Leonie wanders down the hall of the second floor of Garreg Mach, eager to familiarize herself with her new home for the semester.
That's right! Garreg Mach is now looking at the newest addition to the Golden Deer House!
Pride swells through her knowing that she bypasses basic protocols for a girl of stature to enter the Officers Academy.
And yet...
I don't think Lady Rhea doubted me, or my skills. Still... that went a lot better than I thought. Much better. I just hoped I gained her approval than just ask some noble to back me up with funding. Never thought she would give this sort of treatment to someone she just met.
She ponders the Archbishop's thinking.
Well... she did say that she knew Captain Jeralt. Maybe its because... no. That can't be the reason!
Leonie grunts as she shakes her head. She should be happy. In fact, she's ecstatic! But if she got into this academy because of Jeralt rather than by her own merits...
Agh! I don't need special treatment! I'm going to outshine everyone here! Including-
"Hey! Watch where you're go- OW!"
Being lost in her own thought proved careless for Leonie as she is rudely awaken to reality by bashing into someone. The impact alone is hard enough given that Leonie felt the full brunt of it on her gut. However, she conditioned herself to handle this types of punishments after being hardened from trying contracts and blunt blows that were near fatal.
In other words, its just a mere scratch for her so to speak.
Still, Leonie is mortified that she was so careless after just being admitted into Garreg Mach. And the fact that it is a small child with violet hair and nun clothing just makes it more embarrassing.
The girl has fallen onto her bottom, groaning sharply from the fall.
"S-sorry about that!" Leonie crouches down and offers her a hand.
The child's golden eyes squint open and casts Leonie a dirty look, but accepts the help nonetheless.
"Eyes on the road, lady! The girl's tongue is sharp, despite her darling stature.
Leonie is taken aback by her attitude, but chooses to be polite. "Uh, sorry... just lost in thought."
It seems a genuine apology has caught the child off guard, given her looking speechless followed by a heavy sigh.
"Its fine..." She breathes. "I'm sorry, too. Just been a busy day with cleaning and treating wounded."
That catches Leonie's attention. "Huh, wait... you're a healer?"
"Yes! I'm mostly an apprentice, but I've heard the nuns say that I might surpass them if I keep it up!" Excitement and pride swells in the girl's voice.
"Hey, that's pretty impressive!"
"Yep! I keep this up, I'm the one that's going to be running the infirmary!" The girl's face takes a sour turn. "Which needs a serious makeover..."
"Huh? Something wrong with it?"
Her question seems to have touched a nerve as the girl leaps into the air, flailing her limbs around. "Are you kidding?! The place is a pigsty! Hasn't Manuela ever heard of a spring cleaning?! And every time I thought I tidy everything up, she just HAS to leave ONE more bottle, dirty clothes, or crumbs in places that shouldn't even be there! AND don't even get me started on that mannequin! Its not supposed to be a coat hanger or throw a knife or whatever! ARGH!"
Leonie glares at the tiny child with wide eyes, completely off guard at her rampancy. Even some monks and knights who are passing by cast shocked looks. Their glares make Leonie uncomfortable.
"Uhh... are you okay?"
"I'm better now. Sorry you had to see that..." The girl looks up and flashes a smile. "Lets not worry about it right now. I'm Astrid. An apprentice to the Monastery's Physician! Its nice to meet you!"
Leonie grins albeit at a loss of the girl's change of mood. "Leonie. Captain Jeralt's First and Greatest Apprentice!"
"First and Greatest?" Astrid looks amused. "Talk about bold claims. Wait... Captain Jeralt? You mean that new guy? Tough looking, burly chested, blonde hair with a weird beard?"
"That... sounds like him..." Leonie is somewhat perturbed by some of her rudeness, even if its unintentional. "Speaking of which... can you point me in the direction of the Captain's quarters? I have some good news for him!"
Astrid frowns and shakes her head. "Sorry, but he looks like he's in a meeting with Captain Alois and some of the other knights." She gazes back at the hall where distant praises and chatter threaten to disturb the whole second floor. "I guess it's going to take longer than anyone hoped..."
Leonie pouts but shrugs it off. "Ah well... guess I'll tell him the good news later."
"Huh?"
Leonie ignores her and asks. "Hey... this is kinda awkward, but... I'm still learning my way around the place. Think you can point me to where the dorms and classrooms are?"
"Oh, that's what you mean! Well congratulations!" Astrid cheers. "And it would be my pleasure! Right now, I could use a break after cleaning up that mess. Though I can only wonder how long it'll stay presentable."
Leonie takes note of Astrid's gloomy expression and shamelessly ruffles her hair.
"Hey! HEY! EASY!" Astrid wriggles away, frantically trying to repair the damage done to her hair. "Ugh! I just finished fixing this, too!"
After Astrid casts an precious scowl and Leonie nervously chuckling, the young child takes the lead in guiding her back to the first floor.
That is when they are intercepted by a familiar masked face.
"Hey!" Leonie greets with a wave. "Done already? What did the Archbishop say?"
As Astrid looks upon the blue armored warrior with star-struck eyes, Kira neutrally answers, "She merely reminded me of my new position and that I should be better acquainted with each of the three houses."
Wow... guess Kira's already on the job huh?
"Well, tag along with us!" Leonie offers. "This little lady's gonna give us the full tour!"
Astrid grumbles and snaps, "I just said I would help you to the first floor! I REALLY need quick break in the dining hall!"
With that, Astrid motions her arm to have the two women follow her and marches ahead.
Leonie and Kira turn to each other with the former murmuring. "She's definitely a little terror."
Kira shrugs and slouches before following the child.
Leonie frowns seeing her dejected partner walk away.
I just wish she could see how this position is a big deal this is!
*FE*
"I assume you are already aware that you will be teaching here at the Officer's Academy, correct?" Rhea queries.
How do ya balance with that crown? How heavy is that thing?
"My old employer has made me aware of my new contract, Your Grace." Kira pragmatically responds. "Rest assured, I am at your service."
Like I have a choice...
Rhea grins and continues. "Then please be sure to become better acquainted with the leaders of each house. This is also a great opportunity for you to familiarize yourself with your new home. This is your first task from the Church of Seiros, and once you are finished, please come and speak to me."
"Understood, Your Grace." With a curt bow, Kira sharply turns and smartly departs from audience room.
*FE*
Well then... which batch'a punks will I be stuck with?
"You're making faces again." Leonie's sing-song tone brings Kira out of her train of thought.
Kira sighs and leans against the pillar looking out at the grounds of Garreg Mach Monastery, with dozens of students of the Three Houses frolicking the fields.
"How would'ja know? I got, Inari's smokin' mug plastered on'da me."
Leonie eyes go half lid. "Just because you have a mask, doesn't mean nobody can read you."
"Oh and YOU can, huh?"
"A perk I picked up being your partner for two years." Leonie quips, but not without a sense of pride.
"You're not gonna propose-"
"Finish that sentence and I will throw you over this ledge."
Kira snickers. "Oh, those threats REALLLLY take me back."
Oh Jill, I still remember your penis cake mishap. And with that look on your face, I knew you would throw me overboard.
Leonie's face grows stern. "Seriously, Kira, you've been given a big responsibility. So you're going to have to put up at your 'all business' act more than you're used to. And remember: whatever house you choose will look up to you to lead them. So you need to give them guidance and clarity."
"Never thought'cha be waxin' sage wisdom, Aho-chan."
Leonie hums with pride as she leaps on the ledge, kicking her feet out. "Well when you travel alongside Captain Jeralt, you pick up a thing or two."
Kira sighs and leans against the ledge, staring blankly out at the view.
"Hey," Leonie is not willing to let Kira's silence slide. "Talk to me."
Kira slams her fist against the stony surface, breath sharply through gritted teeth. Its as if the whole continent of Fodlan is trying to keep her trapped here.
"This is on the Chief..."
"You know, Captain Jeralt is not the type of guy to go back on his word." Leonie defends her former superior. "We both made an oath that we would get you back home, and we're true to our word."
"I know, I know..." Kira breathes out a defeated sigh. "But... you gotta wonder why he kept that piece of info on the DL. I mean, I'd appreciated it if we were given some kinda heads up when we camped out at Remire."
Leonie lets out an awkward. "To be fair, I don't think any of us expected to run into the Knights of Seiros."
Kira slowly cranes her head towards Leonie. "We were LITERALLY next door to the powerhouse of the whole friggin' continent! I'd be surprised if we DIDN'T run into Church cronies."
"Hey! Show some respect! They're are clients now!" Leonie socks Kira straight in her arm.
Though she cannot help but concede that her partner had a point. Even if they were in Imperial territory, it would have been hard to notice a patrol or two from the Knights of Seiros.
But she still does not understand why that she's bothered by-
"What's really eatin' away at me is... WHY the frick would they hand a teaching gig to a merc with no friggin' credentials?! I mean, seriously, do I look like I'm teaching material?!"
Leonie casts an amused smirk. "You certainly don't sound like one."
