The tense mood dissipated to a more upbeat tone that turns out to be very one-sided. At least that's what Kira is analyzing from Jeralt's pained expression. She can tell that she does not want to deal with this stalwart looking knight.

"What's the score, Chief?" Kira requests his instructions.

"Just..." Jeralt pinches the bridge of his nose. "Do what I do... hopefully he's just as dense as I remember..."

"Uh say what?" That catches Kira's attention.

This one of those reunion situations you tryda steer clear from? 'Cuz that's the kinda vibe I'm gettin' from ya.

Kira can see Jeralt slouching as the gaped mouth knight bolts towards him, like he's attempting to literally sink into his shoulders.

"I- it is! Ha! It truly is! Captain Jeralt, it IS you!" The stocky man is ecstatic. "Do you remember me?! Its Alois! Your old right hand man!" He looks embarrassed and bows his head. "Well that's... how I always thought of myself anyway."

What choices were made to have that spike on your... Oh no...

A horrible realization hits Kira and as she cocks her head over to a curious Leonie, and back at the man. The dread intensifies.

There's TWO of them?!

"Oh, it must have been, what, twenty years? When you disappeared, I-I thought you went missing..." He stops himself his face curves into into an elated grin. "But I always knew you were still alive! And to see you again after all this time! Hahahaha, I swear its almost too good to be true!"

I can deck ya in the face, that's one way to find out... wait... what this dude just say? Whaddya mean 'you went missing?'

"Wait, you know Captain Jeralt?!" Leonie sounds astonished.

Alois turns to meet the young woman's amazement. "Know him?! Why he practically raised me! The man was, NAY, still is a legend among the Knights of Seiros!"

Sothis's curiosity is peaked. "Seems your dear captain has quite the past."

Kira's neutral masquerade cracks as he raises an eyebrow.

Wow whadda shocker... and I'm just findin' out 'bout this NOW?!

"That's quite enough, Leonie." Jeralt mutters out before directing his attention to his old acquaintance. "Alois... loud and bundling with joy as always... but drop the 'Captain' nonsense, I'm not your boss anymore."

The way Jeralt phrased that gives Kira hope that they won't have to put up with this... enthusiastic individual for much longer and they can be on their way.

Far away from the sound of it.

"These days I'm just a wandering mercenary. One that has a long journey ahead of him." Jeralt takes the initiative and firmly jabs Alois on the arm as a sign of camaraderie. "Goodbye, old friend."

Yeeeeesssssss!

Kira bows her chin and flutters her eyes close in relief. Next stop is the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus: an amazing country with a rather unfortunate name.

The hurt expression across Alois's face brightens Kira's hopes even more. Leonie however contorts with lukewarm disappointment, like she's been rejected an opportunity to meet a new and promising colleague.

"Right..." Alois's solemn acceptance is all Kira needed to hear. "Well then... safe travels, Cap- Jeralt..."

See ya never, stan boy!

Jeralt does not hesitate to turn his back and gently shoves a frowning Leonie to come along. Keeping up with appearances, Kira at least offers the wounded man the basic courtesy of a curt bow before she-

"Wait!" Alois's sudden exclamation freezes the three mercenaries in their tracks. "H-hold on! This isn't how this ends! Captain, I insist that you return to the Monastery with me! She'll want to speak with you!"

Jeralt's body tenses to the point it as hard as stone before a loud displeasing exhale releases him.

"Garreg Mach Monastery..." He revealed the name in a slow disheartened tone before conceding with. "I suppose this was inevitable."

Kira's stoic façade brilliantly cloaks her true feelings that are boiling deep down inside her.

Come again?! Oh, you have got to be friggin'...

"And how about you, kid?" Alois directs his attention to Kira. "Are you with the Captain, too?"

Oooooooh... Imma be more than with the Captain once I'm through with you, you LARPin,' role-playin' fanboy, irrelevant piece a'-

"It is a pleasure to meet you." Kira greets Alois with her trademark and monotone voice, sounding poise and proper with each word. "I am the Konpeki Katana. Acting Lieutenant of the Blade Breakers."

"Hah! Such grace and formality! Like a maiden-knight from the fabled tales!" Alois praises. "Jeralt must be fortunate to have you by his side!"

A vein pulses in Leonie's temple as her brow twitches.

"And you?"

Leonie does not hesitate to sell her brand. "I'm Leonie Pinelli, I've been with Captain Jeralt ever since I became his greatest apprentice years ago! I've learned all there is to know from him!"

Suck up...

"Really?!" Alois is astonished. "Why... looks like we share something in common! Hah! Wonders never cease!"

Clearly...

"I see those two becoming fast friends."

"It would be an honor to show you two the Monastery! You will join us will you?"

"Absolutely!" Leonie gleefully answers for the Blade Breakers. "I've always wanted to see Garreg Mach! I hear their Academy and the training is the best it has to offer!"

Alois and Leonie are utterly delighted by this turn of events, much to the misfortune of Jeralt and Kira.

"Something troubling you Captain?" Alois notices Jeralt's pained expression. "You aren't about to run off again, are you?"

Jeralt reluctantly shakes his head. "Even I wouldn't run from the Knights of Seiros..."

A theatrical laugh thunders from Alois as he rings his arm around Jeralt's neck, much to the mercenary's discomfort. After shoving him off, the stout knight assures him that they will be off just as soon the students are gathered, meaning they have a moment to rest.

As Alois, departed, Leonie does not hesitate to follow him, possibly to learn more about her beloved captain from his 'old friend'. And based on their reactions, their chemistry is instant and natural.

