGrenadier Regiments of 3 or 4 battalions each. The Artillery Regiment is like the infantry division except all the guns are motorised or self-propelled. The Anti-tank regiment is also similar to its infantry division counterpart except one battalion has Tank Destroyers instead of Anti-tank guns. All the anti-aircraft guns in the Flak regiment are either self-propelled or motorised. The Armoured Engineer battalion is equipped with half-tracks while the armoured reconnaissance Regiment consists of 3 battalions and 1 company of light tanks, 1 battalion is equipped with motorcycles and light armoured cars, 1 is equipped with heavy armoured cars and 1 battalion is equipped with light half-tracks. All other subunits in a panzer division are organised like the infantry division with the main exception of being motorised or mechanised and being slightly larger. Fields around 20,000-25,000 troops when deployed.
Motorised-Infantry Division (Infanterie-Division (Mot.)- Organised as per Infantry Division but all elements are motorised or self-propelled. Most elements mounted on trucks. No added armour support aside from self-propelled anti-tank guns and tank destroyers. Fields around 18,000-20,000 troops when deployed.
PanzerGrenadier-Division (Mechanised/Armoured Infantry-Division)- As per Motorised but with the following differences- Infantry elements are mounted in half-tracks and not trucks, all anti-tank guns are self-propelled or replaced with tank destroyers, all light anti-aircraft guns replaced by self-propelled vehicles, all artillery is self-propelled or towed by half-tracks. Majority of subunits use half-tracks. Also a mixed battalion of light and medium tanks and a battalion of assault guns are added to the division compared to motorised. Fields around 19,000-23,000 troops when deployed.
Jäger-Division- A lighter type of Infantry division consisting of 2, sometimes 3, Jäger Regiments of 2 or 3 Battalions each. Artillery Regiment at same strength as infantry-Division but equipped with lighter guns and howitzers. All other subunits are downsized from Infantry-Division. Reconnaissance Battalion is equipped with motorcycles and light armoured cars only. Fields around 11,000-13,000 troops when deployed.
GebirgsJäger-Division- like Jäger-Division but no vehicles in unit. Reconnaissance battalion provided with horses and highly trained infantry. Fields roughly the same number of troops as Jäger-Division when deployed
FallschirmJäger-Division (Airborne-Division) - Division organisation based on Jäger-Division. Consists of parachute and Glider borne units. Vehicles delivered by glider or transport planes. A company or battalion of airborne-light tanks are usually deployed with the division. Fields between 15,000 and 22,000 troops when deployed.
The following unit sizes usually have a headquarters unit to command the unit
Brigade- Unit size larger than a regiment but smaller than a division. Deploys 4,000-7,000 depending on unit type.
Regiment- Consists of a few battalions and several smaller unit types in general. Typical fields around 3,000-4,000 troops or more depending on unit type.
Battalion- Consists of several companies. Usually fields between 700-1,200 troops or more depending on unit type. Artillery battalions consist of several batteries rather than companies with a minimum of 12 guns per battalion but Black Zero Command artillery battalions usually contain 36 guns per battalion.
Company/Battery (Batterie)-Consists of several platoons, usually 3 or 4 of them and fields between 80-250 troops or more, once again depending on unit type. A battery is an artillery designation instead of company and consists of 2-4 platoons. Some types of Heavy Artillery Battery have only one gun.
Platoon-Consists of between 2 and 6 squads, fielding about 30-60 troops per platoon, again, depending on unit type. Artillery platoons are instead made up of sections and usually have 2 or 3 sections in a platoon and consists of about 2 – 6 guns although this unit is rarely used as Black Zero Command Artillery is rarely deployed below battery level.
Section- A section is the smallest Artillery unit in the military organisation of Black Zero Command. It consists of about 1 or 2 Artillery guns and about 20 troops on average. It is a formation rarely used on its own by Black Zero Command Artillery units as Black Zero Command Artillery Commanders rarely deploy artillery below battery level.
Squad- smallest unit in most military organisations, a Black Zero Command squad usually has between 9 and 12 men. However, Black Zero Command has several types of commando units which vary in purpose and their respective Commando squad formations vary in size. These purposes are Special operations, Army assistance operations and Advanced Combat Operations. Special Operations Commando squads are teams of 4 or 5 troops while Advanced Combat Operations Commando squads are enlarged squads of 15 or 16 troops. Army Assistance Operations Commando squads usually have 12 to 14 troops in a squad.
FlammPanzer- Tank equipped with flamethrowers, replacing either the main gun or one/all the machine guns on the vehicle.
SturmPanzer- Turret-less armoured assault vehicle based on a tank chassis and equipped with a large calibre Infantry Gun designed for infantry support. For example, the SturmPanzer IV is one such example of a SturmPanzer. Also called an assault gun.