"'Zactly! This some sorta special treatment or somethin'?! Or is this the Church's way of leashing they're Captain from goin' AWOL?"
"I think you're panicking way too much about all this. Don't I need to remind you that you saved a bunch of students of the officers academy? Not to mention the three future rulers of Fodlan?"
Kira hangs her head in defeat. "Guess that slipped my mind."
"Gee I wonder why..."
You saved people and what's your reaction when you get a nice reward? 'These people are going to something awful to us!' I think you need another vacation, Kira...
"Still I wonder-"
"Hey! Isn't it that mercenary you've been talking about Claude?"
That happy-go-to feminine voice causes Kira to wince.
Please don't tell me that's a Gyaru... By the love of the gods PLEASE!
Kira and Leonie look over the ledge to see Claude von Riegan, future leader of the Leicester Alliance, leisurely waltzes towards them with both hands casually resting behind his head. He also seems to have company in tow as a cheerful looking girl with long pink twin tails skips behind him humming at random.
"You're gonna have to be more specific, Hilda." Claude's voice has a cheeky ring to it. "From where I'm standing, they're two mercenaries up there, and I did happen to mention both of them."
Leonie lets out a frustrated sigh. Its clear that they're here to see The Konpeki Katana herself.
Although its petty, despite being with Jeralt longer, Kira's skill and reputation are leagues ahead of her. For Leonie, being in someone's shadow can feel unbearable at times.
"You're Grace." Kira is already prim and proper at the sight of Claude.
Leonie rolls her eyes.
Sometimes she takes her alter-ego too seriously.
Claude acknowledges her with a playful wink. One that makes Kira blush underneath her mask.
"Scored some sort of mystery gig here, huh?" The future duke directs his attention to Kira. "Wow, talk about making a great first impression."
I still dunno why I'm bein' punished with this job?
"That is very kind of you." Kira curtly responds.
Hilda frowns. "Wow... talk about being stiff to a T! You know you can at least try to loosen up?"
Oh no... she's totally a Gyaru...
Leonie expels a humorless chuckle. "She's... committed to her job."
"Huh, guess that makes sense." Hilda shrugs. "Oh, Hilda Valentine Goneril is my name, and the big shot next to me is..."
"Relax! They already know who I am." Claude's eyes ominously narrow. "Or do they? It'd be unfortunate if they forgot who I was already. Something like that would need a much needed... correction." He then lets out a lighthearted chuckle. "Relax! Relax! Sorry, just wanted to see if I can get a reaction out of both of you. Geeze not so much as a tremble!"
Claude's words ring true as Kira and Leonie are too grizzled for those types of threats.
"Ummm... anyway, will the two of you be joining the Knights of Seiros?"
Kira turns to Leonie, non verbally giving her permission to take over.
"I actually signed up for the Officers Academy. I'll be joining the Golden Deer house."
"Wait you?!" Hilda's eyes grow wide as saucers. "But... you're that mercenary that defeated that Kingdom House heir in jousting tournament, right?!"
Kira smirks recalling that duel.
Not sure I'd label it a duel. What we call it where I'm from is called 'total asskicking!' Still that was pretty friggin' funny. Tita really made the poor kid run away like a little hoe!
"Hehe..." Leonie lets out a nervous laugh. "Well actually- OOF!"
Kira silences her with a sharp elbow to her gut to save her glory. Realizing her potential error, Leonie changes tactics. "I just expected more of a challenge I guess."
"Woooooooowwww... Amazing!" Hilda looks awestruck.
"Hehe, my friend, with someone with your skills, I'm sure we have a lot to talk about!"
Leonie perks up, boosted by the recognition of her deeds. "It'd be an honor!"
Claude then returns his attention. "As for you... weellll... lets just say you definitely piqued my interest. Like you have some deep dark secret you want to keep from the rest of us."
I'm startin'da think you're not as cool as I thought.
"Meh, ah well! What's life without a little mystery, huh? How about we spend the next year or so learning about each other little by little. Sound like a plan?"
Nice save... Very nice save.
"I have no issue with those terms, Your Grace."
Claude frowns. "This is going to be tougher than I thought." His grin quickly reappears. "Well... how about I give you two the tour of our home away from home. I'm talking about our illustrious Golden Deer House, where the deer are just as majestic and... golden as ever? Is that a good introduction? Uh... little help Hilda?
"Yeeaaah... sorry Claude, you're on your own on that one." Hilda rejects his call for aid. "But sure thing! I just have one teeny tiny request for the both of you."
That catches both girl's attention.
"Can either of you jump from down from that distance! I think you can! Given how you both are tough and awesome mercenaries that you are."
That earns a scowl from Claude. "Don't try to push your luck, Hilda. Being a seasoned mercenary doesn't automatically mean one can just-"
A grunt and a determined cry is heard as Leonie fearlessly leaps from the ledge and lands with a roll. She rises to her feet with a proud smirk on her face.
"Got anything tougher?"
Both Golden Deer members are amazed by her fearlessness. But Hilda looks particularly astonished as if she genuinely didn't think either of them would take up her dare.
"Ehh... that's an amazing feat, but... you don't actually have to-"
All three are completely caught off guard when Kira nimbly hops over the ledge and lands with the grace and fluidity as one depicted from a knight in a story book.
She turns to Hilda. "I trust you are satisfied, My Lady?"
Hilda gazes at her with awe-struck eyes. "You're like a lady-knight! So graceful!"
Leonie looks away with an annoyed look. If only they'd scratch the surface of Kira's 'chivalrous' exterior.
With the flashy demonstrations concluded, Claude takes the initiative and leads the group to the class home to the Golden Deer House.
*FE*
"Well here we are!" Claude declares proudly in a melodramatic fashion before casually stating, "This is our home away from home. You'll love it with us! We're not as... difficult as the other two."
Standing outside the grand entrance of the Golden Deer Classroom, Kira is dreading the fact that she has to acquaint herself with not only students of this house, but the others from the two remaining houses.
Leonie, on the other had, is eager to seize the initiative and ventures inward. This leaves Kira alone with the future leader of the Leicester Alliance.
"Go on, you can ask. Any of the Golden Deers catch your attention?"
Kira has her attention back on Hilda, who aside from looking and acting like those stereotypical popular Western girls, recalls her surname somewhere.
The pink twin-tailed student seems to be engaging in a one-sided conversation with a withdrawn looking girl with shining sliver hair wrapped into an elegant bun.
"May I ask about Ms. Hilda, Your Grace?"
Claude looks weary from all the formalities. "Not even gonna wind down just a bit, huh? Gee I heard you're were all business, but this is something else!"
I'm... just gonna take that as a compliment.
"Well, anyways... where do I start? Well... Hilda is the only daughter of Duke Goneril. I hear her father and brother coddle her quite a bit."
Goneril... Goneril... Wait GONERIL?! Like Holst Goneril?! I hadda feelin' the pink hair wasn't just at random!
Claude carries on. "If you look up 'lazy' in a dictionary, her picture won't be there, because she never got around to submitting it."
I'm amazed you even know what a dictionary is. Still talk about a polar opposite!
"Oh and the one who's ear is getting bend by Hilda? That's Marianne, Margrave Edmund's daughter and... thaaaat's... pretty much I know about her."
Oh gee, please don't tell me she's that sorta person...
"She doesn't interact much with others, so I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of folks here haven't even heard her speak."
Taking Claude's unsettling words into account, Kira enhances her occipitals and zooms in on Marianne's gloomy features and see something distinct underneath her mud brown eyes.
Does this chick even sleep?! She looks like she's seen a horror flick and hasn't catch some shuteye since!
"Heh, looks like your partner's already settling just fine."
Kira shifts her attention to the right with Leonie leaning against a desk taking the initiative in what must seem a lively conversation with a hulking figure of a burly man.
Pffft... wow... He looks like the love child of Dian Wei and Xu Zhu... Yeah, I can totally see it!
"Oh don't worry! Raphael may look like you're scary neighborhood bruiser, but he's actually the most cheerful guy you'll ever meet. His passions are eating, training and... actually that's about it." Claude mood turns sullen. "He comes from a merchant family, but I heard his parents died in an accident. Guess its safe to say he's had it hard growing up."
Oh... well there goes my chance to make fun of the guy... maybe later when I'm in the mood again.
"That. Sounds. Amazing!" The deep booming voice belonging to Raphael bounces off the walls before escaping onto the grounds. Everyone in the class casts glares at the two making Leonie nervously chuckling. But the jolly titan is oblivious. "Were they as strong and fast as they say?!"
"Speaking of which... mind if I turn the tables for once, Teach?"
That catches Kira off guard for a moment and is initially unsure how to respond to that. Though that informal title does sink deep in her like she's latched onto a ball chain and sinking to the bottom of the sea.
"That girl, Leonie. I know the basics, skilled mercenary, Captain Jeralt's apprentice- sorry- Captain Jeralt's GREATEST apprentice, and victor over House Fraldarius's heir. But, what's she actually like?"
Kira faintly bows her head and lowly responds, "She's truly one of kind. Smart, practical, and a fast learner. The Golden Deer House will immensely benefit from her knowledge and skill."