That leaves Kira and Jeralt alone, both of them very much not looking forward to what they got roped into.

"Y'know..." Kira starts slowly. "I can make it look like an accident."

Jeralt's reaction is instant as he casts an alarmed glare.

"Wha- no! Absolutely not!"

"Aww c'mmmmoooon, Chief!" Kira pleads. "Seriously, know one will ever know it was us! Not even Aho-Chan! 'Sides, the look on your face is just screamin' we should bail in the exact opposite direction."

"You're not performing ANY assassinations!" Jeralt sternly orders. "Especially any on him! Understood?"

Kira rolls her eyes. "Fiiiiiiiinnnnneeee... For real though, Chief... spill it, what's the deal with fanboy over there?"

Jeralt bites his lip before he answers, not even looking at Kira. "He's... an old apprentice that... became one of my closest friends."

"Pfft... Don't let Leonie hear ya say that."

Jeralt grimly continues. "We were inseparable, for reasons beyond my comprehension. But... twenty years ago..." His face turns white as a ghost as he loses the will to speak.

"Life happened?" Kira carefully supplies.

"Very." He is quick to dismiss this conversation. "Just... be ready to move out. And mind your manners!"

"Always doooooooo!"

Kira watches, somewhat concerned as Jeralt stomps away.

Gee, wonder what this Gary Mack whatchamacallit did to rub him the wrong way? And why do I hafta get dragged along?

"Oh quit your pouting!" Sothis chastises. "I swear almost nothing pleases you!"

Before Kira can even deliver a quip response, the mysterious girl beats her to it. "Ah. It seems your presence is required. Get going!"

Aside from the fact that Kira loathed being hurried along like a child, she does notice the charming yellow-caped boy, Claude, waving over to her to join him along with the other two future rulers of their respective nations.

"Ugh... why me...?"

*FE*

Being in touch with her tatemae, Kira fluidly strolls over to the three future major players of Fodlan's geopolitics who are resting by armored horses and mobile knights on foot patrolling their surroundings and collecting the students who fled to the village.

"Your Highnesses. Your Grace." Kira greets with bow. "Please allow me to express my gratitude for your assistance in battle."

"I must admit," Edelgard neutrally starts. "I was skeptical of your strategy, but despite our lack in numbers, you truly show as an adept commander as well as a warrior."

Just adept huh? Well... she's high up the food chain, so guess she doesn't know how'da suck up even if she wants'ta.

"You are too kind, Your Highness." Kira offers a humble bow. "Forgive me, but do you request an audience with me?"

"Well I certainly do." Claude is quick to speak first. "I'm sure they do as well, buuut I did call you over here, soooo... c'mon relax! Nothing to do right now, except wait and just chat. Nothing wrong with that, right?"

If it weren't for the shades adorned atop of her eyes, the three would have seen a suspicious wrinkle in Kira's expression.

"I accept your... invitation." Kira speaks carefully. "However, I fear I am not one much for conversation, so please forgive me for my lack of... initiative on dialogue."

Guan Yu's Beautiful Beard, way'da sound like a friggin' tool!

"Please its no trouble!" Dimitri assures her. "We just simply wish to thank you, and know that you will be properly compensated for the trouble."

Oh, thanks! Does that mean I can go now?

"Agreed." Edeldard's refined voice joins in, looking mildly impressed. "As I have said, from what I have seen in battle. Your skills are beyond question."

I mean I did save your lives, but... wait... why do I get the feelin' you guys didn't just flagged me in invite to boost my ego?

"You're clearly an experienced mercenary." She continues giving Kira an inquisitive stare. "And your superior... that would be Jeralt yes? Captain of the Blade Breakers."

Congrats, ya getta cookie!

But Edelgard is not finish. "Former Captain of the Knights of Seiros, and oft praise as the strongest knight who ever live. Have I missed anything?"

Ignorin' the fact I'm JUST piecing all this together, you left out the part on how I pummeled him when we first met. Heh, nah, I'll keep that on the DL just this once, Otchan.

Kira shakes her head. "Very observant, Your Highness. I am very fortunate to have the Captain as my employer. However..." Kira bites her lip. "This is the first I am hearing that he had any direct affiliations with the Church."

Dimitri and Edelgard appear clearly baffled, while Claude maintains his lukewarm smile while a subtle twitch in his brows is noticed by Kira.

"How curious..." Edelgard remarks. "I'd wager the explanation for that is fascinating indeed."

"Assuming we would get an explanation." Dimitri thoughtfully points out.

And I could not care any less.

"Hey!" Claude shamelessly dives in. "You are coming with us to the Monastery right? Of course you are! I'd love to bend your ear as we travel!"

Unfortunately... and I thought I had my fair share with Isekai Monasteries.

"Oh, I know I probably mentioned this earlier, but we're all students at the esteemed Officer's Academy at Garreg Mach Monastery." Kira takes note that his use of the word 'esteemed' sounded too casual to be genuine.

Claude frowns and shakes his head. "We were doing some training exercises until those bandits hit. I definitely got the worse of it."

Says the guy who bailed the first chance he got.

Edelgard smites him with a scowl. "That would be because you ran off."

Claude easily brushes off her harsh words and admits, "Too true! I was the first to make a strategic retreat. Surely you heard of them?"

Okay, I like you already.

"In fact, my retreat was so strategic that I brought back our savior." He turns to Kira and flashes a mock bow. "To which we thank you for, dear madam."

Kira's cheeks flush and grins from cheek to cheek under her mask.

"Ah so that what it was Claude." Dimitri grins appearing impressed. "I always assume there was another reason behind your sudden departure from the battle."