"Wow... feels like I just stole one of the best from you guys. Kinda feel bad now."
An uncharacteristic laugh departs The Konpeki Katana's lips and boldly assures him, "No harm done, Your Grace, for The Best still has not decided which house she will instruct."
"Huh, not so modest after all huh? Guess there's more to the Konpeki Katana than the tales say?"
Although is well aware of her reputation of being a renown mercenary that is second-to-none, she can't help but be a little curious about what else the stories say about her.
Meh, not my problem.
"Pardon me!" A stern voice enters the fray as tiny yet grim looking girl with straight snow white hair and floral lavender eyes fearlessly approaches Raphael with crossed arms. "If you're going to have a decent conversation, at least have one in a proper fashion! Preferably one that is NOT causing a disturbance to others!"
"I am in agreement with Lysithea!" A young man with questionable fashion choices joins the conversation. His hand gesture hovering in front of his chin, and that bushy rose stamped to his left breast is just too awkward for Kira. But that shining purple bowl cut makes Kira's skin crawl.
"Oh! Lysithea and Lorenz Those two are a fun bunch!"
Kira could not tell if Claude's being genuine.
"May I introduce the heir to House Gloucester, Lorenz Hellman Gloucester. A bit arrogant if you ask me, and... he does fancies himself a ladies man."
I knew it... nothin' good comes from a scrub with a bowl cut. 'Specially with chicks.
"That said, deep down he's a devoted and honest guy. Though I would appreciate it if have to never hear about his noble obligations again."
For real though, what is with that claw motion you're doin'?
"And the other? Lysithea I presume?" Is quick to change gears.
Claude brightens at her query. "The Daughter of Count Ordelia, and I think she's one of the youngest student's here?"
How young exactly?! She looks like she's in junior high!
"But a word of advice? Don't EVER treat her like a child unless you want her to get angry." Claude curves a mischievous grin. "As for me, I do it on purpose. Gotta have your own fun around here, right?"
Oh, don't tempt me, bro! If I end up being stuck here for a whole school semester, I may hafta... NO! Don't talk like that! You're not outta the game yet, girl!
Lastly, Claude directs his attention to a reserved young man with sandy blonde hair and spectacles. Kira can see him looking over what look like a canvas with a paint brush and wishes to be discreet about it.
"Ah there he is! Thought I was missing someone! The one trying to act all inconspicuous and failing miserably at it? That's Ignatz."
Another bowl cut? He may not be the precious bean he makes himself oughta be.
"He's the second son of a Merchant Family, but with his brother inheriting that family business, he's training to become a knight."
"He does not appear keen on the prospect."
"Hah! An astute observation! That's likely because he doesn't even want to be one. Then again, I guess he just wants to make his parents proud."
Does he wanna make 'em proud, or he just doesn't want to be disowned?
"And I think that's everyone. The best and brightest The Alliance has to offer. Oh, I'm not being snarky or anything, they're the cream of the crop if not... a little unorthodox."
Kira is tempted to ask what Claude means by 'unorthodox', but then again...
If anime has taught me anything its not pull the pin on that grenade. Just smile, nod, and pick the class that will best suit you.
"Wait is that her?!"
Kira stiffens by the cheerful cry of Raphael has to resist the urge suplex him when he charges towards her, nearly crashing into the two of them. She has to bite her tongue to resist the urge to smile at his big goofy grin.
Claude raised a good point, Raphael possesses an aura of vibrant mirth.
"Woah! That's so awesome! I never seen a mouse mask before! It looks so cool!"
You need'ta get a shirt that fits ya, pal.
"A-Actually, this mask resembles a fox, sir." Kira politely corrects him.
"No way! You mean to tell me there are foxes that look like mice?! Where?! I'd like to see one!"
Ooookkkaaay... is he talking about the mask, or about foxes lookin' like mice. Either way, you're outta luck in that department, dude.
"No Raphael. Its just a mask she made." Leonie comes to Kira's rescue. "This is the Konpeki Katana. My reliable partner and Lieutenant of the Blade Breakers!"
Kira has half a mind to correct her on being the former lieutenant of the Blade Breakers since they're now disbanded, but she fears that may sour Leonie's mood and chooses to nod.
"Oh, I've heard of her." Lysithea approaches with peaked curiosity. "You must be the skilled mercenary Claude talked about!"
"Oh she is?" Ignatz's mouth is agape. "Her reputation is known for and wide throughout Alliance! Oh, sorry! My name is Ignatz. Ignatz Victor. My parents are Alliance merchants. It truly is an honor to finally meet you!"
What does he- Oh no... please don't tell me I have a fan-club?
"And I am Lysithea von Ordelia. Please do not forget it."
Who're you again? Sorry, I've already forgot.
"Ahh so it is her? The renown mercenary." Lorenz haughtily makes himself known and goes further by collected Kira's gloved hand and gently kisses it. "Allow me to express my sincere gratitude for eradicating those repulsive beasts plaguing Gloucester territory. Thanks to you our lands prosper as well as are people."
This courteous gesture leaves Kira red as a tomato, completely powerless to form a single syllable. Throughout her life, both back in her world and in Fodlan, no one has ever had the gall to kiss her hand! She's seen t plenty of times in those cheesy anime's she use to watch when she was a child, and at times she fancied the idea of some gallant knight bestowing that honor on her.
But now...
WHAT THE FRICK WAS THAT?! I never had anyone do that to me before?! This world try'na kill me from shock?!
"Hold up? That was you?" Hilda's words somewhat free Kira from her immobilized state as she sees the pink-haired girl rush ahead with Marianne in tow. "You mean to tell me you took down five demonic beasts all by yourself?!"
Kira's first thoughts are on Leonie and see that she's giving off that jealous side glance.
"Actually," She turns back to Hilda and smoothly shifts her attention to other students as to address all of them. "Without Leonie's knowledge of the terrain, and her risking her life to bring them to me, the contract would never have been fulfilled."
Too bad we hadda pump all that moolah to pay off Chiefs debt. And if I'm remeberin' right, that's just one outta... oh I dunno, ALL the taverns 'cross the friggin' map?! Y'know I'm actually feelin' a little better the Blade Breakers are outta business.
Leonie lights up from Kira's praise.
"Wow, so that's what happened? Clever." Claude's eyes are now on the Golden Deer's newest student. "Guess we're lucky to have you then."
Leonie beams with a bright smile, swelling with pride of her contribution.
"Lucky to be here!"
"Well go ooooonnnn! Say hi!" Hilda nudges the timid girl. "Allow me to introduce... ahem!"
"M-Marianne von Edmund." The girl keeps her gaze to the floor.
"Hehe, well, as you can see, The Golden Deer House is a rowdy bunch. We're not exactly unified." Claude explains. "Nobles and commoners, the studious among the slackers. Life's never boring with us! Regardless, I hope you're looking forward to the year ahead as much as I am."
*FE*
"Wow... I don't think I never seen so many cats in one place before." Leonie takes note of the number of felines prowling the courtyard just outside the house classrooms. That along with a few adorable dogs merrily strutting around.
"That just means this Rhea chick is more twisted than she lets up." Kira grumbles keeping a sizable distance from the courtyard, threatening to hug the wall.
"Wha- HEY!" Leonie cannot believe Kira would be so bold on saying something so outlandish, especially here in the Monastery of all places.
"What?! Cats are Cao Cao, man! They're evil! Pure friggin' evil I tell ya!"
"How are- What does that- Ugh, that's not the point! Just keep your voice down, alright?"
"Oookkaaayyy..." Kira's cheeky whisper tests Leonie's patience.
Leonie wishes to change the subject. "Speaking of which... maybe this is a good chance for you to learn how to ride a horse?"
"No." Kira quickly shuts her down.
"Huh? Why's that?"
Kira purses her lips and looks down at the floor, pondering what to say. Eventually she comes to the vague answer, "Because of reasons..."
"So... you have no problem mounting that... baby behemoth back in Brigid? And you cut down the rebel's beasts no problem, but you're scared of horses and cats?"
"For the hundredth time, he was an elephant and they were tigers! Besides, why would I wanna mount? Ya seen my quads? They're sick!"
Throughout their journey together, the only time Kira has ever ridden a horse is either when Leonie or Jeralt were the ones at the reins with her in back. But the idea of her learning such a invaluable skill is one she eagerly strikes down even before both of them attempt to convince her otherwise.
And while it is true that her speed is almost unmatched, it certainly has its drawbacks.
"Look, I'm not saying you shouldn't give up on your crazy sprinting. But you can't just keep overdoing it!" Leonie furrows her brows. "Every time you do, you can barely stand!"
"Oh, please! Can'tcha be happy that I'm tryin' to test my limits? And own them?"
Leonie's eyes become half lid. "Throwing up along side the road and almost keeling over isn't pushing your limits. That's spreading yourself too thin."
Kira growls and throws a hand at Leonie, dismissing her.
"Look," The orange haired girl starts, "If you're not going to take better care of yourself, at least try to go easy on us?" She quickly adds. "Or, y'know, whatever house you choose."
"Pfft... easy for you to say, I don't even have teaching credentials."
"Well, from what I've heard, the other Professor's don't have actual combat experience. So you have an advantage right there!"
"Don't do me any favors, scrub..."
Kira's words make Leonie's temple twitch, a sign that she hit a nerve. "Look, if you're going to be sour about this, fine! Just be an ungrateful wretch!" Leonie begins storming off but not before muttering. "Sometimes I don't know why I even bother..."
Watching her partner briskly departing with steam hissing above her gives Kira an unpleasant weary feeling in her gut, numbing her from the inside. She's all too aware of why Leonie's angry. Her and Jeralt put up with her snarky attitude for so long they've grown accustomed to it. That does not mean they're not immune to it.
And from Leonie's frustration, it seems they're patience is growing thin, and is spreading thinner.
Guess I should let up more on her tryin' to drop legit wisdom on me. Least Candy Cane's snoozed out to even chew me out. But still... I don't want this...
"AH!" A terrified squeal echoes down the corridor. "Its going to be him?! Isn't it?! He's going to be our new professor! I KNOW IT!"
Kira's body stiffens from the shriek cocks her head in the direction of its origin. She can see a tiny girl with short ruffled purple hair and wide and fearful doe eyes of the matching color. Not far behind her is a strikingly handsome young man with the same hair color as Leonie's albeit somewhat lighter. From the way he's dressed, to his proper demeanor, everything about him is nothing short of pure elegance, as if he's practice it to the points its nothing short of muscle memory.
"Bernadetta, please! Do not jump so hastily to conclusions!" He cries out to her, as if he's trying to assure her. "We do not even know who our professor will be!"
"Oh, don't jinx it! Or great you did! You did it on purpose, did you! I bet you got that idea after what I just said right?! Oh... way to go, Bernie..."
What is this girl's malfunction? Am I gonna hafta keep my distance? And don't even get me started on the Disney Prince... they really do exist do they?
"EEEGH! Monster mouse! MONSTER MOUSE! AHHHHH!"
The girl know has Bernadetta, comes to a screeching halt when she spots Kira, looking up at her with pure horror in her pupils. After being petrified for only a few seconds, she finds the will to flee in the other direction only to be caught in the young man's arms.
"AAAAAHHHHH! LET ME GO! LET ME GO!"
Her constant screaming is making Kira uneasy as she notices knights, monks, and students look in her general direction with glares of suspicion while others are more dismissive.
Argh! Why's this pipsqueak gotta cause a scene?!
"Berandetta, this is no monster!" The princely gentleman frantically explains. "Our House leader owes this person a great debt!" His dark orange orbs turn to Kira. "Is that not right?"
"Indeed." Kira answers professionally with a bow. "I am the Konpeki Katana, former Lieutenant of the Blade Breakers. A pleasure to make your acquaintance, sir."
"Oh my! Such grace and elegance! It is though you are a maiden knight!"
Kiss my hand and you're relationship with the pavement will be intimate...
Releasing the girl, now sprinting away in an unknown direction, he returns the bow and begins his introduction. "I am Ferdinand von Aegir, legitimate son of the Aegir family, the Empire's most foremost house."
Oh gods, why do I get the feeling Imma be hearin' that a lot? Wait... Aegir? Nooooo... that eye sore of a Dong Zhou's kid is this? Oh buddy... I feel sorry for you down the road... I hope you get your looks from your mom. I really do...
"Are you going to join our class? Or perhaps you will be seeking employment with the knights?" Ferdinand doesn't give Kira a chance to answer as he offers out his hand. "Regardless, allow me to give you a proper tour of the monastery! It is only proper that you should become familiar with these sacred grounds!"
Piss. Off.
"You are too kind, My lord." Kira evenly replies. "However, I assure you that I am confident that I can familiarize myself with monastery on my own."
"Nonsense! To fend for yourself upon first arriving here? Truly disgraceful!" Ferdinand almost sounds genuinely offended. "Please, I insist!"
Oh by the- bro can't you take a friggin' hint?!
"My lord, there is no need for- AH"
Kira feels the physical barriers breached as Ferdinand reaches out for her hand and guiding her against her will.
You are NOT cut out to be a massage practitioner!
"Allow me to give you the honor of introducing you to our house! The Black Eagles, only the most renown class ever to bless Garreg Mach." Ferdinand begins to ramble. "Are you aware of the provenance of our class name? The eagle, that refers to the..."
Ugh! Now I'm startin' to wish that nervous wreck starts screamin' bloody murder right about now!
"...Hence, 'Black Eagles'! Ah, and here we are, My lady!"
Kira has been 'guided' to a class room that is almost symmetrical to the Golden Deer House, with only the flag of the Black Eagles adoring its walls.
At first glance the blue haired girl can immediately notices a sharp contrast to the loosely knit band of the Alliance students. Their attire presents a more regimental and high class ethos.
Meanin' that most, if not all, this batch are a buncha silver-spooned pencil necks.
"Huh? Strange, I cannot catch a glimpse of Edelgard." Ferdinand remarks. "Such a disgrace... especially for the heir to Adrestia's throne. Ah! I may have a lead! This way!"
Kira is yanked over to the fireplace where two students seem to be deep in concentration. The first one is pale skinned man with raven black hair covering one of his piercing yellow eyes. Kira can sense his whole presence is sinister and shrouded in in ominous mystery. The other, while dressed in a customized yet appropriate uniform, her natural tan skin, elegantly curled ponytail painted a vibrant violet, and a small mark chiseled underneath her right shining brown eye. Kira can tell right away she's not from Fodlan.
"Ahh... Ferdinand. And who is this poor soul you have in tow?"
Uhhh... I'm standin' right here, pal!
"Don't be coy, Hubert!" Ferdinand snaps. "A better question would be what has Edelgard run off to? To be absent like this is nothing short of shameful."
Kira notices the subtle twitch in Hurbert's brown, as if he's restraining himself from wringing Ferdinand by the neck. The exotic girl looks at the two before gazing at Kira with a hint of curiosity.
"Hmph... well out of pity of your ignorance, Lady Edelgard had important business to attend to. Not that I will reveal what it is. Surely you understand."
Ferdinand sighs dramatically. "If the future emperor is not present to conduct a proper tour of her own house, then I suppose it all falls to me." His mood brightens, as if he's excited by the prospect before turning to Kira. "Please excuse me, allow me to be the first to introduce two of our-"
"I am Hubert, a faithful servant of Lady Edelgard." The dreadful looking man ruthlessly cuts Ferdinand off. "I heard you have come to the aid of Her Highness. You have my most sincere thanks."
What's a neo-grunge bad boy like you doin' in a suit like that?
Hubert fluidly motions a hand to the girl beside him. "This is Petra. She has come all the way from Brigid to study in Adrestia. Back on her archipelago, she is actually a princess. In Fodlan terms she would be heir to her homeland's throne."
I hadda feelin' she's from Zhuhui. Holdup... no way... if she's a princess, she's gotta be the King's... holy... this is...
"Hello. I am called Petra." The girl is rigidly formal yet friendly with her greeting followed by a curt bow. "I am pleased to be meeting with... uh... no- uh..." She stammers nervously before carefully supplying, "I am... pleased to have met you!"
Kira is taken aback by Petra in both her mannerisms and in her skill in the common tongue. From her experiences in Brigid, or in their native tongue, Zhuhui, the people appeared reserved and suspicious of her. As understandable as their behavior was, the fear of them attacking put her on edge for quite awhile given what the people of Brigid are capable of. To met one native to Brigid- and the Princess no less- introducing herself with no hostility or animosity towards her is welcoming, but also a little shocking.
What's even more surprising is how fluent Petra is in not only the language but with the enunciations. Again, the inhabitants of the lush archipelago spoke in a variety of languages mixed into one. Kira recalls a blend of Hokkien, Malay, and Cantonese with tiny traces of Filipino. It became more mind boggling that several had their own local dialects which made speaking Brigid's language virtually impossible for her. So for Petra to virtually understand and speak English, without even a trace of a struggling accent, is truly incredible.
Kira almost envies her remembering the quagmire of having to learn English as her third language.
This is our lucky gal. Brigid's Princess in the flesh! Guess Petra's her 'western' name, but its totally her. No doubt about it!
"I am honored to make your acquaintance, Your Highness. I am the Konpeki Katana, recently employed to the Church of Seiros."
I'd just butchered it if I go lingo. I'll stick with this nightmare of a language as it is...
"Ah, I am having the honor!" Petra beams. "I am hoping to be having a better acquaintance with each other."
Yeah its a little rough, but she gets the message across pretty good.
Ferdinand grins with pride. "I meant it when I said that our house is held in the highest regard. Many of us are blessed to be the heirs of the empire in our own respective roles. I, for one, will be the future Prime Minister, hence it will be my noble obligation to guide our people to a brighter future."
Oh by the love of Yuan Shao's noble lineage, this kinda scrub chalks up a good speech. Shame he doesn't have the cajones to back it up. May the gods help the empire when he calls the shots...