Edelgard's stark face indicates she's not convinced. "His intentions were as clear as day." She directs her statement to Dimitri. "You will prove a lacking ruler if you cannot see the truth behind a person's words."

"Hmm." Dimitri hums looking slightly disappointed in Edelgard's jaded outlook. "You will prove a lacking ruler yourself if you look for deceit behind every word and fail to trust those whom your rely on."

Well then... clearly these guys aren't really buddy buddies. Guess I can't be surprise, but seein' it up close...

Claude looks amused "Oh joy. A royal debate between Their Highnesses. I wonder how being completely predictable affects ones ability to wield power."

Why are you soooo awesome?

"Personally, as the embodiment of trust, I say your little exchange smacks of naiveté."

Edelgard's temple pulsates as she casts Claude a fuming glare. "Me, naïve?! Tell me are you actually incapable of keeping quiet, or is your lack of self-awareness a condition of some sort?"

Kira tightens her jaw to resist the urge to smirk as she is finding Claude all the more charming. As well as this conversation much more amusing than she expected.

That's right... fight my pretties.

Unfortunately for the blue-haired girl, the heated argument cooled as Dimitri is quick to intervene.

"I think you two made your point." The heir to Faerghus curtly mediates before turning to Kira with an apologetic look. "Please forgive our digression. I must speak with you if you would have the moment."

Kira immediately stiffens, anxious to see where Dimitri is going with this. Though she cannot help but feel she has a fairly good idea what he desires.

"The way you countered the bandits with bold and I daresay efficient tactics, not to mention the way you held your own against their leader, it was all truly captivating! You never lost control of the situation. Nay, you maintained it even in the face of impossible odds. It showed me I still have much to learn."

You're tryna shill me are ya?

"Your skill is precisely why I must ask you to consider lending your services to the Empire." Edelgard is quick to hijack the conversation, quick and direct with her approach. "As you already know, I am no mere student, I am also Adrestia's-"

"Halt, Edelgard." Dimitri regains the reins. "Please allow me to finish my own preposition."

Yeah, what he said kinda... 'sides I already worked for the Empire once and I still feel a little dirty.

"The Holy of Kingdom of Faerghus is in dire need of exceptional individuals such as yourself. Please, do consider returning to the Kingdom with me."

'Kay, now THAT'S a tempting offer! I know I love to throw shade at Faerghus 'cuz of that name, but they're warriors, culture, even the land itself! Pure Isekai Paradise! Still...

"Woah there! You two sure are hasty!" Claude swipes the reins away from Dimitri. "Trying to recruit someone you just met. Tactless really."

You're gonna say somethin' charming are ya?

"I was personally planning on developing a deep and lasting friendship on our way back to the Monastery BEFORE begging for favors."

Stop being so smooth! I get it!

"But it seems there's no time for niceties in this world." Claude turns to Kira. "So, illustrious warrior, lets get right to it. Where does your allegiance lie?"

"Hmm... it seems ones place of birth is quite significant to them. Not surprisingly, they are impressed by you that they are eager to recruit your services." Sothis observes carefully eyeing each heir before turning to Kira with a whimsical look. "Well?"

Kira ignores her and darts her eyes to the floor. She's already made up her mind and yet...

Adrestia is basically how Fodlan got started. The joint is teeming with ancient history, and the climate is spot on. Still, don't like the idea of gettin' myself involve in Imperial politics again... least they have competent mages. And one helluva gorgeous capital.

Ignorin' the obvious 'bout that name, Faerghus is actually the bomb! Knights up there are top-dogs when it comes to fightin', not to mention they fit the bill on that honor and chivalry stuff.

And then there's Leicester. Only 'Republic' in Fodlan, if ya count five wannabe big shots runnin' the whole joint. Still, Deidru is a looker and I've seen Alliance archers in action. Almost top-notch. Almost.

Regardless, my mind's already made up.

"Your Highnesses, Your Grace. I fear I must decline your invitations." Kira answers appearing emotionless in her reply, disregarding their immediate hurt faces. "We have already accepted a contract, which I cannot reveal more in respect to the client's confidentiality. Once our business with the Monastery is concluded, we must be on our way. However, if you wish to seek our employment in the future, I will direct you to my Captain before we depart should you wish."

In other words, I'm friggin' Switzerland, so get used to it!

"I understand." Dimitri solemnly concedes. "Regardless, we are in your debt for saving us, and know that I will find a way to repay you."

"Oh well... can't win them all, I guess." Claude's casual remark does little to hide his dejected expression. "Maybe, I'll find a way to sweeten the deal, somehow. You'll at least give me that, right?"

Edelgard looks away and hums in disappointment. Kira gets the feeling that she's not used to people saying no to her.

Well there's a first time for anything, Princess.

"You truly have no shame do you?"

Before the conversation could develop further, loud stomps of footprints are heard, garnering the attention of the three future leaders and the mercenary. Kira struggles to maintain her neutral façade as Alois makes himself known.

"Alright, that's enough small talk! Its time to head back to the Monastery!" He declares.

As the three heirs prepare to mount their horses, Alois turns to Kira with a proud smirk.

"I've already told your colleagues this, but once we arrive, The Archbishop will likely have an audience with the three of you! Haha, nothing to worry about! The Captain and her go WAY back!"

Alois makes his departure, but not before roughly patting the girl on the back, like he considers her a close friend.

Kira winces, and clenches her platinum teeth under her shut jaw. This situation is growing worse for her, though she would not even think of how might be so fearing she may jinx herself.