"Yes, and with her majesty taking her rightful place on the throne, I'm sure your service to her will be beneficial to her rein."
Kira can't help but smirk at Hubert's indirect belittling. Though she can't help but wonder...
Last I checked the Emperor's just there to look good. The Prime Minister and his chooms are the ones callin' the shots. Wonder... nah don't matter'da me. Just... focus on lookin' cool and playing meet and greet.
"No way! That's the one who saved Edelgard? That's incredible!" A nasally voice brimming with enthusiasm cries out.
Kira turns to see short statured young man who is appears to have command an indomitable will to him. With ice blue cropped hair and matching colored eyes, Kira can see the resemblance right away.
He's Leopold's kid. Second son, I gander. Heh, he's kinda cute I'll give 'em that.
"Ahh, another dear colleague of mine!" Ferdinand's spirits brighten after Hubert's words.
"Hey there, Ferdinand." The newcomer waves before introducing himself. "The name's Caspar, by the way. Please to meet ya!"
Don't get too comfortable, kid. But ditto I guess.
"And this is my good pal Lin- Hey! Come on, say hi!"
Caspar scowls at the boy dazed out by the table. His plain green cut gives Kira the impression he's just as bland.
"Linhardt. Goodbye." He lazily raises his hand before turning his head and resting it on the table.
Dude... I totally feel ya. Sure ya don't wanna trade places though.
"Yeesh!" Caspar sighs and shakes his head. "How'd you get into the academy with those manners, Linhardt?"
Uhh... How 'bout askin' how I got this job with my luck?
"Sooo... are you a student, too?" Caspar redirects his attention to Kira. "Maybe we'll be in the same class?"
Nnnnoope!
"All I can say is that I will be employed by the Church of Seiros." Kira tactfully surmises.
"Oh, well... congrats then!" Caspar replies. "Hopefully we'll see more of each other!"
Taking his leave, Ferdinand cleverly takes his leave from Hubert and Petra to their conversation and leads Kira to a girl dreamily gazing out the window behind a desk where the instructor resides. As they drew closer, Kira can hear melodic humming from the girl's lips as she delicately combs her lustrous brunette hair with a lavish comb.
"Ferdie, if you're going to hover behind me, could you please have the courtesy of proper noble to warn me before you do so?"
Damn... savage.
Ferdinand looks slightly irritated with her snide remark, but he keeps his composure. "I assure you Dorothea, I mean no disrespect. I am simply fulfilling my obligation by showing our guest around our esteemed officers Academy. I figure a good starting point to introduction her to every Black Eagle here! Hopefully you'll indulge me for a moment."
Kira jolts slightly seeing the girl's face as it beams with a dazzling and larger than life aura. The type that draws everyone to her. The type that she needs to watch out for her.
I'm not crazy about the jewelry and bracelets, but somehow she pulls it off. And that cap certainly spices up her charm.
The girl's green eyes widen with fear upon glancing on Kira. No doubt startled by her eerie mask. To her credit, the girl known as Dorothea quickly regains her composure and flashes a bright smile.
"Well you... certainly don't have a familiar face." She skillfully states. "What brings you here?"
Bad luck... mind stealin' some of it from me?
"My apologies for startling you, Miss." Kira says graciously. "I must ask for your forgiveness for my... first impression."
"Oh..." Again, Dorothea is taken aback by her refined mannerisms but appears genuinely impressed. "My, my. And they say chivalry is dead. Ahh well no harm done." Her cheeks burn a faint red, as if she's being swept off her feet.
"As for the answer to your question," Kira keeps herself on the straight and narrow. "The Church has employed my services and I will be stationed here for the time being. I apologize, but I cannot say more."
"Oooh... mysterious way to phrase that. I get the feeling we'll be very well acquainted." She flashes a wink. "Oh, getting ahead of myself I see. My name is Dorothea. Before I joined the academy I was a member of an opera company in the very heart of the Empire. You should hear me sing sometime."
A diva? That explains it... she may sound like an airhead, but one wrong move and she'll even have the whole empire's heart in her hands. Definitely need to watch out for this one...
"That is no exaggeration. You may already be aware of this, but her angelic voice has granted her the title of the Mystical Songstress in Enbarr. Its so beautiful that even the most stalwart warrior would shed a tear."
"Hehe, I've seen you've grown adept at flattery, Ferdie." Dorothea's remark has a sweet but sharp edge to it. "Please, give me some more."
Pfft... Ferdie. Dang... this chick's merciless. Remind me not to get into a lip fight with her.
Ferdinand lets out a weary sigh. "We... will have to postpone that for another time, Dorothea. May I ask if you've seen Edelgard anywhere?" He asks.
"Oh? Our new friend is leaving us so soon? A shame." Dorothea feigns her disappointment but instantly brightens up. "Well... if you're looking for Edie, I think I've heard her scampering about in the reception hall. She had this serious scowl on her face though. I know its hard for you, but try not to make her any more sour than she already is. I'm sure you'll manage well enough."
Gee this sounds personal. I gettin' the vibe these punks aren't all buddy buddy.
"Your concern is appreciated, though I wish you have more faith in me than that." Ferdinand sighs. "Regardless, we have our destination! Come, my friend!"
Without warning, Ferdinand jerks Kira's hand, tugging her out of the classroom with Dorothea looking mildly concern.
As they carry on, Ferdinand decides to indulge Kira about the history, the entrenched politics of the Empire and the prominent noble families and their roles in Adrestia. Topics the Kira is already aware of, but her 'tour guide' seems to oblivious to notice.
Okay... time to repress another memory... I... am at... Orchard Road. ORCHARD ROAD!
*FE*
Disappointment and frustration. That is what is fuming in the Imperial Princess of all the Adrestian Empire. Edelgard pinches the bridge of her nose as her elbow rests on the table processing this information.
"What was that woman thinking?" Edelgard mutters to herself. "Making a mercenary, of all people, the new professor?"
"I knew I saw you acting all sullen." A familiar voice reaches Edelgard's ears.
Her brows furrow at this interruption, but as she looks up to see Dimitri approaching her with a softened expression, her sour mood softens. Her mood improves further when she detects delicious sweets wrapped within napkins. Her mouth waters at the custard oozing from the treat, impatient to gorge on it.
"I'm sorry. I know its not your preferred desert, but I hope it suffices." Dimitri tells her, extending both hands for her to choose.
Acting on impulse, Edelgard swipes the one on the left and tugs the wrapped sweet close to her chest, frantically scanning the Reception Hall.
"Peace, El." Dimitri chuckles. "I do not think that others have noticed. Though, even if they did, I do not think you have to worry much. In fact, I think they would find it a refreshing change of peace."
Edelgard's scowl returns. "Did you come all this way just to dictate how I should act?"
"I've actually come just to chat, if that will suffice?"
Knowing that ulterior motives are not the style of Faerghus's crown prince, Edelgard sighs and nods, conceding to him.
"What's troubling you?" Dimitri asks, showing no reserve in his concern for her.
"Nothing troublesome. Although..." She pauses, pondering on how to say what's on her mind. "Given that the... former professor fled from the sight of mere ruffians, I felt confident that Professor Jeritza would be the one to shoulder that responsibility. Its the most logical choice. But now..."
"Do you not trust the mercenary to carry that responsibility?" Dimitri asks, but carries on seeing the crowned princess's cheeks are stuffed with the baked treat. "If I recall, you seemed impressed by her skills in battle! So much so that you even offered her a proposal to have her serve you."
"Hah, I recall you making a similar proposition."
"I won't deny it. And as much as I hate to admit it, we may have been too tactless with her." Dimitri shamefully admits.
Edelgard is not so phased. "Are you really going to take his side?!"
Dimitri becomes flustered. "I-It's just an assumption!" He skillfully changes the course of the subject. "Regardless, I have faith in our new Professor. While she may lack conventional knowledge and the proper academics, she's bound to make up for in her practicality and experience."
"True." Edelgard concedes, though she does not look fully convinced. "I... merely felt content with Jeritza filling that role."
Dimitri's brow twitches, curious on the crowned princess's mindset. "Is there a particular reason why you hold Professor Jeritza in high regard?"
Silence and no eye contact serves as Dimitri's answer, but before either of them could speak,
"Greetings! You must be that new professor! Pleasure to meet you!" A cheery voice sounds off close to the entrance.
The two heirs turn to see the new professor walking hand in hand with Ferdinand von Aegir as they are conversing with a rather unorthodox Knight of Seiros. They've come across him occasionally, and concluded that he stands out from his more stark and tempered brethren with his joyful aura and friendly attitude.
Its a shame they don't even know his name.
"Wait..." Ferdinand is in disbelief as he looks at the Gatekeeper and back at the young woman. His head spirals out of control until he blurts out, "You're the new professor?!"
*FE*
Well that cats outta the bag... and could'ja lower the volume?
Kira averts her gaze, as she feels the morbid sensation of people staring at her.