"My, my. They are in such a hurry." Sothis's observation expands as she continues. "You know... those three are truly unique in their own way."

"Yeah, yeah..."

Despite Kira's dismissive words, she cannot help but quietly observe each future leader. From their gestures, countenance, even the way they mount their horse, they truly do stand out.

Her eyes glance over at Claude, the one she admires the most.

That smile can make heads turn alright, but its safe to say its not legit..."

He then turns over the chivalrous Dimitri.

So far, the dude sported himself as Prince Charming, but can't help but feel there's an Edgelord lurking beneath him.

Then last but not least, Edelgard, who flashes an inquisitive glance over to Kira.

The chick screams Proto Kanto-jin! And she's got some nerve to size me up even when I shot her down!

"You are aware that you are starting to make faces. And you are wearing a mask no less!" Sothis chastises. "Now then, sally forth and be ready to deal with *yawn* whatever... may be in store for... Goodness I'm so sleepy... I was... hoping I would lecture you before..."

"Shhhhhhh..." Kira hushes her. "Time to sleep, little Candy Cane."

Another yawn is heard from the green-haired girl, but before she could produce a single syllable, Kira can see the apparition of the call fall into a peaceful slumber.

For now, she has free reign inside her own mind. She may need this luxury given the unwanted detour.

"Hey!"

The flamboyant looking mercenary looks up to see her practical looking colleague galloping towards her with an extended hand.

In response, Kira rests a hand over her well-endowed chest and lets out a breathy sigh. "My hero..."

Leonie frowns with half-lidded eyes. "Quiet."

As Kira climbs atop of Leonie's horse, it comes clear that she, too, is succumbing to weariness as her eyes grow heavy.

"Phew! Bein' a major league plaaayyah sure makes ya tired!" Kira exclaims before crashing her head against Leonie's back.

"Ow!" Leonie grunts from the impact. "What are you-"

"Shhhh..." Kira lets out a long drawn out yawn. "Pillow no talkie... sleepy time now..."

Leonie's scowl softens and she concedes with a rolls of her eyes and gingerly trapping Kira's hand with her own. She turns back onto the trail with a content smile.

"Get some rest, Kira." She gently encourages her. "Think you've earned some shuteye before we meet some top-dogs."

The short haired girls snickers, having a strange yet amusing feeling of borrowing some of Kira's jargon.

"Hyah!" She cries, ordering her horse to catch up with the rest of the column.

White Clouds

Great Tree Moon

Three Houses

The icy winds of the Oghma Mountains have begun to scatter, and the verdant fields once again spring to life across Fodlan, heralding the start of a new year. As they celebrate the dawning year, the people pray that they may realize their full potential just as a tiny sprout hopes to grow into a great tree.

Hailing from an the wondrous city nation that is known as Lion City to the common tongue, The former Mercenary, Kira Appakatto, is now forced to take up the mantle of the peerless Konpeki Katana to track down the man that has brought her to this realm against her will. Her journey has been one of great hardship, having loss two close colleagues, forcefully summoned as well, on the carnage that was wrecking the archipelago of Brigid. However, she gained two honorable comrades, Captain Jeralt Eisner, a renowned mercenary with immense strength and skill who leads his small band known as the Blade Breakers. And Leonie Pinelli, a promising pupil of the veteran captain with a boundless drive to become the best mercenary Fodlan has ever seen.

Completing their contract in Brigid, and saving the now vassal state from a gruesome fate, the two made a solemn vow to help Kira find her way back to her own realm, and the first step is to find the man who brought her to Fodlan, an illusive individual known as Aelfric.

For two years, they turned up every trail, every clue they could find, taking up contracts from all across the continent and its prominent three nations. And now, their latest path of bread crumbs leads them back to the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus.

However, due to the recent events at Remire Village, The Blade Breakers have been summoned to the most sacred site in all of Fodlan, Garreg Mach Monastery, where they will be properly rewarded for their heroic actions.

How they will be rewarded remains to be seen...

"Kira, wake up!" Leonie's voice rudely cuts through Kira's slumber. "We're almost there!"

Kira stirs around and cries out as she nearly falls over. Thankfully, she's caught by Leonie and allows herself to shake her head awake.

As she becomes gradually more conscious, Kira notices an unusual shade engulfing her and the party she's traveling with, as she gazes up, she lets out a hum seeing majestic trees towering above them with the branches and vegetation contributing shielding them from a normal clear morning.

"Aww man..." Kira mutters, rubbing her eye. "I was havin' the most killer dream."

Leonie smirks. "Were you now?" She asks, curious.

"I just got outta work, and next thing I knew, some geeks were hyped for a comic-con I didn't know about. So I went, and..." Kira sighs. "Total paradise... but it only got better."

Kira grins dreamily. "At the mall, every weeb was vyin' for control of the ultimate prize: the handcrafted battle dress work by Julianne from MWJ. I went up on stage, competed against those unintelligent imbeciles, and came out on top after strikin' the trademark pose to perfection! And then... just before I could try my new getup..."

"Ow!" Leonie cries after being jabbed in the arm.

"Someone HADDA ruin the moment! Thanks a lot, Aho-Chan! YA TOTAL BUZZKILL!"

Leonie grits her teeth and hisses. "How was I supposed to know? And besides, how many nicknames do I have anyway?! First its Peaches! Then Aho-Chan, whatever that means! And then there's-"

"Tita?" Kira guess with a snicker.

Leonie smites the blue-haired girl with a fist atop of her noggin.

"Told you not to call me that!"

"OW!" Drama fumes in Kira's voice. "Gee, this is what I get for tryin'a be nice!"

Leonie's scowl shifts to a concerned frown. "Soo... mind if I ask you something?"

"Ehhh, whatevs..." Kira casually responds stretching her arms up and pressing her cheeks together to wake herself up.

Leonie swallows a lump in her throat before mustering out, "Conime, I've heard you mentioned that before, but..." A pregnant pause lingers as Leonie fears she's treading in dangerous waters. "I... take it there a festival?"

Kira blinks before smiling. "Waaaaay better. Basically, ya dress up as..." She struggles to find the right words. How does she explain this to a girl from another realm? "As one of your favorite hero or idol from an ani- a story, and ya hang out with friends who're dressed up like their favorite characters, too! Ya meet famous people, actors, performers, maybe see a show or two, rave it out, and just have fun." Kira smirks. "So, if Fodlan ever decides to have its first Conime event, I'll be sure to give ya the best Captain Jeralt getup there is. Fake beard, flask, and all that."

Leonie's brows furrow, but the sparkle in her pupils shows she is curious of the prospect.

"Oh," Kira nearly forgets. "S'not enough to look like your idol," Kira's tone shifts to the mild and stoic tone of who Leonie deeply admires. "You have to act like him, too." Her voice is slightly gravelly as she lowers her head and averts eye contact, a trait seen in the Captain. "Gee, I can't believe one of my biggest secrets is coming back to bite me in the ass. And the worse part of it is to explain all of this to the two girls I have to put up with on a daily basis."

Leonie is initially flabbergasted by Kira's poor impression of Jeralt before struggling to contain her laughter.

"Nah, won't work... body type's too skinny, plus the hair..."

Leonie is completely taken aback. "Uh, come again?! What do you mean by my body type?!"

But Kira obliviously shakes her head. "Think the Larper might be better for the job. Oh, I know! I might have you cosplay as Konpeki Katana herself."

"Hold up, not so fast!" Leonie is not letting this go. "What's this about my body? Are you saying that-"

"Well you're a little taller, buuut... yeah... yeah! Think you can pull it off!" Kira hums planting the edge of her palm underneath in chin. "Nope never mind KK, I've got the perfect role for-"

Leonie sighs and begrudgingly drops it. After working with Kira for two years, she learned to just let things like this go.

"How 'bout this? Next time we make a pitstop on your turf, we might as well throw a little Conime of our own. Whaddya say? I might think of somethin' kawaii for you to wear. With a little hard work and a little role play, you might ace Julianne!"

Leonie blinks and her cheeks burn red. "Uh, wait! Slow down! Don't get the wrong idea. I was just curious, that's all."

Kira pouts and averts her gaze like an entitled toddler.

"Welp... our talk was nice." Kira says as she slides off Leonie's horse and onto the ground.

"Woah, hey," Leonie looks taken aback. "Sure you don't want to enjoy the ride?"

"We're almost there, are we? 'Sides, I hafta stand up."

Kira gives Leonie a grateful nod before marching ahead at a quick pace to see what the Captain is up to right now. However, she sees that she has mingled herself with the weary and still shaken students of the Officers Academy.

Poor mofos.

Further down the earthly path, she can see her boss 'mingling' with several of the knights, including that hidden yandare, Alois, focusing on Jeralt in awe. She notices one of them, a fairly young knight looking rather indifferent and is mostly keeping his focus on the road ahead.

"Well now, look who's awake!" A familiar suave voice reaches her ear.

Kira looks to see Claude materializing on her left flank with Dimitri next to him.

Huh, you guys lose your horse privileges or somethin'?

"I trust you rested well?" That haughty and regal voice belonging to Edelgard reaches Kira's right ear.

Kira turns to see the Imperial Princess walking with such poise and bearing with her head looking straight ahead, like a woman on a mission.

"Wish I would have." Claude pouts. "Our dear four-legged companions departed for more... knightly purposes. So, we must endure the rest of our precarious journey on foot."

All three fix their attention on Claude.

"What?" He innocently queries. "I'm just practicing how to sound more eloquent. Geesh, you guys should be flattered..."

Kira bites her lip to hide her smile.

"Anyways," Dimitri starts. "This will be your first time at the Monastery, yes? I'd be happy to show you around."

"It really is Fodlan in a nutshell," Claude coolly remarks. "The good and the bad."

"Like it or not, we'll be there soon enough," Edelgard says tactfully.

Kira says nothing and returns her attention onwards.

Meh.

It does not take long until the traveling party reaches the outskirts leading out of the forest and onto clear grasslands with steeper earth further onward.

But its what's on that steep land is what catches Kira's eye.

"There it is." Edlegard coolly announces. "Garreg Mach Monastery."

That's not a Monastery, that's a friggin' fortress!"

"Oh my... its beautiful!"

Surrounded by a thorough set of impenetrable barriers, both natural and man-made, Garreg Mach Monastery is blessed with jagged rock formations atop of the steep ground, add to that, the closer the monastery is, the more uneven the road becomes. Add to that, there are also sturdy walls that look to be in preem condition. As Kira enhances her occipital range, she notices an impressive set of sentries atop the towers, that and trebuchets carefully planted atop the walls with their own small garrison to protect and man them if need be.

Huh, these guys are no slouches. Tryin' to muscle in on this joint would be a nightmare.

Kira notices the sentries looking relieved that that their comrades and the students returned safely. But she is quick to spy a few, particularly older looking ones, becoming elated and begin waving their hands like small kids seeing their favorite hero come to life.

I hafta guess, prolly happy to see the Bossman. Oh boy, we're gonna have a whole fan-club waitin' for us are we?