"Damien managed to brief me on the situation. Its an honor to meet you!" The Gatekeeper cheerfully continues. "As for me, my job is stand at this glorious entrance and leisurely watch over the comings and goings of everyone. Get people to put a smile on their face, you know?"
Ferdinand frowns. "Forgive me, but I do not think that is the proper conduct for an esteemed knight of Seiros."
At this rate, I might as well take a shot every time this knob says 'esteemed'.
"Er..." He quickly stammers, desperate to rephrase himself. "By that I mean... vigilantly guard this entrance with my very life! To levity whatsoever." He lets out a nervous chuckle before straightening himself out. "As of now, nothing to report."
You are WAY too nice for this line of work, kid.
Fortunately for Kira, she is saved by the arrival of two familiar faces with Dimitri offering her to join them and Edelgard shooing away a stunned Ferdinand. With probably the most annoying student dismissed from his duties as a tour guide, Kira feels a small sense of relief.
Never thought I'd be happy to be with the Kanto-jin. But... guess there's a first for everythin' huh? After all, she did scare him off. 'Sides, I scored by hangin' with the friggin' Crown- holy crap his hair's like ramen noodles..."
"Its good to see you again." Dimitri joyfully says to Kira. "I trust your introduction to the monastery is... overall a pleasant one." His tone hints at the awkward moment with Ferdinand dragging her around against her will.
I'm goin' to be dronin' my sorry ass here for a whole school year, how is any of this pleasant?
"I assure you, my tour guide has been the only... exception." Kira coolly replies. "Regardless, its an honor to meet you again, Your Highness."
Dimitri smiles and chuckles. "You are too kind. You must excuse him, I've met him only a few times and he means well, but... I fear he... lacks the insight on others feelings. In any event, both of us have been rude for not properly introducing ourselves." He glances up at Edelgard who takes her seat across from them.
"We weren't in a position for proper introductions." Edelgard sternly reminds him before her stark expression fades. "Regardless, now that we're here, there's no excuse for us not to do so."
Ramen noodle and the Kanto-jin. All I need to know.
Edelgard, as expected, takes the initiative and introduces herself. "My name is Edelgard von Hresvelg, the princess and heir apparent to the Adrestian Empire." She leans in and stares intently at Kira, much to her discomfort. "I wonder if you'll be task with leading the Black Eagles."
"Don't rush her, Edelgard!" Dimitri chastises. "Please forgive her. With you being the Academy's newest professor, our curiosity and hopes cannot helped but be peaked. Speaking of which, where are my manners?" He clears his throat. "I am Dimitri Alexandra Blaiddyd, crown prince of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus."
What is she hiding under that napkin? 'Slike she's tryna keep something suspect down low. Annnnd she's not doin' a good job at it.
"Of course, at the Academy I am merely a student of the Blue Lions House, uh, the House that represents the Kingdom of course."
Ahh yeah, guess I gotta check out another house, huh? Maaaaaan... do I hafta?
"I'm sure we would all benefit greatly from your teaching and guidance." He stammers and hastily supplies, "Ah, if you choose to teach the Blue Lions of course!"
"In any case, welcome to Garreg Mach Monastery." Edelgard says with a level voice. "Given the Ferdinand took it upon himself to... be of help, I trust you have been introduced to the Black Eagles?"
Yeah you guys are a clustermuck of a mess! Wonder how long you guys will function?
"Indeed, Your Highness." Kira replies. "His Grace Aegir has kindly introduced me to each prominent student that represents Adrestia."
"I see..." Edelgard sighs and pinches her nose, not hiding her disappointment. "At least you received an introduction, though I wish I were present to make sure things went smoothly."
Kira takes note of her frustration and cannot help but sympathize with the crowned princess.
Although I kinda doubt it, maybe if she's been callin' the shots, I'd be not write off the Black Eagles as a pack'a jokers. And judgin' by that sourpuss frown guess this isn't the first time the Disney Prince drove her nuts.
"Don't be too hard on yourself." Dimitri tries to comfort her. "We only found out about all of this a few moments ago."
"That's no excuse." Edelgard ceases his pity toward her. "If the Black Eagles continue with this sort of misconduct, it is truly unacceptable! Especially for one who aims to be Adrestia's next Prime Minister!" Her words turn into bitter muttering. "Then again, what can you expect from fools like him?"
Gee... chill, girl.
"Please excuse me. I should be off." Edelgard is quick to rise from her seat and briskly marches off without looking back.
Kira hears a gloomy sigh from Dimitri. "Wish she would be less of a hard nose..." He quickly gasps and stutters when Kira notices his words. "U-uh, please don't pay me no mind! I-I just merely think aloud sometimes. Umm... w-with your permission, I wish to introduce you to the Blue Lions!"
After the last house wearin' me out, I should take a hard pass on that. Buuuut... I know better than to say 'no' to someone silver spoon chump. 'Sides, he did ask politely...
"It would be an honor, Your Highness." Kira responds with the correct answer, as ever.
Dimitri flashes a warm smile. "I appreciate it, but please there's no need to be so formal. To be honest, its a little awkward."
With Dimitri offering Kira his hand, she hesitates by the gesture, but seeing that this is merely out of goodwill, she accepts and the two depart from the Reception Hall.
*FE*
Well... hear we are back in the courtyard with a buncha idiots and those wicked furballs...
Before arriving back outdoors into the courtyard, Kira has planned ahead and subtly maneuvered herself to stroll close the wall, far from the cats and dogs playing around the field.
Dimitri, clearly with his mind on other matters such as the introducing the famed mercenary to the Blue Lions, was oblivious to her cleaver scheme. Although it may seem mundane compared to other tactics on a more epic scale, Kira's quick understanding of the terrain, quick movement, and the mindset of Dimitri as well as others, she strategically moved herself into a favorable position: Close to the wall far away from the cats with the Prince Dimitri as her meat shield against those small feline monsters.
"Umm... please excuse me for prying, but I'm compelled to ask."
Dimitri's words clearly reveal his soon to be query. Kira notices his apprehensive countenance and the frequent eye contact and looking away. It all points to one conclusion.
He's gonna ask about the mask.
"Please ask." Kira assures him. "I will answer your question to the best of my ability."
"Of course, thank you." Dimitri pauses before shamefully continuing. "Forgive me, but do you... adorn your mask often?"
Hit the nail on the coffin!
"My mask is often worn when in public and in the presence of my clients." She answers truthfully, though she feels he may not be fully satisfied with that. "However, the main reason is that should others see my face, it would prove unsettling for them."
Dimitri blinks. "Unsettling?"
"To put it simply, Your Highness, I sustained... severe injuries that would have proved fatal under normal circumstances. Thankfully, my body has been... reconstructed. Though I fear even removing my gloves, never mind my mask would make others... troubled."
Crap! Did I say to much? Wait, why did I even say that?! That info's s'pposed to be all black ink!
Much to Kira's surprise, Dimitri didn't seem bothered by her words. If anything, he now possesses a hint of regret for being too nosy. That makes Kira feel guilty for killing the mood.
"I'm sorry." He lowly mutters. "I... it was not my intention to pry..."
Kira coolly shakes her head. "Think nothing of it, Your Highness. I always assumed it would cause discussion."
Dimitri is not appeased by this. "Even so, it was never my intention to bring up horrid memories." His brows furrow. "Though... I fear that others will be wondering about it for quite awhile now, be they be up front, or just decide to gossip."
Kira purses her lips in frustration, though she admits that he's not exactly wrong.
"I wish there is something I could do to dispel these issues, but I fear I would only do more harm than good, sadly."
Dang... way'da get deep on me, king.
"I assure you that you do not need to worry about me." Kira affirms. "I am no stranger when it comes to attempted character assassinations."
Dimitri blinks in shock. "I-I'm sorry?!"
Kira continues, a little arrogance in her voice. "Still, as if they have possessed actual skill to perform it properly."
"I-I see." The Crown Prince of Faerghus is taken aback. "Well, that is comforting..."
Kira fears her confidence may have backfired and made the mood awkward, if not unsettling.
Geez, sounded like I offed 'em!
"With your permission, Your Highness, may I hear a little more about you?" She asks, thoughtfully adding. "From my time in the Kingdom, your people hold you in the highest regards. Yet... I wish to know you as a potential student and not merely as the heir to the throne."
Again, Dimitri is caught off guard.
"Me? Oh... umm..." He stammers, biting his lip. "Please forgive me... its difficult to open up on the spot, don't you think?" His demeanor becomes solemn as he speaks with a low voice. "I'm afraid my story has not been a pleasant one. I hope that doesn't color your view of me, but I understand that cannot be helped."
Huh... smart money says Tragedy of Duscur, but wonder what he meant by the 'color view' bit. Still, that got dark real quick...
"Aha, here we are!"
Dimitri leads Kira to the entrance with blue banners embedded with a majestic lion flanking the open doors. Kira becomes nostalgic thinking of the Singapore's national animal, the ethereal Merlion. As they enter, Kira finds an atmosphere that is in sharp contrast to the other houses. While the Golden Deer appears disorganized and the Black Eagles dysfunctional, the Blue Lions appear to look like to role model students. Not only to they appear studious and curious to learn, but also possess innocent and good-natured souls that Kira thought to be nothing short of a fairy tail.