But past the walls and defenses must by the monastery proper. A majestic gothic sprawl that looks more like a citadel city than a sacred place of worship. Even the Monastery has its own defenses! Kira can't help but think the garrison in charge of protecting Garreg Mach must be an impressive sight of its own.

After trudging through the rough terrain, Kira finds herself perplexed to find a large settlement, about the size of a small city, safely nestled within Garreg Mach's walls, yet the Monastery itself towering over it like. Kira can't decide if the sight makes her feel amazed or unsettled.

Either way, its best to keep those thoughts to herself.

The town itself is in bright spirits with merchants selling their wears, knights patrolling the streets, children chasing each other in whatever irrational games they have in store, basically the type of prosperous town that Kira has seen time and time again throughout her travels in Fodlan.

Though given that this is on Monastery grounds, her mind can't help but wonder that this place stands out from the others.

Huh, maybe people who earned enough points with the Church... get to live close to it? Ah, forget it! Not a big deal right now.

Kira purses her lips in frustration finding that she and her party have to climb up ANOTHER steep path before entering the imposing gates of Garreg Mach.

Geez, who designed this place?!

Smooth ground awaits them past the gates as they make their way into what seems like a small market with merchants with various sorts of goods trying to appeal to the new arrivals about the items in stock.

One of the merchants catches Kira's attention.

"Hey! If it isn't my favorite customers!" A bright upbeat voice coming from a light red haired woman wrapped into a long bushy ponytail hops around waving her hand before rushing forward.

"Hey, Anna!" Leonie warmly greets. "Biz treating you well?"

Kira raises a brow, seems she's rubbing off on her in more ways than one.

Anna gives Leonie a strange look, but lets out a chuckle. "Please, kid! Remember who're your talking to!" She gazes over at Kira. "Still wearing that creepy mask I see?"

Kira's jaw tightens. "Oh, bite me!"

Jeralt swaths the blue haired girl against the back of her head and approaches Anna. "Been keeping yourself busy. Any word about our... mystery man?"

Anna's expression turns serious. "I'm owed a few favors, but my network's not what it once was. That and your guy's a slippery one, I can narrow it down, buut..."

"You need more funds?" Jeralt bluntly pieces together.

"Sharp as a tack, buddy ol' pal!"

"This a good start?"

Anna is not prepared and barely catches the big bag of coins Kira suddenly offers. She beams at the huge bounty.

"Wow! You do know how to deliver, kid!" She chuckles. "Don't worry, I'll put this money to good use! Like there's ever any doubt with that!"

Jeralt looks sullen but keeps silent. Leonie, on the other hand, is rather speechless on Kira's generous... investment.

"Cool, money well spent then."

"Thanks a bunch!"

"Oh... any word from my baby?"

Anna casts a sad frown. "Sorry. Even on the black market, a book like that is hard to find."

Kira bows her head and sighs.

"Well... keep me in the loop."

"Alright, lets get a move on." Jeralt urges his party along.

"Come back soon!" Anna calls out watching her three favorite customers walk onward.

After making up a decent of stairs, Jeralt stops in his tracks at the majestic doors leading into the Monastery as if he senses he's being watch.

"Captain?" Leonie grabs his attention. "What's up?"

Jeralt glances up and his eyes narrow. "Rhea is here."

Leonie makes and inquisitive sound and glances upward before awing inquisitively.

Kira follows suit to see someone standing tall atop of a balcony. Her vision is enhanced to see that a woman of ethereal timeless beauty, dressed in a creaseless white dress with majestic cape of twilight blue and dazzling gold. Her golden crown that appears purely ceremonial by nature, emphasizes her divine aura. However it is her smooth long lime green hair that catches her attention, instantly reminding Kira of Sothis, that and her matching green eyes are gazing down upon them.

Though, she cannot help her gaze is fixated on her. Maybe its the mask? Either way, its not like she looks to do harm, but the enigmatic stares does little to ease Kira's tense shoulders.

She's thankful that the large doors open and Alois escorts them inside.

Kira has a sneaking feeling that woman is none other than the Archbishop of the Church, also known as the most powerful person in all of Fodlan. And now she's going to have an audience with her.

IIIIII don't like you starin' at me laaaadddyyyyy...

As the wind flies through her silky hair, Rhea steps away from the balcony as the three enter the Monastery. She lets out a curious hum as she enters her quarters.

"I wonder..." Her smooth voice is regal and faintly breathy. "Did the flow of time bring you here?"

"Lady Rhea," A familiar elegant and stern voice of an old friend reaches her ears. "Whenever you're ready."

Rhea offers a warm smile. "I nearly am, Seteth. However, I wish to visit the infirmary first.

His stark yet stoic face subtlety displays her understanding but not without tactfully questioning, "I trust we will not keep our audience waiting long?"

A fluid chuckle escapes Rhea's lips as she departs her quarters and into a stone filled corridor. "Be at ease, Seteth." She assures her. "And in all fairness, Jeralt was notorious for reporting to later than usual." She smiles thinking of the audacity as precious nostalgia.

Seteth's expression remains mostly unchanged, aside from the slight furrow of his brows.

As they reach their destination, after passing a couple of patrolling knights and wandering monks and nuns who graciously greet Rhea, the two enter a fairly large room deemed fit for a medical professional.

If that medical professional was anything but neat and organized. Much to the frustration of the tiny girl with light violet hair meticulously tending to the wounded knight.

The knight and the child becomes fully alert at the new arrivals approaching him.

"Oh hi, Lady Rhea!" The girl greets eagerly.

"Your Grace." The knight grunts as he struggles to stand to his feet.

"Peace, Damien." Rhea's low smooth voice assures him as she gingerly helps him back onto the bed. "You did wonderful, Astrid. Please allow me to perform the finishing touches."

Rhea's graceful words earned an adorably pouty face from the girl, feeling jealous that she didn't finish her work. But the Archbishop's warm smile, and her words of praise are more than enough for the green-haired woman to take over healing him.

With a hand fluttering atop his forehead, Rhea murmurs quietly that no one can make out until vibrant light illuminated from her hand. Damien quickly finds himself wrapped around the light as if his aura is manifesting it, but the aching on his body, even ones that he did not recognize, quickly disperses.

He relaxes his tense shoulders as his body feels like water.

"Much better. Thank you." He curtly tells her, but genuinely appreciative for her efforts.

"Think nothing of it." Rhea graciously replies. "I am merely overjoyed that both our students and knights have returned safe and sound."

"Well, to be honest, Your Grace," Damien starts. "I don't think... that wouldn't have been the case if it weren't for her."

"Oh?" Rhea's eyes sparkle with curiosity. "Who do you mean?"

"Its been years since I last set eyes on this place..." Jeralt bitterly mutters mostly to himself than the two girls on his flanks. "To be forced to see her now."

Before departing the trio, Alois guided them into what must be where the Archbishop and her inner circle gather given that there are no dull looking pews and the throne erected in front of the colorful glass windows manipulating the color of the interior.

Still, the majority of the Blade Breakers are not eager to be here, Kira and Jeralt specifically. Leonie, on the other hand, looks as if she's a whimsical child in the middle of candy forest as she thoroughly gazes the sublime atmosphere with doe like eyes.

But its only Jeralt's displeasure that snaps Leonie out of her wonder.

"Captain? Everything okay?"

Kira is less sympathetic. "Yeah, Chief, somethin' you wanna get off your chest?"

A long drown out sigh escapes the lips of the grizzled mercenary.

"I... never told both of you about this but..." He bows his head with his voice lowered. "Many years ago, I was the Captain in the Knights of Seiros."

Kira rolls her eyes. "Any info that we DON'T know you would like to spill? OW!"

Her cry comes from Leonie socking her in the shoulder before asking her captain without a trace of judgement. "Does that mean, you reported to Lady Rhea? You actually knew her?"

"Yes... and yes." Jeralt replies and turns to Kira. "I think you know this, but the majority of folks of Fodlan are devout followers of the teachings of Serios."

Kira is only half listening at this point. Of course she knows that already!

Wait, Seiros... why'zat name ring a bell?

"And... Lady Rhea happens to be the leader of that ridiculously large organization."

Leonie casts him a puzzled glare. "You don't seem pretty eager to be here, sir. Everything okay?"

Yeah why don'tcha just loud mouth a powerful religious organization a little louder? Think that'll work JUUUUSST FIIINNNE!

But before Jeralt can answer, the clinking and low creaking of the doors behind them echoes throughout the room before a guard announces that the Archbishop is present.

Kira quickly discards her honne and quickly becomes tune to her tatemae, her face and body gestures are poise and professional.

Finally meetin' the top dog, huh? Well hopefully the Chief didn't screw things up that bad where she stakes us on the spot.

The overlapping clicking of footsteps are heard meaning there's more than one person. Whoever it is, it must be something that must be close to this Archbishop.

Kira's peripheral vision catches the smooth silky lime green hair before the same graceful looking woman from before appears. Her grin is serene yet her eyes remain neutral, serving to reinforce Kira's barriers.

'Kaaaay... chick's gotta poker face. Not gettin' any bad vibes from her, but better safe than sorry.

Beside the Archbishop appears a stark looking man with with a darker shade of green chin-length hair that's more than enough to hide his ears, but he shares the same matching eyes and a simple yet lovely head jewelry as the woman beside him. That elegant, albeit regimental attire is similar to the woman next to him but prefers a dark blue style to it.

Unlike her, however, his stoic gaze shows reserve and suspicion.

And Kira has a feeling he's not afraid of showing it.

Gee... wouldn't want him as my boss.

"Thank you for your patience Jeralt." The man is blunt and sharp with his words. "My name is Seteth, I'm an advisor to her Grace Lady Rhea."

Jeralt crunches his brows, but nods. "Right. Hello."

Heh. Chief's stones are hard core. Throwin' some 'tude 'round like that.

"Jeralt." Its Rhea's turn to speak, her smile brightens offers a warm bow of her head. "It has been far too long. I wonder... was it the will the of The Goddess that we would have another chance meeting like this?"

She gonna talk like this the whole convo. 'Cuz if so, Imma just zone her out.

Jeralt responds with a proper bow and replying, "Forgive my silence all these years, Your Grace. Much has... happen since we last spoke."

Kira takes note of Rhea's expression. She looks slightly hurt but maintains her positive aura.

"So I see." She thoughtfully sets her eyes on Kira then onto Leonie. "The miracle of fatherhood has blessed you." She turns back to Jeralt. "These are your children, are they not?"

Kira nearly flinches, completely taken aback. Leonie is more expressive in her reaction.

"Uh, huh?!" Is what the brash girl can muster.

Wha...? She for real?!

Jeralt remains undeterred and answers, "No. After what happened... the idea of having children has long passed."

Kira slightly tilts over to Jeralt. Although masqueraded by a mask, that piece of trivia catches her off guard.

Wow... no wonder the dude's a heavy drinker. That's... rough, Chief.