Wow... talk about zero to a hundred...
"Please feel free to be better acquainted with everyone here." Dimitri politely tells her. "Of course, if there's anyone you wish to have me introduce, you only need to-"
"Oh! Your Highness! Over here!" An upbeat young man's voice calls out. "Is that her? The famous mercenary?"
The voice originates from a young boy around Caspar's height. However, unlike the fiery and impulsive Black Eagle with the well-cropped haircut, this Blue Lion has smooth messy ashen hair, sweet wide bright green eyes, and the excitement of a young child. The man, Kira assumes he is another student, next to the boy is a tank of a man of dark mahogany skin and grey hair neatly trimmed to resemble something of a seasoned military officer.
Those dark green eyes and tough guy look certainly fit the bill.
Dimitri lets out an amused chuckle. "Well then... looks like the latter it is then. Shall we?"
Kira nods and approaches the two with the Crown Prince.
"Good to see you, too, Ashe." Dimitri greets the ashen haired boy. "Yes, this is her. And it has come to my attention that she will..." He pauses and gazes over at Kira before continuing. "Be working with the Church for some time. Though I would appreciate it if you don't bother her with trivialities."
"Oh no! I-I wouldn't!" Ashe assures him before turning to Kira and bows with a little too much effort behind it. "Its an honor to finally meet you! I-I'm Ashe! I will be studenting here! Ah! I mean I'm just a student here!"
Oh no... I DO have a fanclub! Still... he doesn't sound like he's the type to be all 'NOTICE ME, SENPAI!' Plus he's kinda cute.
"A-anyways, this here is Dedue." Ashe is quick to put the titan beside him in the spotlight. "He serves Prince Dimitri."
Kira finds Dedue's stature quite imposing.
"I have heard that you have rescued His Highness." Dedue robotically states offering her a formal bow. "Words cannot express my gratitude."
I take that back, you look like that disciplinary committee masochist from that vintage anime... crap what wuzzit called again? The one with the talking sailor uniform? Ah forget it...
"Should you ever require my strength, please know that I will hasten to repay this debt."
"Think nothing of it, sir." Kira replies. "I was fortunate enough to ensure His Highnesses safety."
"Goodness! It seems she's taking a page out of your book, Dedue." Dimtri lightheartedly remarks. "Forgive me. Poor joke aside, Dedue is a kind young man underneath that taciturn exterior."
Dedue merely expels a monotone hum, neither praising nor condemning Dimitri's kind words. Merely acknowledging them.
"As for Ashe here, he's the adoptive son of Lord Lonato of Castle Gaspard."
Ashe nods vigorously. "I heard you were there about a year ago! My adoptive father holds you in very high regards!"
Oh, yeah! That guy! He offered the gang and I some grub and a place to chill for a bit. He... also gave us that creepy tour of the Western Church later on though. Can't blame Otchan for bailin' like that.
"Ah, I recall. Please give my warmest regards to his Lordship. And my most sincerest thanks for offering us refuge from the harsh cold."
"Think nothing of it! He would do it again, knowing him!" Ashe gleefully says. "But I will relay that message to him the first chance I get!"
"Alright then. Sorry to do this, Ashe, but I must borrow her for the time being." Dimitri informs him before turning to Dedue. "And yes, I will be sure to take it easy later on in the day, you don't need to worry."
"So long as His Highness does not forget, I will be at ease."
With a warm farewell, Dimitri leads Kira way from the two but are quickly stopped by a tall and confident looking student with spiky vibrant orange hair. And Dimitri immediately becomes apprehensive jerking over at Kira and the new arrival.
"Well, well, well, Your Highness! I never knew you had it in you. Having a mysterious, and, I assume radiant beauty with you!" His suave words have the opposite effect on Kira.
'You assume'? Do you WANT to have your nutsack made concave, 'cuz I have definitely done worse for less!
"I am Sylvain Jose Gautier. If you ever wish to say hi or... whatever you desire, know that my door is always open." Sylvain reaches out for Kira's hand, but before she could even withdraw them behind her back, for the imbecile's safety, Dimitri roughly swats it away.
"I am... not even going to attempt to tell you how far you've gone Sylvain." His voice steams with frustration. "Now that you're done being rude, please... just go away..."
"Geez! Now who's being rude." Sylvain unveils his quick witted talent. "And I should have you know that I am always the perfect gentlemen when it comes to ma- AH!"
Sylvain is unaware and woefully unprepared by a hand jerking the edge of his vulnerable ear, yanking him away from the two. Kira eyes Sylvain's captor and see's that it is a young woman with neatly combed long blonde hair, prim and proper in every angle. Her aqua eyes are mixed with anger and morbid embarrassment.
"Funs over. Go wait in the corner and don't move if you value your life."
"Really?" Sylvain gives her in incredulous look. "Don't you think you should save that talk for..." He stops himself even before the girl gives him a chilling stare, and immediately complies. "Never mind! Forget I said anything!"
Both Dimitri and the girl give out a heavy sigh.
"Thank you for your help Ingrid." He says before directing his attention to Kira. "I am so sorry you had to experience that. As you can see, Sylvain is a bit of a... ahem... skirt chaser. Pardon my bluntness. I speak to him of it often, but it doesn't seem to help... That said, as someone who has known him since my childhood, he's a person who highly regards his friends."
"Shame the same can't be said for his behavior." The girl know as Ingrid mutters in disappointment. "Ah, my apologies! Prince Dimitri has told me all that you have done for him. As a citizen of Faerghus, I thank you."
'Why do you wear such a repulsive mask? Those dark slants of eyes glaring at my body, wanting to undress me! Control me! Oh, the pain and agony of even adorning such a ornament! Its almost too much to bear! Yes! Take me! Torture me! Make me your masked puppet! Parade me around these holy grounds as I sin them with my-' okay I can't... this chick is way to polite for me to even finish that line of thought.
Her bow and mannerisms make Kira lose interest of finishing that infamously lewd reference from a rather comedic anime.
Dimitri smiles. "Ingrid is Count Galatea's daughter and another treasured friend of mine. She is diligent, industrious, and principled. In truth, she's more knightly than most knights you'll ever meet."
Ingrid blushes and looks down at the floor grinning. "Your words bring me honor, Your Highness." She quickly regains her composure. "As I was saying, you have my sincerest thanks. And... may I say it is truly an honor to you at last! Your deeds, etiquette, even your very presence! They have inspired me to become the knight I wish to be!"
I inspired you...?
"Oh- well thank you. The honor is mine." Kira does not know how to respond to that. "Forgive me. I'm afraid your kind words leave me at a loss for mine."
"No! No!" Ingrid panics and waves her hands. "Please! None are necessary! Just to see you- ah, meet you! Just to meet you is more than enough to bless my day! I-I mean make my day! Hehe... please forgive me."
Ingrid instantly sinks into her shoulders and looks down.
"So this is the one I've heard so much about. The Honorable and Mighty Konpeki Katana." A low broody voice makes itself known.
A young man with a neat raven black bun and sharp copper eyes appears beside Ingrid. "People and the... Prince, said that you are highly skilled. Hmph, If that's the case, I hope you can back those claims when I have the chance to spar with you, and beat you."
What crawled up your ass? Wait... this dude rings a bell, but where at...?
"Ugh! Must you speak of fighting right away, Felix?" Ingrid berates his boorish behavior.
Felix... Felix...
Dimitri's smile falters. "Felix is... yet another friend from my childhood."
Felix's stark expression and Dimitri's pained frown hints that it is more complicated than that.
"He is also the heir to House Fraldarius. Don't mind his behavior and sharp tongue. He may be rough around the edges but deep down, he's a good guy."
What... Pfft... HAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh wow! You got owned by Aho-chan so friggin' bad! Ooohhhhh... Oh you're too precious!
"I thank you for your invitation, sir. I look forward to our first match." Kira says with a curt nod.
Ingrid stares at her in awe, while Felix merely grunts and walks away.
"Felix! Don't you walk away like that!" Ingrid cries out. She frantically bows and anxiously says, "Please forgive him! Thank you again! And I-I look forward to seeing more of you! I-I mean meeting more of you! Ah- No! That's even worse! Argh! I swear when I get my hands on the both of you, I will..."
As she watches Ingrid storm off towards the two boys from earlier, Kira feels a warm feeling in her non-beating heart that she alone inspired a count's daughter to become a knight of chivalrous character.
"Looks like Faerghus thinks highly of you as well." Dimitri proudly states.
With an eventful pitstop of the tour concluded, Dimitri leads Kira to two girls that happen to look too precious to be in the officers Academy.
Both doe eye, pure and adorable looking, they could not be more apart at the same time. The first, a light blonde girl with her long ponytail flung over her left shoulder, giggles as the familiar tiny orange haired student from the kitchen playfully teases her with harmless poking.
They are quick to notice the company and greet it smiles and excitement.