He carries on without faltering or hesitation. "I'm sure you've heard of the Blade Breakers over the last couple of years. This is them. Not much to look at, but they can hold their own and more."

Rhea's face goes through the motions of subtle sorrow and amazement so naturally. Kira could not tell if this is all part of the act or if her feelings are legitimate.

"I see." She says softly, reflecting on the Captains solemn words, before fluidly shifting the flow. "And indeed I have. All of you have done such remarkable feats and deeds."

"Thank you, Your Grace." Leonie makes herself known with a curt bow. "I'm Leonie Pineli. I've been with Captain Jeralt from the very beginning and I'm his greatest apprentice."

The other two Blade Breakers cast uneasy glances over at Leonie, and she quickly notices their gazes making her nervous.

"I must insist that you only speak when you are spoken to while in the presence of the Archbishop." Seteth sternly chastises her.

Leonie winces and her confidence wanes as she impulsively raise her shoulders and looks down at the floor. "Right. Sorry."

But a harmless laugh comes flows from Rhea's lips, easing the tension in the air. And, as strange as it feels for Kira, she felt relaxed.

"Please, do not apologize." The Archbishop gently assures her. "In fact, I recall Jeralt being just as forthright in himself so many years ago." She looks to Jeralt with an amused look.

Jeralt purses his lips, possibly in embarrassment, like a mature adult morbidly haunted by his wannabe bad boy past.

Leonie lets out a shaky laugh. I-I didn't know. Thank you, Your Grace."

Rhea then turns to Kira, making the girl feel like she's forced on the spotlight.

"As for you. I have heard of your valiant efforts from both Alois and Damien. What is your name?"

'Kay... don't panic. Just... same intro as always. Ahem... Ahehem!

"It is pleasure to meet you, Archbishop Rhea." Kira greets with a humble bow. "I am known as the Konpeki Katana. Acting Lieutenant of the Blade Breakers."

Did my best to talk as ssssslllloooooowwww as I could on my title. Hope ya caught it.

"You were asked for your name, not your title." Seteth is sharp with his words. "I must also insist that your mask must be removed when speaking to the Archbishop."

Kira sucks in a small dose of air as she becomes paralyzed in fear.

Crap! Okay... don't panic... worst case if I do hafta take off the mask, maybe I can... no the markings... maybe I can lose to ponytail and have my bangs cover my eyes and markings? Just gotta go on full on shinobi on it! Agh, but if I do that, I'll look all suspect 'n stuff! Just hafta be smooth and fluid, see if my skills as a massage practitioner can integrate to-

"That won't be possible, I'm afraid." Jeralt breaks the silence, his cool resolve not fading one bit.

All eyes are on the seasoned mercenary as he begins to spin his story.

"When I first met her, my Lieutenant has been hunted by unsavory individuals. Keeping her face and true name a secret is not only for her safety but for the safety of those around her."

Kira reinforces Jeralt's accurate claim by fully kneeling on the floor, even though her nation's custom may be alien to that of Fodlan's.

"Please understand I mean no disrespect, Archbishop Rhea, however, I must insist that my mask must remain worn."

Better say yes, lady! Takes a lot to have me kowtow like this!

A few tense seconds pass before the silence is broken.

"That will not be an issue." Rhea gives her verdict. "You are permitted to adorn your mask and keep your name secret. Though I do hope, in time, that your trust will be earned to allow such secrecy be unfounded."

Kira slightly gazes up at the Archbishop and detects no trace of resentment or distrust. She feels fortunate, but very surprised that she, a newcomer and a mercenary, would be given special treatment like this.

"I thank you." Kira offers, rising to her feet.

"No." Rhea shakes her head. "From the bottom of my heart, it is I should be thanking you, all of you, for saving the students of the Officers Academy."

Leonie beams from the high praise while Jeralt pouts and looks away.

"Jeralt," Rhea turns to the Captain. "You are aware of what I have to say, do you not?"

An unrestrained sigh falls from Jeralt's lips. "You want me to rejoin the Knights of Seiros, do you?" He tactfully assumes. "Won't say no, but..."

Kira is quick to note that Rhea looks slightly hurt by his words. "Your apprehension stings." She coolly admits, though traces of disappointment are sprinkled on her words. "I had expected Alois would have already ask this of you."

Man, I'm amazed that she's takin' this all in stride. Guess the Chief knows how'da... wai-wha...?

Seteth then whispers something in Rhea's ear and she responds just as silently, though appearing slightly perturbed. Who would have thought that her own advisor would be the one to provoke the Archbishop the most.

She turns back to her audience. "I must step away for now. But expect the knights will have a word with you soon, Jeralt." She tells him. "Please listen carefully to what they have to say." She then looks to Kira and Leonie. "In the meantime, please help yourselves to our dining hall. It is the least we can offer for your service to the Church."

No, rewind, you two! Whaddya mean, 'rejoining the knights'? what's that gonna mean for us?

"Until tomorrow. Farewell." Rhea slightly tilts her head before departing the room with Seteth following not far behind her.

As the large doors closed behind them, Kira is left with one question she blurted out loud.

"What the frick just happen?"

Another chapter down.

I hope you guys are liking abridged Byleth so far. I know people are used to her being an 'emotionless' mercenary that develops feelings, so I know this is something people would expect in Byleth. There is a reason why she is like this though, if any had read my first part of The Azure Sword and The Three Houses, you might catch some hints on her history. But yeah despite her delinquent attitude, she's still a professional on the job lol.

There will be a few OCs such as Damien and Astrid.

Thanks again, please leave a review to lemme know what you guys think. Feedback will go a long way with this fanfic.