"Hello, Dimitri, ah, and who's this?" The first girl's voice is soft and breathy. A voice too pure for any human's lips. "You don't look familiar at all. Do you work here at the monastery?"
Liu Bei does exist in this world!
"Oh, Mercie," The tiny one interjects before Kira could answer. "I've seen her before. She's that famous mercenary that everyone's been talking about!"
"Hmmm... now that I think about it, that does sound like something you said. Right?" Mercie turns to Dimitri.
"Of that sort, yes. I'm merely introducing her to the Blue Lions as she will... be employed here."
Kira is taken aback by Dimitri's respect of not just shouting out she will be the new professor, but is grateful nonetheless.
"Will she now? That I had a feeling that was the case!" She beams. "Well its a pleasure to meet you. My name is Mercedes, and this is my best friend-"
"I'm Annette!" The girl eagerly takes the lead. "Its nice to meet you!"
"Likewise. And yes, I am the Konpeki Katana. I look forward to working with the both of you."
Mercedes you're such a mom! And why does Annette hafta be so friggin' cute! She's a friggin' cinnamon roll!
"Wait..." Annette's happy aura disspates and is replaced by horror. "I remember you..."
Kira immediately becomes chilled by her change in attitude and fears that Annette may have heard of some of her more... questionable deeds.
She wouldn't have right? Did one of the client's screwed me over and bad mouthed me? Or... did I...?
"You were in the dining hall when I-" Annette begins to panic and frantically blurts, "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry you had to see that! I swear it was an accident! I made sure that I- But I didn't even know that the pan would- Oh... I made a bad first impression did I?
"Hey now, don't be too hard on yourself Annie." Mercedes soothes her and wraps her in a loving hug. "Accidents happen even to the best of us. And the important thing is that no one was hurt."
"Yeah..." Annette buries her face in the older girl's chest. "But the whole place was covered in smoke..."
THAT'S what's eatin' ya? Heh eat. Get 'cuz... never mind...
"Please do not be sorry, miss." Kira assures the mortified girl. "My biggest concern was for your safety and the safety of your colleague. I am pleased that both of you were unharmed."
Her robotic words have a tremendous effect as Annette pulls away from Mercedes and flashes a relieved grin.
"Thank you. And I promise, I won't be such a klutz when it comes to your meal. You'll have the best there is!"
"Aside from being an excellent cook, Annette here is Baron Dominic's niece, and a talented student. She scored the highest marks at the Royal School of Sorcery!"
Dimitri's praise make the eager girl flustered.
"She's cheerful and hardworking, brilliant even!"
"Hehe. I think your praise is too much for poor Annie to handle right now." Mercedes chimes in.
"I supposed so." Dimitri is quick to change the flow of their talk. "You were there, too right Mercedes?"
"Sure was! We were in the same class, actually!" She then inner edge of her hand under her chin to ponder something. "Hmm... I think Lorenz was there as well. One of the Alliance heirs? Though..." She frowns and decides not to continue."
"Its fine. I'm glad that the two of you reunited here at the Officers Academy! Are you two excited?"
"You bet! I'm ready for anything this academy has to throw at me!" Annette gleefully declares.
"I am too. Though I have to admit, I am a little nervous..."
"Oh don't worry about it, Mercie! I'll be with you every step of the way!"
"Hehe. What else are best friends are for, right Annie."
"Of course! Best friends! Always and forever!"
Okay... I dunno if this power of friendship bullcrap is makin' me all fuzzy or grossing me out! Man... I miss Singapore...
Dimitri and Kira soon excuse themselves and departed from classroom. Kira immediately forgets the pack of cats in the courtyard and keeps close to the wall. Thankfully Dimitri does not notice
"Well then, what did you think? As you can see the Blue Lions are a lively bunch. But you will find none who will work harder."
"They are truly impressive, Your Highness." Kira answers genuinely impressed by what she has seen. "You must be very proud."
Dimitri lets out a quick laugh. "Coming from one such as yourself, that is high praise indeed, Professor... ummm..."
"Professor will do just fine." Kira says. "Given that my name is confidential, and my mercenary title is what it is, Professor will suffice."
"Then its decided... Professor. Ah, forgive me, it sounds simple, but I fear it must take some getting used to."
Kira lets out a low melodic chuckle, breaking her role somewhat. "There's no rush, Your Highness."
Dimitri blinks, wondering if his ears deceived him. "I'm sorry. Did you just laugh?"
Kira immediately stiffens. "Umm... did I do something to offend you?"
"No! No! I just... I'm sorry. Given the tales told about you. Its rather amazing that you just relaxed there for a moment. Its... refreshing."
"Oh..." Kira smiles at his words. "Well thank you for that." She clears her throat and resumes her neutral persona. "In any case, I feel it is appropriate for me to report to Her Grace The Archbishop."
Dimitri slightly frowns at her shift in personality but nods. "Of course. I wish you luck. But no matter what you choose, should you ever need any assistance, please do not hesitate to call upon me."
"I will. Thank you, Your Highness."
With a gracious bow, Kira takes her leave and makes her way to the second floor.
All while avoiding those devilish felines.

Audience Chamber
Although a lavish throne was present, and designed to be used during these types of events, the Archbishop of all of Fodlan continues to see these matters through standing tall upon her two feet.
Perhaps it is the most efficient method to command respect and undivided attention. And given her majestic and peaceful presence, it certainly has more than the desired effect as the three professor's standing before her could not take their eyes off of her.
As expected, Rhea's prim and proper advisor, Seteth is at her left flank, stern looking as ever but stays silent nonetheless with his attention mostly focused more and more on the newest professor sandwiched between the two experienced ones.
"Thank you all for attending this gathering." Rhea's voice is quick to dislodge the tense air that has built up from the waiting and anticipation. "As you all are aware, we can no longer entrust the former Professor look after and guide our students here at our esteemed academy." Her disappointed frown turns into a vibrant smile. "Therefore, I am proud to place this great honor upon the young woman before you."
Kira can feel the whole room is just glaring her down.
"I am aware that several of you have reservations about her qualifications here at the Academy. And I assure you, your concerns are not without reason."
Yet you just trailblazed me through the vetting process did'ja!
"However, as it is our responsibility to shape these young minds to safeguard Fodlan's future, I feel the students would benefit immensely from someone blessed with the art and skill of a renown warrior. Regardless, Professor Hanneman, and Professor Manuela, I hope both of you will assist our friend in matters she is unfamiliar with."
"It will be no trouble, Lady Rhea." Hanneman offers his assurances. "Whatever tasks that she may struggle in, she can always count on me."
"There's no harm in being a team player." Manuela coos. "Who knows? We both might be able to help each other out. Does that sound lovely, Professor?"
"Thank you. Both of you, for your offer to assist me. If I should ever come across an obstacle I'm uncertain of, I will be sure to rely on your guidance."
"I'm sorry... Professor?" Seteth sounds puzzled.
"Oh, our mystery girl insisted on being called that. It does have a certain charm to it I might say."
Hanneman scowls but offers more. "Out of respect for our colleague's privacy, we are content with addressing her by the title alone. It'll be no trouble for us, Your Grace."
As Kira glances over at Seteth, she can tell he is the exact opposite of convinced. If anything he's more suspicious of her now.
"I see." His voice is low, brimming of intimidation that would have shaken mere men and woman. People that clearly do not describe a battle-hardened mercenary such as Kira and remains undeterred. "I must publicly note that I am against entrusting someone with your... profession. As well as other matters that show conflicting records of you. However, it is as the Archbishop desires."
Dude. C'mon! Just can my ass and save us both the trouble!
"So be it." Rhea declares. "Now then, Professor, given that you are the newest member of our Academy, you will be given the honor of choosing the House you wish to lead and instruct."
"Manuela and I will take charge of the two remaining houses." Hanneman supplies. "But do take the liberty to know the other students from the other houses. They may be able to help you in matters, and we may need your student's help as well."
Yeah like that's not confusing enough...
"I am curious to see who you'll pick though. I don't mind you stealing my favorite house from me. But... it would be nice to be that lucky."
Lady put more clothes on!
Manuela and Hanneman's words resonate with Kira. It appears whatever house she chooses is the one she will stick with throughout the school year. The sort of decision that is not to be taken lightly.
But after being introduced to three houses, Kira is not burdened by such trivialities. To her, the answer is clear and resolute.
Without hesitation or reserve, Kira declares her house of choice...

And that's a wrap. Sorry for leaving it at the one of the most important part in the whole franchise, but this chapter has been crazy to write!
I also want to apologize for my lack of creative grammar in some areas, I try my best to broaden it, but I want the chapters to flow smoothly that its difficult to keep track of the use of words and the flow itself. I'll likely return to this chapter to edit it, so don't be surprised if there are some minor changes.
Also I hope you guys are liking Kira as a character. I know abridged Byleth is a bit of a dare, but its been interesting to write.
Only question is, which house will she choose? Any takers?
Thank you for reading and feel free to leave a review. Constructive feedback is always helpful.
